Small Data (and the Calendar!) Matter

Three smallish data points today kick off our Reality Review.  These are not the most gossiped thing on social, which focuses on anything Orange, and stories like Dalai Lama, 87, apologises after kissing young boy on the lips and asking child to ‘suck’ his tongue.

Thanks, pass.  Well, sort of…

Smaller stories – the ones that get glossed over by the water cooler crowd, that’s where we see “signs and portents” of future.  Here are this morning’s “small news picks” to consider.  Because we think they could have an oversized impact on Future.

If you’re a True Believer in Crypto, none of this morning’s discussion will matter since Bitcoin tops $30,000 for first time since June 2022.  Still less than half its all-time high.  We chalk it up as “hot air still rises” so for now we will still just watch.

China’s Inflation Cools

While much of the mainstream media is focused on the odds of a direct fight with China over their plan to “reunite” Taiwan with the Mainland, economics are critical to watch. But we have to do so with our brains activated.

Take for example the story China Inflation Slows. It’s a Sign of Economic Weakness. | Barron’s. There’s almost a sense of braggadocio to the story. Along the lines of “China is weakening – good for US.”  Not bespoke, but the vibe is there for sure.

A more thoughtful reading of events would suggest several things.

  • With a slowing economy, China needs an “external Devil” to get motivated.  We can see two “biggies” in Taiwan and Ukraine.
  • Militarism would accompany this, which is seen in stories like U.S., Chinese Aircraft Carriers Operating Near Taiwan, Chinese Carrier Shandong Launched 80 Fighter Missions in Weekend Drills – USNI News.
  • The Western Devils also comes through as an organizing propaganda principle in stories about Chinese war plans on their evening news.
  • Never to be outdone: America’s show of strength: US and Philippines launch biggest ever joint exercise in South China Sea. Got to keep up appearances for the Dollar’s sake.
  • Economic Collapse (and we’re talking globally here) begins at the fringe and then works its way toward the core.  And since the U.S. Market’s peaked (along with crypto prices) on November 8, 2021, we can’t hold ourselves up as the Global Economic Leaders.  Without what we’re forced to call “creative accounting” (green eyeshade crookery) we’d have been bust as a nation a year ago.  We’re just making up money and hoping to do so faster than China.  However, because we rely on them to buy our over print of bonds, we have to be somewhat circumspect.
  • China could “dump dollars worldwide” and when that happens, Emperor Joe will be revealed as having no clothes. The government is “coloring outside financial lines” because if we don’t, China will dump US dollars anyway.  Just later.

Chinese Industrial Production and their domestic inflation rate may seem insignificant when compared to the latest mass shooting and the resulting gun-grab frenzy being whipped up in America.  We think at a very deep, structural level, it all matters greatly.

Global deflations (and hyperinflationary) collapse was seen years back in Venezuela and has been circling in ever since. Europe will likely crater before us. But there’s Big Money in War and paradoxically, Ukraine munitions movement may bolster the EuroMob a while longer.  While we face a CPI report tomorrow morning that may reveal the slowing of inflation at home.  Even if experientially moderate (or low) inflation in tomorrow’s report would be a statistics joke.  But we’ll see.

We like the Triple A fuel price report (here) because it outs any extreme lies on energy prices.  As of this morning, national gas price is $3.608.  A month ago, it was $3.474.  Which looks like 3.8 percent higher energy costs for the month.  And year-ago gas was $4.114, so deflation from a year ago, and the recent inflationary spike has been real.

Of course, gas prices are just an indicator.  Lots of noise in the data.  Seasonality, holidays and all that.  But it tees up our next “small numbers that matter” discussion point.

NFIB Worries

Press release just out today hints that Optimism is still on holiday.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 11, 2023) – NFIB’s Small Business Optimism Index decreased 0.8 points in March to 90.1, marking the 15th consecutive month below the 49-year average of 98. Twenty-four percent of owners reported inflation as their single most important business problem, down four points from last month. Small business owners expecting better business conditions over the next six months remain at a net negative 47%.

“Small business owners are cynical about future economic conditions,” said NFIB Chief Economist Bill Dunkelberg. “Hiring plans fell to their lowest level since May 2020, but strong consumer spending has kept Main Street alive and supported strong labor demand.”

Dunkelberg’s point about spending is a two-edged sword.  People will – with rising prices widely discussed – get up off their wallets and spend like mad.  But, where you need to derive future calculus a bit, is figuring how quickly spending will fall again if (or when) prices retreat.  I think most people have recently had 5-percent inflation baked into their thinking – and more for big ticket items like autos and homes.

However, we saw in last month’s housing price report what might be the beginning of a rollover to the downside in Housing prices.  Which has combined to catch the mortgage industry flatfooted.  Why US mortgage lenders lost money on home loans for the first time on record (nypost.com).

And another “little noticed but important, we think” came out over the weekend: FHA approved 40-year mortgage for certain homebuyers in May.

The bad part here – if it hasn’t become visible yet – is that the trend we spotted long ago (“Rent Your Life”) continues to move along. Already, homes are basically a lifetime payment you can’t escape.  Because even IF you manage to pay off your home, the taxes (government’s your not-so-silent partner) NEVER go away.  Stiff local government it’s payoff money and see who really owns your home.

All part of the Big Con Job.  But it is what it is so we move along.

Agriculture Matters

In my early broadcasting days (circa 1969) one of the worst jobs in radio was having to prepare the morning farm report when doing the overnight DJ gig.  Naturally, I made fun of it (sound effects and the like) until one morning an old Snohomish County dairyman called and took me to task.  “You have fun.  But Farms really Matter” he explained.  Ever since then, I’ve kept a “weather eye” on U.S.D.A. outlook press releases.

This is the kind of real actual news the mainstream can’t handle.  It’s not controversial and who wants to monetize a crop report (except in that Eddie Murphy movie, right?).  But here’s a two-week-old “planner” of what to expect.

WASHINGTON, Mar. 31, 2023 Producers surveyed across the United States intend to plant 92.0 million acres of corn in 2023, up 4% from last year, according to the Prospective Plantings report released 3/31 by USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).

Planted acreage intentions for corn are up or unchanged in 40 of the 48 estimating states. The largest increase is expected in North Dakota, where producers intend to plant 800,000 more acres than in 2022. If realized, the planted area of corn in Arizona and Idaho will be the largest on record.

Soybean growers intend to plant 87.5 million acres in 2023, up slightly from last year. Acreage increases from last year of 100,000 or more are expected in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Record high acreage is expected in Illinois, Nebraska, New York, Ohio, and Wisconsin.

The Prospective Plantings report provides the first official, survey-based estimates of U.S. farmers’ 2023 planting intentions. NASS’s acreage estimates are based on surveys conducted during the first two weeks of March from a sample of nearly 73,000 farm operators across the nation. Other key findings in the report are:

  • All wheat planted area for 2023 is estimated at 49.9 million acres, up 9% from 2022.
  • Winter wheat planted area, at 37.5 million acres, is up 2% from the previous estimate and up 13% from last year.
  • Area planted to other spring wheat for 2023 is expected to total 10.6 million acres, down 2% from 2022.
  • Durum wheat is expected to total 1.78 million acres for 2023, up 9% from last year.
  • All cotton planted area for 2023 is expected to total 11.3 million acres, 18% below last year.

See the strategic moves implied?  Take the last one: 18 percent drop in cotton planted.  Tells me that buying underwear, shirts, work pants and such right now might be cheaper than waiting a year when supplies could be lower. Meaning higher prices.

Take a look at some of the additional stats:

  • Corn stocks totaled 7.40 billion bushels, down 5% from the same time last year. On-farm corn stocks were up 1% from a year ago, while off-farm stocks were down 10%.
  • Soybeans stored totaled 1.69 billion bushels, down 13% from March 1, 2022. On-farm soybean stocks were down slightly from a year ago, while off-farm stocks were down 21%.
  • All wheat stored totaled 946 million bushels, down 8% from a year ago. On-farm all wheat stocks went up 30% from last year, while off-farm stocks went down 16%.
  • Durum wheat stored totaled 35.8 million bushels, up 18% from March 1, 2022. On-farm Durum stocks were up 36% from a year ago, while off-farm stocks of Durum wheat were up 6%.

Now, go pencil out potential impacts on your life.  No famine in sight yet, but bad weather (drought or floods) or a hardy wheat rust could literally kill the world.

Markets Eye CPI Wed.

Sorry for the long lead-in, but seemingly small news items can ripple large.  For now, the happy-talk machine is on and calling for a modest rally at the open.

Our outlook?  Well, Europe is up between 0.26 percent (England) and 0.86 percent (France) with Germany (+0.51 percent) leading us to set our sights on a 100-150 Dow point upside today.  Which begins to sketch out a “buy the rumor, sell the news” going into CPI figures tomorrow.  We made our slightly over 1.5 percent for the week from that wild-eyed short over the long weekend.  Out and into watching mode now.    (1.5 percent a week compounds to more than 200 percent per year, so don’t throw rocks at small gains.  Consistency wins, buddy. We’re still improving our game.)

ATR: A Good Read

Got a few minutes of reading in on David Goggin’s book “Never Finished: Unshackle Your Mind and Win the War Within” ($10 for Kindle).

I’m not usually a fan of motivational genre books.  An Earl Nightingale CD while working in the shop, sometimes, sure.

But Goggin’s latest is a worthy follow-on to his first book “Can’t Hurt Me.”

This one focuses more on the “war between the voices” in people’s heads.  The dominant one (for most pfolks) is the all-accepting, loving, forgiving self.  But Goggins gets into the Other Voice.  The hard-ass, the one that calls you out on personal failure and holds you to account for personal weakness of character.

If you’re not aware of Goggins work, here’s a warning against becoming too “civilized.”

The book isn’t a hard read.  But putting it into practice on a daily basis?  Well, yeah…that’s the hard part.

Go grind.

Write when you get rich,

Hmmm…. sounds like get her done brandon has a convert to the democrat party…
Did he sniff his hair LOL LOL

    • Pretty sure the Dalai Lama and brandon have absolutely nothing in common, certainly not in this lifetime. As for “free Tibet”, China seems to have been an amazingly generous and encouraging landlord.

Always try to understand the box before looking outside the box for answers to questions that do not exist on this plane.

      • lol lol..
that was my feeble attempt at humor.. since everything we were taught as wrong is now alright and even admirable traits to show lol lol the drmoralcrat way..like they teach preschoolers today there’s a girl inside your preschool body if your just waiting to get out .

WHAT DOES CHINA’S AND TIBET’S RELATIONSHIP HAVE TO DO WITH THE SUBJECT AT HAND,,, THE PEDOS?
the Dalia Lama lives in India, he fled Tibet, with the China take over

Only pedos protect pedos, often pedos are beat by their own family members,,, unless it is a Satanic pedo family that raises their own to be pedos,,,”these people are sick”,

Thank you for pointing out the interesting image. I have some additional thoughts beyond those of the current day tweet author who correctly notes the child is not Mr Joe Biden’s son. Imho, the original image was taken on January 20, 2013 as then VP Biden surrounded by family was being sworn in for the second Obama term near his One Observatory Circle abode. The child in question receiving the attention appears to be Mr. Biden’s grandson, R. Hunter Biden.

As far as I can make out, the image was published on 1/20/13 by at least two American media platforms. Both reports have been removed. One was a subsidiary of a Mexican conglomerate whose content was coincidentally deleted around when it was bought by an American entity subsidiary to a Boston-headquartered multi-billion dollar private investment company.

        • Jester, thanks for the point needing correction.
Still a ‘strange’ way to hold and kiss one’s own grandson.
          Not how I was raised

  3. Everyone matters when matter is distilled to a catch phrase.

    “Farms really Matter” (1969).

    40 years later.

“In a submission to Congress, General Motors said that without government support “the company will default in the near term, very likely precipitating a total collapse of the domestic industry and its extensive supply chain, with a ripple effect that will have severe, long-term consequences to the U.S. economy.””

Distilled ‘General Motors really matters’, ‘Black Lives…’, “Taiwan”, “SVB really, really mattered”.

The thing that matters is which company will be the modern Haliburton nicking tax payers for gourmet meals? We need to position now.

    • you did notice the faild bank executives still got their bonuses..
what’s hilarious is..I just was talking to a gent that runs a salvage center.. they buy returned and damaged goods then resell them ..they pay a buck a pound per semi..
anyway we got in the conversation about a popular financial program.. I said did you ever notice it forgot how to add and subtract … his eyes lit up yes he can never get a right number and has to adjust his total by 30 dollars a week.. ( it was a dollar when I quit using it) think about that .. the company has almost a billion users..all the control for your accounts is in asia.Asia.. if the program is just stupid ok that’s cool..fix it.. but if it’s a sneaky way of being deceitful.. and the money is going int an account..that’s almost 30 billion.. a week.. like one shipping company all the profits goes directly to the ccp..
      the odds are that isn’t what’s happening..but what if…
I quit using it when it quit adding and subtracting and all banking control was being kept on their servers in their country..I have a difficult time with budgets now without adding to someone else..

      • There’s a city over here that matters, Highland Park MI.

Basically the city hasn’t paid their water bills to the tune of 10’s of millions.

The citizens get billed for water by the city, the citizens pay the bills to the city then the water money disappears.

The same thing happened in 2012, 2016…

The city wants an overall bailout.

    • Looks as though this has dropped to the curb. I remember this from a couple of years ago.., went and checked out their Facebook page.., the last post was five years ago., and though it may be a Dutch design, the contacts are now all South Korean.
Looks like a good idea though.

    George Bernard Shaw”
“Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.
    Buddha”

Ok.. just a couple of quotes from the past.. I am pretty positive that in this group that meets daily here on Urbansurvival.. that if you took into consideration the business model.. I would be the biggest failure.. neutered of any chance as a success in the business model when young.. by an employer and health cirucumstances beyond my control..
BUT.. am I a failure.. IT depends on your perspective..

“You must take personal responsibility. You cannot change the circumstances, the seasons, or the wind, but you can change yourself. That is something you have charge of.
    Jim Rohn”
“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.
    Benjamin Franklin”
“He who learns but does not think, is lost! He who thinks but does not learn is in great danger.
    Confucius”

It depends on how you accept it.. from our educational standpoint.. a piece of paper will cost a poor boy or girl a great deal of money.. this in turns keeps them in the class of society that they were taught they belonged in..
the motto of the marines comes into mind here..
“Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change.
    Stephen Hawking”
“If there is no struggle, there is no progress.
    Frederick Douglass”
    “Improvise, Adapt and Overcome”
depending on your business model.. overcome and use what you have learned.. it sure opened my eyes.. ( or eye.. since I only have one LOL) and move forward..
the SEAHAWKS… great team.. they go out and play the game.. they give it their best.. hit hard.. then you see that little something you don’t see anymore.. if the player knocks another to the ground in the game.. out shoots his hand to give the opposite player on the ground a hand up.. every time.. team spirit.. play the game but remember it is just the game.. the hand up is sportsmanship..
because of my life experiences I have opened my eyes and can see what is going on with others.. its as obvious because I have been there.. done that.. we all live similar lives.. we have similar struggles.. but can you overcome and adapt to them.. smile at someone say good mornig etc.. the small four word conversations.. HOW WAS YOUR DAY… HOW ARE YOU DOING WHAT IS GOING ON etc.. can I help you.. my mother asked each one of us kids how was your day.. after school.. or when dad got home it was the ice breaker.. let us and dad unwind and then discuss it.. to overcome..
accept the position you live in and make changes.. I live pretty good myself on what I make.. I have overcome I learned how and did it.. it was hard.. but I didn’t sell my soul for a number or a cartoon coin.. I have to live with in the circle of accepting it.. but it doesn’t devour me.. so am I a loser if it deals with selling your soul for a number then yes.. but I have adapted to my life and accept my position in society and I reach down and offer a hand up to those that have fallen.. they are not looking for a hand out.. but a hand up….
    god bless everyone..

    • MARTIN ARMSTRONG: South Korea’s diplomatic policy dictates that it will not send ammunition to countries at war. The recently leaked documents from the Pentagon reveal that the US is bullying South Korea into breaking its policy to arm Ukraine. Worse, the documents reveal that US intelligence agencies have been spying on South Korea. This is an unfortunate start to President Yoon Suk Yeol’s meeting with President Joe Biden scheduled for April 26.

Why is the US risking its international alliances to fight a foreign war? The Biden Administration has completely abandoned domestic policy in favor of fighting a war on behalf of Ukraine. Countries previously yielded to the demands of the US as its military and economic power made it the key ally. Things have changed. Nations are increasingly distancing themselves from the US as the country spirals down a dark path that has already shaken its superpower status.

Because his daddy, who visited the WH over 300 times when 44 was da Prez, isn’t as spry as he used to be.

  6. “ Dalai Lama, 87, apologises after kissing young boy on the lips and asking child to ‘suck’ his tongue.”

I always wondered where “kiss my a__” came from. I suspected it was Buddha. Now at least we will know where “suck my tongue” or “sniff my hair” originated.

    • I’m appalled by the Dalai Lama. If he’s that comfortable doing something like that in public, I’m afraid to think what is done privately. – That wasn’t just joking, nor was it spiritual by any means. His tongue was in the kid’s mouth and it was provoked. That’s child abuse and he should be locked up.

      • In public, and with cameras rolling.

THAT completely grossed me out, and that is something I haven’t said about anything on real life TV since Joe Theismann’s career got ended…

  7. Looks as though “The Recession” has been kicked a little further down the road. Two weeks ago, it was – we are all going to die as every bank is going to collapse – and of course, nothing really happened as The Fed and Treasury both threw billions in through the back door of the banks to bolster their deposits. Now it seems that “The upcoming Credit Crunch” will collapse the economy and we will all fall gasping into a massive recession.
    – With just the right amount of ‘slap-n-tickle’ The Fed / Treasury could keep pushing the predicted recession down the road for quite some time. Until after the next election ?
With no international ‘blow-ups’.., it looks quite possible.
Remember – the stock market has never collapsed ‘before’ a recession.

  8. With in-bound shipping down substantially at the California ports.,
What does it cost to transit the Panama Canal – as of April First:
The Panama Canal Authority as of April 2022: container ships will now pay $60,000 to $300,000 depending on their size, and then additional fees based on the number of containers the ships are carrying.
A typical cruise ship will pay $56,000. On your sail boat? If under 65 feet – $1,750
The cost for reserving your slot to go through the canal is $10,500 for ships less than 91 feet long and the fee jumps to $40,000 and $50,000 for ships bigger than 107 feet long. If you decide you want to stick around, moorage and anchorage fees start at $75 a day for the first 30 days. There is also a $75 inspection for all small vessels, regardless of size.
    – The record cost of going through the Canal was just set a few days ago – an incredible $1.1 million dollars. No wonder this canal supplies 12% of Panama’s gross domestic product. 14,200 ships passed through the canal last year. [ 40 a day ]
    – Why do they pay such huge fees? To go around the southern tip of South America adds an additional 22 days sailing, and it can be a very dangerous route. That can be expensive for large ships., and additional transit insurance.

feat. a Chinese Boxer, a French Poodle, and a Belgian Sheepdog

    Folks,

Only one month to go until the 147th edition of Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is trotted out at Madison Square Gardens. Perhaps a preliminary round of the show’s opening 8th Annual Masters Obedience Championship was played out in Beijing last week.

A French leader spoke his lines to the delight of the Keepers of the Gate of Heavenly Peace in the Imperial City. A red carpet treat ment rolled out accordingly. In contrast, the European Commissioner barked words which perhaps brought discomfort to the ears of the Chinese President who did not climb down stairs from his throne to the unleashed area of greeting. The tail does not wag the dog? Upon departure, msm cameras at Beijing Airport captured the Euwepean Bloc leader walking through a standard passenger metal detector like the minions enroute to her plane and unaccompanied by any senior Chinese mandarin. I believe there is nothing left to declare.

    • Interesting observation. I had not paid attention to the fact that the Commisar was even in China let alone on leaving had to walk through a metal detector like a commoner when she left. (btw … did she talk about the fact that her great (great?) grandpappy owned a bunch of slaves in the US? 200 is the number I think)

Symbolism and “FACE” means a LOT in Asian Countries … China being right up there near the top, maybe it even being more important to them than to the Japanese. The symbolism of that act says it all.

Do not forget that when Obama went to China in 2014 the Chinese REFUSED to put stairs up to the door, and NO red carpet at the bottom of the stairs, and Obama had to deplane via the belly level exit of the 747 (which has it’s own built in set of stairs). Another MAJOR SNUB intended to convey a message.

      feat. Rodney Dangerfield

      Folks,

Leslie Neilsen ratings may go through the roof. The BBC published an image of Clan Biden boarding Air Force One destined to Belfast, Northern Ireland. The President, son Hunter, and daughter Valerie each turned to the camera while styling identical aviator sunglasses. It’s an absolute “Airplane” moment. Current weather in Ireland calls for wind and rain with a storm warning lurking about.

Publicly released official schedules reflect that His Majesty’s most loyal civil servant, Mr. Sunak (tr. ‘good son’?), will greet a deplaning Mr. Biden and family at Belfast.

It is a shame that the President is unable to attend the Coronation next month. Likewise Mr. Sunak is otherwise occupied and unable to attend Mr. Biden’s main speech tomorrow at a university. An originally planned address to elected politicians is off.

At least the abbreviated Irish Tour leg should allow everyone to get back to America in time for the weekend.

  10. Going to repeat a post I made a couple of days back which people may not have seen if they don’t go back later:

    Chinese WAR mindset

To see how the Chinese people are being prepped for a MAJOR WAR you need to go out and watch the worldwide highest grossing film of 2020, and by far the highest grossing film in China during the lock down period. “The Eight Hundred” FREE via TUBI on your Roku box.

The movie is about the final stand by the Chinese Military in Shanghai when the Japanese invaded China. It is actually very well done and although dubbed in English it is dubbed so well that it is almost unnoticable. A story of SACRIFICE by the soldiers for the benefit of the Chinese people … and the movie hews to the real events in virtually every detail, including the gore involved.

Mood … leads events … which leads markets.

As you watch this film you can see how it is being used to MOTIVATE the Chinese people wrt WAR … to which you have to keep in mind that because of movie lead times they had to start working on the movie about 4 years before it’s release (come up with the movie outline, write a script, hire the actors, shoot the movie, edit the movie, and finally release it) which means the Chinese were working on this film BEFORE Donald Trump became President in Jan 2017.

Chinese sacrifice for the nation during War. A primer for the Chinese people for upcoming events. Biggest grossing Chinese movie of 2020. Watch it … and you will get a better understanding of what the US is wading into wrt China and Taiwan.

  11. Yo G, Everything is a business mode, ran across an interesting bit of legalese that only members of the club are aware. The 12 presumptions of court. See :
    https://ia802500.us.archive.org/8/items/12-presumptions-of-court/12PresumptionsOfCourt.pdf
Under presumption #7 we are all considered paupers in the eyes of the court, confirmed by the P on your passport. This document is absolutely mind blowing. Be careful how you tread when you “cross the bar”.

    • Once upon a time in the Lone Star state, judges of all sort were elected, not appointed. The voters had the final say on who sat on the bench in the general election. Then came electronic balloting, and the voter’s last defense against Bar Association and judicial corruption, the write-in vote, disappeared. Next, the judges running unopposed were declared elected, without having to receive a single vote in the general election.
The courts appear to realign themselves each general election to insure that the unelectable and un-appointable Bar slate candidates run unopposed. It isn’t really clear if the judges are even being scrutinized by their partisan gang sponsors in the primaries. The Texas “independent judiciary” is, in fact, independent of any real scrutiny whatsoever. Only the wealthiest of political donors have any say in anything.
Neither the Executive branch, State legislature nor the voters control who sits on the Texas bench. The State of Texas is run by Bar dictatorship, which answers to no one except their Bar cronies, and major political donors, working outside of Public scrutiny or recourse.
MOLS- Ure “presumptions” document looks overly optimistic from my viewpoint.

  12. Waiting for my grandkid to get out of school every week day has allowed me to do what I truly enjoy which is reading. I’m finally getting to read those books I’ve had on the shelf for years and the current one is “Killing Patton”. I’m down the the last few chapters and it is the most depressing book I’ve read to date. What was given away, the people that were betrayed, the treason that was committed within and without our borders by those in power and how Eisenhower went along with it … and so much else is a real heart breaker. We live in a fabrication of what our Founders intended and still don’t know it and those that do won’t acknowledge it.

Here’s a great rant from Yankee Stacking’s Tim the coin dealer:
