Out There Doing It…

Thanks to Iridium, just got an update that many readers (esp. Egor and other sailors – like us) will like reading:

George,
We’re ten days out of French Polynesia heading for Fiji. Three aboard, started in rough seas and smoothed to heavenly transit. Full moon, medium trade winds, steady seven to eight knots, averaging 150nm a day. There is a decent watch schedule but mostly we get sleep when it feels right by mutual agreement. Me and the missus are elders, (79 and 76) so managing enough rest is important, and our crew/friend is only 43 so he fills the gaps when necessary and is happy to do it.
Four days out we caught a big wahoo, maybe twenty pounds, butchered it and ate like kings for three days. Even managed to dry some for night watch snacks later. Have only seen one other boat, a small cat named COUNTRY ROAD. We passed close enough to use VHF and make sure no crashing into would happen. Had to return a big barracuda to the sea as they are poisonous down here.
Still have three or four days left, fresh food is holding up good, and we have plenty of everything.
Stiks

Fair winds and following seas, and let us know when the hook’s down and the rum open…

  1. You need an SX-101 to go with the 32! Did you get the pics I sent from the hamfest?

$75 & $175 both working, the latter pristine. I’m sure I couldn’t lift it, it is gigantic about the heaviest Hallicrafters RX.

  2. George : thx for relaying the Stiks update, nice especially to read “… Four days out we caught a big wahoo, maybe twenty pounds …” as fresh fish in transit is a lovely way to eat. I catch a mid-sized tuna almost every charter and … get on a lunch hook asap every time to feast while fresh. The Cudas have Ciguatera, not out of ordinary throughout Caribbean (and tropics) but magnified in high end predators. Not safe to eat unless small?

We caught a 3+foot Barracuda once and my entire crew is acting like we hadn’t dined for a week. Let’s eat it. I’m hauling it up towards topsides looking into the jawws of H*** (Heck +). No way unless we kill it first.

Razor teeth parted the 50 lb test. I was glad …

  3. Glad to know stiks survived the tsunami! Wahoo! Here it goes by the Japanese name ‘Ono’… which means ‘delicious’. My favorite pick from the village ‘Fish & Chips’ place up the road.
