At the Ranch – Reader Note:  You may get an “odd response” from this website while I am doing the final round of tuning before we go behind a paywall Feb. 14, of next year.  Our present web tuning is designed to speed up the site, but while the ads are gone, so are a few minor features, like being able to turn on the Dark Theme.  This is so I can track down some unwanted script overhead slowing down the works. The feature may come back – but for now, not happy with performance and we do respect your time available to spend on line, such that focusing on less “dead time” during page loads and the like is our goal.

The reality of an ad supported website (like Urban)  is that when you get ads to pay for overhead, there’s a lot of “digital dirt” attached in terms of script overhead to serve people the “right ads.”  This puts a simple-minded old man (played by me) in the awkward position of having to make continuous judgments of whether to favor revenue (Everything’s a Business Model) or the page loading speed and reduced level of clutter.

Going behind a paywall is our plan – when I turn 76 (in a couple of month) I want to focus purely on the “joy of writing” as opposed to the “work of computing” which I’ve been involved in since 1982.  Paywalls are simple business relationships.  Ads, much less so.  And we’ve come to value confidentiality and simplicity a lot in recent years.

Data Day Today

A week out from the “American PsyOp” (election) we have a few important data hurdles to jump.  The change point for trading could be the Housing report which we’ll post separately when I get the press release email from Case-Shiller/S&P.  Or, at 10 AM today, the Labor JOLTS report will fly out.  This one is the foreshadowing event ahead of the ADP (and GDP) reports tomorrow, the Challenger job cuts report (and UI filings) Thursday. And the whole Festival of Numbers wraps Friday.  Then we get into the window Sunday that various seers and prognosticators have been red-flagging.  So, an interesting time to be “web tuning”.

For starters, first out of the gate is the International Trade report from Census.  Which has been a (politically?) very noisy data series. With lots of reports that trade is good and revised as bad to consider.  It’s also a time to remember that we have December 7th ahead in astrology when there’s fear that China could begin to throttle U.S. exports (and exert influence in a military way in the Pacific) and that will come “too late to change” the (Psy-Op) outcome is voters get it wrong.  Of that much we can almost be sure.

With that, here’s the report card on Imports and Retail Inventories.

“The advance international trade deficit in goods increased to $108.2 billion in September from $94.2 billion in August as exports decreased and imports increased.”

Back at the dime-store MBA school, they never mentioned about using the degree mark to denote billions of dollars.  Hmm…too late for a tuition refund or is a DEI hire doing proofing at Census?  After the numbers Dow futures dropped 150 and the S&P down 10-ish.

This is a small enough (economic nit) that it’s unlikely to influence the campaigns.  Housing – only if it’s a 24 kt train wreck – and that’s unlikely because inflation is good for fixed assets.

About that Psy-Op (Election)

Our retired fellow of the oak leaves who offers ideas to improve understanding of things in general (“warhammer“) has some poignant thoughts on what happens over the next week – and beyond:

“You’ve discussed at great length the certainty of our nation implementing a domestic psychological operations (PsyOps) program on the general population. Like it or not, we are smack dab in the middle of a full fledged domestic PsyOps engagement.

It’s called an election, a highly volatile presidential campaign. How can one party win out over on another?  The winning side deploys the best propaganda, the best PysOps.  PsyOps and politics seem to resonate with basic human nature.  They go hand-in-hand.

PsyOps deploys strong negative emotion to achieve an objective.  Emotion is one of the most powerful tools available to politicians.  The faction holding power wants to have positive emotion generated for their platform, party or cause and negative emotion, specifically fear and anger, against the policies and platforms of their opponent(s).

Why fixate on the negative, one might ask?  Negative emotion, particularly anger, enables a unique psychological superpower in the everyday common (wo)man.  “Anger lowers risk perceptions by increasing perceived control and strength, reduces information seeking and processing, and mobilizes adventurous political action to preserve a threatened worldview.” See:  Negative emotions and political engagement.

In other words, anger is a basic human psychological response to one’s world view being threatened.  The penultimate message?  “If you are with us, us = good.  Them = bad!”

‘Merica and allied nations of the world are witnessing the liberal, progressive powers that be putting on a proverbial ‘full court press’ of negative emotions against Trump and, by association, the GOP.  Mainstream media news factions such as ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC, MSNBC are all-in on Kamala as are Politico, USA Today, Wall Street Journal and lately the former conservative Drudge Report on the web side.  All are thumping Trump at every turn.  Then we have career political hacks from former presidential administrations voicing their opposition to ‘The Don.’  So what gives?

The political hacks barking against Trump, especially those who’ve served in past GOP administrations, know to a person that Trump, should he win the day, will not include them in his expected presidential staff. In turn, they hold great personal animosity to this usurper (Trump had never held political office ‘until’ his election in 2016.  He is a classic political outlier.)  Trump violates their world view.  In turn, Trump is more dangerous than the opposing political party. And ‘Mericans must fear the enemy.  Message?  Fear Trump! Classic PysOps.

It will be interesting to see how history records this election and what eventually flows out of it.  I am reminded of these words by one much wiser than I:

    • Very insightful..Teacher teaching correctly.

      Both my kids were trained in Chinese Martial Arts with Int. Yan Xin Qigong Health Inst. of Martial Arts (Wushu). They were only Caucasians in the class, Chinese Teacher used a “whacky stik” to keep the Students in line. Daughter and her Chinese friend spent a lot time “hiding” in Girls room..silly Gooses. Son was always getting wacky stik instruction – real PITA that one.
      Their Teacher was my Qigong Tai Ji teacher (Part the Wild Horses Mane on both Sides…..Turn, deflect,parry, punch, Apparent close-up , cross hands, Closing form) . Our group even got to perform on stage at MSG at the Concert for Peace, Health, Prosperity in 1997., as opening Act. NRG that night was unlike anything I ever felt or experienced..Ever.

  2. Boring I know but talking about tooth color a while ago, I report that using a tablespoon or so of 50:50 3% hydrogen peroxide and water as a mouthwash several times a day for a week has resulted in a slight whitening of my teeth, which needed it.

    Since I plan to keep doing this, I anticipate more slow whitening. Well maybe less-browning, not whitening yet.

    (And should help eliminate tooth decay, too.)

    • I agree with Warhammer. Most previous elections were based on disagreement and dislike but not hatred and full time demonizing the opposition. Very dangerous. The time between November 5 and January 6 may be explosive.

      This election has serious global implications. As your neighbour to the north, I wonder if there is one question that should be asked when going to the ballot box.

      • I believe that any war is a “no-win” war. Truly defensive wars may be necessary, but they still cost massively. IMHO, wars should not escalate linearly. If someone crosses a red line that’s been announced, it should be utter destruction without further warning. Wars, like all fights, should never have more than one side walk away.

        Never incite violence or try to trigger a response, and NEVER telegraph your intentions!

  7. Did you see this disgusting piece of crap that MSNBC put out about the Trump Rally at MSG. It’s on the front of this Canadian blogger who called it out (34 seconds in). By the way, the rally was full of Jews, and Israel flags, just to point out how evil the reporting of the left was. As a Jew from Canada here, I am horrified by the broadcast.

    • Chris, generally speaking, Democrats will do anything to hold power. However, those currently in power are not our traditional Democrats. They are the Marxist, Leninist, Maoist, Stalinist, Trotskyite fringe. They are far-left of our traditional Dems, far more radical, and far more likely to adopt the most egregious means of forcing their opinion and ideals on all who resist. As people like Alan Dershowitz and Bobby Kennedy have observed: “I didn’t leave the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party left me…”

      John F. Kennedy was a Liberal Democrat in 1961, when he became President. Were he alive and running for High Office today, there is no State in which he could run as a Democrat, and only a few where he could run as a Republican, because on a national level, our politics has shifted so far Left that he would be considered too “Radical Right” to be elected.

      Interestingly, the bulk of the People have not shifted very far left. We accept homosexuality as a sexual identity now, where before it was merely an aberrant social behavior, and we accept abortion as a faux “right” now, rather than the final, fatal choice in a succession of bad choices, but in most arenas in which a vagina is not involved, our societal norms are about where they were before Gloria Steinem became a Playboy Bunny.

      The Democrats are running with the “Hitler narrative” because their policies are so far left of the mainstream that it is not possible for them to run on them. In past Administrations it has been possible for them to cherry-pick “wins” upon which to run (Bill Clinton’s first Administration is the last Administration to have a “balanced budget.” The balanced budget was brought about by Newt Gingrich and a tidal wave of new Republicans who “washed” into office in 1994 on a promise to balance the U.S. budget — and then did it, Clinton claimed responsibility for the budget and successfully ran on “fiscal responsibility” in 1996.)

      The Obama and Biden Administrations have had no “wins” upon which to run. Their records have been between abysmal and un-American. Obama ran twice, successfully, using a campaign strategy of “I’m not the other guy” negativity to cover his lack of positive accomplishments. Biden did the same, and now so is Harris. ‘Thing is, while Mr. Obama is no mental tower, his IQ is above average and his “speaking quotient” from a written word is off the charts. Mr. Biden has an IQ of about 100 and Ms. Harris, an IQ of about 90, and neither has ever been in danger of winning an oratorical contest, so their campaigns both went hard-negative from the get-go.

      No Jew that’s paying attention could possibly vote with a clear conscience, for Harris. A lot of American Jews, though, simply don’t pay attention. You’re still a Rabbi, aren’t you? Have you considered taking a vacation to NY/NJ/PA and having a talk with some of the low-information Jews in this country? Since the Harris Campaign is importing Labour Party agitators from the UK to assist her, it should certainly be okay for you to come to Philly for a few days, to do God’s Work…

  9. Trade deficit – U.S. imports of goods rose 3.8% in September to $282.4 billion, reflecting large shipments of consumer electronics, food and oil. This is a two and half year high. Though it does seem to be all related to retailers trying to get their inventories up before the Longshoreman’s strike. Many analysts believe that this surge is a one-time event – though some are predicting the same rise in the deficit as we get closer to the January strike deadline by the Longshoreman’s union. “It isn’t over. Just postponed for a while.”

    • One look at the deficit and the just how fast the interest is accumulating on the deficit.. from 500 billion a year to almost four trillion a year this year and last year it was two trillion increase..
      next year no matter who is president if it continues at this rate interest should be increasing a trillion every six weeks ..
      then consider how many millions have crossed our borders..if 1/10 of a percent.. and we aren’t doing a thing..
      the absolute best..is a depression so bad that the Weimar will look as a trip to the park..

    The official White House schedule noted that President Biden journeyed to New Castle, De. yesterday and cast his ballot for next week’s election. Isn’t that typically an election day happening for a President?

    The schedule also linked to a transcript and video of the President addressing a reporters’ scrum after he exited the polling station. Just a note of observation that the interviewee twice pronounced out the “ch” of the word ‘character’ as like it would be in ‘change’ rather than ‘kite’.
