ABM = A Boring Monday.  But it’s a four-day workweek for some…

This is one of those mornings when the active thinker, cursed with the inquisitive mind, hates writing.  There’s just not much going on.  Yet. The “Schedule” is the news.

The Bigger War Game

The Ukraine war has been reduced to body count claims (19,500) and claims that the war will spillover, next, to Transnistria.

For those not paying attention, the Plan of Battle is become – at least to us – a lot more obvious now:  We are not able to dismiss the (Nostradamus) notion of the Russians planning to come across the whole lower western shoreline of the Black Sea and tie-up with Turkey.

Assume for a moment, if you will, that Vlad Putin is not a mad man, and you can see a tough slog of a ground war over summer but leading to a very dark and cold winter ahead for Europe over 2022-23.

Assuming you know the importance of 18 February 1952 (spoiler:  Turkey joined NATO), you can see the Russian interest in whatever countries sit on logical Leviathan gas field pipelines to Europe.

There is a path for Russia to isolate Israeli gas fields by pressing west (after Transnitria) into first Romania and then on to Yugoslavia.  This would leave Greece and Turkey “islanded” logistically. and would leave Russia attempting to control European gas with two-front line.

On one side, Hungary – which is the how and why of elections there being key, specifically Orban’s election.  Hungary is a recent post-Soviet addition to NATO (12 March 1999) but, with a sympathetic ear perhaps in Orban, a massive NATO press from the northwest would be a reduced risk.

The likely strategy of Putin would be to use Hungary to, in effect, expand “the northwest front” more into NATO’s core, while remembering that Turkey and Greece have been playing maritime brinksmanship since at least 2018.

Remember the movie Never-ending Story?  This one could drag on for years to come.  All part of our “thought framework” of the Manufacturer’s Resource Wars.  This would be a 30–to – 60-year window during which many of the world’s leaders wake up to the reality of too many people and not enough resources to go around.

Food shortages – which may come here as we figure, as early as  Q3 (or earlier) onset of a “hard recession” (which is why B of A warns of inflation shock). Although they’re outlook is for an 11 percent decline, we’re thinking that’s only have right; double it and that’s how bad it could be.

Well, EXCEPT for the fact that the US is still hamstrung by the problems of the pernicious trade balance vis China and Asia, so a 22 percent nominal decline with a counter-weighting 12 percent inflation and yeah, that’s why B of A runs a bank, and I don’t.

Anymore, watching the news flow (*Big Picture) is seriously decoupling from news flow (*Hysterical Picture).

The big chessboard pieces are still Russia and China plus assorted megalomaniacs of the New World Order who want to rule because it makes theft easier.  China is building nukes with a purpose.

A topic we’ll jump in deeper on Wednesday in our Peoplenomics column where the focus is “The Rise of Non-Productive Industry.”

In the meantime, Russia, tired have having its jets shot down, is going after the anti-aircraft missile sites as we read in Russia says it struck S-300 systems given to Ukraine by EU state | Russia- Al Jazeera.  Which means, yes, there is a quicker escalation path possible than the slow track above if NATO state hardware on loan won’t be coming back in one piece.

Wildland fire hotshots might call this a “fuel jackpot.”

Non-Productive Growth

The role of social media – as a massive swindle of working people – is still not clear to most.  But a nod in the direction of Elon Musk – usually the smartest guy in the room – because he’s come down with buyer’s remorse.

“Elon Musk decides not to join Twitter board, says CEO Parag Agrawal (cnbc.com).”  The further amplification of our long-held view (that social is eminently wasteful and right up with the Crypto con) is seen in Researchers: Nearly Half Of Accounts Tweeting About Coronavirus Are Likely Bots -NPR.

To simplify – if the coffee hasn’t kicked-in yet –  You live in a world full of bullshitters-turned-influencers who are scamming everyone with bots and selling public opinion to the highest bidders.  Wouldn’t you love to see all the social media spending by Big Pharma on Covid-related issues?

Point here is that Musk really is smart and might just be able to smell quicksand when he nears it:  Twitter stakeholder Elon Musk tweets ‘Is Twitter dying?’ (france24.com).

We figure Social Media – which only has consumer habit change as a measurable output in business terms – is wildly over-hyped and over-priced.  But, then so were tulips in the mid 1630s.  Or in the South Seas Company bubble. Or in…(had enough?)  What is back down to $41,236 at click time, hmm?

Getting on the Schedule

“Where is the size-up for the week, Ure?”

Just warming to that.  It’s complicated and I’m old, so easy there Knight Rider.

This is an Options week.  Index options usually expire Thursday, equities Friday.  But because Thursday is Maundy Thursday (not to be confused with Monday when foot washing is not a big deal) options expire on Thursday this week. Short session. We wonder if nail joints will have long lines Thursday?

Adventure Begins Tomorrow

With only a couple of bond auctions, some Vitamin B caps for the hangover and a side of NoDoz, today shapes up as a (what’s the word?) monkey turd.

Tomorrow, though, not only is the National Federation of Independent Business due out with a sentiment reading early, but in true Karnak fashion, the price action today may be an indicator of tomorrow’s coming CPI data.

In other words, if you see the market rally like mad this afternoon, it could signal Buy the Rumor, Sell the News.  Setting the stage for a real suck-o report.  If the market collapses today, however, we’ll be wondering if its Sell the Rumor, Buy the News?  If it is, then a good prices report may be ahead.

Treasury Statement tomorrow afternoon which is a sure-fire cure for insomnia if you read the whole thing.

Wednesday (*after an all-nighter being on Coast) we get Producer Prices; generally, an indicator of how inflation is doing back up the supply lines a ways.

Thursday’s pick is Retail Sales along with Export Prices and new U.I. filings.  Plus, the market closes early – Maundy.  A good day to get the car washed, too?

Good Friday is not a federal holiday.  So with markets closed, the Fed’s Industrial Production and Utilization and the NY Fed’s Empire State Manufacturing reports Friday can be just about anything.

There.  Feel like the world will be safe for another week?

Around the Ranch

A little on the dry side here in East Texas.  For the year to date, Tyler Texas Weather is showing us about an inch and three-quarters behind last year.

Go have a click on the National Drought Monitor map.  Which today looks like more than half of the continental US is rain deficient.

Then remember the old saying:  “What turns a Recession into a Depression is a Drought.”

Have you taken our mantra since last fall to heart and planted anything to eat, yet?

I recently did a subscriber piece on how there are some things – non-monetary investments – that make a lot more sense than financial fictions.

When I look at the drought monitor, the drooler-in-chief repealing Title 42, (see NYT reporter: Dem backlash to Title 42 repeal ‘shows anxiety’ of what migrant influx would mean ‘politically’) and looking at the ripples of inflation growing ever-higher in the grocery stores, I can’t help but wonder if “smart” phones and all their computational horsepower has sucked the brains right out of humans.

An evolving data set argues the case.  We’re watching – appalled. Stay tuned.

    I’m not sure the Nato countries giving Soviet S300’s to Ukraine expect to get them back. I thought a rich uncle had the donor Nato peeps lined up for new USA Patriot systems backfill. Would they be at a good price or courtesy of US taxpayers?

  2. ENVIRONMENTAL CLIMATE CHANGE and the MARXISTS
    Our government organizations are now infiltrated with Communists, Marxists, and Radical Green Environmentalists. They all have Marxist agendas seeking the destruction of America anyway possible. They held up the Alaska pipeline for many years because they said the pipeline would have melted the permafrost. It took an Act of Congress and subsequent law-43 USC Ch. 34 to get the pipeline out of radical hands and started. 800 miles of pipeline by 54-300 feet of right-of-way, depending upon ownership, out of 663,268 square miles in Alaska. The bottom line is that a lot of the Alaska pipeline is now above ground where it can be easily bombed or blown up by saboteurs.

    And now the SEC is entering the game with Climate Related Disclosures. SEC has proposed that every publicly traded company must disclose its contribution to greenhouse gas (GHG), not only its own emissions, but “Scope 3” emissions by its customers. The disclosures will be costly, burdensome, and foster endless litigation by environmentalists and activists.

    Examples: Banks report how their lending and banking services facilitate GHG emissions globally. Exxon would report its own emissions, its refineries, tankers transporting oil and LNG, and emissions by 2-3 billion consumers of Exxon products worldwide. SEC admits the Scope 3 emissions are not defined! Even service companies not engaged in manufacturing would recite climate change prose or virtue-signaling, e.g., Netflix would disclose how its streaming service relates to greenhouse emissions. More rules that don’t add to the economy, just bureaucratic red tape to strangle business. Marxist agendas like the Alaska pipeline to delay and further strangle our economy.

    Some of the reasons this proposal is awful: SEC’s mandate is to protect consumers and fair markets (not the environment), SEC lacks environmental expertise, the rule is costly and disadvantages American companies, 10K annual reports are already unreadable and this makes them more unreadable, Russia & China would never impose onerous rules on their own companies, environmental matters are not SEC’s mission.

    And guess who the Acting Director of the Division of Enforcement for the SEC is? Melissa Hodgman! Does it ring a bell who this woman is that was appointed by Biden? Peter Strzok’s wife! A payoff for him from the O’Bidens since he got fired? The same crooked FBI Peter Strzok that was deeply involved in the phony FBI Crossfire Hurricane attempt to get Trump out of office while Strzok was telling his mistress Lisa Page, the FBI Counsel, that they would get Trump. Strzok and Page…the people that knew better than a majority of the American people. Arrogant psychopathic Crooks in the halls of Justice.

    And another Federal Agency the FERC has come up with– Consideration of Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Natural Gas Infrastructure Project Reviews FERC plans to reject permit applications by interstate pipelines and LNG plants by adding a new third test. FERC will evaluate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions indirectly attributed to a project, the “downstream emissions” by ultimate consumers of gas, also known as “Scope 3” emissions. Senator Joe Manchin castigated FERC in a hearing, so FERC claimed its February 2022 policy change was merely a draft, and now seeks public comment, public comment period ends 4/25/22. FERC already rejects and endlessly nitpicks pipeline and LNG terminal applications citing “environmental impact” pursuant to (NEPA) National Environmental Protection Act, and FERC encourages environmentalist lawsuits against oil & gas infrastructure.

    Biden and the puppeteers, along with the U.N. are going full speed ahead on Carbon Credits and Carbon Taxes. A Coup de Grace for America. They proposed a minimum 15% Corporate Tax at the G7 for all global corporations.     that is funny…I was in the gas station the other day and one of the managers was telling me.. we have to find out why there is such a decline in sales..
    I said.. about twenty to thirty percent.. Yes how did you know we had lost that much in sales.. everyone is..How do you figure..
    well groceries are up overall about fifteen percent and better.. starting wages are up but not the wages of those employed already.. got the cable bill that I worked so hard to get it down.. and it is up twenty seven percent this month.. they had to raise rates.. I will have to reduce..
    Utilities are up.. fuel for transportation is up.. overall we are already above that 22 percent hike with inflation.. similar to the covid shut downs.. brick and morter realized it isn’t the guy living in the million dollar home that is keeping them afloat.. it is the guy making ten to twenty dollars an hour.. the burger flipper the clerk that says would you like fries.. that make them their money..     The time to fix it in my opinion was when Carter was in office.. he had proposed an equalized tax..       –Where is the NATO ‘no fly’ zone?
      –Where are ‘NATO’ troops – if they are so brazen, why not invade?
      –Why are the weapons being delivered either light infantry weapons or old soviet hardware?
      –Where is the large ‘Ukrainian’ offensive?
      –Is there a large Ukrainian force pushing into Russia? Why not?
