Eclipse -1, Kidney Stone and Chair Adventures

With markets closed, we’re just marking time until we get through the eclipse window.  With rain in the forecast for zip 75803, it promises to be a non-event.

Just in case, the UGSG website where you can find near real-time data on quakes is here:  https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/ Please make a note of it.

When you get there, the default view is of CONUS.  If you have a wheel mouse, a simple roll backwards will bring the whole Earth into view.  Then a click on any of the orange dots will bring up that quakes detailed info in the right panel. From there, you’re only a click away from the scientific minutia.

Kidney Stone? A Chair Story…

Ever since our big push on projects around here, I’ve been feeling punk.  The left forearm pulled tendons sprang back, but it’s taken a good 12-days.  But what hadn’t healed quickly was the lower back pain.  Hell, I thought it was just from bending over and paining sheets of siding.

But a couple of days back, I remembered Pappy Ure had a couple of kidney stone adventures (none of them much fun). Including one when he and my mom decided to live on the beach down at Ensenada.  Decades before cartels, we’re talking late 60s.

I had also noticed that my overnight pee runs had left the bathroom smelling, well awful, so a quick check of the National Kidney Foundation site (Kidney stones – Symptoms, causes, types, and treatment | National Kidney Foundation)/

Yes, the symptoms were matching up. So I set about working up a self-help regimen – no point bothering our PCP with something so trivial.  Besides, “Tough it out” is part of being a male in the Ure clan.

Acid’s Key Role

A little thinking and it became clear what had kicked loose the stone(s).

We have very hard water here in East Texas, and Elaine’s magnesium was literally 50 percent higher than “normal” for her post-BP episode follow-on visit.

I reasoned that one way to bring that down would be to get a water distiller and drop down the pH of the water we drink.  Distilled water runs a 7.0 and the stuff from the tap runs 8 0 to 8.2.  Shortly thereafter the god-awful back pain set in.

think what happened was the modest change in pH of the water dissolved a small stone to the point where it wanted to pass.  But it wasn’t clearing fast enough.  That led to a visit over to 10 Home Remedies for Kidney Stones (healthline.com).

Meanwhile, I had also notice that when I took 2 grams of vitamin C that my eyesight also improved.  “What odd chemistry is this?

A little thought brought into focus that Vit C and lemon juice have a lot in common (namely, the citric acid angle).  Armed with a little research, I have been drinking water like a fish. Along with cranberry / elderberry.  Peeing about every 20-30 minutes.

“How Does the New Recliner Fit In?”

Not sure if it’s a coincidence, or not. But you’ll remember a while back I mentioned that I’d ordered a new (cheap) recliner.  I’m too young for a power-lift chair, but $270 on Amazon for a chair with heat, massage, rocker/recliner I figured how wrong could I be?

Friday afternoon, my UPS guy was kind enough to haul this 86-pound box into the middle of the living room.

Meaning Saturday morning right after breakfast I got it assembled.  After clearing up the resulting mess, I set about earnestly “testing” all the features./  Including and especially the vibrator-massage functions.

They worked great.

With everything dropping into place, I went on about the day until around 11 AM I noticed the damndest thing:  My back pain was gone.

A reasonable meal, light on the vodka water, and 10-hours of sleep later, the “clearing” seems to have worked.  Only a bit of residual lower back pain, and the one overnight pee stop didn’t run me out of the loo from foul odors this time.

This morning’s column is a bit later than usual, but this is Sunday so excuse the tardiness.

The takeaway, for what it’s worth, seems that big changes in the pH of water (and foods) can sometimes trigger nature’s idea of “blowing out the pipes” a bit.  Which, while painful, when done seems to be good for the body.

I dropped more than 3 pounds of water weight in the past day. And another chair session later, the back pains is almost cleared.

Made for an interesting entry in Ure’s Personal Chemistry, Vol. 3.

Lemonade for brekkers, anyone?

      • you forgot .. How did we have a 120% voter turnout in some districts.. as well.. and what I find hilarious is TEXAS has the largest New voter registration of non documented in history this year… also several other states that have a high electoral vote.. so will Texas vote democrat .. that would be hilarious.. the one state that was targeted over the illegals crossing over.. then coming up .. voting for the one administration that is doing everything they can..

        • fact is @c, you do not understand the US Constitution and why we have electoral college to elect the President as the popular vote is just a show and is NOT LAW
some peoples kids, I swear got participation diplomas
another fact @c is the election was rigged even RINOs participate along with the demons,, can’t ya “cee” it yet?
The US Constitution is an agreement between the States and not amongst the individuals,,, it is the States that elect the President, how much money did you spend on your college piece of paper? You should sue for a refund

          need more clues?
as joe bribems has opened the border to ILLEGAL invasion and they are putting them on voter rolls and counting them as population to be falsely counted as citizens, knowing that the ignoramus will be dems if they vote and their votes will be recorded even those who do not vote,,, packing the voter rolls gives the cheaters a pool to vote with
Ranked choice voting is another scam they are getting passed in a few states, that cheat and the voting machines need to go bye bye
paper ballots counted at the polling place is the way to go and OH YA, IDs reQuired,, other wise ure vote is devalued by inflation of the voter rolls by non-citizens being counted,

      • OBD, the “National Emergency” has been in effect, probably since Wilson was da Prez.

It is the “National Emergency” which suspends bits of the Constitution and gives the President near-dictatorial power. It periodically comes up for renewal, and no President has failed to find an excuse to renew the “National Emergency” – not Trump, or Reagan, or JFK, or even Ike. They have all believed that they could wield that power for the good of the country, and thus, [have chosen to] not give it up.

‘Problem is, the “National Emergency” expires (comes up for renewal), some months after the President is sworn in, so a new President comes into the White House possessing nearly limitless power, and would then have to choose to surrender this power — more power than Putin or Xi, or even Un has over their citizens or national affairs, and run the Executive Branch without it for about 3.5 years, while slugging it out with a Congress which suddenly got its mojo back, for the first time in a century.

I believe Trump has the integrity to surrender that power. I also don’t believe he will (or even can) unless We, the dumbasses, elect a clear (and significant) majority of Constitutional conservatives in both the House and Senate.

BTW, neither neocons nor RINOs are conservative…

“Over 50 % of USA population Voted 4 this EVIL – over 50%”

Maybe it’s just the way you say it but according to the Fed Elections Committee, the TOTAL VOTES CAST for President in 2020 elections summary was 155,507,476. While I may not agree about whom the winner was, the number of voters that were counted is LESS THAN HALF the population.
That too needs to be addressed due to the shamefully small percentage of the legitimate voters that actually do get off their asses and cast a ballot.
Truth be told, I’m not so sure even the number of voters that we are told were counted is such a big deal. I’m for one of those competency tests for anyone contemplating voting at all. The ignorance of our history in America (no longer taught) is so widespread that the average voter knows almost nothing about the, “why, when, where, who and how this country even exists.
Have to laugh at the Canadians in possession of Canada with their idiotic bumbler in chief. Most of them don’t even realize they are subjects of the King of England and as such remain as serfs in what they think is their own system. Voting didn’t do much for them either.

      • The number of “legitimate voters” as you put it, who “got off their asses” was roughly 104% of the total number of people legally eligible to vote in a General Election.

  2. yes I am big on having ure own distiller. I see my home unit has really gone up in price to $795,,, ouch, It makes 3 qts per run, I put in a water softener because my distiller calcium’ed up quickly, I really like my soft water, the outside water for yard use is teed off before the softener.
I was wondering what unit you have for distilling,,, here is mine but it is a newer model, the change is the on/off controls. mine is an old timer, literally, the timer knob, ya twist it for run time
    https://mypurewater.com/shop/mini-classic-ct-distiller/

they have larger units, but I live alone and run mine once a day some days a couple of times, I keep a gal glass jug by my desk for my drinking glass and another in the kitchen

bonus points for being ure own primary care physician,,, as the Dr office has become my secondary care. I have not seen a Dr office since the man enhanced covid virus was used to attack America. I am blessed

      • We live close in on major German style Stout makers. Pretty sure in a power down they will hand fire brew. I just need a horse.

Young helper fella did wonders for the yards (edged and such, cut gobs of exotic grasses and made a blazing fire. I drank Stout.

Troubling brew out, celestial, WX and otherwise.

      • my old distiller is pretty old, as I ‘ve changed the heater element twice, I got it used off ebay. Three years ago I put in the softener and have not change an element since then, the darn element have suffered inflation also, $$$
        https://mypurewater.com/shop/heating-element-kit-otter-style-mini-classic/
It runs once every day, 360 days a year sometimes I miss sometimes I double brew, lots of use from it.

I have the same..I actually have several distillers..
… AN AIR WELL FOR WATER.
LOOB, this is maybe your best yet – on air wells.
I know a little about them but you are the first to bring them to my attention as one who is doing.
I’d love to learn more about yours and any performance figures you may have kept. Any plans or references you may have for same would be very welcome too. Water is THE necessity we cannot do without.

        • Oh Ed its so easy to..
I had an aqua police setup.. raised tilapia red claw prawns etc. the rainwater collection setup I had would collect 500 gallons in about five minutes in a mediumrain. my problem was..I couldn’t kill the fish. they became pets..after several years I gave my setup away. for water purification.. I have the cone..its designed for ocean water purification. I can just toss it out on the ground and through transportation harvests any water from the ground.
then I have the pump cart a two wheel dolly that a water bottle can be attached. A hand pump hoses that pump it through a filter into the bottle. we live close to a couple of lakes and stock ponds.
          for the air well..
A dehumidifier with a pump. goes through an ozone generator then the reverse osmosis up into a water dispensing unit.
          https://www.ebay.com/itm/305494308719?
I actually have several ozone units.. BIC here is a specialist on water purification..
an expert on the subject. his efforts in Africa has saved millions of people. he seen the need had the expertise.. the desire to be the difference..at his own expense he made the difference..A super hero in my eyes..god bless him.

I donate every month to the water school.. A mission of great importance.
everyone should read the book..once heavenly father whispers and you hear you cannot turn back..
my things are nothing in comparison..
if the weather holds this summer I will build a solar still with the younger grandkids. building lanterns and lamps.
the kids don’t see the need and think I’m over reading the news. the older grandkids give me hell because I have been to busy to show the younger kids what I showed them.

      • that’s cool Ray..
I have an old Turkish nomad still..meant to be packed and probably was on the back of a camel. similar to my coffee pot for royalty or my cold brewed coffee maker..it hold water but isn’t used.
reading Old literature you find that those were quite common for special ocassions. here is a place that makes reproductions.. I have two of the old ones in my collection.. maybe holds two cups.. lol
        https://revivalstillworks.com/products/stills/brandy-stills/
cuter than hell and so small..
I have an odd backpack percolator to. shove in in a pocket cool..one day I want to get a display case for the really odd stuff..

      • That’s why I bought mine to.. to make essential oils .. and the bigger ones for fuel..
oil expelled to make cooking oil..
when we went through one of those learning periods..cooking oil was and is one of those things that we all take for granted.. then reading and visiting about the past depression we see that was one of the first things that got rationed. people used mayonnaise instead of oil..
mayo isn’t anything more than spun oil and egg whipped up.
I have two one electric and a hand cranked unit.
peanuts once you expelled the oil can be dried and ground into peanut flour.
the Kelley kettle is just a modern russian samovar kettle..

  3. May have to get a clone of your chair … do you think Amazon may have one more in stock? ;-)

Friend has been in the Ultra Sound Tank 3 times now kidney stones … he seems to be very prone … but even after the tank breaks up the big one on the insides they then still need to pass, which I understand is still very painful. Glad you are getting your problem solved with no need to to through that painful process.

Getting ready for the Eclipse here. Got my Eclipse glasses, the car is mostly packed already and tomorrow morning before I go to join the grandkids I am going to make up Pin Hole device for seeing the eclipse without looking at it.

(take a sheet of dark construction paper or a file folder which is thick, punch a hole in it – a paper hole punch is good since it makes a round hole – and then you hold the punched paper between the sun and another sheet of paper you place under it. As you move the hole punched paper up and down you can focus the sun on the paper that is below it and watch the eclipse that way. This is the same way early cameras worked in the days before glass lenses)

Now to make sure the world doesn’t end with the eclipse tomorrow send me $10 each and I will intervene with the Heavens to ensure that you and your loved ones will survive the sun disappearing by making it come back after it disappears.

    • “a paper hole punch is good since it makes a round hole – and then you hold the punched paper between the sun and another sheet of paper you place under it.”

A paper punch makes a 1/4″ hole, which creates a much longer focal length than, say, a pinhole. The 1/4″ hole will require the viewing paper to be several feet away, as opposed to a pinhole (or even a small nail hole) that will focus the image about a foot away. A perfectly round hole is unnecessary. If you stand under a leafy tree during the eclipse and look at the ground around you, everywhere light passes between the leaves will produce an image of the eclipse on the ground.

      • Thanks, I’ll do both.

Been ages since I made one (40ish years?) so was drawing from old memories

    • the Costco chair is amazing.. I love that thing.. it is expensive.. but dam… I make a trip to costco just to try out the chair and get a hot dog at their snack bar ..
I also like how they package chicken breasts..

  4. Your adventure with kidney stones is not uncommon. As a chemist but not a doctor, I can tell you that while pH and water hardness is important, as outlined in the website you give, water consumption is the most important factor in preventing kidney stones. One clue was the odour you noticed during urination.

Urine should be clear and as close to colourless as possible. The article mentions defining 12 glasses of water a day. As we age and our bladder becomes less flexible, drinking this much water certainly can increase frequency of visits to the bathroom and cutting back before bedtime can help with sleep. Just remember to hydrate first thing in the morning. That will dilute and flush out the overnight accumulation.

If your urine is clear, colourless and odourless, you will have a hard time making kidney stones.

  5. When and if things go ‘Mad Max’, here is something to consider to help defend the ranch against a barbarian onslaught.

In 52 B.C., Julius Caesar used an ingenious system of ditches and stakes to defend his soldiers from an encroaching Gallic army in modern-day central France. More than two millennia later, archaeologists have discovered the first preserved example of similar defensive stakes, which likely protected an ancient silver mine.

A student team made the unprecedented discovery in the area of Bad Ems, halfway between the present-day cities of Bonn and Mainz in Germany, on the former northern border of the Roman Empire.

  6. As I was notified of my impending ‘downsizing’ (early forced retirement) I had a kidney stone that was stuck for five weeks! Living on opioids for the pain, and it made me a real cheerful guy at work at a job I was losing. Magnesium was the key to getting the damn thing to pass finally. It was stuck at the bottom of the urethra at the entrance to the bladder… the tight point. I took a massive dose of Magnesium Citrate that morning and later that morning I felt the stabbing pain telling me it had moved. Several hours later it passed out of the bladder with no problem.
It was rather pleasing at work to tell my overlords “F-U- No! I have a kidney stone!” I was a real bitch.

  7. Ecuador preformed a commando style raid on the Mexican Embassy – in search of a wanted politician., after Mexico announced that they had given him political asylum.
I can honestly say I have never heard of a country raiding another country’s embassy.
[ With the exception of Iran., but everyone knew that was coming.., religious fanatics filled with self-loathing.., yeah – we figured that one out. ]
I wonder what kind of ripple effects this will have world wide. As it seems once a diplomatic trust is violated., it becomes an acceptable practice., and storming another country’s embassy is a real violation of trust, national sovereignty and the Vienna Convention.
Ecuador famously hosted WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange in its London embassy for seven years after he sought asylum to avoid extradition to Sweden on a rape allegation he denied.

  8. This seems to be the third suspicious large craft encroachment on a bridge support recently:

    https://twitter.com/johnkonrad/status/1776786983097966862

    https://www.zerohedge.com/commodities/container-ship-reportedly-lost-power-nyc-harbor-right-verrazzano-narrows-bridge

It’s another container ship “Qingdao” and seems to be fully loaded. It’s next port of call is the Naval Base at Norfolk, Va! This ship had three tugs escorting it under the Verrazzano Bridge in NYC, but required three additional ones to keep it clear of the bridge support and prevent grounding. It apparently had a convenient engine failure too. It seems that it’s been allowed to be on its way and its next port of call is apparently Norfolk, Va. That means that it must enter the Chesapeake Bay, probably under the twin Bay Bridges. It should probably have a major tug escort(perhaps ten of them) just in case it loses its engine at a critical time!

The ship was built by Hyundai. So was the Dali. Apparently it was just a barge striking the bridge in Oklahoma. Of course, this might just be a coincidence, but it’s getting EVERMORE doubtful.

  9. re: “War of the Worlds”, 1938
feat: The Mercury Theatre on the Air

    Folks,

Did the “Daily Mail” ask Citizen Kane to manage its editing desk this weekend? What a travesty of journalism!

Each of Friday and Saturday saw DM journalists weigh in under the “news” folder with dire prognostications for European and American urban areas in a nuclear attack. Sunday witnessed the appearance again under “news” of a thinly disguised book report by none other than the author herself! “Nuclear war begins with a blip on a radar screen” readers are helpfully informed. The news report story does not bode well for the future of Western civilization and is rather incendiary in tone. Interestingly 18 of the first 25 article commenters claim to be Americans. The Wikipedia page of the author’s works perhaps could suggest she has been in the right places at the right times by fortuituous coinkydoinks.

(George, I think your Google ads remain problematic for browsers.)

    • The google ads I endured are mostly lies. Apparently I can get an extra $2400 check from SS, a $900 food allowance from SS, zero cost car insurance if I don’t drive more than 50 miles a day and many other goodies. None of them made any sense when I tried to follow up. The Temu ads were interesting, but I could never figure out what they were advertising – just stuff I couldn’t recognize. Ads with arrows or command text disrupt the flow of thought. I have even more problems with youtube unless I block their ads, which happen without warning in the middle of something I’m concentrating on.

Obviously, something needs to pay the bills, but why are the ads so dumb? When clicked on to find out more, the new tab often just hangs or leads to an infinite wall of text without meaning!

        • It was a good 25 years ago (and more) now, I asked my hacker nephew what the deal was, with the porn popups on “dark web” sites which were not porn-related.

Instead of answering me, he sat down at my computer, downloaded about 5 dozen generic porno pix, and built a website, then cloned it seven times, located a free web host (there were many), wrote a little script (Perl) to rotate the pix (but never allow more than 24 to any one website) and wrote another script (in Javascript) to spawn the popups and forward your browser to the next “porn” site. He then uploaded the whole mess to the server and tied the pix into some porn host or other.

It didn’t take him 15 minutes to assemble the whole thing. After it was live, he walked me through all the code. It was my first actual walkthrough of either Java or Perl and I’ll have to admit, I geeked out a little on it.

The price schedule at that time (late 1990s) was a penny a click, but 3-cents if someone clicked, then clicked on (followed) any link at the “new pornsite.” I did one of those “responsible elder things,” thanked him for the walkthrough and explanation, and suggested he take his sites down. After his reply to the negative, I responded: “You’re 15. Your mother will have my hide.” “Oh, okay…”

          He didn’t pull the sites.

He DID send me a pic of his first check. It was a shade over $4700. His mom finally caught him and made him take the sites down. She caught him when she and her hubby went to file their taxes, and he supplied them with his 1099…

This is why, if you surf Facebook, you’ll see ads or infoblocks which tell you something, but feature a [Learn More] or [Find Out How] or similar button below the pic. When you click that button, Bezos makes money and so does the owner of that advertisement. Even if the ad is phony, say to someplace like L L Bean or Harbor Freight (seen ’em both), the person who spoofed the ad gets to split the clickthrough buckage with Bezos, who also gets to keep both the metainformation and any personal info a person enters — both of which are much more valuable than whatever META is currently paying for clicks and clickthroughs…

You can NOT be too careful, and if there is a way to add to your “data and personal information” file, someone will do it and get paid for collecting it.

  10. People with Gout are prone to kidney stones, and should take extraordinary precautions to avoid both. The uric acid can build up in joints as well as kidneys. I worked with a young photographer at the TV station who had gout, and developed a bad kidney stone that clogged his kidney. The kidney died, and he had to undergo emergency surgery to have his kidney removed. It was a terrible experience for him, and he underwent counseling for depression afterwards. His whole outlook on life changed after that.

    • When I stopped drinking sodas laced with corn syrup, my uric acid levels returned to normal, and my gout disappeared.

      • Right you are, n. A doctor friend told me years ago that dark colas are very bad for your kidneys. He recommended taking allopurinol for folks who suffer from gout. He also said that red wine and red meat were not to be consumed by those who have gout. He described gout as tiny needles that begin at one point in the body, like the foot, and then travel all throughout the body, including organs. Sounds terrible. He further mentioned that gout can run in families. My late husband suffered from gout. He died from complications after having an emergency quadruple bypass, dying from multiple organ failure.
