Paranoid Monday, Anyone?

This is the kind of day when I feel just a bit paranoid about the future.  Things are “stacking up” and if you look very, very closely you can almost make out possible signs and portents of what’s to come.

To begin with, the high-roller’s party is over in Cheezerland. Which is another way of saying the Davosians will be home soon.  And, as these things tend to work out – in markets – you will often see a small run in the next direction, followed by a small counter move and then Bang!  The Big One.

So that weighs something in our thinking.  Prickish pecunarists and a sign of greed, mayhap?

Then there were several readers who pointed us at an “emergency” YouTube report (here) about some odd repeating HF radio signals. Naturally with our wide range of equipment and antennas, we dialed up and down the bands, but couldn’t hear anything. Still…makes you wonder.

Next was a report from reader LOOB. In an overnight post he reported that “the New backup generator.. failed last weekend… OK.. so think about that.. the wife gave me guff over it. she thought it was overkill.. but I think.. what are the odds that the electric company would be telling everyone to put in a backup generator…”

Yes, sorry to hear about that but hold the phone, Newt.  That last line about the electric company telling everyone to put in a backup generator?  THAT is going on here in East Texas, too.  Neighbor Dan talked to someone in the local power company and they told him that in a month, or two, the local power pushers would be offering a super low-cost chance to put in a propane fired home sized generator and have it amortized over a long period (like years) on the home energy bill.

Which comes (here’s the other odd timing note) even as the same power company is in a mad rush to connect those of us in the “outback” with rural high-speed fiber internet.

Markets at the Woo Point?

Then there’s that little matter we discussed on the Peoplenomics (subscriber content) site this weekend.

The market is within just a few points of tying the all-time highs set November 8, 2021.  On that date, our Aggregate Index hit what remains its all-time peak.  41,953.86.  Last Friday’s close was close (but no cigar):  41,829.84.

Several points of interest here, even if you’re just a “financial tourist” at this stop.  Foremost is that that Aggregate – which norms many different indexes into a single number which can be more meaningful than excesses in any one sector – can occasionally offer interesting insights into future price direction.

Then there’s my personal trading rule sets.  When we see a huge run-up into a Friday close (which showed an almost $3 billion swing in on-balance volume into the close), it’s an interesting bet/gamble/wager that what is going on in equities is a double top.

Of course, don’t let the fact that two years ago, Bitcoins were over $60,000 each – and this morning they are trading at $40,782 after kissing $40,360 earlier – weigh on your thinking…  And like this report headlines BTC price recovers from $40.3K lows with Bitcoin volatility ‘decimated’ (cointelegraph.com).

A close today of our Aggregate up 100 points and change would be a picture-perfect double top, though, in our work.  They are common enough in financial affairs that the Wikipedia entry on them Double top and double bottom – Wikipedia is worthy of review.

Sell the Rumors? Or Buy ’em?

Frankly, there’s damn little of interest going on early this week, so the markets could be semi-static for a couple of days.  Thursday will be the first real “event day” to be pondering.  That’s when we get – in a single morning – the…

  • Chicago Fed National Activity report
  • Durable Goods
  • International Trade
  • GDP
  • New Unemployment filings
  • And useful inventory numbers

Even with reasonable insights here, however, there is still the market doing it’s “double think” thing.  Which is where if the news is good then it will be taken as bad because something else ahead in Future will change.

So, if the numbers are all going to come in strong/good (the news is good part) then the market would sell off in advance of the report (the being taken as bad part).  Because the Fed (the something ahead in Future part) would be unlikely to quickly reduce interest rates and that would be seen as a squeeze on profits.

See how this pushing of wet noodles around works?  And then where people like me slice an occasional nickel is buy betting on this Wall Street version of the PASS and DON’T PASS lines at the craps table in Vegas or Boosier City.  Except, instead of dice, we use 3X exchange traded funds…

Ideally, eyeing the news (craps table) today, we’d say a small rise today and then a decline into Thursday’s number party. But it could just as easily go the other way.  Which is why we use tight stop losses and keep an eye on markets when open, following?

Around Here: Name that DEVICE

Having the new Starlink mesh network up, I set about this weekend renaming devices to make everything more memorable. The home studio audio workstation used to be “Studio” but that wasn’t exact because the video editor is in the same room.

I tried Musicbox, but all Alexa wanted to do was stream music from the group of that name.

Finally, I settled on “Hoochie” (for the audio editor) and “Koo” (video) and that seems to work.

The track lighting in the studio, once named Paramount in honor of Adam Beilenson’s collection of L.A. recording studios was also changed up.  It’s now Edison.

The outdoor, under cover, welding table Echo Dot changed from “Welder” to “Wilson” – in honor of the Tom Hanks movie Castaway.  It’s mounted vertically, so putting a basketball paint job on that one will be fun.

The light on my side of the master bedroom is now “Sunrise” (as in “Alexa, turn on sunrise…“)  Elaine doesn’t want anything to do with light on her side…

Still to come?  Trying to come up with fun names for a few other devices.  The device=Vacuum turns on the central vac in the shop.  But that may be changed to “sucker.” The guest room next to my office is Yankee because that’s where most of our guests are from. Our Egypt-themed guest bedroom lighting in the house answers to “Mummy.”  (Alexa, turn on Mummy” sounds, um, interesting….)

These are pretty easy to remember but if you have something more fun for the screen porch than device=Porch, by all means send it along.

We considered calling it Gaza – because it faces Palestine (Texas) and looks like a war zone…but for now, decorum matters.

    Moreover, recall some people saying, “what if the grid goes down?” Home generators are part of the solution of reinforcing the grid.

    Like cell phone marketing, “What’s if there’s an emergency?” A modern home will now have a generator. Gotta have it & only $xx.99 /mo.

    About a year ago or so Xfinity started their Storm Ready program. “Storm-Ready” = a fail over from the fiber channel to a cellular channel and the router has a 4 hour battery. Connect it to a generator and the home network won’t miss a ping.

    Moreover, moreover, since there’s a heads-up that ‘free’ generators will be offered this means jobs installing home generators will be opening up.

    .gov may even contrive an ‘approved vendor lists’ for home generator sales/installation/service.

    Sales could = scaring people and getting a $100.00 for every pelt.

    • yes..what are the odds .. 2 days after the power company was messing with the lines..I get a frantic call..no power.. them the circuit board not responding and every week I would have to reset it..what are the odds..
      If that wouldn’t have ever happened in the sequence it did..I wouldn’t have ever gone out to check it..

      • Some folks use home CPAP machines while others home oxygen concentrators and maybe others home hemodialysis machines. As time goes more and more folks will use so called medical devices in their homes.

        These home medical machines need good & steady power.

        Power company financed home natural gas generators are a natural fit and would be an easy sell.

        “Nobody will buy your house without the generator and when you have to buy the generator later all the incentives will be gone, sign here right now.”

        Throw the pelt into the bucket then off to the next house.

        • that is exactly why we got ours..at our age and with the necessary medical equipment.. extension cords running all around the house is not a good option.. someone could easily trip and break a hip..

    • Generac is the biggest name in house generators and their non-commercial models are ok. They are not intended long term continuous 23/7 operation, for that use their commercial units at double or triple the price. Being the last house on a 6 mile line segment that has 13 homes on it mine has come in handy more than a few times and has proved to be very reliable, but do your maintenance. The one weakness is fuel consumption. My 22 kw unit uses $30-50 of propane a day when running but it is about the largest consumer model they make.

      • the problem with most of this.. Is the parts.. take the dishwasher.. we had a dishwasher that was made in the USA.. they tested all the parts.. then it finally broke down after what twenty something years.. since then we have been going through dish washers every couple of years..
        well in visiting with the salesman.. He said he gets a commision that is how he makes his living.. so the unit is shipped up from california to the wastelands.. and is sold.. a shipping company gets about a buck and a quarter per hundred pounds per mile.. the company had to make money.. so what did that cost.. then to find out that the unit was made in another country.. and all the parts in it were made in china.. It drove me nuts.. how much did that unit cost.. in checking the cost for me to send it back to the factory was 3800.00… ok.. so.. what did it sell for there.. come to find out.. that the people working for the company.. isn’t paid by the hour.. they are paid a salary.. that averages out to around twelve dollars a year.. The dishwasher itself is high end.. and there retail in US currency is 4.50 cents.. Now that is about half an hours wage here.. but there.. that is one third or better than their yearly income..
        It is the same thing with out ozone generator..

        Great system.. retail from the manufacturer.. is about forty dollars.. I bought three of them.. shipping is a real charger.. I have two I use.. one for my drinking water.. and the other for the laundry.. one is a backup.. great system.. the sales lady is awesome..

        Now I make beer and wine and I bottle water.. etc..

        that is one case.. so I go to my usual place to buy them.. and I get two cases.. the cost.. twelve dollars.. shipping was high.. because I buy from them often.. like once a year.. or two.. the salesman noticed that shipping was exactly the same as a whole pallet of them.. I said.. I can’t afford a whole pallet.. he said no worries.. its ok they just increased my order and they still made money on it.. because I am a good customer..
        That is the problem .. these companies like Generac and the others.. no longer test the equipment.. none of it is made in the USA.. we get our parts.. when they were trying to get a grant.. for wind .. there was this huge issue .. everything was made someplace else.. how they got around it was getting it in cartons that said assembled in the USA..
        Now that I know the weakness of this thing.. I will be keeping a good eye on it.. and I will be getting a backup to the backup..
        the cost for them to come out and service this thing.. a grand if they don’t have to put any parts in it.. and it isn’t even three months old yet..

      • The problem is..we no longer build. we buy..with prices so low from other countries American industry sold out for higher profits.q tweeted sword all the way around..
        what save on products and those at the money making side gaining more money and benefits..we take away from our own communities as we support communities and industry in another country. they in turn become dependent on the water on the table flowing to keep their noodle moving as well. we in turn lose the knowledge and experience of our elders that would teach us..
        we need to become proud again..take time to build quality.

          Exactly.. My first microwave cost me almost a thousand dollars.. I bought that in what 1985 it came with a five year warranty..
          My ex Wife is still using that microwave oven.. No issues.. the quality.. the oven was made in an american factory.. where every part went into it had to be tested..My barber said that their what almost forty year old dishwasher still worked but had some issues.. with the drain.. I said don’t get rid of that.. clean the drain out.. but keep that dishwasher.. it might be an antique.. but they made them to last.. I bought a speed queen set.. it was the same thing with washing machines and dryers..made someplace else.. I have had that system now longer than the last five washing machines.. it has made in china parts.. but it is all tested and assembled in the USA.. I believe the warranty is off of it now to.. love that system.. when it breaks down I will get another.. the salesman showed me one dishwasher.. the Cove..

          made in the usa.. parts are all from china.. but are given a really tough test before they go into the unit.. the appliance store.. said they hve NEVER had one have a problem.. no frantic calls.. but it was twenty five hundred dollars in comparison to a four hundred dollar machine.. that I can get the extended warranty on and then they hand me a new unit every two years.. you would think because they know they will have to just hand out another one.. that maybe they would get a clue.. which is cheaper.. just giving out a new unit.. or.. doing the extra testing and making sure the units going out are of higher quality..Maytag use to be the best on the market.. but after my experiences with the products.. I wouldn’t let them drop one off even if they paid me to take it off their hands.. they sold out for high profits.. Now that is not the normal though.. see we actually USE our products.. most people use their infrastructure at work.. they don’t we use our dishwasher an average of six times a day.. most use it once.. the same with the laundry .. If your not at home.. its a great product and will outlast the warranty..

  4. Finally weather at least close to above freezing (31 deg) at the ranch but now after drizzle and freezing rain all night we are covered with a couple inches of ice. Roads and just about everything else are closed. Went out to take care of morning chores and took a header, or asser anyways, near the back door. Now I have to splain the gash on my right forearm and wrist and the bloody dish towel to Diana.
    Yesterday was spent attempting to diagnose why both of the networked drives are not visible to the new Win 11 desktop. After a couple hours of cussing I pulled out the old Win 10 laptop and fired it up. Low and behold there are the network drives. Not much in the mood for working on that this morning, maybe later when my arm stops throbbing.
    I’ve heard that clicking before on 2m. At first it was thought to be something with the repeater but it could be heard all around the band.
    Duck and cover then lock and load.

    • “Sam,” (Uncle, One, Each) has some rather amazing RF / HF / VHF / UHF tools. Propagation sounders, spread spec, data burst, “Smear,” Secure Links based on crystals (No kidding: really), Full-spectrum surveyors, Sig-Loggers, “Sig-Grabbers,” HF propagtion degraders (“dead spot” generaors, and all sorts of messing with the ionosphere (and groundwave) for fun & profit… … things.)

      To all contemplating back-up generators. I have a back-up and old(er) back-up to the back-up. Tried selling the old genset and decided it might be handy in the pole barn. Guess I need more gasoline …

      All my friends are spending an inordinate amount of dosh to have instant-on Generacs with propane. Nope. Not gonna buy a third fuel source (and sign up to pay when the truck refills, _if_ they can get here).

      One woo is simply not enough.

      • Gotta watch out when doing the “auto-on” thing. I literally watched a 50 kw FM xmitter turn into a boat anchor right before my eyes. This was after the power station dipped for whatever the sense was tuned to, the gennie made power which started the switchover and being hit with both caused a fatal meltdown of the xmitter. It was never to be restored and how I kept that station running I still don’t know.

        Unfortunately, I, too, am the first to lose power and the last to regain it, so I couldn’t care less about a pretty cabinet and an auto-switch.

        Personally, I’m okay with my 47db (@ 1m @100%) military diesel genset. It was many years ago when I suggested the MEP002A/MEP802A 5kW generator to folks here. At that time they were selling around $1200. Now they’re selling for $4.5k-$6k. They will typically run a constant duty cycle at 120%+ of their rated output (my 5k will run 24/7/365 at 7800 watts) and they’re EMP-proof…

        I’m honestly okay with hitting the starter button and throwing the manual transfer switch…

        • Where my issue came.. is I couldn’t get a switch put in.. There is so much new construction going on around this area.. that you literally have electricians a year to two years out on jobs.. and a plumber.. it took me four years to get someone to fix the circuit board in the furnace..someone to repair is out of the limit.. the kid that put in our gasline just graduated from plumbing school.. he hadn’t decided on which company he was going to work for.. so he would do just a couple repairs.. in less than a month he was almost two years backlogged in orders.. there is that big of a need.. otherwise you do it yourself.. you can buy new.. you just can’t get someone to repair or do regularly scheduled maintenance.
          My dishwasher..I bought a top of the line dishwasher about ten years ago.. but I bought it at a big box store.. the factory forgot to put a four dollar gasket in it.. no one would touch it.. they had to have a repair person drive four hundred miles.. then drive back and then back down again.. several weeks later.. the board burned out because of a system design flaw.. same thing this time they had to get someone from further out to drive down.. then several months later drive back and put it in.. horrible.. we buy all of our household products from the same company now.. because they keep a technician on hand for doing servicing..

    • Yaktrax with the diamond grip will stop that problem. I could run on ice with them (if I could still run). On another subject when I get a chance I’ll post a budget from 73. I think it was 600 monthly income. We were buying a used mobile home and saving money.

I forget what it was exactly.. now.. what I do remember was the electric bill was five dollars LOL LOLand on sale I could get eight cans of tuna for a dollar on hot sale.. totino’s pizzas when they came out were on sale as the one and only party pizza for ten cents..
        Heck.. back in two thousand ten… a loaf of bread went to the sky height limit of sixty five cents.. LOL it was still a dollar something until this administration.. now what is it..

      • I remember when a mansion cost 30 grand and I could buy 5 acres for 2 grand ..that now sells for 150 grand a lot..when I tjought if I ever make 4 dollars an hour I would be… RICH…
        when I met my wife a nurse.. she made 4.50 cents an hour..in what 94 they raised their wages to 5..
        at one hospital the second in command was downsized.. his daughter is best friends with mine..we were sitting out having a cold beverage watching them play and he was telling me about how he was insulted with an offer of half million in Colorado for a wage.. I said he’ll for that kind of cash they could beat the hell out of me..perspectives..he had no clues on what us on the floor did or made..

  6. Off topic but interesting dream. Some good, some woo, some shock.
    Started walking into the Fort Point area in San Fran. Lots of people climbing all around. I was there because i had heard the Golden Gate Bridge was being dismantled and I wanted to see how the Gate looked. Was with my wonderful wife. As we climbed around on the SF shore wall we came upon an odd semi-circle opening with a bunch of ‘loge seats’ oddly facing away from the grand view. Looking deeper into the opening it was a huge underground amphitheater with seating for many people.
    Then we climbed to the area that was the view point on the SF side and it was now just an edge almost straight down. And what a sight. The bridge span was totally gone all the way to the South tower. Little boats and barges were hauling scrap away hundreds of feet below. The water was clear and the bottom was visible. Then a guy told me it was just time to take it down, or it might fall down in the next BigOne.
    I turned away and my wife was away exploring the ragged hillside that is there. Suddenly she was falling down, ragdoll rolling to the bottom. She waved at me when she stopped and i began to find a way to her but found myself in a maze of catacombs and doorways frantic to find her. Finally outside, there she was and there was a tall man in a doctor’s white coat, white hair close cropped, his leather doctor bag next to him. He said it was important to do something before the wounds congealed. Then i saw her legs were missing the feet. I asked him where her feet were and he said, “In the car”. I forced myself awake at that point and hugged her in her sleep.
    It was a profound moment in my life and I told her the whole story.
    We are truly paired and blessed to be together. I know i would love and care for her even if she had no feet.
    And she told me not to worry. She would never do anything stupid like that.
    Dreams. What a trip.

    • One way to read this – as an outsider – is there are so many refs to SF, close to the edge and “missing it by a few feet”….a ref to a nearby Big One? Future leaks in odd and manysterious ways….         Steel Bridges don’t last forever around salt water … old Roman stone bridges might come close but steel has a nasty habit of rust (old B&O RR granite bridge across a broad ravine in my old hometown that B&O built in the early 1850’s as part of their early main line build is still in use and carries the modern HEAVY trains 170 years later with no problems – absolutely beautiful stonework btw).

        Chinese downtown restaurant I went to for years for lunch until the old Chinese guy retired and it closed had a HUGE painting on the wall of the GG Bridge’s supports being over topped by a HUGE Tsunami. Yep, he came from San Fran earlier in his life but it makes you wonder WHY would he put such a huge painting with that scene on the main wall of his busy restaurant. Makes you go umm … (why he left the coast and moved to the middle of the interior well away from ANY large body of water?)

        Hopefully just a random dream … and not a foresight into any future event that is close.

  10. Hahaha. I just made a young girl cry haha. I was in Walmart had to get eggs and cream and milk and furnace filters and got some spackling for that Victorian lamp. And all ever seem like everywhere I went there was this young lady and her baby in there and she kept looking in her wallet doing the mental math on what she could afford to get..just to see if she had enough for the items she was putting in her cart..  well then I went got the eggs cream etc got in line and was checking out and she pulled in right behind me.           I never understood this. I would always count before I got to the store, then do the running total in me head. The more times you count the money in your wallet or pocket, the less you’re likely to have, as the percentage of dropping some and losing it goes up with every count, and no matter how many times you count it, none o’ dem billz iz gonna have a baby while its in yer pocket.

          I had a chance to do this a couple months back, and didn’t, because the gal bought booze and cigs, and ice cream for herself, leaving the food in her cart at the checkout. She also stole about $100 in batteries (which I didn’t notice until after she’d left the store). She has 3 kids but none were with her. ‘Been wrestling with this one, mentally, ever since. At my age I don’t run into mental or emotional quandaries very often, but this has been one.

    Supposedly, there were only 12 NYPD officers who viewed the videos in 2016 on Weiner’s laptop, all of whom were sickened and required psychological counseling afterwards. As of now, at least 9 of those police officers are dead.

    The Hillary/Huma video was widely dismissed as pure fiction and merely a “conspiracy theory. Now, with more and more evidence documenting wide-spread child trafficking and satanic rituals carried out by the “elites”, this story may not be as far-fetched as initially claimed.

    2 packages of hidden valley ranch dressing
    1 tbsp of garlic powder
    1 tbsp of onion powder1 tbsp pepper flakes
    1 two gallon zip lock baggie
    mix all the ingredients in the bag then add the crackers. close the bag and rotate the bag making sure all the crackers get covered. lay on the counter and every time you go by flip the bag over..after several hours put on a baking sheet and put in a 300 degree oven for a half hour..its the same way you make flavored croutons..

    Superbowl egg bake..
    I cake pan line with tortillas..
    pour in 10 eggs
    lay bacon ( already cooked or uncooked your choice)
    lay on that jimmy deans sausage links between the bacon strips ( I like jimmy deans you choose your favorite not mine)
    pour drained cooked potato cubes on top..
    season with garlic salt
    onion salt
    pepper
    paprika

    cover with foil bake at 350 for 45 minutes then uncover for ten minutes to brown the cheese..
    we also use hash brown potatoes instead of cubbed.. I tried Ham and hamburger you can also cook the sausage with hamburger half and half and sprinkle the crumbles on top. of the bacon.
    we call it egg bake.. you can scramble the eggs I don’t the boss scrambles the eggs..we use the large flour burrito tortillas..
