I almost didn’t write a column this morning. There was just so much great info in the Comments section from Wednesday. Click over here and scroll down to the long piece from Ray (H) who did a dandy “more to think about” on our subscriber “Get Home Plan” on Peoplenomics yesterday.
Even more savory are the latest remarks from G.A. Stewart on the larger framework around what’s afoot in the world now. We trust you have read Stu’s “Nostradamus and his Dates” at least twice?
And some damn-fine remarks on how much vehicle it takes to drag the weight a “bug-out” trailer, from Ray. And that opens the window into this morning.
Prepping, dear reader is back in style. Not all over the mainstream yet. But we expect it within a month – maybe two – as it dawns on more and more folks that the Future of walking apes may be a little too bright, if you follow my drift.
Trajectory Think
Ever go bird or small game hunting? There is an artform all of us “gun competent” people have that just falls out of the sport/skill of shooting. Anyone can get a gun vice, clamp it to a shooting table, and zero it at 100-yards. When the targets move, though, then you need muscle memory, knowledge of how to anticipate. And a little study of “Kentucky Windage” to put dinner on the table.
In the more local context, we also work “trajectory problems” all over Life. “What are the odds (so and so) will call me back?” “Will that new product of the competitor beat our research team’s newest and greatest whizzy?” And around here “Where do the numbers tell us the Future is going?
We have to wait a week for some “real data” – because CPI and Retail Sales will be along. In the meantime, however, we can offer some conceptual grounding on trajectory-think.
The Stock Market is Nuts
Let’s see how the present rally (possibly ending today) has played out recently.
From the market lows in 2023, the market went from here (using our Aggregate Index) 10/27/2023 35,159.32 to at yesterday’s close of 5/8/2024
44,186.02. However, in our study of things, this is not where the (so far) all-time high was. That came (so far) on 3/21/2024 44,660.42.
Trajectory-Think instructs us to apply the wetware. From October to the March high, the market went up about 27 percent. It did so in less than six months. If the market held this kind of growth, its one-year rate of increase would be up around 61 percent, not the 54 percent you might guess at. That’s because of compounding.
Trajectory-Think says “Hmm…is there any business around which is “growing the business” by 61 percent annual rates?” Sure as hell isn’t Boeing, is it? Nor is it Apple which is doing a big stock buy-back. Since the bloom is coming off EVs, probably not going to be Tesla, either.
There is also a long-term correlation between standards of living and markets. Do we all have a ton of new disposable income? At the 50-percent more level? No?
To says we are likely in a hyperinflationary (short-term) blow-off topping process is the height of understatement.
The Consumer Trajectory is Different
The Federal Reserve Consumer Debt numbers came out this week. They call ’em “credit” numbers because banks are the “creditors” and it’s all about them. Around here, it’s about us and that means Debtors.
What we see under “revolving debt” (which is bankster for “credit card and short-term borrowings) is that Q1 of 2023 was running 1,337.6 billion (which is $1.3376 trillion – a fair chunk of change). And this is up from last year’s revolving debt load which was 1,240.6 billion (or 1.2406 trillion).
In simplest terms, the Consumer Debt is up 7.819 percent.
Which there’s no way on God’s green Earth this will support (rational) stock prices on a 60 percent annual flight path, there’s worse news to come. We notice the annual flow rate of revolving debt was up (in March) only one-tenth of a percent. Last year, same period, it was up over 9 percent. And on the backside of Covid in 2022 it was up 15+ percent annualized.
Thus, when the CPI figures come out next week, we won’t see much change there. But we may see (in our non-expert view) a total train wreck in Retail Sales is possible next Wednesday when Retail Sales pops.
Easy to see how it happens (if it does): People cut back consumption during Covid. Consumption dropped. Covid rules came off, and Yee-haw! “Let’s all go buy shit and enjoy Life!”
We are coming now to the Piper in all these spasms of fear and spending. Piles of crap piled everywhere and none of it is even worn out yet. While it might be fund for the poseurs to buy a new 8K TV, there’s no content, so what the poop. Apple is maybe nearing consumer super-saturation (along with telecom in general) as the number of people who want to watch a UHD streaming flick at work or while driving is limited. So yeah, we sense change of mood is coming.
That’s what you learn when you get older. Don’t look at simple single headline stories. Look at the progression. Sometimes you will spot a winner going to the Moon. Or you might get a heads up on when things could crash.
New Unemployment Data
We always find it interesting that government is anxious to report on people’s race and national origin when there’s hiring to be done. But when there’s layoffs? (Could it be that old, White people are going out first?) little demographic data in there. Surely, we can’t be the only ones asking?

FWIW. I have noticed some tell tale signs of consumer cutbacks. Local theatre productions are getting harder to sell to consumers. Getting excellent seats to plays as close as this week. No sell outs. Discount offerings up to 25% off shows in the next month or two. Pre-sale specials on shows this fall.
Except for Taylor Swift, I am not sure this industry is going to have a very good year.

I know you know way more than I do on this and wonder.. will they be able to stop it at the present velocity it is moving to can they change it. During the last depression people didn’t even know it happened until they woke up the next morning…. with the interest flipping as often as it is. and the influx of illegals .. I see hyperinflation at just about every store I shop at.. that tells me the value of the dollar is turning it takes twice as much today to buy what you could four years ago..
We have not seen hyper-inflation.., prices have gone up., and in a lot of cases to ridiculous levels., but most of that is just price-gouging, getting away with it – while they can.
The purchasing power of the dollar has dropped – dramatically – yes.
.., and – it virtually impossible to judge., or gauge anything today with the last depression. We had a completely different population, society, supply lines, bankers, government, money, debt, import-export, work force, stock market – all of it was very, very different. I am not sure that there is any way to measure the impact that a depression will have on our economy – financials – society – a lot have tried – lots of numbers floating around.., lots of doom.., and most are hogwash and down-right idiotic.
A lot of people will get hurt., it won’t be good., but how many, and where and for how long, and how much ?? Right now., I can’t say. I am not sure any one can.

Ray, I replaced the cabin air filter in the Titan truck yesterday. After ten years and 99k miles, the ‘pulmonary ick’ consisted of a bird feather, leaf pieces, and embedded wads of dust & allergens. One can only imagine that an invitation from any of Nigeria’s 87 millions living in poverty would have generated similar enthusiastic response from the couple.
