Fed Data & a Holiday Look, Refocus Inward

There’s a holiday coming Monday, so no markets and expect a short take on life planned then.

I did something highly unusual today.  Slept in until a few minutes before 5 A.M.

Sure, the beast of a cold was part of it; worn body parts in my 77th year can be brutal if not downright depressing.  But, there’s more to it.

A change in the public mood.  One that I’ve hinted several times (months ago) might lead me to ‘lower my profile’ on the public-facing site.  I foresaw that we could be entering a time (around New Years) when rocking the boat with too strong views could become risky. As always, I was early.

Oh, we will still be here – but the eloquence will be parceled, the opinions less clear – but more a “data and headlines” kind of place.  We suffer from competing interests, one of which is food.  Best taking with an unlimited side dish of freedom.

I forget who it was that said “You are always free between your ears, if you choose to be.”  The modern risk, as we see it setting in, is to become “joiners.”  It’s a disease that breaks out in humans every now and again.  Broke out in Germany and brought Hitler to power and paved the onramp to World War II.

But, it’s become “now and local” as we read today, ‘Unconstitutional’: Legal expert aghast after Noem says feds ‘asking for papers’ is lawful.

There is a new kind of fear making the rounds.  The comment from Kevin in the Minneapolis area (at least by his IP) is worth reading here.

Systems Thinking Helps

Reading a few more headlines of the day doesn’t provide any comfort.  In the study of the economic long wave (Kondratieff, et al.) there appear long-term social moods that arise coincident to economic moods.

The U.S. overshoot on manufacturing and a “too fast transition” from agriculture to mechanized farming all helped usher in the Great Depression.  But, in some countries, there was expansion, such as Germany’s move into the Sudetenland in 1939 marked an expansionist phase leading to World War II.

My consigliere and I might see an echo, of sorts.  With the U.S. “taking” of Venezuela.  The good news, such as it is?  The optics are being more carefully managed.  Venezuela’s Machado gave Trump her Nobel prize (medal). In return she received a swag bag but no promise of support | CNN.

By “the narrative” we are not supposed to see a Sudetenland II Replay.  Having “sold the story once” there’s a prospect of a re-packaging and “end cap” in Greenland.  Especially as European troops arrive in Greenland as talks with U.S. highlight ‘disagreement’ over island’s future.

To aid readers in understanding our perspective, here’s something helpful.

The Westward Replay of WW II

There are several historians who have encapsulated this view, but here’s the uncomfortable lineup of parallels.  Try to remember, this is a cut through pattern recognition territory, not absolutism.  In our modern replay setup to Global War III:

The German role in WW II may be played by the U.S.  Could Taiwan be cast into the role of Italy? Taiwan and US seal deal to lower tariffs, boost chip investment.

The U.S. fallout with the EU may parallel the German collapse of relations with Russia.

There is the recent experience with pandemic, too. Just as Spanish Flu was prominent following WW I, there’s a longer cycle hinted at in public health. Medieval Mass Grave Identified in Germany – Archaeology Magazine

The U.S. role in WW II may be played by China, which is taking over the “big Kahuna of manufacturing role”.China’s foreign trade hits record  $6.5TN in 2025 – China Economic Review.

None of these possible alignments are singularly predictive.  Yet while US president announces Gaza ‘board of peace’, backs technocratic committee, we have to wonder how that happened.  Well, except for now, Trump is trying to prevent a nuclear shootout in the region, and working “with” Israel may keep them attentive to global outcomes more than historical animosity. Trump puts on hold military action against Iran after Arab Gulf allies, Israel express misgivings.

Still, Iran’s not likely to be pleased since With military action on hold, the US puts new sanctions on Iran.

No, of course these are not directly associative. Test-fitting – it’s what systems people do.  I’m not claiming these are one-to-one matches; I’m showing the pattern of narrative staging + public mood tightening.

Media Becoming Problematic, Too

In the middle of trying to sort through the “power rotation to the west” it would be useful for media to be more austere and valid-source constrained.  Facts with attributable sources.  Yet here we go reading Was ICE training shortened to 47 days to honor Trump? What we know | Snopes.com.

We know?  An interesting term – knowing – attached to “three anonymous officials.

Yet this brings us to a Journalism Cycle, too.  You will ‘Remember the Maine’?  This context stuff really matters.

In 1898 the battleship USS Maine exploded in Havana Harbor. The cause wasn’t actually settled in the public mind with evidence so much as settled by repetition. Newspapers in the Hearst/Pulitzer era leaned hard into sensational framing, kept the outrage hot, and the slogan did what slogans do: it compressed complexity into a moral command. Don’t ask. Don’t wait. Act now.

It feels like the OMB (Orange Man Bad) mantra in MN – a lot.

That’s the “yellow journalism” pattern: you don’t have to prove the story if you can pace the story. You don’t have to persuade with sources if you can persuade with cadence. Emotion becomes the engine, and the reader’s nervous system becomes the editorial board.  Yeah, that’s why the Snopes piece was an “indicator” to us.

Fast-forward to the web era and you can see the modern upgrade: speed, virality, and “we know” language stapled to anonymous sourcing. Sometimes it’s true, sometimes it’s not, and sometimes it’s a slurry of half-true details that still moves the crowd like it’s gospel. The old press had ink. The new press has algorithms. Same human wiring.  Online monetization instead of news hawkers on big city street corners, but the vibe, friend, the vibe.

So, if you, like us, feel that public mood tightening up, when the air gets “joiner-ish,” it’s worth remembering the Maine not as history trivia, but as a cautionary label: once the slogan starts doing the thinking, somebody else is driving your mind.

More than half a century of real reporting off-and-on has taught even the thick-headed Ure a simple lesson.

This is a good time to step out for a beer and see how things develop.

Spotter Notes

Fed Industrial Production numbers roll at 9:15 Eastern which may influence markets.

Early we were headed for “flattish” market open.  Silver dropped under the $90 handle, but we shall see how long that lasts.  Bitcoin was nudging $95,445.

And while the news careens between the rails, here’s something useful:  We went shopping for the $3 dinner—and actually found it.  A piece of chicken, corn tortilla, and some broccoli doesn’t sound bad.  Especially with a tumbler of two-buck Chuck.

Around the Ranch: Ham Radio ShopTalk

ShopTalk Sunday is a long one coming up.  But, if you’re a ham radio fanatic (Ure checks the mirror), this is going to be your cup of tea.

Suppose the world were ending (no, not your fault) and you needed long-range comms beyond the VHF line of sight radio horizon?  How would you engineer a workable answer?

We take up exactly that problem in ShopTalk.  It’s an interesting discussion and a painless way (if you can stomach my rambling) to intake a long-ton of radio theory over a Sunday morning cuppa.

If we’re still here.  Which we plan to be, but we’re seeing a lot more wisdom lately in that (French?) eat dessert first approach to life.

Have a great weekend, and let’s reconvene Monday to see if there are survivors.

Write when one of us gets rich,

  1. As a 72 year old guy ,I get asked for my ID to buy beer , but not to vote. The police stop cars at dui checks and ask questions that answered wrong could get you jail time , but that’s all right? I am tired of the communists protecting the illegals and crapping on the American citizens.

    • An excellent reminder – and we’ve filed that with the “free speech protected” while protesters effectively steal the freedoms of law abiding folks going about their business (wait, is Ure pointing at Portland again?)

      • “The right of dissent, or, if you prefer, the right to be wrong, is surely fundamental to the existence of a democratic society. That’s the right that went first in every nation that stumbled down the trail toward totalitarianism.”
        ? Edward R. Murrow

America’s enemies have discovered how to turn our Constitutional liberties against us. ‘Repeat the rumor until it is accepted as truth, amplifying false rumors thru digital media;’ ‘Turn citizen against citizen, party against party;’ and ‘favor one’s political party over reason and fairness.’ We are an open society. That openness may well be our undoing, turning our differences against us instead of magnifying that which unites us.

    • Ure tired ?

Why I oughta show youse some real Iranian Women, from Persia.

Over there in the sandbox we know as middle east, Iranian Women are fighting Islam and Sharia Law, here liberal Women in United States are fighting FOR Islam and Sharia Law. What the what ?

Cant make this scheisse up, seems about half of American Women(the Libs) are AFU wrong or simply retards. The other half of American Women – not Libs ?

  2. An interesting book regarding Greenland during WW2 can give some insight into its present day strategic importance. The book, an historical account, of civilians who patrol the coast on dog sleds with old rifles and cobbled together shortwave radios until they spot Nazi troops.

  3. “You are always free between your ears, if you choose to be.”

Make up anything w/words. ‘If you aren’t malnourished – like the children in a Sally Struthers commercial – you’re rich, at least on the inside”. Right? If you ate today the economy is good.

Since ICE agents hasn’t kicked in our door it proves we have nothing to hide.

Prechter long ago talked about this but under his theories the Social Mood LEADS the Economic Mood. Watching the Social Mood of the masses is thus important for understanding the upcoming (future) economic mood (remember wrt this he wrote positively about Bitcoin and it potentially becoming some sort of replacement or substitute currency all the way back about 2011 or 2012).

Manifest Destiny II with Monroe Doctrine II all rolled into one is how I see Trump’s thinking and vision for the US future. Remember most people only remember 1/2 of the Monroe Doctrine which was for Europe to stay out of the New World, the US would take care of the New World.

The part they forget about the Monroe Doctrin is that the second part was that the US would STAY OUT OF EUROPE, something that we managed to do until the Lying, Narcicist, blatant Racist, SOUHERN Democrat, Woodrow Wilson became President (then kicking all Blacks out of government Civil Service jobs) and got us 100% involved in European affairs where we have now meddled for 100 years and 3 large European Wars, with a few small Wars on the side. (guess you can’t tell what I think about W. Wilson!!! LOL)

The US populous was against getting into WW 1, which Wilson promised to keep us out of during his election campaign to 1916 while at the same time scheming behind the curtain to get us involved in as soon as he was re-elected, and did. The US populous was against getting involved in WW 2 wrt Europe until the combination of Pearl Harbor and Germany’s Declaration of War against the US a few days later forced our hand. (many historians claim that if Germany had NOT Declared War against the US that even after Pearl Harbor the Congress would NOT have voted for War against Germany – but alas Germany’s Declaration of War against us rendered that issue moot)

For Trump his hand might be tipped TO INVADE Greenland just so Europe kicks us out of Nato.

Trump clearly wants out of our European commitments but can’t figure out how to do it. Forcing Nato to do the dirty deed and send us back across the ocean to our own shores would probably please Trump to no end, a result he would REJOICE about since that would take us back to the Pre-Wilsonian period of the Monroe Doctrine. (which is where I believe his mindset is – fwiw JD Vance by all indications has a similar mindset)

Let’s see if Trump FORCES the issue wrt Greenland. If so don’t look at it as an Island Grab but as a way for Trump to make Europe KICK US OUT OF NATO, which is what he really wants to accomplish.

(as for Trump’s “Manifest Destiny” beliefs ….. he clearly wants to finish the jobs that Jefferson [Louisiana Purchase], and Polk [Mexican War/almost US- GB War], did the spade work on. Why else do you think he wants the US to have Western Canada and to have an excuse to invade Mexico AGAIN? He wants to finish what they started)

    • Interesting this just popped up in the news ….

“Donald Trump has warned the US may pull out of NATO if America’s allies don’t agree to its acquisition of Greenland.

‘Will you pull out of NATO if it doesn’t help you acquire Greenland,’ a reporter asked the president outside the White House on Friday.

Trump warned: ‘We’re going to see. NATO has been dealing with us on Greenland, we need Greenland for national security very badly. If we don’t have it we have a very big hole in terms of national security, especially in terms of the Golden Dome.’

The Golden Dome is a proposed multi-layer missile defense system which the president says is reliant on seizing control of Denmark’s Arctic territory.

Trump earlier threatened to impose tariffs ‘on countries that don’t go along with Greenland’ as he escalated his pressure campaign.

Britain, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden announced yesterday the deployment of small numbers of troops to Greenland in response to Trump’s bellicose rhetoric….

…Danish foreign minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen retorted that a US acquisition of Greenland was ‘out of the question’….

…Large demonstrations are planned across Denmark and Greenland on Saturday to protest against Trump’s territorial ambitions….”

      https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-15470849/Trump-threatens-tariffs-Greenland-allies-dont-play-ball-need-it.html

From Trump’s perspective … everything is going according to the PLAN. Europe will want us GONE will actually HATE us, which will give him the excuse to do what HE WANTS to do, LEAVE EUROPE AND NATO!

“Bezos (Amazon), Gates (Microsoft), Altman (OpenAI) and Bloomberg (Bloomberg LP) rushed to take stakes in KoBold Metals, a Greenland-based minerals explorer. And Thiel (PayPal and Palantir) is backing a proposal to build a hi-tech “freedom city” on the island.
“All they need now is for the big-business-minded 47th President of the United States to smooth the path for their investments to be realised.”

      • PDJT is looking ahead to the EUs ultimate subjectcation to the Caliphate, and at that point we will need to be long gone from NATO.

        • Our sense here is the GC will use the EU econ collapse to seize territories and then we might have to consider a WWII style relink to Kremlin to keep Europe safe for all free humans

        • Note JD Vances comment about the UK becoming the first “truly Islamist country that will get a nuclear weapon”.

That imo shows clearly where JD Vances mind is on the subject of the US being tied to Europe by Nato … a setiment that by all indications is shared by Trump.

Echoing US VP JD Vance’s ‘UK first Muslim nation with nukes’ remarks, she said Britain could have an Islamist govt within the next 20 years.”

  5. Canada turncoat’d like they did way back when. We go it alone or the rest of the world moves on. Stay tuned #trumpnation

“Canada has decided to cut its 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) in exchange for lower tariffs on Canadian agricultural exports, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced. “

    • EVs are only viable in Canada for 7 months out of a year, or less.

Except as toys, Canadians whose lives don’t rotate around its major cities won’t buy EVs because in the outback they’re impractical, 12 months out of a year. Chinese cars sold in Canada will also have to meet the (U.S.) NHTSA safety, crash, and equipment standards. This means a billion dollar retooling for any ChiComCo that’s not already producing compliant cars and a significant bump at the sticker.

Carney is a commie and eventually forcing Canada to go electric would be a huge step toward Agenda30 and full-blown communist socialism…

  6. re: “The Government Inspector”, Nikolai Gogol, 1836

The Gogol comedy about corruption in Russia is alleged to only have seen light of day thanks to support from Tsar Nicholas I.

Yesterday a 1986 “Psychelic Furs” flashback moment took place as physically imposing IMF Director Mrs. Kristalina Georgieva of Bulgaria showed up in Kyiv attired in a loud pink business jacket. Its quiet paisley pattern perhaps harkens back to the ancient Persian symbol of divine energy. The Ukraine President posted a video clip of his warm welcome accorded the manager of his purse strings.

“Reuters” respectfully reported on the IMF hoops that the Ukrainian troupe will have to jump through to obtain a next scheduled $8 billion IMF funding tranche. Separately, single source Russian and Bulgarian media platforms claim that Ukraine missed a $170+ million payment payable to the IMF last Monday on January 12th.

It is understood from the public domain that Director Georgieva will next meet the Pope before proceeding to Davos for the annual WEF chinwag in Davos.

  10. (“I did something highly unusual today. Slept in until a few minutes before 5 A.M.”)

I’ll do that tomorrow.. long day here..the wife had ortho doctors visits for the mobility from her last stroke and I worked all night..tired.. good thing is all the joints are good..so some prosthetics and therapy will work ok…
anyway its been a long day..

  11. (“here’s something useful: We went shopping for the $3 dinner—and actually found it. A piece of chicken, corn tortilla, and some broccoli doesn’t sound bad. Especially with a tumbler of two-buck Chuck.”)

lol.. after the orthopedic center visit.. the wife asked if we could go out to eat.. it was wonderful.. all you can eat salad bar some great clam chowder and fried chicken mashed potatoes and vegetable for thirty dollars.. not a three dollar meal but actually about the same price of a fast food burger place.. some of the best tasting cold cottage cheese..something I like.. it was a good rare meal out dining..pleasant company a nice place to eat..reminded me of the can man.the guy that lived in A dumpster… this was the same restaurant that the police would take him there for a breakfast years ago..it was funny listening to him tell the story..the officers would see his walker or wheelchair by the dumpster..bang on it and say..can man are you in there.. then take him out for breakfast ..that’s one reason why I like Wal-Mart.. you would be shocked at how many live in cars at the Wal-Mart parking lot..the one guy he retired from thirty years of military service..only to discover over ten of those years his company was out sourced to the alphabet.. and he couldn’t get his retirement.. he went to the senators office and they put their best man ever to work on it.. after five years he lost his house lived in A storage shed till the booted him out then in his car.. he stayed with us for a while in the fifty below weather..I told him..pack your sleeping bag and go to that best man ever office and park your butt in their or invite the asshole to stay a few j guts in your car..sadly he had a stroke and died..they found him a week later in the summer heat..but Wal-Mart would let him bathe and even gave him discarded food in A gesture of humanity..if we had had another room he would have stayed with us..

    • Odd,
only thing youse miss out on when TAD’d to alphabets’ is Reward-Ribbons/Honors-Medals. Since you were never really “there”, cant be awarded medals for bravery and what notz. Never heard of anyone who served (good conduct) Active duty not getting there retirement. Just the opposite occurs if youse later take an official government job(Federal) in medical corps (HHS/NIH..) and several others.
Even on the State level, at least in my state, they used to let Buy Ure Military Retirement Years Credited into new/current state Pension program.
End result – 2 Pensions – one from corporate “duty” at large Japanese firm and one from when state conservation LEO years. Corporate also featured a lucrative 401k, at least lucrative after my employer was acquired by ginormous Japanese concern, which was of course flipped into selfdirected IRA.

Betcha something else was going on wit Ure example, as very close knit community that would have sussed out any reneging of promised retirement package.

      • Yah.. it was a really sad thing..the social worker that I worked with at the VA had several that she was trying to get them their retirments.. she got him medical but was fighting an uphill battle..his rates were posted but none of his deployments were in his records..I volunteered getting him a rent by month room at one of the two motels that offered rooms by the month.. but his pride wouldn’t allow him to accept it.. he spent January and February sleeping on our couch..
the only memory of him we still have is a photo of him in his marine uniform on the wall..
I of course will NOT vote for that senator ever again.. you’d be surprised.. its like the can man that lived in A dumpster.. he had serious PTSD from the Korean war…( the 4th. of July is not a day to celebrate) we’ve had guys bars are themselves in the bedroom hide in shower stalls etc.they are the forgotten ones.. you’ll see stories on the evening news once in A while but seriously no one pays any attention ..you’ll see them living under bridges or in cardboard boxes..

        https://youtu.be/chxQQzsO-zY?si=fIzRRKmz69vy-i-T

Then..homeless elderly..one of our guys was a homeless gent of about 98 when he came into our home..when you watch the tv show Little house on the prairie.. he was at the first filming..when he started laughing..Michael came over asked him what was so dam funny..he said your doing it all wrong..he asked how would you know..he told Landon because I farmed with the same equipment..so he taught him how to use it.. he stayed with us until he was a hundred and three I believe..there wasn’t anyway he should have been left homeless.. he survived la ding on Omaha beach during d day and was one of the soldiers that liberated prison of war camps..he only talked about the French and how they loved to dance and eat cheese..never about the fly things..except twice every one was when his best friend was blown in half while crawling through the mud..and during a movie of the camps..he said they didn’t look like that..

The thing is.. its not visible.. just a story about those worthless leeches of society.. I’ve seen ut up front the different level of society when we went on a ten day vacation to a gated community neighborhood and the reality of my life is not visible..it just doesn’t exist in that world..I can tell you I didn’t want to leave..no stress at all.. except for the geese that the dag can’t didn’t know what in the he’ll are those critters.. but heck there was a vineyard every ten miles..let me tell you that was gods country.. the family that we stayed at..golden parachute and his co pay was one fifth of mine same with medications..how in the hell does that work lol lol.. a different world..

      • Baracade not bars..lol lol.. the one that did that in the bedroom..he piled boxes against the door and hid in the closet..the day later I got in the door and he gave me this huge hug and said..I’m glad you survived..
our engineer..had several degrees from some pretty prestigious colleges..he was the man.. designed deep water oil drilling platforms.. Katrina took his home and property.. the insurance industry gave him something like a penny on the dollar..( you know from some of my rantings just what I feel about those crooks) then a horrific explosion on A platform that dumped oil into the gulf and many died..he had to give testimony and he told the truth.. was black balled and homeless..his car broke down and he had a heart attack..came to our spare bedroom..I tried to get him back to his family but..once he lost his level in life..they didn’t want anything to do with him because he no longer was worth anything.he was probably the saddest .. he couldn’t accept that his life that once was on another tier of society had dropped near the bottom and he had to live in a poor boys spare bedroom and only stayed with us two years before I had to let him go…oh shit I could tell you stories of the people that have crossed our path all day lng..I can’t tell you how many sets of tires I’ve donated to single moms or how many tanks of gas I’ve pumped..what’s funny is I’m on A bottom tier of the pyramid..But like those on tiers above mine I don’t have a clue what those in tiers below ours is like..
take the virls..they’ve told me stories of their lives in the ghetto of Seattle that s horrifying.. no ten year old should have the concerns that they do..
I asked the boss..should we open the bedroom for them.. sadly we would have adopt the parents to which with our present while prices are escalating and income isn’t situation we just couldn’t do it financially..
we have to think about us right now..

      • A good friend of mine from Canada gave me some good advice when I was talking about getting the girls into the safe zone..he said at the present I’ve done my part.. now take care of the wife and yourself..of course. that we real wisdom.. he was absolutely right..I’m not a spring chicken anymore and with our present situation.. I’d be putting more stress on..

      • The truly sad part.. is the reality of the tiers on the pyramid below those on levels above..is to those on those levels makes the stories f the bottom levels sound unbelievable.. it can’t be true..life isn’t like that..like me of the guys that’s crossed my path.. seen him riding.. ok get this..a unicycle through snow trying g to get to his job..his reality was they could only afford one small jar of peanut butter per two weeks.. their cat would. The hell is matta wit Cargill ? Didnt they used to run this area of the country at some point ?

      http://www.cargill.com

      • That’s adorable…

You think Cargill is immune to paying low, under the table wages?

Cargill was one of the first DEI/PC corporations in the U.S.

        That shit costs money…

“In 2003, Cargill’s earnings surpass $US 1 billion for the first time, and its global giving exceeds $US 22 million. The company establishes major partnerships in addressing global hunger and creates broader support systems for colleagues with disabilities, and Latino and LGBTQIA+ Cargill employees. It strengthens sustainability too, joining the Chicago Climate Exchange and setting its first energy efficiency goal”

“Didnt they used to run this area of the country at some point ?”

They still do. That is undoubtedly a huge contributor to the problems of the Twin Cities…

  12. Tom Homan says he’s creating a Database for every Criminal who is arrested interfering in ICE Operations, and will be Broadcasting their Names and Faces on Television

“We’re gonna let their employers, their neighbors, their schools know who they are — these people say they’re taking time off work to protest, I bet you a lot of them are calling in sick.”

    • Aspirin a day (baby) … I believe in it even if the medical profession no longer does.

Yes … the British National Institute of Health early in the Covid event noted that those who had been taking aspirin daily had virtually no deaths if they caught Covid, but would the US NIH or Dr. Fauci and crowd release that information to the US press? Nope!!

The US press did everything it could to surpress the REAL medical news about infection by age /patient existing health condition /and other treatments besides the vaccine that the British NIH was coming up with wrt Covid …. because it went AGAINST what the Biden Administration was SELLING – which was NOT health but government CONTROL of the press and the population.

Disagree with the “PARTY PROPAGANDA LINE” and you could, many were, FIRED.

      • NHS is one of my “secret sauce” sites. NIH and CDC are (currently) allowed to lie, either by untruth or omission. (Hopefully RFK will eventually fix this.) One of the few good things about UK medical law is, at least to date, the NHS is not allowed either. They don’t have to release data, but if they do, it’ll be legit…
