President 47’s Long Wave Nightmare, Data Driven Thurs

Markets fell on their collective asses Wednesday. And the early futures today were not telling of a turn higher.  Part of that due to GDP dropping but we’ll get to that in a second. Before getting in line at a high window, or bridge, let’s consider that short-term hype is still possible.  Let me show you a chart.

On the right side, notice the (ascendant) pink trend channel.  While it looked like we were enroute to the top of channel last week, today it looks more likely that we will have a “bounce” at some point off the bottom of this channel.  Nothing would surprise us less than going “down to channel” which sets up the perfect “Ready to go either way” with the Fed meeting next week and announcement Friday.

Predictive Entrainment (2)

Pardon my saying so, but the Peoplenomics report Wednesday is one all market “anticipators” might want to study. Because it takes up (without the heavy math) from the geophysical basis of Dider Sornette’s genius level work in his book Why Stock Markets Crash: Critical Events in Complex Financial Systems (Princeton Science Library, 49) Revised Edition.

There are two easy – and one very hard – data entrainments in play right now that will determine the future course of humanity.  But they are all based on a simple notion that arose when (really) smart people (like Sornette) looked at entrainment between geophysical data series of similar items.  Say historical seismic data from a specific lat-long off the coast of Washington if you’re looking for when the next Killer Tsunami will wash down the Strait of Juan de Fuca and wipe-out $6 trillion of business value in the PNW.  As I wrote:

“As the first chart above shows, the usefulness of the two-market lineup seems limited. However (on Sornette and others) we know that directional changes are accompanied by mathematically definable bounds. In short, around the Big Mothers (Alaska 64, Honshu, etc.) you get this rise in “turbulence” at least in geophysics. We need to complete the present market in order to claim victory over poverty…”

This leaves us agape and a-gewgaw at the two chart indicators now pending resolution.  In the chart (above) this morning, we can state the problem as “Will the lower (pink) trend channel hold?  Or, on the Fed decision next week, will be see the Fed lower, thus ensuring a sell-off of perhaps 35-45 percent down from present market levels?  OR will the Fed old off and we will have a brief (to Labor Day) period of quiescence before the Fed lowers in September. This latter is the case my consigliere has been cheerleading for months, now.

The blue Aggregate chart above does not employ the entrainment notion.  It’s what we call the “El-Chan” (Elliott and Channels) view.  Charts can always be marked with channels and wave counting can be useful, so this is the A#1 choice for considering where to place Widow and Orphan money on the Wall St. KENO board.

The Actual Entrainment view (versus 1 1929 Dow model) comes out like this:

The whole point of “entrainment” studies, like this one, is not to call the “directional” but rather as a tool to assess the likelihood of a change-shift being in place.

Case A-1 suggests we are “deep in it” already.  But the A-2 case can be seen as inferring that we still have some ways to go before the real “new direction” becomes clear, and thus (looking at the other chart, the blue one above this) we expect based on entrainment (theory) that this is a decisive change.  Only question is when it takes place.  Because the “preshocks” were seen with an out of channel peak in the September 11-14, 2023 area and the lows of October followed.  Question on deck here is whether the “turbulence” was a tradeable indicator in advance of the rally up from that point.

Long Wave Problems are another Matter

As economic cycles run, America has been in a huge one.  From the Obama lows of March 2009, we have sailed up for 15-years and 4-months.  The run-up to the Great Depression (starting point peak) was on the other Only from August of 1921 up to September (3rd) of 1929.  Meaning a cycle length of about 8-years.

Was there a hesitation in the present cycle’s advance in the 2015-2018 area?  Covid count?   No, not so much. Which means credit where due to the Fed.  the avoided collapse and set up what counts now as an X-wave (or a final 5 up) that could resolve before Thanksgiving.

It all sums up, in our thinking, as a very bad year for the 47th president.  It’s political speak that “new Presidents should get their recession out of the way early in their terms...”  We think odds of 2025 (and beyond) suck.

In the end, it’s all going to come down to Politics. But let’s take a “data break” and look at some numbers first.

GDP and More

We are watching today from the sidelines, again, because there is so much news flow (and Biden speech critiquing) that odds are that a massive rally to Labor Day could take place.  Consider the Fed bets and less than 10% of participants expect a rate cut next week.  That could send the market higher.

Here’s this morning’s pile of statistical decision support:

GDP

Just out: “Real gross domestic product (GDP) increased at an annual rate of 2.8 percent in the second quarter of 2024, according to the “advance” estimate. In the first quarter, real GDP increased 1.4 percent. The increase in the second quarter primarily reflected increases in consumer spending, inventory investment, and business investment. Imports, which are a subtraction in the calculation of GDP, increased.

Durable Goods

Bummer:  New Orders
New orders for manufactured durable goods in June, down following four consecutive monthly increases, decreased $18.6 billion or 6.6 percent to $264.5 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced today. This followed a 0.1 percent May increase. Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.5 percent. Excluding defense, new orders decreased 7.0 percent. Transportation equipment, down two of the last three months, drove the decrease, $19.6 billion or 20.5 percent to $75.8 billion.

After the data, we got a wash of red through the Future’s market, but we’ll take a more studied look after the Original Amateur Hour at the open… The market bounced back ahead of the open so maybe a rally into Friday’s close from this largely oversold market.

Home prices are still nuts.  Homes for Sale in Manhattan and Queens – The New York Times (nytimes.com).  One condo listed works out to $2,319 per square foot.  Repeat after me: “Kiss my….” the commodity lumber contract is running a shade under $500 today.  Which means wood is under 50-cents a board foot (which is 12x12x1 inch thick.  Golly. We keep sending highly skilled illegals to NYC to lower building prices too…sheesh!

Home Prices are nuts #2:  From Census: “Sales of new single-family houses in June 2024 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 617,000. This is 0.6 percent (+/- 14.6%)* below the revised May 2024 estimate of 621,000.”  Check me on this (here) but looks like Housing prices peaked Q4  2022 for this cycle.  See comments by N___ over here – very cogent thinking about tiny homes and where that’s all going.

At the Ranch: Shortwave and Weather Stations

With any luck, one of my sons-in-law – visiting for the weekend – will help me hoist the replacement inverter into position. Holding 60-pounds with one hand, while manhandling an impact driver and bolts is something that at age 75 kind of, oh, you know.

Once everything is back to “normal” (or what we try to pass off as normal) we have three fun projects on tap for ShopTalk Sunday sessions you want to start thinking about.

One project will be to develop a local to your location Shortwave listening guide.  I think the Crowdstrike debacle has about done-in the last of my confidence in “the net”.  If there is EMP associated with the pending NATO-Russia war, it will be useful to know what’s still up on shortwave.  Even thought shortwave, itself, has been under attack by the internet.  We knew this when Radio Havana starting podcasting in preference to HF radio transmissions several years back.

The second project will be a low-tech weather station. I’d like something that would (optionally) feed into the private weather networks and would give some incremental upgrade to NOAA weather.  The problem I’m having (as the author of The 100-Year Toaster) is “What good will a weather forecast do you?  If it doesn’t give a measurable benefit, WTF why spend money on it!”

The usual fare will be along, shortly.  Weather looks to warm back up next week but what a great break from summer heat in this cold patch. Got a summer set of some tomatoes, too!

  5. Both projects are intriguing, especially the weather. Out here where the busses don’t run the weather is the first thing to check in the morning…after breathing. I had a La Crosse “Pro” weather station a few years ago that required using a dongle to download data from the monitor station into a spreadsheet and also offered a connection to their servers that I never used. Only lasted a few months before it died. Think lightning may have got it. Since then we have been getting along with our old Dekalb Seed thermometer, whatever glass tube rain gauge MFA is giving away at the time, and a cheapo wireless thermometer for the hoopty. There are lots of sub $200 weather stations on Amazon but since they most likely all come from you know where their longevity and reliability are questionable. I’ve been looking at the Meshtastic devices but it seems to be way more time and labor intensive compared to off the shelf equipment.

    • I had a LaCrosse weather station, new in box from a garage sale. The 433mhz wireless outdoor gadgets didn’t play well around my ham station transmitter, so I Cat5 outdoor hardwired it all together. Worked about a year before things rotted and clogged up in tropical mold and algae weather. Some local hams have “AccuRite” stations, but again the plastic whizzys don’t last in tropical rainforest conditions. My calibrated glass thermometer is still the best. “Calibrated” I say. Stick it in ice water, and if it doesn’t read 32F then carefully slide the tube until it does, and glue in place. Two of three I purchased were off by four degrees. My rain gauge is a 5 gal bucket. That measured 52″ during Hurricane lane. Official gauge a few miles up the road measured 54″. Close enough. While the net works, I like the Weather Underground sites. There’s one in my neighborhood.

      • No Weather underground stations in our area but there is one weather girl out of Springfield who is easy to watch. This has me thinking about whipping up a good old whirly gig for a weather vane to add to my Dekalb Seed thermometer and the MFA rain guage that’s broken and needs to be replaced by another freebie. But then I would need to get the gasp, ladder out to mount it on top of the shop. Then all I need to do is coble up some way to get the readings rit down somewhere for me.

  7. In all my years of “SWLing” (shortwave listening, which includes standard AM band), I’ve never found a useful SW listening guide. Station’s schedules change too often, and unpredictably; and hour-by-hour radio propagaion of signals shifts constantly.

    Individual and timely “spots,” as they’re called, ARE useful because they are actualities. As an example, BBC at midnight Eastern Summer Time on 12.095 mHz is VERY reliable. Variability in propagation is still a factor, but “Auntie Beeb” herself is quite reliable.

    Another example is Hal Turner, political hysteric and muckraker, 5.95 mHz at 9 pm M-F. (Turner is frequently wrong, but never in doubt.)

    Mostly, SWLing is “hunting.”

    Governments and private entities ARE seeing and investing in a resurgence in Shortwave, however. Right now is probably the all-time low point. Broadcsters went internet — which is cheap, BUT is easily censored and traced. Broadcasting from a single point to the entire desired broad reception area is NOT tracked.

    Receivership remains anonymous, which is preferred in repressive societies where there may be bad consequences to listening to unapproved transmissions from enemy countries.

    Internet may also be selectively filtered easily for objectionable content by any tin-pot dictator. Shortwave is difficult to prevent. (Although the Russians tried mightily to jam Radio Free Europe and Voice of America and BBC for many years with only poor success.)

    Background.

    The trend is, and will be, UP for some time to come as broadcasters seek paths around the filters and censors.

  10. hoist the replacement inverter into position – maybe a floor jack with the inverter on some kind of wooden frame, that will go to proper height. Or best case get a cart that has a built in jack designed for such purposes. Don’t want to drop the inverter or damage back or feet. Any accident will cost far more the value of electricity you are likely to generate.

    think about that..Depending on that the payment is around 4 grand a month for 30 years.. not counting taxes insurance utilities or any of the other expenses.. The average income would have to be a minimum of 60 dollars an hour.. the average price of a home here is shy a quarter mil.. every grocery store sacked has to clear a minimum of thirty dollars an hour..just for a place to live add health insurance that’s another twenty an hour…have kids. there you go another ten dollars an hour per child.. just for daycare… and what about the rest.. so how many can afford this..what company can afford this.. so far everyone is living on plastic..plastic is finite and will come to an end..putting all the blocks in a straight tower without a strong base will fall over.. toddler building with blocks law.. pulling the Kings blocks out of the pile and putting them on top will fall over..

      a friend of the daughters stopped by tonight to visit after her golf game.. she teaches in highschool.. her husband is a truck driver… the kids and the wife and I was out.. they just bought a house in that range LOL LOL… she was showing us photos of it… all the appliances stay.. and all the furniture etc.. Now I didn’t ask her what her payments were going to be.. but the daughter did.. ( oh they have an old piano that they are going to toss out.. I asked is it really old.. like the ones that have real Ivory keys.. then I wanted a few of the keys.. but it isn’t.. just the plastic ones..and the boss said no more projects LOL)
      ok.. knowing what they make.. the house payment and taxes and insurances.. are.. get this.. just shy ten grand a month.. and with all the rest of the stuff.. the utilities car payments etc.. etc.. the they have to have over twenty grand a month for everything.. not counting the house is a great deal further so there will be driving involved and other expenses they have not thought about.. I did ask after she mentioned how much the payments were.. it is wise to do that.. your paying around a thousand a month now.. the place is bigger.. but you have a nice house now.. that kind of money.. is actually more than what they make a year not counting the income taxes and social security health insurance etc..we are talking about a substantial increase in living expenses several times over.. and salesmen can make you think you can afford it.. the bank doesn’t care it has to lend money out and as long as you have good credit they aren’t going to question your plans.. ..I told her hun I am not trying to but in or squash your plans but seriously how are you going to afford this massive increase in living expenses.. I know the school doesn’t pay you that much.. and I know what your husband makes driving cross country heavy hauler…. well she was thinking they would do away with a lot of the other stuff.. like right now they eat out occasionally and they play golf.. etc.. but that isn’t going to make up the extra money you take in or the increases in the cost of living because of inflation…. so she said well we have considered getting part time jobs.. I said don’t be me.. you see what my working day and night did to me and you do have to sleep once in a while is the house worth it…. think about this.. you can still back out of this deal closing is in a month.. and so what if you have a smaller place it is ten times less money and you are doing ok.. right where you are.. I didn’t find out what interest rate they are going to pay.. but dam…. I about fell off my chair …shocked.. they should have kept the first place they owned.. it was twice as big had everything they needed lots of room.. and it was ten times cheaper.. so they sold it.. for a lot less and it had a few acres on it.. nice place.. between the two of them they won’t even make the living expenses.. amazing..

      • You might want to get the spare bedroom cleaned up – with a couple extra beds in it. They are going to need a place to live in eight to ten months.

        • yeah I hear ya..they are not thinking at all.. their living expenses will conservatively be forty grand more than they take in gross wages. I don’t know for sure but I will estimate they have ten to twenty in credit card debt to.. everyone is living on plastic around here..
          she’s a little older than Andy to..so she will never own that home..she could cut the years down by paying an extra amount. just get the amortization schedule find out what’s going to principle .are am extra payment..and depending on which bank she could split the payments cutting the years down to half..( I have done that with a few loans )
          that doesn’t even consider the rate of inflation..now if we go totally Zimbabwe. she might be able to pay it off with what a future loaf of bread costs..

        • The truly sad part is that is the new normal..a few years ago I thought a. ink bed in San Francisco for two grand a month was out of reason..today people making less than a quarter mil a year are screwed in housing.. the new low income apartment prices have reached 2 grand a month…plus all the utilities and other expenses..which puts the grocery sacker clerk at having to make 30 dollars an hour … won’t be long and around the wastelands quarter mil a year will qualify you for food stamps similar to San fran.. it will balloon out from here.. is your investment interest rates keeping up?

        • I don’t see how they can qualify for the loan. The banks seem to target the school teachers. LOOB needs to get them into a professional debt counselor who can show them how long they will last. They won’t make it to the spring selling season, and they will be bankrupted, penniless and debt ridden for what’s left of their lives. No such thing as mortgage debt forgiveness. I would say that a tiny home family is being born, but they’ll never recover sufficiently for that. I can’t comprehend any normal family taking on a debt load like that.

When Dad was his credit union’s loan officer, (um, that would’ve been back in the 1960s) he told me no agency would make a home loan in which the payments would exceed 28% of a family’s net monthly income. AFAIK that did not change until the Dems in Congress managed to push through a bill which removed the guardrails, back in the early 2000s, with Bush43 in the White House and a Republican majority in the House. This bill lead to many home loans being made to un-creditworthy poor, mostly Black and Hispanic, suckers, who then defaulted, leading to the housing crisis, the birth of the Tea Party, and the Democrat slaughter in the House, led by Nancy Pelosi.

        This is one of the dangers of the passage of bills by alleged “legislators,” before they’re read and understood…

    4 years ago it was half that.. thirty years ago it was 4 to 6 …
    35 years ago it was less than that.. nurses made 4.50 in 90.. techs and aides made 3.75.. now if you have never seen a doctor for anything in your life health insurance is ten dollars an hour take home.. if you have family coverage its more..and they don’t pay a dime u til you have paid in the high deductible..

        the difference under Trump was PRICE.. the economy stayed fairly steady.. not runaway like it is now. He worked diligently to do things for the people of the USA not just for the people on top..
        the best I ever did in my life.. was when I made less than three dollars an hour a house payment was under a hundred a month and electricity a large electric bill was fifteen dollars a month.. A months worth of groceries for a family of four was less than a hundred dollars… silly.. you obviously don’t see the whole picture..
        There isn’t a blue sky its like a marriage..Give and Take. when the graph flips.. and there is more taking than giving then one side feels as if they are being subjected to .. that is why women seek out a man that can be a stable mate in a give take relationship..If either side is taking more than giving then there is an issue..if it is only about the one at the top those at the bottom will feel it the most..weimar.. greece, zimbabwe, argintina ,, france and the queen and the well if they don’t like it. then let them eat cake comment…. and its going to come to a head..
        there is an fine balance of the flow of cash to keep their lives steady … without change the vast majority are living on credit cards.. when you use the credit card to buy basic living .. then it is a matter of time..

    • That sucks. In the Midwest, nurses were making $56/hr (RNs… LPNs were only making $42-$46) , back in ~1975. At least that’s what the “Help Wanted” ads in the big city papers were touting. Dad tried to get me to go back to school for nursing, because the ones he knew were pulling down 80 large plus bennies on a 36hr work week, and computer jockeys (my actual major) were only at about 14 plus, but on a 60hr week. I was tooting my horn, working on cars, driving little cars big fast, working for a UAW satellite, and single — oh and young & stupid…

        Back in the seventies when I worked nursing homes.. we were volunteers.. they had one paid assistant and the wages were a buck and a half . an hour.. nurses made I believe three dollars an hour.. they used volunteers up until 1990.. got some great volunteer stories for you.. when I met my wife she was making 4.50 an hour in 87… the more experienced nurses made 4.75and those with years of service made between five and six dollars an hour.. CNA’s made 3.75… the hospital to do away with the cost of the five dollar an hour nurses fired three fourths of them and replaced them with CNA’s.. today they still do that.. they have one nurse and fifteen CNA’s.. med techs x-ray techs iv techs.. etc.. those wages are for today not in the early seventies.. NOW.. the VA healthcare system in 87 paid a wage of eight dollars an hour for nurses and five fifty for CNA’s but they had a freeze on hiring so it was almost impossible to get in there.. I tried for over thirty years to get in at the VA long term care unit.. I believe they were making .. that is what the average nurse and LPN make well a lot less than that…. well I take that back a friend that works the helecopter makes 85.00 an hour.. three on four off rotating shifts..
        in 92 they raised the wages of the cna’s up to four dollars an hour.. the nurses were furious.. the hospital had laid off most of their nursing staff.. ( at a luncheon with the CEO I asked him about that.. he said if he could he would take a bus down to the mexican border because he could get five nurses for the price of one there)
        the administrator begged them to stay on.. she was going to make sure they got a great wage.. the wage was one cent.. LOL LOL LOL…
        in 94 they raised wages to five dollars for the CNA’s.. I never made more than ten fifty an hour.. at the place the wife works now.. the nurses make thirty something an hour.. they rotate between facilities.. this year the US govt. is changing all the regulated proceedures etc.. it may close the facility.. the facility isn’t making a dime now.. the reason is for a govt facility the cost of what they want the place to have.. is divided up among everyone.. here they don’t have that option or the other options that govt does.. so they have to make a profit.. they are not making a dime now.. the wife.. she makes fourteen dollars and fifty cents as a PRN floor nurse Now on that.. govt medical facilities.. they made big money compared to what nursing facilities and hospital floor nurses made.. I am not to sure.. I will be seeing my friend tonight that works for the Dept of social services.. he is one of the inspectors.. so I will ask him just what those yahoos make.. my guess is he is going to tell me… INOMB.. .govt nurses and doctors get the golden goose medical policies to.. my sister is head nurse in the PNW for a VA hospital.. their insurance.. ( retired military ) is so low that she literally cannot imagine how people complain about the cost of insurance.. I think they pay some god forsaken peanuts amount like two hundred a month with a two hundred dollar deductible..

        I pay a grand a month just for my medications..

        this job as a case manager at the MAYO clinic is thirty five to fifty dollars an hour.. and you have to have a lot of experience..
        I don’t know what they paid in the big cities.. though.. I know one nurse moved to Chicago in 1996 because they would pay her thirty grand a year and paid for her moving expenses and guaranteed her house loan for her.. six months later she came back home.. seems they had to have a police officer escort them to their cars..

      they haven’t been paying any attention..these countries have been playing up to the NATO fiat currency countries to set them up..while we have been neglecting our citizens and infrastructure they have been making preparations for their people and shoring up their infrastructure.. we play the get more for billy big bucks.. and charging the taxpayers..they now have positioned and gotten us to disperse our military in so many places.. i believe that we have been writing numbers so fast and inflation is so high.. plastic will end and we are vulnerable in industry, distribution,and education..

    • Well, maybe we’ll have a rousing good apocalypse next July 25th, Hank. Stu has things to say about Paris Olympics starting today. I expect between now and the end of January, there will be ample opportunity for the Group B Personality Disorder crowd we sometimes refer to as “leaders” to wreck things in general.
