NFIB – Quakes and Cleaning – Manic A/C Bubble Writing

Markets are still “backing and filling” as the approach of inflation data (CPI from U.S. BLS) pops tomorrow.

For now, there looks to be “hope in the hinterlands” – those regions where massive corporates don’t own it all – yet.  Today’s poster child for hope? A press release:

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Aug. 11, 2026) – The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index rose 2.4 points in July to 99.8, rising above its 52-year average of 98.0. This marks the highest level since August 2025. Of the 10 Optimism Index components, eight increased, and two decreased. Hiring plans improved substantially and contributed most to the rise in the Index. Real sales expectations and reports of inventory levels as “too low” both fell by 2 points. The Uncertainty Index rose 2 points from June to 91, remaining well above its historical average of 68. The rise was driven by an increase in owners reporting uncertainty about whether it is a good time to expand and capital expenditure plans.

While we expect fortunes of the world to recede following Labor Day, there is still the matter of real optimism, but also the rear-view effect.  This kind of data – by its nature – is retrospective.  We are always just one megaquake, nuke, or total policy train wreck away from disaster.

Which explains a great deal of insomnia.

3. U.S. childhood-vaccine policy shifted by presidential order. Vector: New. Trump signed an order advocating separate administration of childhood vaccines, including splitting MMR into single-disease shots where possible; 
This puts pediatric practice, insurance logistics, state rules and public-health messaging into immediate flux.

4. Western U.S. wildfire loading remains at nationally consequential levels rather than easing down. Vector: Unchanged. NIFC reports 46 uncontained large fires in the Northwest, with extreme fire behavior, evacuations, road closures and threats to homes and critical infrastructure; very low humidity and additional dry-thunderstorm ignition risk remain in parts of the West.
The practical U.S. consequence is continued competition for crews, aircraft and local emergency resources.

6. Trump’s Gaza Board of Peace says its plan remains active despite Netanyahu rejecting an Israeli withdrawal until Hamas is genuinely disarmed. Stalled but active. (Bibi election looms – we expect an ultra-hard line on Gaza until.)

7. U.S. and South Korean forces will begin annual large-scale exercises next week after North Korea resumed ballistic-missile testing. Regional tension rising.

8. Related: The Pentagon is publicly urging Asian allies to spend more on defense. Burden shifting accelerates.

9. Fourteen illegal miners died and scores were injured at a disused South African mine near Rustenburg, according to police. Newly confirmed. More “crustal shift” related? Watch mines in addition to quake logs.

10. Johannesburg’s chronic water failures are pushing wealthier residents toward private wells, tanks and off-grid systems while intensifying political anger among poorer residents. Infrastructure stress worsening. Dystopia novels about global water control are really starting to make sense…

11. The FDA has begun tightening oversight of food additives as part of the administration’s broader MAHA health agenda. Regulatory pressure increasing. Glacial speed.

12. Global drugmakers have announced roughly $500 billion of U.S. manufacturing and research investment as companies reposition ahead of possible tariff changes. Domestic capacity expanding. Witness the “Accounting face of compliance.”

12–96 Hour News Outlook

1. Wednesday CPI becomes the dominant U.S. macro hinge. A meaningfully hotter reading would reinforce rate-hike pressure while a soft print would counter part of the oil shock. Odds of higher: 95%.

2. U.S. crude prices:  EIA’s Weekly Petroleum Status Report lands tomorrow with the main data release after 10:30 a.m. ET; unexpectedly large drawdowns would compound Hormuz-driven oil strength. Odds of higher: 95%.

3. Midwest/Ohio Valley weather will produce localized damaging-wind or flash-flood incidents today. Odds: 78%.

4. Tomorrow’s total solar eclipse will provide the scheduled field test of Italy’s new Circular Slit Spectrometer in Spain, weather permitting. Odds: 86%.  Odds of another major quake remain above average as we model it.

I don’t think the monetization frenzy has discovered “newsertainment” yet, but in a momentary break from writing I had to consider that’s a possibility.  The category description can encompass a writer who enjoys cranking out both fiction and nonfiction work.  I picture myself sort of like “Your writer-researcher for hire…”

Speaking of PN – tomorrow we tackle FLL – the Functional Length of Life.  Sure, humans don’t work the kind of hours of a hundred years ago, but back then, no commuting time, schooling was optional and not 12-20 years worth. So it’s not an irrational thing to wonder about.

Next week part 1 (experiential narrative) on how regional mega-cities arise and display many of the timing markers of the economic long wave.  The following week, a more formal academic-style paper will reduce it to numerical feedstock.

Ahead of Labor Day, Peoplenomics readers will get part 2 of Ancient Children – and another David Shannon Adventure novel is in the works. Co-Dream.  This one has been on the planning board for almost a decade – just trying to reduce the backlog of projects. Working on the Co-Dream plot line has been fun (fiction is a lot faster to write that nonfiction).  I get to float between all the different corners of reality the science has pointed toward.

Though honestly? Sci-Fi economics didn’t used to be a category.

But then came Bitcoin and the slow decoupling of finance from reality – which followed the slow-motion disappearance of dividends. We are moving into a world where increasing risk is becoming the only direct road to economic freedom.

I never thought I’d live to write about times in which financial Russian roulette was the honored social norm.  But that’s the magic of social media, hypercomplexity, and interest-driven growth addiction.

The ending chapter of all of it should be along one of these mornings.  Just not this one, so let me turn the a/c down a notch and get back to it.

It’s getting hard to tell write from wrong, though.

    • I’ve always wanted to walk through a real coffee plantation…just like building..I would get a great deal of pleasure smelling the wood in sawdust..feeling and seeing the random flow..which is why hickory is my favorite wood..the wild pattern..dam beautiful…. Roasting my own beans became one of those unexpected skills I picked up during a “trial period” in life — each one of those periods taught me what other things I took for granted…each event taught me something new, so I’ve come to see them as training events that add quality and meaning to my life and the life of those I care for..which is why each year I give a light and a kitchen gadget..this year I made a bunch of tote cold smokers.. theres nothing better than smoked gouda cheese…

      There’s always something new to learn. it never surprises me how much we all take for granted that it will always be available……I think I got wine and beer down ..or close to it….my grandson and fiancee.. that lives in a neighbouring state to George just sent me some bottles. After getting their degree they headed to a school to teach.. all the grandkids give me he’ll because I don’t show the younger grandkids half as much as I did them..I said wisdom and a slap of reality that they could get hurt..wanna keep them safe..thats why I have my wife’s ability to keep me from doing stupid shit….they .thought the cacao wine was thumbs up best ever…I got to make some more..still have to bottle the buffalo berry….
      The down trial periods teaching me things i take for granted iins like home insurance..you take A photo of each room in each direction.. in the event of a catastrophic event..you remember the big crap..but its the little things that you forget are important..the photo reminds you of the things you take for granted once gone you wonder..dam what else was there..

    Weekend box office receipts suggest a type lax supernova zombie dud dropped on Tinseltown last Friday in the shape of the “Cookie Queens” film release. The movie heralds the arrival of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex lately of Montecito as executive producers to the film industry.

    Partial project funding came from the Artemis Rising Foundation backed by philanthropist Ms. Regina (lat: “Queen”) Scully (not of the X-Files). Artemis, Apollo’s twin, is the Greek goddess of the hunt, moon, and young girls. She was born on Delos which is adjacent to Mykonos of 21st century star-laden beaches. She chose the Trojan side against the Greeks.

    Separately work continues towards the joint Space X – NASA goal to achieve a manned moon landing by 2028 aboard the Artemis III rocket. Meanwhile the group can but wait and see for a screenplay on “Ancient Children”. Perhaps a Duke and Duchess can help float George’s boat in that regard. As chance would have it, Prince Harry is a son of the late Princess Diana. Diana was the Roman goddess equivalent of the Greek Artemis.

  6. I stand in awe of your writing productivity, depth, & quality. I’ve been working for months finishing & getting my current novel ready to publish this fall. Then, I’m just an old, recovering engineer, who never had to face newsroom deadlines, and I’ve resisted using voice to text. It’s something I should start doing, but the time my vision is useable is too short to spend it learning a new process instead of writing.

    • Write like hell – tell ai to clean it up and fix all the technical errors – they rewrite 5to fix all the ai e5rrors an d then proof it one last time after those come back “cleaned” – three passes – and the only reason I can suffer my own box two or three times is the final edit pass is done in word with robots reading to I hear t5he boo boos in story… trsllyu epotkd wrll (which cleans to really works well!)

    • There is nothing to learn. If you have a modern cellphone (say, five years old or newer) it has built-in text-to-speech and speech-to-text engines. Download an SMS utility (like PulseSMS which also works for iPhone, through its web interface) to your computer. Then use the mic icon to dictate your writing into the messaging app and send the “messages” to the SMS util you installed on your computer.

      Then it’s collate, drop into a word processor, and proofread…

  10. Rough(est) day (so we hope) half done. Despite ginormous efforts to help fight the beast, my sister passed today. I had spent (3) weeks at her bedside (skilled nursing home) so today stayed home.

    My only 1st cousin is in from LA. Sorta. Landed at ORD. The WX is so “sporty” it’s my hope he takes the train (which routes to SBN). We stood though another blow. Wish I could send rain to those under fire threat.

    • Sporty? 110+mph straight line winds! The whole of Michiana was under a tornado warning, earlier — not because of a tornado, but because of a band of EF2-level wind, 55 miles wide. I’m headed to NC Indiana in an hour or two (because I R Stoopid) because some of the spotters have been playing chicken with a truly breathtaking number of severe storms, for nearly 40 hours now, and crazy, bored-excited*, and dead-assed tired is not a good baseline when mixed with something that can kill you.

Some historical cultural practices and a few modern state laws (often derived from Ottoman or colonial codes) allowed marriage to drop civil charges, but this is not Quranic or core fiqh. Classical punishment for proven rape is the zina penalty or potentially hirabah (banditry).
          Men have sexual rights over any non-hijabi woman/girl (Claim 8): Completely false. No such permission exists. Non-hijab does not make a woman sexually available.
          Woman cannot speak alone to a non-mahram man (Claim 15): Overstated. Classical etiquette and hadiths discourage khalwa (seclusion) with a non-mahram. Ordinary conversation in public or with others present is not forbidden.

Taqiyya (dissimulation of belief) is primarily a Shia doctrine for self-protection under persecution. Sunni sources allow limited concealment under threat of death or severe harm. There is a hadith that “war is deceit,” but no general doctrine authorizing routine deception of non-Muslims for political/religious advancement.

  12. Dammit George! About the only thing I got done Monday morning was to run the VHF ham radio net on the local repeater. Then I started reading your Ancient Children and couldn’t stop… the whole day! And then well into today also. Damn good story, but do you realize that what you have documented is the operational procedures of the ‘deep state’ gone amuck? Scary. Now I have to get storm prepped, fill gas tanks and fill gas cans. NWS issued an alert for severe weather for the Big Island come Friday. Storm is gathering and may or may not reach hurricane status by the time it gets to us.. but a ‘severe weather’ alert was justified.

  13. Dept D546 summary sounds like it is skirting familiar Philip Dick territory. Having read Phil’s stuff in my youth, I would never have thought I would wander into his memes real life, but I have.
    Having survived and walked away from a fairly nasty and disorganized ambush some years back, when a package of a widely distributed commercial Indian herbal blend got drop shipped from an Indian source, I have actually witnessed guvmint action against a user of life extension-type stuff. Can’t be sure how many Feds were present, because along with the uniforms, there was a gaggle of secret police present. Didn’t say a word to me. All just stood around scratching their heads and their asses when I walked out the door of the shipping facility. A couple tried to tail me. I led them out of town driving 15 -20 mph. Saw a couple of the secret police later near the house. No chat, and as always, no apologies. I gotta wonder if G_____ worked moron vigilante CI’s into the D546 story? I need to download D546.

  14. Had a no-good supervisor of many years once intone breathlessly to a co-conspiratorial ass, “he remembers EVERYTHING”, to shut him up before I caught on to yet another breach of trust.
