Past global wars have never to such an extend, relied on the continued construction and operation of foreign assets.  As tensions continue to increase worldwide, but most noticeably in Ukraine and Taiwan, we can appreciate the changing role of “foreign assets.”

Today, we use our thought frameworks to look ahead to the coming few months for clues as to how life will evolved.

Like the classic “good news/bad news” jokes, we do have some “good news” (spoiler: No nuclear war) but some bad news; massive shortages of certain goods and a possible “line stop” on advances in technology.

Toss in our economic press releases of the day coupled with our ChartPack, and it’s another glorious spring day.

  3. Commercial Real Estate Collapse … and it’s spill over to the mid size and smaller banks causing MOST of them TO FAIL (without Federal Government Help)

    I made a post last week about the collapse that is occuring in the Commercial Real Estate realm and in the past few days a number of articles have appeared FINALLY reporting the obvious to those who don’t usually follow the goings on in that field.

    Virtually ALL LARGE commercieal properties are kept in debt up to their eyeballs FOREVER. Unlike with everyday real estate loans large commericial real estate loans are virtually NEVER PAID DOWN or PAID OFF, except when sold or refianced.

    In addition most large commericial real estate loans are 5 year or 7 year balloon payment loans, often time “interest only” loans, NOT 20 or 30 year self amortizing loans like most people take out when they buy a house or a small business building.

    This means that there is little “reserve” in the kitty wrt large commercial building loands for when things go south (say occupancy rates) … and virtually no reserve in the kitty when it comes time to refinance, as they ALL must do, if they face increased interest rates. (ie: NOW!)

    The IMPORTANCE of the collapse that is occuring is that it will most likely take down a majority of the banks in the mid to small size range, much like what happened with the S&L crisis in 1989-1992 which basically DESTROYED the Savings and Loans in the US AND also destroyed mid size banks across the US.

    In that 1989-1992 collapse every single banking company in Texas collapsed, ditto Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, in Florida ALL the big and mid size ones collapsed, and the list goes on and on. What is now going on is really a clone of that 1989-1991 collapse, NOT the 2006-2008 real estate collapse which was heavily single family home centered NOT commericial real estate centered though problems in the one area do eventually spill over to the other area.

    If interested as to why YOUR small or mid size bank WILL most likely fail here ere are some of article cites that talk about how the Commercial Real Estate Office Building collapse is now building up steam, this is on top of the massive amount of excess retail space that is now riddled with vacancies across our great land.Of the three legs of the Commercial Real Estate stool, office buildings /retail buildings /muulti family complexes multi family is the only stool leg that is not yet in serious difficulties but even in that arena some of those properties are now being given back to their lenders, though the real damage in that sector shouldn’t start to show up until the actual recession hits later this year.

    When your multi million dollar property was paying $300,000/mo in interest on an “interest only” loan and that suddenly jumps to $800,000/mo because you had to refinance (balloon loan) at today’s higher rates AND at the same time your building occupancy rates AND the rate you can rent your space for is going down … well the property is in trouble! Which becomes the bank being in trouble TOO!

    Well worth a read once you understand that this dynamic is most likely going to cause the collapse of virtually all mid size and smaller banks in the US unless the Fed and Congress step in … and if they do, well INFLATION will become rather dramatic.

    (OH … and there are now talk that Blackstone, the largest commercial property owner in the US with about $700-$800 billion in properties, may actually be forced into bankruptcy down the road if things don’t stabilize … if you own any REITS you may want to do your own analysis of the real estate market and it’s 3 to 5 year future TODAY)

    • An excellent analysis S2. It is the same here in Canada except we don’t have the number of small banks you do. If this starts to shake the Big 5 here, we could have a very bad problem.

      The commercial real estate vacancies in major cities here has been accelerating. Federal employees are currently on strike and demanding 2 days a week work from home. This won’t help commercial real estate nor general productivity. They don’t work very hard when they are in the office. Work at home will be a vacation.

      A ticking time bomb.

    People have long tried to have a store of wealth should proverbial spam hit the fan. Cash, including folding money and coins / commodities (consumable) and metals and now … crypto.

    I have a few, or several, metallic paperweights and have sometimes been asked why? Worst case: 1 guy has a loaf of bread and 3 buyers step up. 1 has a credit card, 1 has cash, 1 has a silver ounce. Yes, that’s an expensive loaf of rye but … it’s my thought the metallic man leaves with the loaf.

    I don’t mean to berate crypto enthusiasts and understand the tech quite well but have questions. So, the grid goes down. How do you use your crypto? Power remains up but the web goes offline. How do you use your crypto? You have to bail and are away from secure location. How do you use your crypto?

    Ole fashioned? Sure. I just don’t think crypto is all it’s stacked up to be. It’s not secure. It’s not easily transferable under difficult situations and it’s not a stable repository of wealth. Yes other alts can be volatile but $60k to <$20k? It's a 1999 tech stock.

        Meteoric rise does not suggest stability. The very nature of crypto is speculative. That includes the bigs like BTC and ETH (of which the latter seems most functional). So, it’s a gogo meme stock IMO. You likely? You do you.

      As long as everything works, so do cryptos. Their big weakness, is a crypto REQUIRES that a source computer, a network, and an end computer all work, and the electrical power which supports each is present.

      Are cryptos a good idea? Sure, iff you’re an optimist. If you are a realist, you can see the six links in that chain from my previous paragraph. Notice, I didn’t mention theft or data corruption? Any means of exchange is subject to theft. However, that corruption thing is something of which E-Transfers are singularly susceptible (and something to which credit card purchases and ATM transfers are as vulnerable as cryptos.) BTW the way the “corruption” works is: you can get a virus, and it screws with your computer until the next time you drop a USB virus recovery drive into the slot, then your ‘puter is fine again and your BTC is back.

      That’s lame.

      The REAL virus attack is one that would be targeted at the Internet’s backbone routers. Blockchain would simply not pass GO — EVER!

      It doesn’t take an EMP to make cryptos go away, and it is their lack of robustness (multiple potential points of failure) which plays a cautionary tune to people like me. I’m not against playing the crypto field as a series of short-term instruments — hell, I have a kid who does. I’m against depending on them as a replacement for hard assets. They simply don’t measure up…

        Years ago.. the above scenario happened.. it was like in 80 or 81.. I had taken some money and made a WIRE.. transfer to pay a bill… in that moment.. there was a freak storm.. in another part of the country.. the receiving party did not get the money … I was freaking out.. I didn’t have anymore money to put towards it.. and it was EVERYTHING I HAD.. once it left the bank that did the wire transfer.. it was gone….as if it didn’t ever exist..
        It was over a month before the money was found.. in the meantime I had to juggle like hell to survive for the month.. digital currency.. is nothing more than that.. except BC is in a hidden state.. no one knows who has it.. just like the digital wire transfer I made.. they didn’t have a clue and a power glitch made it vanish.. with bit coin its the same thing.. a clouded money transfer system designed for people dealing on the Dark web..

    • Despite the media uniformly emphasizing this as a “trial,” it is not a trial, but an administrative hearing. The Media use this term because it implies a criminal proceeding and listeners don’t know any better. This is a lawsuit, not a criminal proceeding. The difference (remember O.J.) is a criminal trial requires proof via “a preponderance of evidence” where a lawsuit only requires the slimmest of a majority of the evidence. It is an extortion play, made referring to a time in Trump’s life when he was an international playboy, dating a bevy of jet-set beauty queens and models. Carroll is trying to “Herman Cain” him and Reid Hoffman, one of the LinkedIn founders, is supplying her funding.     I agree with a lot of what you propose in this section. I do think that there will be a lot of over-flow in some of those areas.
    My immediate question is: Just how stupid will Biden get? If his handlers decide that retaliation is the path to take against China for their aggression.., will he be dumb enough to order trade sanctions against China ? [What else does he have?] He will have to do something.., make a statement somehow.., if he chooses sanctions – won’t China immediately respond with trade sanctions of their own? Thus, dividing the entire world into two camps ?
    Can China weather a ‘trade war’ better than the U.S. ? Since we are now, nothing more than a consumer economy – what happens when a lot of those regular consumables just disappear?
    There may not be “high-speed lead exchanged” between China and the U.S. .., but the economic salvo’s could be devastating – to both parties.

      The Chinese whom Chaing brought with him when he fled the mainland are ethnic Chinese. The native Formosans are more-closely ethnically-related to the Australian Aborigines than they are the Han (or any other Chinese sub-ethnicity) and are an ancient people. Xi couldn’t care less about any of them. He DOES care about the Taiwanese infrastructure and manufacturing base though, and were an invasion to occur, would probably try to keep, especially the chip foundries, intact.

      With that said, he has undoubtedly read Sun Tzu and is much more likely to take Sun’s treatise as a lesson, rather than a novel, [apparently] like most Western “military minds.” If he can “acquire” Taiwan by threats alone, he most-assuredly will.     Taiwan will “request” Reunification. Not one shot will be fired.

    It may be blackmail — something like international super-bullying; but the effect will be the same. I think all parties believe America would NOT [reliably] come to Taiwan’s assistance. It will come to a crisis, and a Horrible Moment Of Choice. AND, a terrible choice will be made. Make a “Hong Kong” style accommodation to avoid utter destruction. Kick the can, and hope to think of something brilliant later.

    Amphibious landing invasions are too slow and impractical now-a-days. Sudden assault of a major airport [think: paratroops], followed by securing of as much territory surrounding as necessary [not that much] to prevent easy manpad shootdowns of aircraft in the approach and departure corridors, and you have a “beachhead” to pour in troops and supplies.

    All one need do is show the detailed and specific plan, two hours out, to the target country, and THEY choose if it’s to be the easy way or the hard way.

    “Check” [and probably “mate”[ in two hours. Uncle Sam wouldn’t have time to get his pants on [command confusion and disorder] before it would be irrelevant.     You paid to be surveilled — belled like a cat. So, it may appear a wise move to Taiwan to seek a bloodless compromise and an accommodation rather than get blown to hell while America vacillates.

    Today’s strings-attached debt ceiling bill should provide sufficient anarchy and market angst to linearly explain – after the Wilshire’s March 2020 x/2x/2x :: 33/66/66 week lower high valuation peak – its subsequent 2 week nonlinear historical drop, taking global equity composites with it. The QE debt driven 8 November 2021 peak valuation for the Wilshire was a 31/62-63/62 month :: x/2x/2x valuation growth series from the March 2009 low.

    The nonlinear drop appears to be following a x/2x(2.5x’)/1.5-1.6x’ growth and decay fractal series starting on 13 March 2023 of 9/20(ideal base 8)/5 of 13 days. From the second fractal 18 April 2023 18 day 2x high of this series, a decay series of 3/5 of 7/7 days is possible.

    Just a quick note on your post. Phase I, I see Limited Nuclear War, then three-years and seven-months of the False Peace. Phase II, I think, will be a Major Nuclear War. But Russia’s nuclear doctrine is Escalate to Deescalate, so it may be hard to judge limited from major.

    fondue fries
    1 tablespoon butter
    1 tablespoon flour
    1/8 teaspoon salt
    3/4 cup of milk
    1/2 to 3/4 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
    4 pieces applewood smoked bacon, cooked and crumbled
    16 ounces frozen french fries
    In a small saucepan over medium heat melt 1 tablespoon butter, when the butter is melted add flour. Stir in flour and cook for approximately 1 minute or until the flour begins to become fragrant like cooked pie crust.
    Add in salt. Add half of the milk in and stir until the mixture thickens, then add in remaining milk.
    Stir until the sauce is thick, add shredded cheese, stir until all of the cheese melts. You can thin down the sauce with additional milk if desired.
    Cook fries according to package directions. Top with cheese sauce and crumbled bacon.

      tomahawk iron works forge wasn’t on there.. they do make stuff from iron ore here .. I have had them make parts for me.. I would make a model for them and they would cast it..
      some of them I know buy the materials they use to produce the products from outside the USA.. they once were made in the USA.. but now.. they buy the parts someplace else..

          You say that, but there are some seriously pissed Michiganders because (Governor) Gretchen Whitmer has promised $185mln of their tax dollars to build a battery factory in Big Rapids.

          Big Rapids is a “class D city” (Pop. maybe 9000) which barely shows up on maps, about half-way between Grand Rapids and Cadillac (Cadillac Coffee in Michigan Cherry, mixed with their Smoky Hazelnut and Medium Roast is to die for — I drink some whenever I’m on the road in Michigan/Indiana/Ohio and stop at a cstore which sells it…) or 90 miles south of Traverse City on US-131. There’s virtually nothing in Big Rapids but Ferris State University, although I’ve twice stopped at the Sunoco station and once at Menards. Ferris State is an NCAA Division II or Division III college, famous for creating top-flight football coaches (and nothing else, of which I’m aware.) The town is quaint, but it’s also located in the middle of nowhere. There’s absolutely no reason to build a battery plant there, unless someone wants to pollute the Muskegon(?) River…

        • And they have every right to be angry. Dim gov giving out their tax money to a communist organization? Don’t blame them one bit – and I didn’t say who was the recipient of that money did I? The major portion of all hand-outs like that always go to those that will further their causes. And, as you hinted, making the place unlivable by polluting a river could be a long-term goal. Personally I’m rooting for a CME to take it all down.

Frankly, I’m more concerned with the millions of acres of (mostly) farmland in CONUS that the CCP has purchased recently (mostly through shell companies), and what they intend to do with it — and the thousands of Chinese Nationals who’ve been inundating our Southern border over the past few months…

          the muffins my grandson loves.. is made by a chinese company.. well one owned by china.. the luncheon meat I make my sandwhich out of.. from a company .. your thanksgiving dinner .. from what I could tell was it all started when a container ship refused to off load until they were paid in gold.. then congress passed a few bills.. and they off loaded for fiat money.. and they started to buy up companies..
          we need a law saying that it is illegal to corrupt politicians with money.. maybe make one so that all the billions that are donated to them has to go to the states they work for.. to be distributed by the states in programs that they have going.. and any vacations etc.. are auctioned off to citizens of the states where the donations were meant to go to.. things would change in a hurry and I would be shocked to find a bag full of money on my doorstep.. kind of like a lottery

          Mine are not.

          I don’t buy Eckrich, or Emge, or Smithfield, or Nathan’s, or a bunch of other brands of meats. I had to buy 41¢/lb turkey last fall, instead of the 39¢ turkey I’d bought two years ago, which I put down to inflation, but it was all-American. I’m kind of in a good spot, because I have two old-fashioned butcher shops within ~5 miles of me, and two Amish butcher shops within about 30 miles. I also have my own slicer and grinder.

          We CAN avoid sending money to China. It just takes work…
