There’s a reason why the experienced traders around here bailed out last week (early) or at the week’s lows (Friday). State variance extremes were close-by. Have a look at the extreme right side of this chart. You will see the early futures today were painting a possible bounce.
Here’s what the tape is whispering today…

There are a number of candidates for “what’s behind the curtain.” But, we try to keep them all in mind. Because real drivers arrive from the constellation Loser. Winners are born under the sign Mindful.
#1. There is no stability in news. Yes, we lost an E-3 electronics plane on the ground in the Middle East. Photos show heavily damaged US radar jet at Saudi base. The Houthis became active this weekend, too. But, no nukes going off, and now Trump’s even saying he doesn’t have a problem with Cuba getting a load of Russian oil product. Relief rally is on the table.
#2. Housing tomorrow. If this is a “buy the rumor” Monday, then it’s possible that a “sell the news” could be setting up for the S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller housing report tomorrow. Although we are always a bit cautious of it. The numbers are solid, but a couple of months old. To be counted has to close. Getting to closing from earnest money can be a month. Then it can take a while to be tabulated. So, what’s that, a couple of months? Depending too much on the rear view when driving through an inflation minefield can be dangerous.
#3. There is the Holiday Effect. If markets are going to bounce, in advance of a holiday is a fine time. Stock trading closes for “Good Friday” so an ultra-lite day of work for us, too.
Which reminds me: The stock market may look like one of the more godless inventions of modern man — all greed, leverage, panic, and price discovery at gunpoint — but its Good Friday closure is really a legacy artifact from the New York Stock Exchange’s old cultural setting, when American financial life still carried a heavier Christian civic imprint.
The NYSE and Nasdaq still list Good Friday as a market holiday today, even though it is not a federal holiday, which is why the whole thing can look contradictory on the surface. But it’s less theology than tradition: markets are secular money-machines run inside a civilization that inherited religious customs, and every now and then the wiring still shows through.
In this case, it’s a short in the wiring. (Gimme a Monday rim shot…)
Bitcoin was $67.866 when we looked, Just over half of its all-time high. Gold and silver were up a tad. And Europe? UK is up over 1 percent while France and Germany less than half that.
Dust Bowl Delayed?
My late friend Robin Landry used to school me, “What flips a recession into a Depression is a drought.”
So, going over the short-term lookaheads from the NOAA Climate Prediction Center, the road to Dust Bowl 2.0 seems to be planning a pee stop.

What we think will happen in this spring will be a month – maybe two – of moisture coming back toward normal and (except for the wicked southwest) will see some moderating temps ahead. Something reader Stephen2 was whining about in our Comments section over the weekend. Relief coming is the odds change we’re sensing.

One of the paid AI stacks here mentioned over coffee that today is Celine Dion’s birthday.
I mentioned back that “No self-directed grownup cares – we have other things to worry about. Though it somehow feels perfectly on-brand for modern civilization. Around the Ranch: Sniff Planting
A couple of months back, my BWP (big winter project) was building an improved deck off the 180-wine room: ShopTalk Sunday: More Decking Around.
This weekend, we were trying to figure out what was missing. Elaine snapped her fingers “We need plants – plants that have a vibe and smell good!”
Our long-suffering gardenia that had provided great olfactory realism finally bit the dust this winter, so we went shopping. OK, clicking.
This week, five cold-tolerant gardenias will land. Shortly thereafter, two lilac bushes will arrive.
And we may get into home grape-stomping, one of these years. Deacon Dan next door recently gave us a grape plant. Since anything worth doing is worth totally overdoing, I picked up four more Southern Grapes. They will go in around the patio pavers. I’ve always wanted to weld up a real grape trellis out of rebar, so here comes the excuse…
Speaking of Welding: One of Elaine’s boys will be starting welding school today. Work-related course for a month.
And I dunno why, but I shorted out mentioning the Big Spring Sale at Amazon. Where (not like I need another welder, but…) check this out. $40 bucks for a little 200 amp home buzz-box. Hell yeah.
Tossed Yard, is it? No, but the main project today will be applying a good spritz of 20 percent vinegar to all parts of the yard where we don’t want things growing. Clip and save this:
Best simple formula (for 1 gallon):
Mix 1 gallon of white vinegar (5% acidity; use 20-30% horticultural vinegar for tougher weeds), 1 cup table salt or Epsom salt (optional but boosts results), and 1-2 tablespoons dish soap (Dawn works great).
Stir or shake well until the salt dissolves, then pour into a garden sprayer.
The vinegar’s acetic acid burns and dries out plant leaves, the salt dehydrates roots, and the soap helps the mix stick to weeds.
Spray on a sunny, dry day, thoroughly wetting the foliage—results often show in hours to a day for young annual weeds. It’s non-selective, so avoid desirable plants, and note it may not kill deep-rooted perennials as reliably as glyphosate. Reapply as needed.
Another book: This one – like many of my books, will be serialized on Peoplenomics in coming weeks. This week, we’ll ponder odds of a Depression in China – very much in our economic vein. Looking ahead, my Four Track Human model is paying off big conceptual dividends. Including a new look at the Tesla and Edison “spirit phone research.” (Yes, we will try to build one…DSP is involved.)
On that. have a great Monday, enjoy a short rally this week but keep the goggles handy for later in the month. Nostradamus in G.A. Stewart’s work, may be close on the summer timing. SPF 10,000 anyone?

Might stop off at Lowes in a bit for just in case ya know.
Wow – we have been talking about this for nigh on to two freaking years and the pleebs are just being awakened. ‘mazing – thanks
Ure site has been covering agricultural insufficiency SOL issues as long as I have been a reader. You are credit to chow hounds everywhere.
I wouldn’t expect a SHTF moment until late Fall or early Winter, unless a major grid down and fuel distribution implosion hits. In the EMP scenario, without storage food in the pantry, you are screwed from day one.
Otherwise, there will be food until a crop failure, and that won’t impact store shelves before October or so. Prices will start skyrocketing when grim crop estimates start getting leaked.
Storage food outfits look OK:
Mountain House- no sales, but a new membership discount deal.
Walton Mills (Rainy Day): Plenty of stock, decent sale on 2024 stuff. In #10 storage cans year old is great.
Emergency Essentials (For LOOB) Spring sale on.
Nothing to indicate a Panic at this time. But just because you aren’t paranoid it doesn’t mean that you aren’t completely screwed.
Might be a good time to stock up on pails, liners, and oxygen absorbers for dry canning. Cheapest way to stock up fast is 25 or 50 lb bags of dried staples and dry can it yourself in big pails. Fuel to cook, and time is an issue with dried stuff. Pressure cookers can reduce time, and salvage older stock. Freeze dried (FD) prepares quick with just a little boiling water. Just have several big bottles of Psyllium husk caps to keep things moving with the FD.
Seed for 2027 may become the big hidden issue.
I now return you to your regular programming.
I need to retort can a bunch of hamburger..gotta clear the freezer before the cow gets to the meat locker…so far it’s a little dry..but the farmers are getting the fields ready early just in case..

Having a fair knowledge of comparative religion and mythology, I decided to dig deeper into the source writings of many cultural beliefs. I have come to the conclusion that there are forces at work in the world today that are much older than human civiliza-
tion and perhaps even impossible for us mere mortals to understand. Simply put, humans have created and kept a very long and well-documented history concerning the political
ambitions and intrigues of very wrathful, vengeance seeking gods. At one time or another humans have defied them and suffered the consequences, and as many varied prophecies
and myths foretell, these self-styled deities still have some unfinished business with man-kind.
”As above, so below” is the ancient metaphysical dictum. It might be that the great human struggle is but a mirror of larger forces at work in the universe. Yes, this subject is
conspiracy theory run amok, and armies of comedians and talking heads have poked funat it on television, but you won’t be laughing when you and your family are starving to
death. Does it sound far fetched? I assure you, it is as real as the nightly news.
funny you should say that…I had a dream ( or nightmare ) where Iran added radioactive in the shape of powder on the drones..each one shot down would replicate what our nuclear tipped missiles do .by explosion into a radio active dirty fog. .

Our (much loved) next door neighbors put in a vine several years ago. Be aware, grapes are a bird fav. so … then they crap (everywhere) in lovely shades of purple. MUCH Warm(er) here with day high in the low 70s. Beginning tomorrow we have 5 of 10 days where rain is in the forecast. Think I’ll bring down the tractor for a 2nd spring mowing. Got Rain? Trade ya … Egor
Ure local Deer population will know PREZACTLY when the Grapes are at peak Maturity, as that will be exact time they attack em – only for Youse two to wakeup and find all Ure vines denuded of all ripe Grapes.
Prezactly the wrong problem – when I really want my partner denuded and my grapes full of flavor..
I have about 400 linear feet of Concord vines. Every spring they advertise a heavy crop. The birds start in on them when they’re about the size of wild blueberries and I rarely see a mature grape. I’m going to net the grapes and figs this year, to see if I can keep a few ’till harvest time.
BTW, I’ve had Chicago Figs for several years now. -22°F hasn’t killed them and they produce every year. Just sayin’…
A desirable plant is called gravel! Good info on the vinegar mix.
The little welder seems to be one of a family built by different vendors all copying the same schematics and enclosures. God bless the land of IP piracy! I wouldn’t call them buzz boxes though – they’re all DC, though there was nothing in the Amazon page to say that. For the price, they’re worth it for backups, or even to keep in different shops for small stuff or less than critical welding. Buying replacement IGBT’s probably costs more than just getting another welder.
I bought the cheapest one like it for fun a few years ago and it works as advertised, but it cost more than twice it’s current price. It’s good to carry around to where there’s only 110 volt power, or even to run off a 2500 watt inverter when out in the field.
doesn’t list an amp draw, but I am guessing a 115v 20amp outlet will work,
I will get one for small repairs, if I need a real welder, I will go see my friend with the weld shop business,,, worked too many “certified” tube/pipe/plate welders , I knew from power plant constrution to powerplant regular employees,,, I am a piss poor welder, cant see the puddle to save my butt, but can manage a usable weld for my needs
$50 include the suggested goggles , cheap, one successful repair and it pays for itself, as I have an upgrade to my log splitter I want welded
I’ve run one from a 15 amp outlet, but it will trip the breaker if you crank up the amps. 20 amp is better and totally adequate for what the welder is good for. Welding with one of these is much easier than the old DC welders or even a tombstone(Lincoln buzz box). The unit George mentioned has “hot start”, which helps. Practice on scraps, and spring for an active glass helmet which is near clear, but instantly changes to a safe welding darkness when an arc is struck. With my eyes, that kind of flashglass is almost essential to make the job fun and accurate. They’re cheap on Amazon or at Harbor Freight. I use 6011, 7014, and 7018 rods almost all the time – 1/8″ diameter mostly. Personally, I don’t like the 6013 for anything, but some people do. There’s a learning curve to each of the rods, and you can find a lot of information online – if you have time after reading all these columns.
I will get some 3/32, 7018,, and vacuum seal any left over rod, as I don’t have as rod oven ,, 6010 which the pipe welders used for a root pass, doesn’t require a heated storage like the xx18 rods do,,, thanks
well, we always stored the 7018,8018 & 9018 in rod ovens at the power plant
TOBD, you might try a 7014 rod. It doesn’t need a rod oven and is almost a drag rod at 70kpsi. Some people call them a beginner rod, but they just work. 7018’s require a bit of practice to get right and a 6010 is a great pipe rod for experts, but the 6011 is a farmer’s all purpose rod. It’s deep penetrating, and it can be bought anywhere cheaply. For anything structural, I use the 6011 for a root pass and follow up with 7018. For anything less, it’s 6011, 7014, or whatever’s closest. The 7014 is a high build rod, FWIW. I don’t use a rod oven for anything, though I probably should. Then again, it’s dry here most of the time.
Organic Neem Cake or Neem meal, a great fertilizer to stock up on, boosts pest resistance of plants and improves soil.
I have butternut squash, zucchini, sage, basil, and good king Henry sprouts growing, two tomato plants in the ground that my wife bought at the grocery store.
This is what we use to keep the Iguanas off the plants in Belize , NEEM Oil mixed with 1 chopped up Habanero pepper, in sprayer bottle . Actually that mix is just a deterrent, PCP airgun in .25 cal is what keeps em off the plants permanent like.
I want acorn squash …yummy…
we are only putting two zucchini plants in..we got tons of zucchini from four plants .one year I got a squash called 8 ball…that was as good as acorn.. so far the garlic hasn’t started to grow I hd planted something like 400 garlic last fall..onions and garlic .dill and parsley the green onion fridge container I made is working better than I ever thought. I got bigger containers for the dill and parsley..
President Trump said that a deal with Iran was “probably” close, but warned the US would obliterate the regime’s power plants, oil wells, and its main export hub if negotiations fell through.

So, Russian oil tanker Anatoly Kolodkin (ru: “descendant of a block of wood”) has arrived in Cuba with a little moral support along the way from an alleged onboard private military company contingent and a Russian Navy corvette. According to the SCF website (SovComFlot), its vessel’s namesake was a late accomplished doctor of legal sciences who served with UN tribunals and the ICC in The Hague.
SCF is Russia’s largest shipping company and is headquartered in St. Petersburg. The biggest company shareholder is the Government of Russia with about 82% of the total. SCF’s ceo is apparently a longtime associate of President Putin. His son married the youngest daughter of, as of 2022, Russia’s 6th and the world’s 205th wealthiest person lately of Switzerland holding Russian, Finnish, and Armenian citizenship.
Docking of the Anatoly Kolodkin in Cuba might well be the biggest response to diplomatic detente signals since Uncle Jeb took the Clampett family to London in 1967. Break out a bottle of the good stuff!

The stock markets opened to the upside this morning – weak, but climbed slowly. They have since changed course and the Russell, NASADAQ and S&P500 have turned negative.
Trump just can’t keep his mouth shut.., as he once again threatens to bomb Iran out of existence. Specifically listing targets., even their desalinization plants. [ Which would severely cripple the population. Iran is very low on fresh water supplies.]

hmm drought…does that mean I should make more wine??
Just a personal observation.., leading to a warning. If Trump orders U.S. troops into Iran it will change the world as we know it. The blow-back., the domino-effect from this action will be felt for years to come.
It is a horrendous and totally unnecessary military action that will cost us hundreds of troops. Many Arab nations, and terrorist proxy militia’s will go ballistic – China and Russia will also respond [ exactly how is conjecture at this point., but they will not let it slide.] Israel will be hit especially hard – forcing even more military actions.
I do not know just how you will react., or ‘if’ you even will.., nor how you will prepare for this unmitigated disaster., but if you hear that troops are landing in Iran – it could very well be the first step in a world wide recession – multiple brush-wars – supply chains breaking and a slow churning financial and economic collapse, of many countries – leading into a world wide depression. .., and more than likely more, much bigger wars.
It may sound like I am over-reacting a wee bit.., but I firmly believe that if troops deploy onto Iranian soil – we [and the world] are going to pay a very heavy price., and the rest of this entire year will be unlike any we have seen before.
“Stay Frosty !”
I thought I recognized that by-line. I think your casualty estimate is low. At this point, I’m not sure we have an exit option that doesn’t end in mass casualties somewhere. We are talking about suicide nation, still engaged in mortal combat to right wrongs by their own brothers from the middle ages. Perpetual hereditary soreheads, and now we have given them something to ruminate on for the next 1200 years.
I certainly don’t think you are overreacting. Tomorrow morning, I catch a flight in Cebu to the West Coast. The mission is to acquire some cash and transfer it to our bank here so we can finalize the purchase of 3 hectares of farmland. My understanding is that it was once part of a Sugar Cane plantation but has been getting fertilized by cows and goats for quite a few years now. 3 hectares might not sound like much but we have a 12 month growing season.
After I get the funds I’m here for, I plan to do some work around the house and at start to get it ready for sale. I wish I could get everything done this Spring like I had planned, but everything seems to have worked against me this year. First those crazy prices had bullion dealers not buying of even closing their shops and now the war.
Solar powered off grid house with 40 acres. A real estate agent told me it should be worth what I want, but mortgages aren’t given for off grid homes, so I’ll need to find someone with cash in hand. Maybe next year if the world is still functioning.
My flight back is on the 17th but my wife told me that if starts hitting the fan to pay whatever it takes to catch the earliest flight I can get out of Spokane and come home.
Okanogan Offgrid : glad you sourced a sale point for PMs. My metals dealer _did_ have issues with some sorts of intake, not wanting anything with supposed (*) numismatic (extra) value, only bullion. The problem was upstream, not at street level. Apparently refiners stepped back from trade. I’m still trying to learn about that. Maybe dishoarding swamped them?
(*) it’s always been my thought that when the chips are down (pun intended) a van Gogh is just a wall hanging. IOW, don’t pay extra for rarity when that premium may dissolve during stress test. Bullion is best.

speaking of 3s. i have read this three times in the last week, after asking about Israel and the Iran war.
i asked again last night because Israel is pushing for US boots on the ground but will not send their own troops into Iran.
and i keep getting this feeling that the entire Iran war is a set up to take out the US. its just a hunch. I just have this strange feeling that the entire reason The US is being drawn into this war is to cripple the US economy and destroy the US.
i know without a doubt that Trumps purpose is to dominate China by controling its oil supply.
but i cant help this nagging feeling that the whole purpose of Israels management team is using this war to cripple the US in the process.
when i originally asked, because i dont know everything, i keep getting back, “What does the hand writing on the wall say”
so i been watching to see what graffiti says. I said im sorry, Im not understanding what you are telling me. LORD i know you are not the author of confusion. Grant me Clarity.
and then I opened my Bible randomly not once but 3 times, in the last few weeks and read,
MENE MENE TEKEL UPHAR-SIN
i set my bible on its spine and let it open to whatever it opens to. i opened it this morning after i heard Israel is calling for US boots on the ground but wont send its own troups.
for the 3rd time it opened to the Book of Danniel.
and that is the Hand Writing on the Wall.
i am not sure if it is just for Israel. or is for The entire World. but that is the Hand Writing on the Wall.
and you can look up for yourself Daniels interpretation.
I Win with God within.
You’re not the person with that feeling. Pax Judaica at the expense of Pax America.
China is exploiting the moment by extending fuel offers to Southeast Asian states while deepening offshore drilling ties with the Philippines. It recalls the Soviet playbook of binding partners not with iron chains, but with favors that proved just as constraining.
Republicans are finding ways to pay for the plane:
“Republicans are exploring cuts in federal health spending to help fund a budget bill estimated at $200 billion for the Iran war and immigration enforcement. These potential reductions could provoke significant controversy and election-year backlash.”
April Fools Day down here tomorrow. The ‘government’ is dropping the national fuel tax .29aud because they are afraid of the outrage t having only maintained 25mm bbls in a safety storage that was supposed to be 90mm bbls. Some green ideas took over and said no need all that and now lookee.
Driving today about 90k and back for eyes and a scooter tire fix, none of which is available in tiny town. Great road, should be light traffic, beautiful farmland. Low speed. Tomorrow we can fill up and then go nowhere for awhile.
Only peace in mind.

Couple of days late … but got Cataract Surgery end of last year. God rid of my lifetime nearsightedness in the process but elected to NOT get the “Multi Vision lenses installed, never got multi vision contacts to work properly even after many tries over several years so was leery of the technology, so do have to wear reading glasses.
Highly recommend Cataract Surgery if your eyes are bad and they help with those type of problems … but be sure to use a surgeon who does at least a couple of HUNDRED of them a year.
For Medicare the basic Cataract Surgery is supposed to be free, multi vision lenses add about $4500 to the cost, but I did have some out of pockets (surgery center co-pay billings, eye drops etc) so it ended up costing me personally about $650. Since I saw the original billings without Medicare or Health Insurance the total bills would have been a LOT more (about $15,000 for the surgeon, about $23,000 for the surgery center, about $3000 for the lenses)
I’m thinking of adding to my spare gasoline storage. I wonder how well Sta-Bil and Pri-G work to extend the life of whatever they call “gas” these days. AvGas may last forever, but cats in cars don’t like lead at all. Some Valero stations in the greater ABQ area are carrying non-ethanol gas that might be better for longer term storage, but it’s pricey. Diesel is easy to store – gas, not so much.
You’d begin with a leg up shopping the athanol-free blue handled pumps at the murphy6 stations in front of wally world – of’s like ray and me…well, we know…

Then use Pri-G.
They say they can preserve 10% gasohol, but even if they can, you end up with pump-crap. They used to specify “at least” 14 years for gasoline and 20 years for diesel, with no degradation. I don’t know if they still use concrete figures (because we are a litigious society) but I’d suspect PRI is at least as good as it was, 20 years ago, and if they’ve changed their formulas, they’ve done so for the better.
Wal-Mart’s “Murphy” brand is no guarantee. There are five Murphy stations in New Mexico which sell ethanol-free gasoline. Murphy stations in Southern States seem to have a better shot than those in Northern States. Tennessee has 14 Murphy stations that sell real gas, Kentucky has 9; Illinois has 4, Indiana has 3, Ohio has 1, and Pennsylvania and West Virginia have none. George is spoiled, because Texas has 143 Murphy stations that carry ethanol-free gas…
“Sheets” gas stations have “Ethanol Free” at every station I have visited. Unfortunately they are out of PA and only exist in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, North Carolina, and Michigan.
One can also get “Ethanol Free” gas at some Marinas on large bodies of water. Until Sheets came to town I used to pick up my Ethanol Free gas for my small engines at a Great Lakes Marina to bring home … but be sure to check the actual pump and also ask since some gas sold even at large Marina Gas Stations is NOT “Ethanol Free” even if it is marked as such.

I have no experience with Checkout51. You’d have to “triangulate” for real-gas prices. Where I live, prices run from 80¢ to $3+ over the price of generic 87-octane gasohol. I generally survey the six stations within 30 miles of me that sell real gas, whenever I’m near one, to see where their markup is, over pump gas. The station managers are lazy, and pretty much keep the same markup, in cents, over pump regular, or keep their price equal to pump premium. I run price, discount or cash-back, and driving distance before I buy, and I purchase 30 gallons (six “Jerry cans”) at a time…
If you are going somewhere brutal cold, take plenty of warm clothes, some raingear, and maybe a sleeping bag. Wiggys has stuff on sale, and will ship overnight for a price.
You can’t carry tools on the plane. Not sure you want to check them international. I would suggest that when you get to home port, that you at least lay hands on a good full size multi-tool, and a good head lamp, preferably div 2.
And I understand your comment about being where one is a supposed to be, doing what one is supposed to do. But it’s tough to score freebies in the middle of the ocean.
