Seems to us like a good discussion today would revolve around the three flavors of Future that are seen laying out before us.
- First comes the Very-Near Future. Like the rest of today and into the early weekend.
- Intermediate-Future, from 2 or 3 days out and going into the New Year.
- Then most perplexing of all is the Long-Term Future.
Let’s address these one at a time.
Short-Term: Hype & Powell, Santos
Three major Kabuki plays will be appearing on “the fire wall before us, Glaucon.”
- The hype is that the markets have gone on to a New High this week and the time has never been better to buy stocks. Which may – or may not – turn out to be the case. Because in our work, the closing Aggregate Index Thursday notched 39226.92. BUT, the Aggregate High for the year remained the 39,326.00 recorded on July 31st of this year. Looks a hundred points shy.
A good bit of explanation is in order, of course.
First, it helps to remember that as a fresh MBA in the 1990s, quite late in life, it occurred to me that markets lie on a sectoral basis. Which is how you can have an Internet Bubble blow-up the financial planet, then covered up with “terrorism” in 2001 only to be followed a few years later by another – different Bubble (Housing).
I saw this early-on. And the Aggregate was evolved as an equal dollar-weighted measure (a meta-index) in 1999 in order to sort the bullshit off the table. Techs, Housing, and the current A.I. and crypto notions.
So as to be clear, the Dow, S&P, and NASDAQ Composite closed in July at?

At the Big Dinger Thursday?

As you can see, the Dow is “poopin in the tall cotton” but the S&P and NASDAQ have a way to go. Remember, this is also not just a daily closer but a weekly one so whatever happens today will be amusing, at a minimum.
Boolean truth tables rule the future; so, we would not be surprised to see a bit higher in here. We’re making up so much money that’s a really good bet. Except:
2. Now we come to the Powell Problem. Which is being heralded as the super important and where a move to lower rates could be signaled in stories like Fed Chair Jerome Powell Speaks Friday. Here’s What to Expect. – Barron’s.
Reality is a harsh master. We’re thinking a lot of the Thursday short-running was based on hype, and not reality.
Meanwhile, the larger market is not fooled and we’re in position where (in our differential moving averages crossing) work where we could hit the skids today or over the weekend and collapse next week – one of the possible futures out there and not financial advice…
Three strong arguments support an “HFL” (Higher For Longer) regimen at the Fed.
- The price of gold is again over $2,000 and the price of silver is closing in on $26. (We suggested buying silver in 2004 at under $7 an ounce for a long-term play because seems to us government is addicted to making-up money.) Notwithstanding, Gold and silver are screaming inflation still ahead.
- Second is home price data Tuesday. Which part of home prices continued to move up did you miss? This means the back of inflation hasn’t been broken.
- Not only that, but OPECkers failing to raise Oil prices means more gasoline on the fires of equities.
The 900-pound gorilla in the room continues to be the U.S. debt. We are closing in on $34 trillion (not counting inescapable interest, too, so really more like $60-trillion truth be told – though little risk of that…). As the Fed is now buying its own bonds to keep the whole House of Cards from blowing up, no reason for them to be forced into marking things down just yet.
If anything, short-term future would suggest a hawkish Powell. Which could scare the shit out of markets into next week, but as we see it, what would make for a graceful double-top and put the finish to hopes of another year of upside as macro Wave 2, (the rally from 2022 lows from the 2021 highs) would fade.
Our Wave 3 down may be about to get really real.
Final stop in Short-Term Futuring is the (idiot, in our view) Santos standing up in the latest round of Crooks judging Crooks.
Meaningless distraction, sure! Get his sorry-ass into the history books? Yeah, that too. But in terms of useful buying bacon or more jobs being created? Going head-to-head with Asia to bring industry back to the land of she-people? Naw. Not so much.
The most interesting possible outcome is Santos beats the rap and that will tell us he has acquired enough dirt on enough fellow cons (sitting in gress) to keep himself in play.
But that’s the Day’s Worth of Expected Future. It will happen as it will, we may short Powell if rally lunacy continues into the talk. But really, we think the Fed does a good job of taking care of itself. As, if they are, in fact, really buying U.S. bonds to keep the shit-show rolling, can someone explain to my why they would perform ritual self-sacrifice to keep the Musical Chairs going? No, we’re liking the Higher for Longer because they we get a Q1 recession and recovery into the disastrous election cycle next year. Oh boy.
Intermedia Future: Out of Hostages?

I am bending on either a mantle table lamp or a wall sonce.. a wall scone would use less material..
then I plan on showing them how to make hydrogen and use it.. I will use carbon felt as the wick.. another hole in the front top of the candy tin lid.. to jb weld a nut on it for a bolt.. this will be for filling the tin.. through the top of the pipe I will thread a stop bolt.. to adjust it up and down.. from the valve I will have soft copper pipe that will go along the rod that will be bolted to a bean can with a pig tail up into the ventury pipe to the mantle.. on the end of the quarter inch copper pipe I will put a mister nozzle.

… the bean can will go through the top lid of a spagetti sauce jar.. with the bottom cut out.. this will be the globe.. through the top of the bean can will be the ventury tube and an elbow one half inche.. the ventury tube will go out the back of the bean can and down.. the elbow on the t in the jar lid will go down to the mantle.. a hole drilled in the end of the end cap to hold a screen to separate the gas.. one on each side..
then paint all the metal parts.. to be uniform.. on the lid to the candy dish.. I will also put in a shraeder valve with a straw on it to the bottom.. then epoxy the inside of the candy tin and the inside top of the can lid.. slide that over glue it into place.. and paint it.. on top of the bean can going through the spagetti sauce jar.. I will drill holes around the bean can.. as vents.. and on top of it.. attach a small pie tin or get two dog bowls and drill a hole the size of the bean can to slide this over.. the bean can that is totally dependent.. I can get the dog bowls at the dollar store cheap enough .. coat the inside with the reflective tape or just leave it stainless steel.. I will determine what the kids will do once we start on it.. I have two of the toilet paper holders.. so I will make two of the table lamps.. in a wicktorian style lamp but versitile enough to be used either or……

Still a number of blogs and websites are posting the story to illustrate a powerful biblical parable worthy of PATH’s mention.

“Pastor Jeremiah Steepak did a test on his congregation, one that would teach them a lesson they would never forget. The pastor dressed as a homeless man and went to the very same church he ran. As he walked around the church that morning, only three people said hello to him. The pastor asked for people to give him money to buy food, and all of them said, “no.”
When the pastor tried to sit near the front of the church, the ushers told him to sit in the back. Apparently, they believed that God didn’t want to see homeless people, only those with clean clothing.
The pastor says that he said hello to the people in the back, and they only looked at him with cold, icy stares. It happened to be the first day that the new pastor would be preaching at the church and he was introduced to the congregation at the end of the morning announcements.
“We would like to introduce to you Pastor Jeremiah Steepek,” one of the deacons announced.
As the congregation clapped with excitement, people were wondering why the homeless man was walking toward the front of the church. When he got to the front, he gave them the first words of his very first sermon:
“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.
“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
‘The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
When the pastor told his congregation what he’d just experienced, some of them cried. Nearly everyone felt some sense of shame for the way they treated the homeless man who asked for money for food.
He then said, “Today I see a gathering of people, not a church of Jesus Christ. The world has enough people, but not enough disciples. When will YOU decide to become disciples?”

Interesting. I haven’t read it fully, word for word, but have scanned through it several times looking for references to the USA and it appears that he doesn’t believe there will be enough of the USA left to be worth writing about.
All I could find was a couple of references to this country’s destruction.
I believe I saw a reference to 180mm dead after the first wave and of that 62mm dead from the New Madrid flood…..

My Aggregate – My “Carnac – The Magnificent” Index., is hundreds of points below the July High. I don’t see it, the market, going above it. What I do ‘see’, is what appears to be a very nice double top forming. Sprinkle “Carnac – The Magnificent Index” with a little Fibonacci pixie dust and the down side appears to be just a few days away.
(We suggested buying silver in 2004 at under $7 an ounce for a long-term play because seems to us government is addicted to making-up money.)
Now if you had bought HAMBURGER.. or BREAD… you would be even further ahead on the money… in 2007.. I was paying 1.29 per pound.. I went into Sams club.. yesterday.. going to get a chub to retort can.. the cost for the same hamburger.. ( well not the same but the same percentage of fat to meat) was 5.99 Now that is in the wastelands… in metro america I have heard that it is three times that amount.. Bread all day long was .65 a loaf.. today the cheap loaf now is three dollars.. the one that has some wheat in it. is almost double that..
the other issue with gold and silver. is how many people collect it in your area.. around the wastelands.. there are only what three.. and they buy it at wholesale cost.. URE buying it at retail.. in a SHTF scenario.. which would be more important.. take Africa.. offer someone a tanker of clean water and a truckload of food.. or a pile of heavy gold or silver and see which one they will take especially those that have to walk fifty miles to get anything at all..
You know I’ve wondered about PM use after the balloon. Certainly will matter where and when you are who takes what for what. Who was the King, Midas…who couldn’t use his Au? might end up 1:1 with canned sardines…
Exaclty RM…I had a gold coin or two back in the seventies.. then medical bills needed the cold hard cash that is spendable.. I went to sell it.. but wholesale was less than what I paid for it.. no one wanted it.. great if you have everyone wanting it.. ask anyone that sees people in poorer countries that have to hike fifty miles for a drink of water.. water and food.. held valuable.. in the gold rush days.. a glass of water was three ounces of gold..
try to spend a bit coin at a restaurant.. if you see it as valuable.. then it is.. what has held value throughout all the years is food.. grain.. water alcohol.. booze.. I make wine.. and beer.. I am getting better each batch I make to.. the thing is.. people still enjoy their guilty pleasures that give them a quality of life.. those will always have value..
SEX.. and a Steak in the gold rush days.. was worth way more than gold.. it depends on what they value.. the aztec’s and Mayan didn’t value gold.. but when the spaniards came and seen the gold that was what they wanted.. what the Aztec’s valued was … CORN…. torked them off a little bit.. once held as heros and returning gods.. they lusted after the golden decorations so much that they destroyed much of the country seeking their riches.. so
since the Spanish conquistadors had the unquenchable thirst for gold from The Americas. That In the 16th Century, returning conquistadors horrified Spain with reports of their captured companions being tied up and having molten gold poured down their throats with the words “Eat, eat gold, Christian!” being displayed.

A couple of days ago a freighter got stuck in the Detroit River. Back in June of 2020, “The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, recently awarded contracts for maintenance dredging of the Detroit River, Saginaw River and St. Clair River all in Michigan.”
Perhaps the river wasn’t dredged since freighters are getting stuck. Like the train systems the freighter systems are openly ripping us off.

Its like Ronnie on television explaining that by taking the money set aside for Social Security that the USA would always respect the workers and elderly.. LOL LOL Now you hear that people on social security are the ones taking the vital resources of the hard working americans.. no it is the people we hire to represent us and all our needless wars.. for wars we have borrowed and spent more money on other countries than our own.. so our infrastructure is failing.. our people are being forced to rely on social programs that we meant for the absolute destitute as a way to be rescued.. the good samaritan laws..
One lecture I give the kids.. is to invest the same amount that is taken out of the paycheck for Social security and invest it in Savings bonds.. My father tried to tell me that.. by doing that and it doubling every seven years.. I would have had between fifty and a hundred million dollars in a retirement nest egg.. so those that invested in their companies retirement funds.. and those on Social security.. are not stealing the money.. their investment was MissManaged by management… squandered away.. which is what sloe joe is doing now.. by the hundreds of billions of dollars.. and even though Ronnie thought that the USA would take care of its elderly .. there will come a day when they won’t be able to.. the day the country goes bankrupt.. all debts pushed away all services will cease to exist.. you cannot keep spending what you don’t have.. at some point you get to the situation like we are presently in.. where the interest will start doubling.. the interest on our debt doubled and is due to double again soon.. and we are borrowing money from china and other countries to fund these horrible wars.. this isn’t good.. zimbabwe here we come.. I have seen the cost of groceries go up over fifty percent.. our taxes on our home doubled this year.. the increases are unsustainable.. whether we like what is coming or not.. huge changes are going to be happening.. soon

My TSA stupid experience: Before my trip I used the laundromat cash machine for $10.00 of quarters to wash one load of clothes.
At PDX the TSA agent said he needed to inspect my suspicious purse. What was the problem? 34 quarters. He thoroughly inspected both sides of every quarter while demanding to know why so many. Who knew having lots of quarters would be trouble.
Only exercise I get now days is shaking my head in disbelief of what is going on in the world.
I carry a silver 1 oz eagle with my change in a belt-pack. Last time it went thru the TSA scanner… one of the newer color-display models… every agent got excited and stopped me as I tried to collect it. “Excuse me sir, there is something round showing up as bright green in your pack that we need to inspect.” I showed them the silver eagle that they had to feel and compare size to the image, before they finally shrugged and let me go. Three agents had their noses in that search. Seems that the scanner is sensitive to silver, and it might have been registering as an explosive component chemistry.

I carry a 1923 silver dollar – the year Weimar blew up. Dad carried a dollar, too, but I carry it in my other pocket away from the harder metal slugs. It still being worn down like crazy and will be a “smoothy” before too long. My brother has our Dad’s dollar he carried and it’s almost unrecognizable as he carried it in his change pocket.
