Reality Beating: Data, Inflation. and Holiday Musings

OK, we have to begin with the data roll today.  Because there is a ton of it. And being a workaholic, I always feel like I need to tell you something factual and/or useful before launching into one-liners.  Which I call “Stand Up News.”

Work with me here: Starting with part two of the Employment Trifecta.  This morning it’s the Challenger Job Cut numbers.

August Job Cuts Up 58% compared to July’s 33,429 cuts. It is down 38% from the 85,979 layoff plans announced in the same month last year, and marks the lowest August total since 2022.

Tomorrow the Federal numbers – the last job nag of the week  – shows up.  I’m already dreaming about “horizontal engineering.”

Reverie ruined, on to the second data point is the UI Filings

“LOWEST AUGUST SINCE 2022; HIRING PLANS UP 37% OVER LAST YEAR – U.S.-based employers announced 52,881 job cuts in August, up 58% from the 33,429 cuts announced in July. Hold up there, because we’re on short – final into Labor Day.  Once upon a time (in the paleo era of economics) “productivity” was THE holy grail.  In today’s work, how many tokens and how many machine cycles (or parts can be squeezed from an injection part mold) seems to be the real/actual.  The rest of jawboning and convincing the sheep they can “eat paper” and Secret Numbers.

Speaking of which BTC was rolling $77,600 ish at click-time.

Bacon, eggs, and flash-fried Yukon Golds are calling, so time to flip the switch.

News Compressor: ON

No flooding to speak of (*but no glaciers either, come to think of it). The remnant of topically depressing Edouard sat over East Texas where we’re still drier than an alkie three days off the sauce.  The tropical cyclone trash lingers. So does drought:

The other “wet spot”? Nepal is the MSM disaster fetish of the week.  People are dead and no amount of coverage will change that. (We’d mention decorum but they have to sell ads…)

The U.S.–Iran shooting cycle remains the dominant geopolitical risk, but oil is backing off its latest spike rather than confirming an immediate runaway escalation. Iran says Tuesday night’s U.S. strikes killed eight people and wounded 108, while Washington says it hit air-defense, radar, maritime, mine-laying and communications targets; casualty claims from both sides remain partly contested. Brent eased; some markets are trying for a PLDR (Pre-Labor Day Rally).

U.S.-friendly Pacific leaders are trying to turn concern over China’s July ballistic-missile test into a collective regional position. Blah-blah-blah.  Taiwan and chips, oil and exports – that’s the real Pacific pitch deck.  Oh, and look here: Taiwan’s cabinet proposed another $4.6 billion in defense spending, including anti-ballistic missiles, coastal drones and unmanned attack boats. Hardening rapidly. Tough love?

Related: China announced a five-year plan to support small and midsize firms with employment, technology and venture-capital measures. Ure is dense so I need to ask: “Is that code for taking Taiwan?”

Another global central-bank signal just turned hawkish. Bank of Canada held at 2.25%.  Early US Hike odds are down to 62.4% this morning.

Inside Pages

Middle East markets warming led by Dubai, as strong UAE and Saudi growth data temporarily outweighed conflict anxiety.

Japanese investors sold foreign bonds for a second straight week as domestic inflation and higher Japanese yields made overseas debt less attractive. Capital flows turning inward. Nikkei 64,214 overnight but the real hit was the previous session.

Germany’s IfW and Ifo institutes both raised 2026 growth forecasts as fiscal spending and improving industrial activity offset some of the energy shock. Improving. Euro-zone business growth held steady in August, although services momentum softened.  Watch the EU economy: Russia war could be a stimulus and gov-powers package.

India has stalled a proposed Alipay+ connection into its instant-payments network over national-security and data concerns. Digital decoupling widening.
India’s banking system is sitting on a record liquidity surplus after a huge inflow of dollar deposits, giving the RBI more currency-defense firepower but also creating a sterilization problem.

New York City imposed a one-year moratorium on most public elementary and middle school students using AI tools. Apparently, like AI, humans need training, you think?

OpenAI told lawmakers it is developing automated shutdown capabilities for AI tools that display dangerous behavior.

Meanwhile, we’re “way’mo interested” in Tesla preparing an Austin event around its purpose-built Cybercab robotaxi platform.

Lost in Space Dept: NOAA currently shows an R1 minor radio blackout, while its CCOR-1 white-light coronagraph imagery is degraded even though running-difference imagery remains usable. Minor space-weather impact, instrumentation partly impaired.

96 Hour News Outlook

Weekend at WW III?  Hormuz-shipping or sanctions development occurs before the conflict settles into a durable lull.

Perspective:

China now has a small industry of “tech pilgrimage” tours in which foreign executives and investors pay thousands of dollars to tour robotics, AI and EV factories to see the country’s scale-up machine firsthand.  Go ahead, say it: “We could have been a contender…”

But no, the free lunch got us again.

Passings: 

Gloria Steinem, legendary feminist and activist, dead at 92. Led women’s rights — but that meant more labor. Did that drive down quality of life and unit labor pay?  We could have a long discussion about whether “putting on the yoke” was a good deal, or not.  Which tees up…

Around the Ranch: Labor Delusions

All you need to know about labor, to borrow from Mark Twain’s research, is to know it’s really just “anything you don’t really want to do.“

If I sometimes give you the idea that I have “worked” for a living, that’s an error on my part.  I’ve dedicated my whole life to angling new ways to get paid while having fun.

Here’s today’s news flash: As I have matured (kicking and screaming) it has been revealed to me that too much of a good thing is bad.

  • Sex (consenting adults) is fun/enjoyable.  But monetized it turns into sexual addiction and human trafficking.
  • Then there’s Ure’s Commercial Fishing Paradox.  Something like 76 percent of the country enjoys going fishing. But monetized far enough, it turns into dangerous Bering Sea fishing and crabbing.
  • Even a nice holiday bike ride sounds good on paper, but again – if monetized by pulling a rickshaw in Asia somewhere, the “fun limit fails.”

So that’s the mental focus this weekend: How come more isn’t always better?

I’ll be the guy tripping over it in the shop this weekend. Too many tools and not enough bench space. Turns out that “fun” has practical limits and I think there’s a key to unlocking The Simulation in there somewhere.

Labor Day Lie?

It’s not that Labor Day is a lie, specifically.  More like a typical American Half-Truth.  One category America still dominates.

To prove it, besides being “Labor Day” Monday is also known for being:

  • National Beer Lover’s Day
  • National Salami Day  (Our usual warnings about how too much beer may impact your salami’s performance apply.)
  • National Acorn Squash Day  (No listing for B-corn Day.)
  • National Grateful Patient Day  (Well, which are you?)
  • National Feel the Love Day  (To whom?)
  • National Neither Snow Nor Rain Day (postal workers)
  • Grandma Moses Day
  • Mouthguard Day (first Monday in September – watch your mouth?)
  • International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies (UN, Biden, anti-BBQ types)
  • World Duchenne Awareness Day.  If you skipped pre-med, Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a rare, inherited muscle-wasting disease.
  • Still’s Disease Awareness Day
  • 907 Day (Alaska area-code day)  Which is  big of them.
  • And best of all, Monday Texas Energy Savings Day.

Our plans include chilling and (out of respect for decorum) I won’t joke about beer or my salami.

Which is just bologna, anyway. Because we missed observing it on October 24th.

Banks, post offices, federal offices, and stock markets (and us) are closed.

I’m reminded of a cartoon this cub reporter noticed, pinned to the corkboard in a county worker’s cubicle somewhere in the Seattle-King County Courthouse in the mid-seventies. “The harder I work, the behinder I get.”  Now, fifty-odd years on, the National Debt disaster is proving it true.

The yoke’s on us.

      The following is gathered from a February 3, 2010 issue of “Hemmings”, Wikipedia, and ChatGPT.

      boy this is gonna ruffle some back hairs… my Acupuncturist and his brother…
      one is from Taiwan one is from Beijing.. the parents live in one country the grandparents and brother live in the other.. neither has a fear of the other country and they travel back and forth between the two.. sometimes the headlines make everything sound like a monster movie — “Jason took Manhattan, so why shouldn’t China take Taiwan?” — but real life isn’t built out of those stories. I look at my acupuncturist and his family and see something completely different. The one brother from Taiwan, the other one from Beijing, parents in one place, grandparents in the other, and they travel back and forth like it’s nothing. No fear, no drama, just family stretched across a narrow piece of water.

      Taiwan and mainland China are close the way Cuba and the U.S. are close — you can practically feel the other shore. Big countries always cast a shadow over their neighbors, but the people living there don’t walk around thinking in headlines. They think in gardens, markets, family dinners, and plane tickets.

      And honestly, that’s what I think about too and form my opinion off of. I’d love to see the water gardens and the Great Wall, the greenscaping in Taiwan, and the old coffee plantations in Cuba. All that beauty sitting behind the noise of modern politics. Sometimes you have to look past the politics and remember the world is full of wonderful places worth walking through and wonderful populations and their lifestyle.. I believe we are to far from Taiwan to be the big brother they need and Cuba is to far from China for China to be their big brother and prtector…

    I would argue that adding a bit of money or other valuable consideration can turn a reluctant adult into an enthusiastically consenting one!

    It turns bad when nonconsensual force or coercion is applied.

    • Hmm.. deep subject…People say sex is the world’s oldest profession, but the truth is much simpler….most human connections start with attraction, curiosity, or a mutual agreement… Sometimes it’s marrying for money, sometimes it’s seeing someone walk by and thinking, “Oh my, I gotta have me some of that.” That’s human nature. It’s not new, and it’s not mysterious.

      But love — real love — is something way different. I was taught the love is when it goes beyond the physical…. When two people share a direction, a purpose, a commitment. I’ve seen men who only cared about the physical walk away the moment life got hard…in a moments notice our looks can be gone our lives destroyed by physical ailments or poverty.. a controlling and violent mate..( my wife suffered through that with her ex).. And I’ve seen men like my two friends stand by their wives through devastating illness. That’s the difference between attraction and devotion. One fades. The other stays…

      Where things turn dark is when consent disappears….
      Human trafficking isn’t about sex — it’s about force, coercion, and control. It’s when someone is pushed, threatened, or manipulated into providing something they didn’t freely choose… Traffickers don’t offer love; they offer false security, false opportunity, and false escape from poverty. It’s exploitation wearing a friendly mask.

      And stopping trafficking is not simple. It’s tied to poverty, desperation, and criminal networks — the same forces that make drug cartels hard to eliminate. People fall into these systems because they’re vulnerable, not because they’re immoral…. and they manipulate and force the things that human nature desire and seek..

      Some argue that regulation and oversight reduce harm by taking power away from the dark corners where coercion thrives. Others argue that regulation alone can’t erase exploitation which is true..in dire poverty you will do anything to lift yourself up..the same with day labor..ive scooped manure caught chickens..scooped hot dirt from a spilled cooling tank at a nuclear power plant and steam cleaned blood tanks that traveled through the desert empty..( nasty job..mike row from dirtiest jobs wouldn’t touch that one lol). It’s a complicated issue, and people disagree strongly — but the core truth remains… consent is the dividing line between human connection and human harm… giving them the option of choice takes the power away from the index forcing and coercion..

  7. I for one, am glad to see August go away. Not a very good month around here.
    Car was stolen – she still hasn’t chosen a replacement. Tried to get her interested in a Lexus 350 – two door, stick shift, AWD, less than a thousand miles on it.., “Isn’t that a rich person’s car?” So, I guess she’s not going for it. I’m not going to push it, it’s her car.
    About a week after that she dropped her brand new cell phone in the carport.., it landed perfectly on one corner – shattered the glass and turned it useless. Come to find out she didn’t get the damage insurance – so, another out-of-pocket expenses.
    Lost the key to the mail box – damn if I know where it went. It’s on a two foot lanyard. The local locksmith will not touch mailboxes., so.., after three days of looking for the key I got fed up, grabbed the drill and the best bit and drilled that sucker out.., new lock on the way.
    Refrigerator went out., but we didn’t notice it until two days later. Managed to get most of the meat into the chest freezer., [ it is stuffed ! ] and a lot of other items into coolers.., new refrig on the way.., $600 dollars off, Labor Day special – hopefully.., Saturday / Sunday. Being in the boonies makes delivery dates rather dicey.
    Couple of other minor annoyances [ like living in a smoker – from the Little Giant Fire ] that managed to mess-up ‘Best laid plans’.., yeah, I am glad August has slipped on by.

      • Oh lord, what a memory that is. The restaurant was named ‘Auntie Pasto’s’. I watched the cook make my eggplant parmigiana once. Half a quart of heavy cream into the sauce! Sadly when I developed diverticulitis and lost ten inches of my colon I learned that eggplant is bad for the colon, so I cannot eat it any more.

    British and Canadian Pub Mushrooms

    so break out your Bib and lets get started…
    what you need..
    2 cups sliced mushrooms (button …)
    2 tbsp butter ( and olive oil… butter browns giving it that beautiful color..start with butter then add a tbsp of EVOO )
    1 tbsp flour ( or…corn starch)
    1 onion diced and sliced
    1 clove garlic, minced (optional but oh so good)
    1/2 cup heavy cream or whole milk ( cream )
    1–2 tsp Worcestershire sauce ( little splash)
    1/4 tsp white pepper( to taste )
    Salt to taste salt
    1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (optional)
    1/2 cup beef stock (or veg stock if you prefer)

    “Sauté mushrooms onions garlic in butter + oil until they release moisture and start browning.
    Add onion and cook until soft.
    Add garlic and stir for 30 seconds.( I put garlic in while frying the onions)
    Sprinkle flour over everything — stir to coat.
    Pour in beef stock stirring until thick.
    Add Worcestershire, pepper, and optional stout/wine.
    Simmer until it becomes thick, glossy, and gravy consistency….

    serve over biscuits,potatoes or toast..pub style is over toast cut diagonally….

    this also can be served over a Butter Burger…( oh my god.. its just like the Oreo fluff( except I don’t eat oreos..great cookie it was a great company when the colonel owned it… my father was a delivery boy for the biscuit company and I had maybe one or two Oreos to many..I get sick to my stomach just viewing the package..)

    for that..

    1 small package of Oreos
    1/2 cup whole milk
    2 packages of vanilla pudding..( yumm)
    1 tbsp vanilla extract
    8 ounces of cream cheese
    2 large tubs of cool whip topping..

    place the 1/2 cup milk in a bowel
    mix in the vanilla cream cheese…once the cream cheese is blended in..
    add one of the packages of instant vanilla pudding fold in half of the package of Oreos ( crushed.. I use my ninja food processor with dough hook)…( you can add a little powdered sugar to the milk cream cheese..but seriously its not needed)
    now fold in one tub of whipped cream then the second package of pudding and whipped cream… (mix well then taste to make sure it needs any thing..)
    place in fridge ( I sometimes use two packages of cream cheese )

    now my little lady loves cheese cake… so how about an Oreo cheese cake…

    2 packages cream cheese (softened)
    1 package vanilla pudding (not two — two makes it too loose)
    1/2 cup milk
    1 tbsp vanilla extract
    1 tub Cool Whip (not two — two makes it mousse-like)
    Fold in crushed Oreos
    1/2 cup powdered sugar
    1 tbsp cornstarch (yes, it works cold with pudding)
    This tightens the structure without changing the flavor.
    This gives you a firmer, sliceable cheesecake body….oh yes its screaming for me already..lol

    the crust…

    11/2 cups crushed Oreos (no filling removed)
    4 tbsp melted butter
    Press into a spring form pan

    Chill 10 minute s to an hour the one I made last night the crust stayed in the fridge two hours..

    now for both of these take the remaining half package of Oreos and fold in for the cheese cake pudding.. on the cheesecake sprinkle crushed on top and Oreos around the edge.. take a frosting bag make a decorative edge then the cookies..
    put in fridge over night…to set up..

    so much better than watching the evil in the mainstream news or the slice and dice mainstream network programming where sociopathic activities is glorified for entertainment…..hey I know flip channel to the hallmark channel..great programming even if every scene is in a McMansion..

  11. Shoot I forgot the butter burger….. five lashes of a cooked noodle….

    2 lbs ground beef (80/20 for juiciness)
    4 tbsp cold salted butter (cut into small cubes)
    1 tsp salt ( to taste)
    1/2 tsp black or white pepper ( I also add 1 tbsp burger magic)
    4 burger buns
    2 tbsp butter for toasting buns ( give or take..)
    Optional but not needed onions sautéed in butter (pub style)

    Gently mix the ground beef with salt and pepper. Form 4 loose patties and press 3–4 small cubes of cold butter into the center of each patty, then fold the meat around them.
    Heat the grill Preheat grill to medium-high heat (about 400–450°F).
    Grill the burgers Place patties on the grill and cook 4–5 minutes per side. As they cook, the butter melts inside, basting the meat from within.
    Toast the buns Butter the buns and toast them on the grill until golden.
    toast the buns serve with grilled onions on top and a slave of cheese…your choice I like swiss..Or romano..

    now I miss x it in the ninja food processor before forming the patties..
    this is where you can serve your Pattie smothered in the mushroom gravy over the open bun..mashed potatoes or Texas toast..if your shy cash..one bun can be shared one half for each.. if your really strapped.. Add more bread and an egg as in meatloaf style butter burger..

        my grandson and his fiancee.. are vegan and drink nut milk..walking in Sams club..they have a nut milk maker..
        they live a couple hundred miles fro G..once she got her PHd she took a job there..
        they asked my opinion on marriage..well marriage license originally was a daily of ownership for taxation purposes.. but then that’s my view..they have been together for ten years in my thought they are husband and wife..

    • (Sacrilege warning!) Local burger place was famous for it’s tasty burgers of ‘secret formula’. Later he gave away the recipe. Mix 1lb ground beef with 1/4 lb of SPAM (!) Mix thoroughly. The added pork was the ‘secret flavor’.

      • Lol lol…we had a place locally that was famous in our area for their Coney dogs smothered in delicious chili…years after they closed we were talking about great places to eat that are long gone..
        I learned that the secret ingredient in his chili…dog food…

        the other place was a Chinese place and all the chicken meals were..CAT…..

        lol lol lol…. Sometimes its best to not know.. took a girl on a date in china town..she found out they served her a puppy..needless to say..the night didn’t end well..

  14. Watched a great short video out of Japan., from one week ago.

    A rather rude-dude viciously pushed a humanoid robot out the way so he could walk by – the ‘android’ did not like that very much – turned back around and beat the essential oils right out of the guy. It was brutal! The guy collapsed, unconscious and bleeding.

    And the hundred or so people standing around just stood there and watched. Not a thing they could do. It happened really fast.

    When the jerk fell the robot stood over him for a second, I thought it was going to stomp the guy., but then slowly walked away.

    Now., the question: Who gets charged for aggravated assault with intent ? The ‘bot with no moral convictions., or the owner/developer?

    I believe this is the first time I have seen a humanoid ‘bot attack someone – with obvious intent to do damage. “Fascinating.”

  18. News yesterday. They have made an arrest in the Chelan Hills Fire that took out over a hundred structures – 54 houses – and caused one death.
    Arrested is an 18 year old from Kent – nearly four hours away – who drove his daddy’s pick-up to the Chelan area with the expressed intent to set-off fireworks from the back of the truck. Fire works are illegal around here. He now can be charged with negligent homicide. The $50,000 reward was ‘claimed’. Some one ratted the little shit out !

    Sadly the one death hits close to home. Ever since the fire broke out I have been trying to call a friend of mine – but his cell phone never rang. I assumed he was the one killed.., and it was announced along with the arrest that my friend was the one killed in the fire.
    Looks as though he was driving too fast to get out of the fire, slid off the road and crashed.., fire then consumed his truck.
    I have known Rob for many years – we first met at a stop light.., me on my ’49 Harley and he pulled up along-side on his ’48. We rode together many times. [ May was the last time.] Made quite a lot of noise when we pulled in somewhere for an emergency cheeseburger.
    In an odd little fact – Rob just recently retired as the senior electrician for the data center that ‘G2’ current works. He had just bought a nice fishing boat and planned on doing ‘nothing’. “Just live”.

    It does not look good for Kauai nor Niihau with a glancing blow at best. All depends on the turn on Saturday. One model even has the eye passing between Kauai and Oahu islands. Old timers here are having nightmares of Hurricane Iniki in 1992. We wait. We watch.
