YEAR-OVER-YEAR
The S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller U.S. National Home Price NSA Index, covering all nine U.S. census divisions, reported a 6.4% annual gain in February, up from a 6.0% rise in the previous month. The 10- City Composite showed an increase of 8.0%, up from a 7.4% increase in the previous month. The 20- City Composite posted a year-over-year increase of 7.3%, up from a 6.6% increase in the previous month. San Diego continued to report the highest year-over-year gain among the 20 cities with an 11.4% increase in February, followed by Chicago and Detroit , with an increase of 8.9%. Portland, though still holding the lowest rank after reporting two consecutive months of the smallest year-over-year growth, had a significant increase in annual gain of 2.2% in February.

MONTH-OVER-MONTH
The U.S. National Index, the 20-City Composite, and the 10-City Composite, for the first time since November 2023, showed a pre-seasonality adjustment increase of 0.6%, 0.9% and 1.0% respectively.
After seasonal adjustment, the U.S. National Index posted a month-over-month increase of 0.4%, while the 20-City and the 10-City Composite both reported month-over-month increases of 0.6%.

Follow the Bouncing Waves

As for the larger Reality?  Easy to get lost in the fog of too much data.  But never fear, by using multiple market indicators and then norming them to equally weighted, an Aggregate Index tells us what’s been going on:

The problem is very clear visually like this:  While it sure looks to us like in Elliott wave terms a five wave advance from the lows of late 2022 has been completed, which means a micro ((1)) down is clear and the micro ((2)) up which is what we seem to be in can turn down any time (Fed decision tomorrow, remember!), there is another count.

The Alt. Universe says no, we are going up, up, and away!  Why with this magical thinking, we could rally to any of the Big Holidays that the market tends to observe: Memorial Day, the Fourth, and Labor Day.

Speaking of Markets and Holidays

It’s a notion around Wall St. that markets can run up a bit going into holidays. And when we looked at how our Aggregate performed around Juneteenth last year, market did well:

In the two previous years, 2022 and 2021, the results were less clear.  That’s because the Juneteenth fell on a weekend.

The yellow bars on my spreadsheets help remind me which days are proximate to holidays, while light blue highlights are things like bank settlement days.

What we expect to see happen would be an Israeli move either a) when the markets are closed or b) when there’s an economic data point that deeply disappoints (a Fed rate hike tomorrow, for example), and then the move into Rafah can begin without bringing down markets. Or, at least plausible deniability, yada, yada…

Ukraine Drain

While the war further north continues to grind on, we keep expecting the Russians to make an end run down in the south in order to close Ukrainian sea access for grain exports: WATCH: Shocking Footage Captures Russian Missile Strike Using Cluster Munitions on Odessa (kyivpost.com).  That, along with Russian missile strike on Odesa: death toll rises to five / The New Voice of Ukraine (nv.ua) get us to wondering about what such action would do to world food prices?

Anyone besides us remember the old Mac video game Balance of Power?  If you’re mentally still running on those concepts, another story to keep in mind under “all things military-useful” is this: Indo-Pacific milestone: China’s third and largest aircraft carrier begins sea trials (vid). This is an 80,000 ton carrier, good for supporting 60-70 fighters.

Around the Ranch: 3 in 1 Meters

Those of us who are serious techies have been impressed with the new breed of 3.5-inch three-in-one multimeters that have been popping up on Amazon.

The best of class are 50 MHz (and upward) oscilloscopes, a digital multimeter smart enough to figure capacitor values and the like.  And for the right money, a tracking generator/signal source is included, too.

Just one thing: Many of the signal generators fall just short of my “checkbook threshold.”

See, the most-used ham bands for me are the 160 to 10 meter bands.  1.8 to 30 MHz.  In the units that we like (pricewise) the signal generators stop at 1, 5 or 10 MHz.  Pop $150+ for a better grade of meter and you still ceiling out at 25 MHz.  Close, but no cigar.

If you see one (reasonable) with a bigger screen (7″ for old man eyes) and at least 25 MHz generator, let me know?  Looking at a Hantek that comes close, but for now, the credit card remains holstered…

        • Hey would a Hallicrafters xs99 work for the power supply you need? It still works the tuning strings broke. My dad was a 3rd class engineer, owned a few radio stations in Florida. I always had to do the climbing for a new anttena, whether outside or in the attic. Went to many of ham fest with, miss him a lot. Very intelligent, never graduated H.S.

        • A very kind though…but no, an SX-99 wouldn’t help.

          You might find the “why” interesting.

          A receiver doesn’t use too much power – so typically in thye 65-watt range, which is like 1/2 an amp out of the wall, they will do a very good job at receiving. The transceiver (transmitter and receiver in one) that I’;m working on is a Hallicrafters SR-400 Cyclone. I have an existing PS-150 – several, actually – which puts out a lot more power. I can make one osf those (kinda) work. Involves a few changes to the PS-150 ut even then, 120-watts will be about it. The PS-500 is fairly rare and I have been thinking about the Swan PSU03 which, made by another manufacturer does manage to put out the same voltages needed at the higher current.

          I wouldn’t be in a hurry to get rid of that old SX-99, though. Restring the dial cord and you’d have a fine receiver. Likely, it will need a new power supply filter capacitor (hayseedhamffest.com has kits). I have manuals of just about every Hallicrafters radio ever made and if you need the manual drop me an email to gure@centurylink.net and I can return email it to you. The how to restring the tuning dial is on page 7 and explains how many turns for each of the rotary parts involved. Save the old dial string – use that as a first pass for length. Also, dial cord stringing on this radio is done with both the main tuning and the brandspread tuning fully meshed. If you ever restring a radio dial, this is something newbies can forget and while it might work for a while, the turns overlap and then (insert foul language).

          And prices on eBay are in the $65 (junk) to $450 (working, with shipping) range. Some spit-polish, some DeOxit, check all the tubes and lay new capacitors in it – check the dial-cord for correct operation breakdown and replace the power cord and grommet with a three-wire grounded cord and you could end up with a very nice nighttime DX am band radio.

          except i lived them out as a mortal man in the last 4 years. symbolistacally they match. and after that 4 year journey, im now living in a scaled version of the city of Gods. aka heaven.

    I know that some of the wheat that I bought.. came from Ukraine.. some of the Barley that I bought came from ukraine as well.. Cooking oil.. was one of the products that we all take for granted.. how many use bio diesel as well.. The U.S. is the largest market for vegetable oils, accounting for approximately 80% of the volumetric share in North America. so.. how would it affect us.. in plastics foams food products.. fuel.. a huge increase.. who would replace it.. I don’t even know if there would be time if they legalized marijuana.. ( it is a viable bi product) the US Military has been working on Bio Fuels.. and I forget how many tons of the vegitable oil produced in Ukraine is used by the US military to run vehichles in the attempt to stop their dependence on fossile fuels.. its a shit ton though..

    If you ever use any vegitable oil..I have one of these and one of the electric ones.. the reason… during one of my learning module down times.. Vegitable oil was an issue.. a real issue.. one look back at the last depression as an example.. the release of cooking oils to the public was rationed.. people made recipes using mayonnaise because of it….     Cybersecurity researchers from Infoblox recently reported that an activity cluster known as “Muddling Meerkat” has suddenly woken up. This activity was first spotted in 2019, after which it was dormant.., until recently.

    It seems predominantly designed to manipulate global DNS systems – decentralized network infrastructure that translates human-readable domain names into numeric IP addresses.

    The activity cluster also manipulates mail exchange (MX) records.

  9. Looks like a feeding frenzy for meter/scopes. Did I do that? Oh, my!
    The signal generator was the least important to me because I don’t do receiver sensitivity & alignment checks like Ure. But it does require a damn good generator for doing proper checks. I’m doubting whether that exists in a hand-held meter package. You want frequency up to 30 MHz, but you also NEED a precision calibrated level output for sensitivity checks.
    Yeah, I was spoiled by the lab grade machines we had a several of my stations. Only one tech I knew in all the years was adept at setting up rebroadcast receivers with the gear.

    • I use the trusty Rhode SYM-01 for that – when I need to actually measure -140 dbm on gear I’ve worked on.
      I got an HR-10 heathkit down to -135 MDS a couple of years ago… 80 meters only, of course.

      • Back in the late 70’s early 80’s early in Prechter’s writing days a friend’s dad had a subscription so I read all that Prechter wrote for several years.

        Reading Prechter’s writings at that time, combined with the independent research I had already spent several years doing wrt Mass Movements, mostly political but spilling over into financial, his concept that MOOD LEADS Events and MOOD LEADS Markets resonated with me. It dovetailed exactly with what my own research had indicated.

        Ever since I have been a huge believer that MARKETS LAG, they virtually NEVER LEAD, and also that on the world stage BIG EVENTS LAG they virtually NEVER LEAD.

        The future may not be cast in stone … but it definitely has a generalized route already laid out in front of it long before humans become aware of the direction that the future is taking them, whether by direct means or indirect means.

        I keep harping that everyone needs to read “The Fourth Turning” by Stauss and Howe, and as a follow up book one needs to read Ray Dalio’s book “The Changing World Order” (Ray Dalio founded Bridgewater & Associates, the largest hedge fund out there and used their massive data base and his ability of unlimited funding for research and hiring experts in different fields to provide the data for his book). One book approaches the issue of the future for the US from a social sciences point of view, the other one from a statistical data driven point of view, but BOTH ARRIVE AT THE SAME END POINT! (start with The Fourth Turning … easier to digest)

        Both of those book dovetail precisely into Prechter’s thoughts and beliefs, as I understand them.

        One thing I haven’t seen in the general press about Prechter is that several years ago he started recommending to his subscribers that if they were US citizens that they seriously consider getting a SECOND passport from a different country while they were still readily available and easy to obtain.

        The social sciences Cycles work of Strauss and Howe indicated BIG TROUBLE for river city (the US) for this time frame, from 2022 through about 2030+- (written 1997). The hard data analysis in Ray Dalio’s book indicates BIG TROUBLE for the US in this upcoming time frame of 2025 into 2032 (written 2021).

        Times are a changin …. and there is going to be a LOT of road kill as it changes, both figuratively and literally, if Strauss & Howe, Dalio, and Prechter are correct.

        Wild ride coming up shortly. The US will be a very different place in 8 years than it is today if those four people are even half right. In fact we may no longer exist in our present form of 50 states by the end of those time frames.

    The US debt/GDP deficit ratio in 1942 post Pearl Harbor was 13.88%. This was only exceeded in 1943-45 until President’s Trump’s last year in office in 2020 at 14.71%. In Biden’s first year the ratio was 12.1 % with the last two years at 5.4% and 6.3%. Likewise after March 2020 fed funds interest rates were lowered to near zero with 2.7-3.5 % mortgage rates. As well the Federal Reserve bought an additional March 2020 to June 2022 1.4 trillion dollars of MBS’s. Real estate prices were artificially inflated creating an additional wealth effect among home owners and the owners of rental residentials, which contributed to the inflation of other asset classes. Offsetting QT to combat this inflation in early 2022, was another smaller central bank QE program instituted in March 2023 to prop up the banking system after Silicon Valley Bank et. al. failures.

    The massive US QE program and historic federal deficit spending in 2020 and 2021 (matched by Western and Eastern central banks) prolonged the 8-9 month March 2020 second fractal, which started in October 2020 and ended in Sept 2023 with a duration of 24 months: 5/13/8 months :: x/2.5x/1.6x. The current fractal series from March 2020 is 8-9/24/20 months with the 20 month April 2024 peak occurring in a 5/10/7 month :: x/2x/1.5x fashion.

    The March 2020 to April 2024 STOXX Europe 600 Index XX:SXPP and Nikkei monthly fractal series best exemplifies this 8-9/24/20 monthly fractal growth pattern marked by nadir valuations between the first and second and the second and third fractals.

    A potential 1929-like SPX primary daily decay fractal of 11+/27-29/27-29 days is observable starting 20 March 2024. First fractal: 2/4/5/3 days (11 +days) ending 4 April. Second fractal (starting 4 April 2024)8 (2/4/4 days) //(5/8 of 10-12/7-8) (27-29 days) // and third fractal of 27-29 days. A significant enough drop in global equities could precipitate a fed funds rate cut. A lower high rebound might then extend through the presidential election.

    • Excellent observations – precisely why my consigliere thinks Chis Carolan’s spiral calendar will hold collapse until elections (no one is like to accept the outcome) and Thanksgiving this year will only be a pause in the decline.
      However, when we look at the artificially extended fractal from the 2022 lows in our work, it was esswentially a double top anyway (when infl. adjusted, so we will still see the market reduced to onlyu 18 percent of purchasing power by the end of 2025, but the hip shot will be that we have no idea whether lowering of hyperinflation will be the weapon of choice going into it…

        The Wilshire gained 8.1 percent from its 8 Nov 2021 high: 48,953 to its recent 28 March 2024 high: 52,915. Inflation adjusted the Nov 2021 48,953 represents a higher valuation. If you a selling a stock ETF to buy a house in April 2024(your case Schiller index)at 7.5 % vice 3-3.5 % in 2021, the Nov 2021 valuation was a much higher valuation.
