Three DIY Eclipse Experiments

Never let a good hysteria go to waste, we figure.  And with the Big Eclipse today, what the heck.  Counting Lemmings, anyone? Huge crowds await a total solar eclipse in North America.

Our whole day is being planned around this event.  Even though it’s cloudy and unlikely to be seen.  No Sun? No problem!  None of the three experiments we’re running require direct viewing of the day’s silliness. We have our own.

The day will start like many Mondays:  Write column (keep reading, I ain’t done yet…), breakfast of half a dozen pot stickers, shave and shower, and a quick run into town to pop some certified docs to IRS well ahead of the deadline (a week from now).

We have a 1040X to file due to a change in tax loss carryforward calculations impacting our (already filed and refunded) Schedule D. E-frade-BorkinStanley acquisition fall-0ut from the March 21, 1099-B changes. Which also drove a micro change to our Schedule D-supporting forms 8949.  They go different places, so certified just in case.

Long as I will be out and about? A drive-by to do the week’s shopping early – can’t have too much in the larder in an uncertain world.  Even with seeds and hydroponics out the wazu, growing enough for dinner takes a while.

Then the highlight of the day. Darkness.

Clouds are on tap per the Gloomy Gus brigade, but astronomy assures us that the hype will begin at 12:24 p.m. in Tyler, Texas (the closest lazy-man numbers) and end at 3:04 p.m.

My first Eclipse Experiment involves hair.

(Been a while since German class, huh?  Warum means “why?”)

We are “people of science” plus or minus a bit.  Though we no longer observe “Don’t step on a crack or you’ll break your mother’s back...” Since both have been “long planted” we figure it doesn’t matter anymore.

On the other hand, we hate to waste a good hysteria-driving nothing burger., so off to Research.

Let’s Rolls Some Quackery

Language matters so understanding what an eclipse means down at the personal level is our starting point.

Things “coming to an end” (as the Sun is obscured).  And then, “growth” is symbolized as the Sun recovers.

Thinking caps, now, class:  Are there any simple experiments we can conduct at home, without triggering a SWAT team visit, that might offer some useful insights?

The Hair Experiment

Here’s a whacked-out concept for you:  We know/think/suspect based on webifying that hair length is (somehow) related to psychic vision capacity.  What if there is a little-understood mechanism to the “as above, so belowness” of local Reality (such as that is). Where hair cut on (or during) the onset of an eclipse frees you from some kind of mental chains. Freeing up your psyche?

The pseudoscientist (quack! quack!) proposes that as we go through life, there’s a kind of astrological “smog” that envelops us.  Our hair is an antenna.

So, logically (or what we can pass off as logically) by cutting off all your hair at the dark of an eclipse, you “cut loose” all your “old shit” and can then “grow new psychical powers until the next (local) solar event… (Has an almost Woot-like vibe to it…)

This explains why I just said “Alexa, set alarm to go off at 1:20 PM. to get ready for eclipse haircut…”

And a second alarm:  “Alexa, set alarm for 1:37 PM.”

All this so as the eclipse “swings” I will just be cutting off all the old stuff weighing and constraining my “powers.”  I will be cutting so the last hairs of the cut will fall at 1:44 PM local time; totality is from 1:43 to 1:45 p.m. around here. Hair-be-gone time.  George the psychic arrives?

Financial Experiment

One of the reasons I went short an index ETF over the weekend was that I’ve never read anything specifically about a possible link between eclipses and market behaviors in the micro sense.  Sure, we all know we’re in a Puetz Window for a crash, but this close to the top…not likely.  That’s why crisis may hold off until April 23-24, or there abouts.

On the other hand, we have to wonder (since very early Futures were down) whether the market will decline into Totality and then rally late today, and Mr. Irradiance returns?  I have many hundreds of cheeseburgers on the line for that one.

Last, but not least, we will move right into the greenhouse, as soon as the last whiskers off the head are shorn.

There we will be planting a number of hydroponic containers.  I asked one of the AI’s… “Do crops planted during solar eclipse grow better?”  The answer was a lot longer and more detailed than I was expecting:

This will be interesting only if I plant two of the 18 plant site units.  One today on the “new side” of the eclipse.  And another in a week, or so, when the eclipse influences should be minimal.

Then, picture where the same plantings are at the 7- and 14-day marks, and then how well each transition into dirt growing for finish au naturel.

  1. I will await your results of your hair removal experiment with great anticipation. I have often lamented my lack of psychic abilities and now yet another possibility comes forth. I have been losing my hair since I was 15 and always had short hair to begin with so after researching and analyzing my wetware data storage this would be about the time I think those abilities began to wane and going completely away by about year 28 when baldness was nearly complete. I think plants and agricultural items have enough to worry about just getting through the growing season to worry about the eclipse. One final query, Are you still doing any electro culture experimentation? I spent several hours in the shop this past winter making up a bunch of antennas for the beds and grow towers. Diana thinks they’re cute and attached some little plastic butterflies to a few even after I complained she wasn’t taking my scientific endeavors seriously. Will you be adding any to your hydroponic setups? I’m having difficulties cobbling up supports for the little buggers in the water tanks and rails?. Diana said I should try putting them on little boats. See what I mean.

    • Jim, my bald brother. I too lost my hair at about the same rate as you. I did notice something though. As I lost my hair and became bald, my long haired friends spent much of their time pontificating instead of acting. Perhaps it was the cooling effect on my dome but I became increasingly able to solve problems instead of just thinking about solutions.

      I did try a hairpiece once but I suddenly looked like John Lennon and couldn’t keep the girls away. My brother went into a laughing fit one night when he first saw me and I burned the wig in un ceremonial fashion in the fireplace in front of him to prevent his death from laughing.

      Sorry for the craziness. Must be the eclipse.

      Last year I put a copper wire antenna in my rhubarb tub, and within a couple of weeks my plants started to wither. May have been influenced by the copper, but they recovered a few weeks after I removed it.

      I seem to recall my greatest success with women(such as it was) was when I was told to “be myself”, and having no idea what that meant and having to do something, I just grew my hair and beard way beyond what a proper hippie might. I only stopped that when people started to think I was homeless.

      Good luck with growing things. I have my doubts about growing anything here by myself – too much other activity for one person. My new concern is the USDA forcing farmers to cull their chickens, resulting in yet another egg shortage.

  3. I love Coal.. great energy source cheap..if you live close to a coal mine its almost free..
    it gets a really bad rep. sure it can be really dirty if its used in an inefficient way.. use it right and its as great as anything.. I do not like nuclear power. its to dangerous and disposal of the waste is expensive and dangerous.
    I would love to see some company make coal/wood pellets for multi fuel stoves. using what they toss out. three parts saw dust and one part coal dust.. great heat output ..

    my problem is shipping.. to get coal cheap requires a whole semi load at one time..

  11. Can’t offer much on the hair/psychic issue. I’ve always had long hair and always had dreams that rivals Tolkien in their sheer fantastical qualities while also firmly rooted in my future self. That’s all I can say about that.
    I will say that today I’ve got a front row seat with the eclipse totality in my yard. so I’ll be tending fruit trees when it happens. Should be interesting. I almost planned a 3 day weekend getaway to Vincennes Indiana about 6 months ago as the Indiana Military Museum WWII reenactment was this past weekend, and it would have made for a pleasant time with the family. Nixed it all due to both kids going to HS prom on Saturday. Just as well, I heard Vincennes will be unbearable with all the people chasing the people’s version of the cat laser dot on the wall! Bwahahahaaa!!

  16. Chicken pot pie pasta

    Ingredients:
    8 oz penne pasta
    2 tablespoons unsalted butter
    1 small onion, diced
    2 carrots, diced
    2 stalks celery, diced
    2 cloves garlic, minced
    1/4 cup all-purpose flour
    2 cups chicken broth
    1 cup milk
    2 cups cooked chicken, diced
    1 cup frozen peas
    1 teaspoon dried thyme
    Salt and black pepper to taste
    1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
    1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
    Directions:
    Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
    Cook the penne pasta according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
    In a large skillet, melt unsalted butter over medium heat. Add diced onion, carrots, and celery. Cook until vegetables are softened, about 5-7 minutes.
    Add minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes, until fragrant.
    Sprinkle all-purpose flour over the vegetables and stir to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
    Gradually whisk in chicken broth and milk until smooth. Bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring frequently, until it thickens.
    Stir in diced chicken, frozen peas, dried thyme, salt, and black pepper. Cook for another 2-3 minutes.
    Add the cooked penne pasta to the skillet and stir until well coated with the sauce.
    Transfer the chicken pot pie pasta mixture to the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly.
    Roll out the puff pastry sheet to fit the size of the baking dish. Place it over the chicken pot pie pasta mixture.
    Brush the puff pastry with beaten egg for a golden finish.
    Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
    Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
    Prep Time: 20 minutes | Cooking Time: 40-45 minutes | Total Time: 60-65 minutes | Servings: 6 | Kcal: 450 per serving
    Tips:
    You can use rotisserie chicken or leftover cooked chicken for this recipe to save time.

      the article on salt water clouds has me wondering how any rain from those clouds will affect the soil and crops with their ocean-water salt content.
      Already seeing food processing factories being burnt to the ground. Farmers going under. Beef producers shrinking herd size. Prices up. Wages down.
      Now, this foolishness may ruin the farmland with salt rain contaminated clouds. Idiocracy! Foolish monkey-minded idiots going against nature.
      The whole water cycle depends on clouds forming from evaporation of the ocean waters, rising to become clouds and drifting over land to rain down fresh water that left the sodium (SALT) behind to be a light enough as vapor to rise into the atmosphere in the first place.
      What monstrous egos to subject everyone that depends on food to continue living, to their THEORY. As if the nitwits were entitled to experiment with this rather critical commodity called fresh water.
      Have any of the other readers tried watering plants with salt water? I suspect that this idea is going to produce a lot of desert land where food once grew.

        simple non toxic and effective..its static electrical charge does a great deal..
        the salt in the clouds is about as brilliant as them flinging mirrors into space to point the sunlight back at the sun..
        or putting a coffee filter on a carbon fiber line to the space station ..pull it up and down to filter the co2.

  18. The eclipse view was interesting. Clouds were off and on. Saw what looked like Bailey’s beads on the leading edge; clouds occluded on the back edge.
    I was being swarmed by insects up to the totality, then, bedtime for insect Bonzos. Dogs and cows were all raising hell in the distance.

  19. Dena and I got out our reclining camp chairs and got sunburned watching the dragon eating the sun. The clouds broke often enough for us to keep up with the progress. Then the heavy clouds moved in just before the total eclipse, and we only got a couple of glimpses of the ring around the moon.

    All in all, it was a very fulfilling experience.

  20. I heard a story from back WWII era that Native American ‘trackers’ were hired by the military. It was found that when their hair was cut to mil. Regs. They lost their considerable tracking abilities. Afterwards the native trackers were granted exceptions to keep their long hair… and tracking abilities.     • There were loads of chemtrails around the sun today in AZ also. It reminded me of a comment posted here last week that referenced something Hal Turner had suggested–that perhaps all the very unusual warnings and precautions being taken by authorities during the eclipse were to control the panic that would ensue if the eclipse enabled a view of a large object near the sun that was otherwise not visible. I presumed he was hinting at Planet X, in which case the chemtrails may have been an attempt to block that view.

      I didn’t watch the eclipse, but friends from two different locations sent me photos that showed a large, hazy object beneath the sun at the eclipse time.

      I didn’t leave home until about 1630 (and I wasn’t gone, long.) When I looked up, the chemtrails were the first thing I noticed. The sky was “hazy-bright” (real photographers will understand) and I checked it out to gauge the likelihood of viewing the eclipse. My sky was starkly contrasted with both chemtrails and contrails. Anyone who looked up couldn’t possibly have not noticed the difference.

      There were a shit-ton of experiments before/during/after the eclipse, done by MIL-types, weather nerds, college geology departments, astronomers, astrologers, and 10s of thousands of wannabees. For once, the presence of chemtrails might not have had a sinister connotation. However, I will confess when I saw them, the thing which escaped my mouth was: “Are you f’n kidding me!!”

  25. As I had said, I had an awesome view of the eclipse today. A few clouds, but nothing obstructive -especially for the totality minutes. That was absolutely beautiful to see! And chilly. Temp dropped fast! The nearby highway was quiet, too. Even the semis braked for it, I guess. But as Hank said, Indiana is still here, and alas, so is California.

  26. The first of the 1811-1812 New Madrid earthquakes didn’t happen until December, a few months after the a solar eclipse made an X with a previous solar eclipse over the New Madrid area. Other aspects of today’s eclipse were also similar to that eclipse, so we may still see massive earthquakes in the near future.

    When I looked at the charts two days ago, it looked to me like the best U.S. viewing would be in Indiana, from about Bloomington to Muncie, and in Maine, above Houlton. Yesterday, the “clear” line looked like it would reach past Portland, Indiana and almost to Lima, Ohio. Today, it looked like it would stretch from the Crane Naval Depot (or possibly even Vincennes) in Indiana, all the way to Toledo, and might be clear in Maine, as far south as Bangor.

    The eclipse would have been total (and viewable), right over the observatories at Indiana University, Indiana State, Rose-Hulman, DePauw, Butler, Ball State, Bowling Green, and Toledo. (Why the flock are all the observatories in Maine, in the very south of the State, where there’s scads of ambient light and ocean atmosphere to screw with observations and photographs?) I believe NASA was at Ball State (which sux, since I was at Ball State, last week) and NOAA at IU. I don’t know if government entities were at these other observatories, and it looks like they were the only ones in CONUS that got a clear shot at the event. (I’d guess a number of Canadian observatories got a clear shot. The Canucks seem to put a lot less crap in their sky than we…)

    With all that said, know what I saw, not in the sky but on the ground? I saw thousands of people, not jabbering about politics, gender, skin pigment or social inequities (real, or imagined.) It was truly refreshing, even though I’m certain it lasted but a couple hours…
