Welcome to Pop or Drop Friday.  Where the outcome will be decided by the Jobs Report and the confounding logic of modern markets.

Short Term First

We have to begin with this story making the rounds because it’s how the money was being placed on the Roulette Table before the open:  Trader makes massive bet Treasuries will get slammed after jobs report.

This is fascinating from several angles.  The first is that if the Treasuries get slammed, it will mean more money flowing out of bonds and into stocks.

Which MIGHT mean the set up early this morning (with the Bears being in control of the pre-open) might just be setting the table for a Bull Run today of perhaps several hundred points.  OR the trade could be wrong and the jobs number will be so-so, keeping alive hopes of lower rates, which would rally bonds on the theory that weak jobs numbers would allow the Fed to keep open the odds of an early rate decline.

Honestly, though, we’re in the “weighting of opposing headlines problem.”  Where while rates are high, we also have the highest National Debt ever, screaming through $34 trillion this week on our way to $35 trillion next.  Thanks to Easy Money Joe (driven to financial idiocy by elections this year) the demonscraps are likely to keep heaping on the spending and public handouts until the election.

The real screw job will come in 2o25 when both parties will be forced to reconcile enough to keep the financial system from imploding.  Which means? Higher Taxes. Yours.

Since socialism is going viral at all woke levels, the reason to make shitloads of money is losing a good bit of its luster, but that’s why we live a low income but debt-free lifestyle, but that’s a whole Peoplenomics report one of these days.

Hardly consoling, but even my own children don’t fully internalize that there’s little difference between a small town, paid for life for $50K combined income (with no debt) and $150K combined income in a big city where you pay for everything and need the dependable car, gas money, daycare, yada, yada.  Back out gas, rent, commute times…don’t get me started.  Where were we?

Jobs Numbers and Lying Hype

Without further ado, here is the number that the financial press cites:

“Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 216,000 in December, and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 3.7 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Employment continued to trend up in government, health care, social assistance, and construction, while transportation and warehousing lost jobs.”

We, as always, have a much different view of things.  For two reasons.

First is we look ONLY at the total number of people working for the latest reporting month. And that’s shown in today’s entry in the Labor Department Database which looks like this.  Refer to the lowest right corner:

HORRIBLY MISLEADING PRESS RELEASE, HUH?

Number of civilians working dropped 683-THOUSAND.

Second point is the numbers all have a fair amount of “English” on them, to borrow the pool hall vernacular for “spin.”  In that in the gig economy, so much of the data is just estimated as well as they can.  So, how many jobs were just “made up”?

CES backed out 167-thou?  Say what?

Meanwhile, you see the database, now please explain how this headline makes sense, wouldja? December jobs report: US economy adds 216,000 jobs, shocking Wall Street again.

No shock to people who can look in the database, is it?

Can We Bounce?

Well, that’s a hell of a question, isn’t it?  If you go back and look at our column for December 14th (here, down in a ways) look at the differential moving average chart then.

Now, here’s where we were in the preopen today, after I posited earlier this week (Peoplenomics) that we could come down, through the supporting trend line (which we have) and then have a manic rally back up to trend which would be the Kiss of Death and then we are balls to the wall on the downside, likely.

I don’t know where we will be at the close of today’s action, but the likelihood of a head and shoulders top to polish off the macro wave 2 in this view is probably still well north of zero:

Being (more than a touch) ADHD, I tend to trade too early and too fast.  So my outlook of the “halving by Christmas” didn’t happen and I’m not ashamed to admit that.  But is there still a halving to come?

Maybe – if the market can’t get through an inflation-adjusted rally to higher than our Aggregate Index from Nov. 2021, then the odds are very high.

Instead, we will just watch, snipe at short-side trades, and collect lunch money while contemplating what to do for my 75th birthday next month.  Sleep?

G.A. Stewart’s Troubling Discussion

Stu ‘s probably the most ripped-off Nostradamus expert in the world.  And it was dandy to be cited as one of the few credible in the alt. whatever this is.

But the troubling part of his post on The Age of Desolation Website was this part this week:

“Once Iran enters the Israeli-Hamas War and The First Blow of Steel comes, say goodbye to civilization as you know it. China will move on Taiwan soon-after, and there goes the supply chain.”

His post is called “Right Again- Beware of What Comes Next” and you really need to take the time to read the whole thing. You should also buy his books, too, but maybe you don’t want to know how this all rolls out.

Thing is, the Future Leaks.  Not everyone can run off into the Dream Realms and get glimpses of it.  Not everyone wants to face it, either. Because with all the test-fitting (how do we get where Nostradamus points?) comes a personal responsibility to proactively take personal action to avoid unnecessary risks.

It’s also kind of interesting in how Stu’s work and mine are in an odd “harmony” (of sorts) at the moment.  I started writing a new book Building a Personal Ark which is being serialized on Peoplenomics.  Which is about how you might consider playing this arriving future.  Stu’s work lays out the most likely channel for that arriving Future to follow.  Which means you can test-fit both with every passing day’s headlines.

Now and then, we also get the odd “other” input – like reader Andy’s occasional glances into Future – which has a flashy day coming up this summer in SoCal, for example.

You don’t have to read this site, Stu’s, or look for Andy’s comments. But, my sense is, when you take all the inputs you can pull in, and triangulate your own best personal future and where it sits, it may point to things to be done.

Or not.  Your call.

Meanwhile, none of us are doom porn peddlers.  Future’s coming no matter what.  How it looks is the problem. We’re all just honest people sharing honest best efforts. And except trying not to come out of pocket to do it, not trying to sell you crap you don’t need.

We have television, streaming, and social…which do a far more effective job on that score.

The Dead End Road

Well, enough.  If you read Stu’s book, look where our market studies point, and draw your own conclusions, you own your own future. If you follow the rest of the herd, ya’ll end up on the truck going to the packing plant.

But the truck’s not here yet, so let’s look around:

You see what’s going on, right? Russia is loading its supply chain for a showdown with NATO.  It’s kind of like a poison pill strategy, too.  If NATO takes on Russia, then they will de facto be taking on both North Korea and Iran at the same time because those folks have deals with Russia now (or will have shortly).

Taiwan elections on the 13th.

The Hama-Israel mess is just a warm-up for the Greater Middle East (oops there goes the energy…) war still to come.

Positions have hardened in Gaza now and no future prisoner releases will be considered by Hamas following the death of an Israeli hostage in captivity.

And we figure it will only be a matter of time until the Israel-Lebanon border war lights up (again): Hezbollah leader threatens Israel, says not afraid of war following death of top Hamas official.

Yucky Politics

Yes, it’s still in style.

Election year and so wrapped in a flag is to be expected: President Joe Biden will stress democracy is still a ‘sacred cause’ in a speech near Valley Forge, He’s not walking it, see the border with Mexico.

Useless efforts to make like former president Trump was somehow on the take as we read Trump received millions of dollars from foreign governments while president, House Democrats allege.  Wait, Trump’s companies, or The Man?  See, the House needs to get glasses.  Not only can’t they find the border, they are also short the mental acuity to understand Trump’s company is not Trump the person in office.

But if they want to go there, want to study Here’s How Much Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor Is Worth (forbes.com)?  Oh that’s different!  Well, sure, uh-huh, of course it is!

Around the Ranch: Writer’s Night

Been up since 3 AM writing today.  Another chapter on the Building a Personal Ark book came rolling out. Because of what Stu said about affordability, in part.  Oh, it can still be done…but that chapter will be on Peoplenomics next week.

Also – since it’s now becoming part of the re-re-re-write of The 100-Year Toaster – I finally have what my (*harsh but right) Houston Bureau editor said was lacking.  A cohesive overall theme.

Came from a conversation with a highly respected 40-year friend in broadcasting who’s trying to figure out how to retire while still owning some number of radio stations.  Told me the whole concept this week without even realizing it.

“George, I can buy almost any voiceover I want for $10 bucks a holler, anymore…“

Two things fell out of that.  Computers are going to make us all obsolete.  But as they do, they will spawn the down cycles of what I project as the Ultra-Wave in Economics.  The one that lasts 5,500 years or so.  The Gobekli Tepe sized waves.

Certainly deserving of a book on its own.  But first, a bit more writing to do on present works.

        It’s not that I’ve not experienced it in my lifetime. There is really nothing to a currency reform and starting from scratch so to speak.
        Our human problem has always been that we want more than we can afford at the time, but the day of settlement is unavoidable.

  6. Some woo woo for you. I woke this morning from a rare lucid dream. I had just pulled into the drive and got out to close the gate. Barney is standing in the middle of the road staring at the gate into the pasture farther down the drive where I found his body after he died. Diana is standing there yelling at him to get back in the pasture before he gets run over. I know, weird.
    I’m heading out earlier this morning to meet up with the Executive Committee and Diana is standing by the window crying. She said she missed Barney. Weirderer.

    • I hesitated to post this morning Jim but your post inspired me to do so. I have rare but very memorable lucid dreams and I had one last night.

      One of my career stops was as a production consulting chemist to the newspaper industry. I spent many nights in major newspapers helping them limp through hiccups in the offset printing process to get the 4 am edition out. These presses were huge (some 3 stories high) and a city block long. Hard to ever forget.

      In last night’s dream, I was standing in the press room and the presses were silent. Workers were destructing (is there such a word?) the presses and I was helping them carry the huge metal parts to the door to waiting trucks to take the parts to the dump. Later in the dream, I was doing the same thing only this time they were “destructing” the building that housed the presses.

      I had this terrible sense of sadness through the dream and think I may have even been crying. But here is the weird part.

      Through the dream and even in slow wakeup mode, I kept hearing/seeing these words. “Let the end be part of your new beginning.” Not once or twice but several times.

      I am approaching 82 and not sure which end the words were referring to. I realize we/me are in a very unique time in history and although there is a ton of “noise” everyday in the main stream media, there are a lot of folks, including George on this site that seem to be tuned in to a different frequency. Maybe I am lucky enough to be one of them.

        it was my dream.. my goal.. had a dark room most of my life.. and took many courses on it.. anyway one of my talents was plate making… and I loved doing diamond etching.. and it got me through the hard early eighties.. well we use to use a projector that ran on railroad tracks because it was so big and heavy.. beautiful unit.. and a flexpress..
        one day a friend came by.. he had the enlarger in the back of his trailer.. and he said.. you want it.. dam I tried to convince myself just what I could do with such a beauty.. the thing new was almost half a million dollars and it was in prime condition.. no.. the wife would shoot me if I filled the garage up with that.. so he hauled it to the dump and got twenty bucks scrap for it..
        a member of my wifes family was the press maintenance man.. they tore it apart and hauled it away to.. the paper had died.. now only one press left in the USA that I know of.. it prints almost all the bigger papers.. we went digital.. the past is but history lesson anymore..

        • We paid $35,000 for an extra-special special effects electronic device (an “Ultimatte 5”) that was hand-tweaked by the inventor, one Peter Vlahos, himself, for a superior level of performance–literally a one-of-a-kind pedigreed Super-Boxx, used for bluescreen/greenscreen video production of what we called in the day, quite justifiably, “Feature Film Quality” video production. It was the cornerstone and beating heart of our field-able “Ultimatte Tp Go” operation, and we and it were constantly busy. Thems were Big Days…

          Much later:
          We rented it out to brand-new Fox News for a (handsome) monthy rental fee just as they were geting started — where it was heavily used for a couple of years, then was a backup “hot standby,” still in the racks in Master Control for a few years more. (The parade had passed our little company by a while ago, and we were in semi-retirement by then.)

          Along to Fox comes some smart-ass young bean-counter, and discovers nobody drawing a paycheck can remember WHY they were still renting it. “Hommina-hommina” didn’t carry the day, and Mr.Bean arranged to terminate our very sweet free ride. He shipped it back. It had ZERO sales appeal by then, and after over a year of trying to find it a new home, I harvested all the BNC adaptors off the back panel (92) and, with a heavy heart, and many happy memories, we carted it to the dump, and lovingly placed it among all the busted TVs and VCS in a vast pile of obsolete electronics.

          * sigh *

          $35,000 to ZERO in a mere ten years.
          (During which, we made a fortune.)

        • My friend still teaches video graphics at George washington u… in georgetown.. or at least he did.. he may be retired now.. amazing how technology changed in such a short time.. we use to process twenty four hundred rolls of kodachrome a day.. now I don’t think anyone in the USA still does kodachrome.. The last place I knew of that still did kodachrome was fox photo.. in Kansas.. the owner of the lab ended up working at a hardware lumber store.. he made clocks as a hobby.. and could get wood cheap there.. we use to use a video analyzer.. dam I loved that thing.. it was easier than flipping filters..
          the lab I use to run.. now has a cool gadget.. you put your digital chip in with the photos on it.. and it converts it digitally to a negative then they enlarge it onto the photo paper process it with the c-41 process and make a regular photo print.. it is definately the ultimate cool.. in satellite imagery.. they did something similar.. it has been a while since i visited with the gent that does it.. heck he could be retired to if he is even still in the area .. LOL LOL he sure would be old enough.. He got into digital long time before it became a fad.. and what he could do with a print.. was amazing.. almost forty years ago now he was able to do some pretty amazing things .. with a computer and that was before windows came out.. a computer bought today is outdated tomorrow.. no more dip n dunks .. and photo processing of x-rays is a thing of the past..

        • William… I built TV stations for a career. I know of what you speak. One of the more shocking realizations of ‘progress’ when we converted over from NTSC analog to the new ATSC Digital TV transmissions was having to throw away a Rhode & Schwarz precision NTSC demodulator. Again, 35-grand over ten years, to junk that cannot be repurposed for anything. I can hear George groaning over throwing away a Rhode ‘anything’.

      • The old Kansas City Star presses were in my sector before they tore the place down. They were huge.
        I rarely remember any dreams myself. Barney was with us a long time here at the ranch. I am still amazed he lived that long. I do miss driving the quad down to his lounge by the pond where we would just look at each other. He would let me get close but not anybody else. I talked to him sometimes but all he ever did was burp and fart but I think he listened too. Diana doesn’t do ranch chores but she really misses him for some reason.

      If you give a think tank or study panel the conclusion (and a handsome down payment) they will generate a “study” (or two, or ten, or 176) which yields that conclusion. Bright, enterprising kiddies have been planting “studies” and treatises like this for 30 years under anonymous pseudonyms, so they could site them in writings done later in their schooling (known fact — I have a genius nephew who started doing this when he was about 13. He has “cited” “previous, peer-reviewed work” authored {and reviewed} by himself, many times over the past 25 years. This is one reason why I pay little attention to “peer-reviewed” anything, ever…)

  9. George, I told Stu a month or so ago that I use his work like a weather forecasting service. The same goes for your work and the other daily intel drags I follow (it’s a short list). I don’t expect anyone to be right all the time. That’s a fools errand. What I look for is trends over time. You and Stu trend the right way enough for it to be useful. In this situation, that’s unfortunate because we’re trending towards something no sane human will want to experience and can truly prepare for.

    There are things all of us can do like trying to stay has healthy as possible (not depending on daily meds to stay alive), keeping plenty of long shelf life food on hand, clean water or the ability to make it, etc. All that’s kinda’ like keeping you car’s gas tank topped off. It’s always a good idea just like all these are good ideas, but may be for naught in the end. That full tank of gas might be a waste of time if you get hit by a dump truck on the way to town. We just don’t know what tomorrow holds.

    • I have been reading George’s website since 2007, and I can say from the outset, that I have wanted to build what he has built, and I have been a bit envious.

      As many gurus as I have listened to about positive thinking and manifesting your wishes, I have discovered that despite my wishes and long hours of visualization, moving to BFE somewhere and getting ready for what is coming was not in the cards dealt to me.

      My course seems to have been locked on to some other course that I did not want.

      Perhaps previous bigger dreams brought me to where I am today. Professionally, (meaning someone other than G.A. Stewart, the self-proclaimed “Nostradamus Expert), I have been very satisfied. For over 25-years, I have been the king of my kingdom and respected by people who I use to dream of being.

      Deciphering the “Nostradamus Puzzle” was a hobby.

      In 2011, Nostradamus’ Dating Code had me worrying that 2011 would bring about “the End of the World.” In a sense, it began with NATO’s attack on Libya. That started the dominoes falling.

      The same applies to the years 2014, 2019, and 2022, which figured prominently in my interpretations of that “Nostradamus’ Dating Code.”

      In 2014, the NATO coup d’état in Ukraine convinced me that G.A. Stewart had a lock on the future. That moment was when I really began to understand the subtlety Nostradamus’ work. It also led me to making bad decisions in my personal life, because the next year to worry about was 2019 and I wanted to get ready.

      That was fear grabbing hold.

      That personal decision set me back a decade. Clearly, having a leg up on the future did not work out for me on that level.

      We now understand; COVID-19 did not bring about the end of the world, but it was a look at what is coming.

      In 2014, I began building for it, but you need a partner on the same page to make it all work… hence, “the best laid plans of mice and men.”

      A decade later, I have become somewhat of a fatalist.

      I have always told George that I believe that we are going to the same night school; so, I understand what he means by taking parallel paths.

      Today, I received an email from a reader who wrote this, “I just wanted to say Thank You for all you do, and for the years upon years of work you have committed to your books and research. You are one of the only people on the web that has integrity, compassion and comprehension about what is going on in our world and beyond.”

      And that is high praise indeed. I have more emails just like that one. And so, G. A. Stewart has also been successful too. Peer respect is all that we can hope for in this world. This is how society and tribes are built… mutual respect.

      I have come to believe that this is all part of the human passion play. What is here and what is coming are all part of the stuff that we have to get through to get to that next plane of human evolution. We all play our part.

      So, my many thanks as always to George and the crew here! It is inspiring. There is a happy ending.

  10. Just an update on my Carnivore Diet. I started it at Thanksgiving and have lost 25 pounds. Many of my large joints still hurt so my RA medicine isn’t working well. But my other autoimmune diseases are clearing up. My psoriasis has disappeared. My dry eyes/mouth has much improved. Normally if you poked me anywhere it would really hurt (fibro whatever it’s called) but that’s not happening any more. My skin is soft and a wart on my forehead has almost disapeared. I’m hardly ever hungry. I feel like I am on the right track for my health. My biggest challenges to this Diet has been family and friends telling me to eat differently or giving me cookies/candy. There is no denying that it helps autoimmune problems.

      just to share some data that may be of interest/benefit to you. I draw Ure attention to L. Ruteri and L. Gasseri yogurt- yogurt cultures. In combination (like 3-1 Ruteri to Gasseri ratio) has proven to be effective protection and shield to Ionizing Radiation.
      L. Ruteri has been missing from Human gut biome for hundreds of years ?
      Very low levels of it in our modern diets. If ever took antibiotics, it is long gone..very sensitive.

Unless you already have property and are trading down, or are a multi-multi-millionaire, any sort of cash real estate deal is looking like a no-go in the current real estate market environment in most locations, especially the ones with employment prospects. Lots with utilities or resources are difficult to come by without HOA’s and god-awful zoning restrictions, even in the country. If you find a lot with existing mobile home water and a septic services, then you might go for an improvised tiny, while you try to gather materials for something bigger/better. Otherwise, $800 a month at an RV park may start looking good.
    Personally, my current plan B back-ups are tents and my 4′ x 6′ trailer, but I could see me doing an upgrade. A 6′ x 10′ or 12′ converted stealth utility trailer RV would be an interesting project, but I have other projects ahead of anything like that, and it would require a vehicle upgrade to pull. Tents can be stealthy and comfortable, for a while, as long as you aren’t on a mountaintop in Montana in the winter. Ted K’s utility shed turned cabin with a wood stove would be about the minimum survivable set up for that sort of location, provided you have a locally sourced fuel (wood, anthracite, etc).
    I expect with the Fed indicating they are about to start loosening policy, that the situation is going to get much much worse. So, if you are in a position to go to a cash living arrangement, you need to make your move, because affordability may be about to start taking another even deeper nose dive by summer. This should be regarded as personal survival counseling, not financial advice. As a country, we have just about BS’d our way out of existence.

    • Hey, there, there are still places left in the USA that are unrestricted. Yes, they are rural. Different size lots are available as low or lower than $35k, with electric, water, and sewer at the street, or can put in a septic system and well.

      Once you buy the land, the rest is yours to invent.

      All you wrote can be done. People, just think like before 1900’s, before, or after….those people made it.

      All the people’s before this time have made it off of their own ingenuity and love and caring for others.

      • It’s a much tougher environment to navigate in right now. Keeping the ego in check and looking for the opportunities that wannabe big shots will pass up is a key attribute. When I bought land in the country, you could hardly give away undeveloped rural properties in this area. When I built my small house, everyone knew that that was fool’s errand and investment. Now, there is a steady stream of sightseers driving through looking for the bargain that is thirty years past. With development encroaching from the ever-expanding suburbs, I am now sitting on potential prime development land. A cash home and land is the best long term investment. Small is good; McMansions are a boat anchor.

        • When we bought our place 44 years ago, it was 35 acres of undeveloped mixed pine and hardwood trees. We paid $750 per acre. Now land around us is going for more than $3,000 per acre, still undeveloped. During those 44 years we have done several harvests of trees, netting us $10,000 to $18,000 per harvest.

          In Texas you must have a minimum of 10 acres to lawfully install your own septic system. We now have 2 septic systems. One was for our old single wide trailer, the second for the newer double wide. We use the old system now as a dump station for our camper. Could serve as a guest camper site with full hookups.

        • Olfart- I’ll wager your land with power, water and septics is worth a lot more than $3000 an acre. I would expect $10,000+ and acre unless you are land locked, off-grid, with a roof water run-off cistern for potable water, and a disputed, encumbered title.
          In Texas, potable water is the biggest item. Power comes next. Septic systems require between 1/2 and 2 acres, depending on soil conditions, system type and the local authority. That 10 acre rule doesn’t jive up with any regulations I have heard of. You might want to check with the local authority on that.

  17. George & MAJ13 have opened me up to some things that seem to be driving me lately. I’m 77 and coming up on two years since my lifemate passed. We were both Army Intel types, she a MAJ, and me a CWO4. She always claimed I had a bit of what her family called “the sight”. In the past two weeks I have vacuum-sealed one banker’s box of spaghetti, one of Rotini veggie twirls, and two of various kinds of dried beans. I’ve got about that much more to do. I’ve got spices and canned meats to go with them. I’ve also been reloading a lot; .223, .308, .30-06, .30-30, and .45-70 as well as several pistol caliberes. I’ve got a range trip tomorrow to check loads, plan any adjustments, and load a bunch more. George clued me in to lithium orotate and I’m taking the 10mg version twice daily and it seems to increase clarity and sense of purpose. This last couple of weeks, I have a real feeling like I am a busy squirrel scurrying to gather nuts before a big snowfall which will obscure everything.

    Fortunately, I’m in the best shape I’ve been for 30 years. I’ve lost 80 lbs. in two years, and on the 31st I walked the fastest 3-mile power walk of the year, 41 minutes and 4 seconds. I almost equaled that two days later. I just retired a pair of walking boots that had close to 600 miles on them in one year. It’s a shame that they had to be held together with Shoe Goo for the last while. I think we’re going to need some kind of “goo” to hold various things together this year and next.     i can remain on the mountain and live out the remainder of my days. i have a good job, im widely respected, there is no lack here. i can run heavy equiptment and drive trains, i have a healthy retirement, 4 months wages and 6 months medical banked. i met a wonderful lady and can settle down. and i want to. there is no lack here. at all. there is some stuff out there like being Engineer certified for long rail train and making a gob of money all summer long. i work on a really good crew with lots of Good Hard working men. and we all get along like brothers. which is rare. ive worked on some shitty crews.

    i have time to wait and see what unfolds. that is wisdom before i decide.

  19. uhem. im not privay to the info of those places like the Fed meeting or Billionairs Retreat. and i dont consciously make plans to be therr. i just end up there.

    my whole plan was to make a million dollars, go to fiji for 6 months lay on the beach and go surfing, sit down at a lap top and write a book. do another website, meet a beautiful austrailian chick and fall in love.

    thats my whole plan. hahaha

    not be sitting in jackson hole wyoming drinking coffee next to the room the fed meeting was taking place to figure out how to unfuck themselves.

    that was not my plan. at all.
