Meandering Monday, Taiwan Tickles

Markets are setting up, in our view (but not financial advice) as making a slight bounce around the open, then continuing down for perhaps an hour, or two early.  But then we’ll see how things move in advance of news events to come this week.

As you know, we differ significantly with those who say “News does not drive the stock market.”  While that may be true in the review mirror, the Future is a major component of stock (and other) prices.

That’s because traders (like me?) will look at a period of time ahead, and then see what pending news events are coming.  And these are what often seem to turn into prescient market indications of the future.

Take This Week

Other than some minor news around 10 AM today (federal new home sales) the market-moving size data points come tomorrow. One of these will be the Case-Shiller/S&P home sales while the other will be GDP.

On the surface, they are only marginally useful.  After all, the Case-Shiller data reflects what was going on in December.  That’s because in the January 30 report, we remember reading “As of Nov 2023 | Published Jan 30, 2024.”  Which means the data tomorrow will be based on December events.

The GDP report has a different problem: It’s not based on who many MIPS worth of computing power was purchased, or how many barrels of oil.  Nope. GDP is based on “paper equivalencies” of hard goods.  The problem then is clear.  Will the report mean a damn thing in terms of jobs in real life (IRL) or will it be another layer-caked financial abstraction?

For us, it doesn’t really matter.  Because the Future is an ongoing (if not wholly circular) version of either:

  1. Buy the rumor, sell the news.  Or…
  2. Sell the rumor, buy the news.

Therefore, we can take either of tomorrow’s events, then try to game out – in advance – which of the two vectors of Future to expect.

Our (shallow noodle) on Housing is that prices will remain high, but the number of sales will be down.  In other words, while buying a home is still the best investment most people make, it’s likely that it will cause a bit more “Fed’s not going to be happy because inflation is persistent and too high” sentiment.  That postpones any rate cut prospects, which will be a psychodrama for the markets, which means a little lower (no free money in sight).

The similar dynamic may also appear in GDP.  That’s because while we expect a higher GDP, it will arrive at a horrible cost.  Three aspects to ponder:  What is the stimulative impact of 10-million illegals on the domestic economy?  Does paper-zeros with inflation really mean the GDP is improving?  And, worst of all, with Purchasing Power Parity as the behavioral driver, how much longer can the political sham (of sociopolitics as an industry) continue before we see the outcome of a “Tainter Point War?”

Remind me that most people don’t have any clue what a Tainter Point War is, so we’ll outline the concept for our Peoplenomics.com subscribers tomorrow.

“Ure Going Somewhere?”

Oh, sure.  Let’s say that (for this five-minutes) that we look for the GDP number to be OK, but strong enough to quash any last hopes of a Fed rate cut in March.  And, let’s pencil in the same kind of Futuring expectations around Housing.  Add in our favorite indicator (which says we should have a 300 point or larger dump tomorrow or Wednesday) and we kind of figure that the market could sell off a tradeable amount tomorrow.

Fine.

That leaves us (God no, this not advice) holding a short position over the weekend.  What to do with that?  The simplest move would be to wait until markets get moving – about a half-hour into it, the Future will become clearer – and from there we MAY be able to get a sense of “How much rally will a Buy the Rumor rally (ahead of tomorrow’s data) be?”

I mean if any or at all?

That’s because in the charts we use, going into the close Friday:

  • Crossing parabolic SARS and short-term averages were negative.
  • On balance volume declining into the close.
  • Fast and slow stochastics had not reached their common extremes.
  • And the MACD was in position to break either way.

I elected to hold over the weekend with the (thinking back to Friday) expectation that it might take a half-hour, or so, in today’s trading session for major market players to noodle all this out and start moving their bets around.  Since we are up a bit on the Friday lunch money trade, if we lose $100 bucks today, the trade will still net out a win.

The underlying math lesson in all this is simple:  While it is absolutely true that “news doesn’t drive markets” (directly) there is a second derivative function in play.  And that’s the KEY to Futuring that most people can’t wrap their heads around.  The Future our Second Derivative of Present Events.  To borrow the Wiki on it:

“Informally, the second derivative can be phrased as “the rate of change of the rate of change”; for example, the second derivative of the position of an object with respect to time is the instantaneous acceleration of the object, or the rate at which the velocity of the object is changing with respect to time…”

Which is when I looked at the Friday close, noted the “rate of change of the rate of change” suggested an even-odds chance that we will retest the late session lows of Friday, and a tad more, but then a run up into the close today might be expected because “Good news” tomorrow on GDP and Housing will be bad news in fact and the market could decline into Wednesday to meet up with another one of our indicators.

Long discussion, but a word to the wise:  When you think about the future, remember that a binary decision point is popped by the quantum foam.  But upon close inspection, the “rate of change of the rate of change” going into the decision point will (greater than chance) tell you which way the Future will POP! (To borrow the Fred Alan Wolf notation (from Starwave, I think).

Since I know the lower limit of price of my investment vehicle on Friday, a revisit to that price this morning would be a most satisfactory outcome.  Then a rally to the close…

OR – and this is key – none of the above because of Uncertainty. Which is why money management rules on limiting losses must always take precedence!

Taiwan Tickles

Three items out of Taiwan have our attention – besides the Taiwan/Musk Starlink issue.

First is they had an earthquake overnight. M 4.9 – 31 km E of Yilan, Taiwan (usgs.gov)  – in fact, a whole string of quakes from Taiwan down into the Philippines, so something big is coming – just geological time scales aren’t exactly tradeable.

Second point (China eyes) Taiwan’s Narwhal submarine finishing up harbor acceptance testing.

Third? Those pesky PLAN folks are hovering: China conducts patrols in waters around Taiwan-controlled Kinmen Islands.

We are still in the “soft opening” of World War 3.  But even as Ukraine has been the NATO capture en passant out west it’s a little different opening gambit as Philippines Fortifying A Taiwan Front Line Against China.

Western “regime change artists” are trying to gin up a replacement challenger for Putin, but so far with only weak results. The Russian Hero Rising From Alexei Navalny’s Shadow—and Gunning for Vladimir Putin.

Already, we know that the large “Weapons of Economic Destruction” may not be EMP. It could simply be the China/Russian axis imposing massive trade sanctions on us, like we have on Russia.  And that could make web-to-consumer companies (think Amazon) as “shorts of a lifetime” when China sanctions us in months and years ahead. BTW, looked at how Amazon stock has done over the past year, hinted my deflationist pal Jas Jain in an email?

One last WW 1 replay point.  The next country to declare war…could it be Yemen? And might they ask for Iranian help?  Since we just tweaked Yemen as US, UK Lead Retaliatory Strike Against Houthis in Yemen. Popcorn and QuikClot at the ready.

By the short hairs, it is…

ATR: Victories of Logic and Reading

Reading notes first: My pal (The Major) is insisting I read two books:  “The Return of the Gods” and  “The Josiah Manifesto: The Ancient Mystery & Guide for the End Times” by Jonathan Cahn…so trying to carve out some reading time.  The Major reassures me it will help context possible WW 3 end times. In return, though, I insist he read G.A. Stewart’s books, Nostradamus and the Third Age of Mars (2024) and the Compendium.  Between these books (and our odd second-derivative view of Futuring) it could be an interesting year.

Victories of Logic: Two enjoyable moments this weekend which will be appearing in detail on my Ultra-Make website (for people who are makers not just thinkers):  One was the notion of using a shipping pallet for a quickie shed template.  In my case, to get the generator shed off my to-do list quickly.

The other is a ham radio project – the restoration of an SX-146 to go with the already restored to working HT-46 matching transmitter.

I’ll give you the punchline right now (*RTFM – read the frickin manual!).  But the detail level – with circuit diagrams – will be very useful and interesting to anyone working on a solid STEM education.

Gastronomically?  Home run with the split pea soup and the leftover ham bone Sunday.  Yum and a half.

Today, a high of 84 is coming which will me mostly missed, sorry to report. Since I will be working on Peoplenomics and the Tainter Point War article.  The update of “Live on $10,000 a year (or less) gets pushed another week.

Oh man, did that bring back some great memories. When I was growing up, my mom would make pork hocks and split pea soup from scratch (except slaughtering the pig of course). It was a smell and meal I remember most from my childhood. Double yum.

There is more than one reason to come to this website. LOL.

  6. What if? 2007 was issue due oil spike and housing bust. Luck can spending like japan buying bonds got us to. 2016. More fed aid got us to 2019 and subprime debacle, Covid fed treasury combo spend got us to 2024. Now interest rate issue and city bust requires and Brics failure to do more spending. Wars are a toss up for manufacturing 7x dollar circulation improvements over 2x services. So a Vietnam effort overseas ensures inflation drawdowndebt with economic support cities with immigrant spin ups. Brics caught short as number one China housing goes under and zi flat footed to spend internally and Brics inflationcover his issues.

  7. A ponder..,
Do the old tried-n-true market indicators, the ones that have been followed and acted upon for decades., say – prior to 2000.., still hold any weight? Are they still., of any value ?? With the computers they currently use and the sheer mass of money being tossed about – have those indicators been forced out the back door? No longer relevant in our software driven, algorithm controlled society?
Case in point: The stock market has never crashed ‘before’ a recession. One time -both did happen in the same week. Does that ‘indicator’ still hold water? Many pundits now believe we may escape a recession altogether., that it is all now in the hands of The Fed.., Keep rates high – recession.., cut too soon – and inflation comes roaring back [ as in the 70’s] Which, if either are true, I can not say. They have been warning about the credit bubble popping for over a year now., it still hasn’t. ., and the Real Estate markets., and debt fiasco.., but here we are – still motoring on down the highway. Agreed, that we aren’t wearing a seat belt and we are way over the speed limit., but we are still moving right along.
When someone can throw a billion and change into an investment vehicle that has zero value – well, I have no idea how to chart that type of action – or what the ramifications would be to, say – the bond market., or the dollar’s value. Nothing I know of can account for that type of trade-action.
.., However, the question still stands.,, if we don’t have an official recession – will the stock markets still crash ? Or.., will it all just pop at once – with the first mushroom cloud appearing over the horizon ?

    • Yo Thor,

The answer 2 your question (s) lies with one Dengxiao Pooteen and his right hand Man, the former president Medvedev and his Financial Punishment and Revenge speech on Friday.

And I quote..” creating various difficulties in the economy, stirring up public discontent over the foolish policies of the authorities in the west, and promoting international decisions that undermine the interests of the Western world”

    Just a smalll quote;
    Krzysztof Jackowski – Polish Clairvoyant
    “I’ll say it this way:
    I have the impression that…
Ukraine will be supplied with living force
Now: it’s not just about weapons, it’s about living force.

at the beginning it will look like entering Ukraine but not taking part in the conflict itself, but this will be a temporary narrative…
3 countries will participate in this. and…
“11” reminds me of the eleventh day of the month (Krzysztof doesn’t specify of which month)
twenty-second or eleventh, this will cause a total storm, a total storm, political at first”

  10. “China could easily launch a surprise attack on Taiwan during it’s constant military drills around the island nation.”

Gee.., ya think!? What brilliant military mind came up with that public statement? Oh.., right.., a U.S. Navy admiral.

  11. According to Italian media reports, NATO has alerted its members to the absence of the Belgorod from its White Sea base, where it has been stationed since July. The Belgorod carries the nuclear torpedo drone ‘Poseidon’. [Capable of 1,600-foot wave that could devastate coastal cities. Russia media.] Imagine one of those fired up the Potomac., or the Thames.
Which is what I believe, Nostradamus was referencing on England.
However, I do question this ‘sudden disappearance’. One of the most dangerous submarines in our enemy’s arsenal – and we are not satellite-tracking it – minute-by minute? Seriously?

  12. Bezos, Dimon and Zuckerberg have sold nearly 9 billion in stocks lately. And Warren Buffet has just increased his cash holding to $168 million dollars. – do they think the markets won’t go much higher ?

There are few other fanciful-financial headlines this morning that are completely erroneous and deliberately misleading.
    .
Be careful what you read.., it would appear that we are being deliberately misled this morning. Seems they are telling us to watch the monkey, when it’s actually the elephant we should be keeping our eyes on.

  15. The $AMZN short is a great idea.

But as pointed out previously “force majeure” will likely bust the trades.

What are stocks? Charles Schwab says,

“A stock represents a share in the ownership of a company, including a claim on the company’s earnings and assets. As such, stockholders are partial owners of the company. Fractional shares of stock also represent ownership of a company, but at a size smaller than a full share of common stock.”

We learned from GM. Nobody will be pulling a switch out of the $AMZN server room, or a network cable for fractional share owners and mailing it out.

What happens next is the legal beagles/Communist courts force $AMZN to keep the servers humming. Since they won’t have income .gov will bankroll them out of necessity. Servers create electric bills.

Bail City – “We need $AMZN because everyone is in the cloud. Without the cloud our refrigerators won’t operate and we’ll die.”

  16. San Diego truly is lost.
    – Over the weekend San Diego released another 1,500 multi-national illegals that had been rounded up over the past few days. – just dumped them out onto the street. The City and airport and marinas are now literally swarming with thousands of illegals that are pouring over the border in that area. Some reports are saying 3,000 a week.
    – May heaven help the City if all these ‘illegals’ get organized.

  17. http://www.onelab.info
ONELAB (Open Numerical Engineering LABoratory) is an open-source, lightweight interface to finite element software. It is completely free: the default ONELAB software bundle contains the mesh generator Gmsh and the finite element solver GetDP. Many other codes (free or not) can be easily interfaced as well. Looks very interesting; even has some antenna stuff.

  18. Split pea & ham soup… the fragrance of baking bread… Other food delights mentioned…

Site’s comments seem flowing with tastes and smells of a basic and deeply satisfying nature…

These evoke long and old memories, and deserve deliberate packing up in the soul’s bag for whenever…

Fear and financial illusions and delusions abound amid a free-fire zone of political and media quackery and bloviation…

It’s joyful and gratifying to enjoy the sensations of the bread and the soup as we pack memories against Armageddon… Those memories are well worth taking a time-beat out to notice, really notice, savor, and pack away for safekeeping.

    Forever.

    • the scary part… is that is NOT how it would play out..first off.. Look at what they aren’t telling us Now about most of what is going on…. there isn’t any plan to notify anyone..what you would have to look for is the sudden departure of your congressman.. or the mass of the extremely wealthy… the mass hysteria alone would be unimaginable.. when I was in dc we were told to go to the shelters.. afterwards.. I asked and was told that there wasn’t a plan to inform the US citizens.. but that a congressman had informed a friend in NYC.. the guy never made it to his bunker if the threat had been a real one he wouldn’t have had time..
then consider were do they have their dumbs.. they would have to go down before it hit and with hypersonic.. there is only a few seconds or minutes to get to it..

    • We in Hawaii were subjected to just this scenario VIA our cellphone alerts of an incoming missile alert… “This is not a test…” when some incompetent moron at Civil Defense pushed the wrong button one Monday morning during the normal, routine ‘test times’. I must have looked kinda pale when my buddy asked “What is it?” I read it to him, and as he started to panic I said “Relax. We’re not in Honolulu. Nobody’s going to waste a nuke out here in the jungles with no mil. targets around.” We went home and waited…

  20. re: “political sham”
    feat: Queen of Hearts

    Folks,
The tragic passing of Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny has Western propaganda mechanisms in high gear? Ukraine’s implication of a mrna vax casualty seem a long shot since he was imprisoned in Russia throughout covid? We are not being reminded that Mr. Navalny is one-half Ukrainian through his father and Alexei N. was (is?) despised in the Ukraine since the Crimean annexation. His Russian mother and Russian wife met President Biden.

Mr. Navalny had his “prisoner of conscience” status pulled in 2021 by Amnesty International due to hate speech as reported by Reuters.
    https://youtu.be/7m7QiB3ekKM

According to Mr. Navalny’s Russian media spots, immigrant “cockroach” problems are best dealt with by a handgun.

    https://youtu.be/hT0tCSaWZ9Q

The now apparently nixed Navalny prisoner swap had a person of interest involved being a prisoner held in Germany convicted of assassinating a Chechen in Berlin 5 years ago. Western msm offers a footnote that he had dispatched a restaurateur in Moscow a decade ago. A Moscow news website, Kovpolit, registered in America advises that the restaurateur had previously enjoyed employment as a procurer of special services for the leader of the republic of Karbardino-Balkaria. It looks like it’s situated on the south-east border of Ukraine.

It’s turned out then that Mr. Putin is happy with his hand?
    Check?

    Have a great weekend everyone!
