Early this morning (like is 5 AM early for an attorney to call?) my consigliere was on the line.  “Seen the Futures?  Hearing reports that Biden and Harris were both rushed to the WH about 10:30 PM last night...”

Yeah, well that is not likely related to the pending budget debacle which does threaten to start shuttering some (non-essential) government operations as early as tonight.

But no, we don’t know what specifically has moved on the chessboard, but our leading prospects are Ukraine may get it’s nuclear showdown with Russia, Israel will have had it with Iran running nuclear enrichment operations, or China could be massing resources on their coast because what better time  to move on Taiwan than over the Holidays?

White House in crisis? Biden and Harris ‘cancel Christmas trips and rush back’ amid speculations of emergency.

Then there were the stock futures.  The Dow was down about 170, the S&P was down almost 50, but the Big One – the NASDAQ – was down 273.  And that tells us the market is about to suffer a major change of investment fads as money is streaming out of the “Hot” A.I. and the Magnificent Seven.  We expect quite the weekend.

But, like we have been writing for almost two months now, the Slaughter of the Elves could be set for a re-run this season.  No “ho ho’s” about it.  With two and a half hours to the open, our “lunch money” account is sneaking up on another four-figure gain.

All as Bitcoin is down into the $93,000 range.  Well, we did tell you how that would end, too, right?

Not in DC?

Rumors of presidential late-night movements are usually interesting to unwrap.  But the assessment here is that whatever is going on in DC is likely not related to Trump-backed government spending deal fails in House vote.  Brinkmanship is an old-school game.

On the other hand, word that Biden Expected to See Pope on Last Overseas Trip of Presidency: Report might be a useful data point. Why would a president leave just before the hand-off?  I know, “confessional?” has to be on the table, sure.

The mind races, though: What would be so damned important than Harris and Biden ran back to the White House.  To do actual work?  On what, then? US forces more than doubled in Syria before Assad’s fall, Pentagon says,  but that’s been in play for several weeks.  So, set that aside.

How about reports that Putin and Trump might wind down the war in Eastern Europe? Putin says Russia is ready to compromise with Trump on Ukraine war? Is Biden and the neocon cast of clowns still trying to light off WW III so Trump will have an economic collapse AND a world war to cope with?

Russia launches massive missile strike on Kyiv following Putin’s ‘duel’ . threat. Could it all be big enough to cause the failure of Ukraine? Is it having to do with whether NATO goes into the war in force? That could be fugly.

Or, could it be something out of left field? Could they be laying in plans for the Second Pandemic with Bird Flu?  You know California this week laid some of the groundwork declaring an “emergency” and now we’re tracking

Groundwork stories are popping now: Highly pathogenic avian influenza detected in Nebraska poultry And then toss in the Minnesota officials monitoring human case of bird flu in Wisconsin closely.  Could be, maybe.  But that wouldn’t get people coming in late.

Whatever it was (if anything, maybe the initial reports were wrong?) what couldn’t wait until morning to set a course of action?

No, our best guesses are likely to be wrong, so instead we will just patiently wait for events to unfold.

Although, my consigliere  did mention Grover’s Mill, New Jersey.

Depends how you look at it.  The feds may not have a clue since they seem unable to sort the wheat from the chaff on this: FAA drone ban hits New Jersey, but will it put an end to UAP hysteria?

At the Ranch: Three Hour Work Days

A reminder that after the first of the year, we will be phasing down the UrbanSurvival daily reports and moving over to the Peoplenomics.com site for new content.  (Urban is for sale by the way – I’m inside 90 from 76 and I’ve decided to do more with fewer words.)

My personal critique for the year found that I still “give away too much” so the $40 per year Peoplenomics side will continue to be where new books and all the charts and so forth will reside.

Penciled it out and since age 16 when (with school) I was working 50 hours a week, 60-years of that gets me to within spitting distance of a million hours working in my lifetime.

Much more to come – and new mountains to climb, but more on that in ShopTalk Sunday, so drop by then.

For now, off to pick up groceries, a swing by the liquor store, and then yard work.  Those leaves, polite as I have been, are still refusing to get up and quietly move out into the woods.  (I’ll show them…I’m getting gasoline for the power tools, by God…)

    • Interesting explanation, though I’ve heard most of it before. What’s missing is the detail. With a conventional computer, we can define and detail the electronics necessary to create boolean functions – AND, OR, NOT, and then show connectivity to create XOR, and the basic adder logic. Mathematically, it’s straightforward to show every arithmetic operation can be handled by adder hardware, given time. What’s missing from quantum computer explanations is even a single hardware implementation detailed to the point that a competent person could build one to manage even one qubit, and how it would maintain quantum superposition, entanglement, or any other attribute through the system to the point that it could be collapsed into useful information. IMHO, this level of detail is being obfuscated deliberately or otherwise, such that an outsider can’t truly grok the process at the hardware level.

    Observation: the wimmin here are tough. E2’s MIL (local Grandma) showed up Wednesday eve just to hug the Grandling. This woman is confined to a wheelchair but meets life head on. Her fellows (err, female Minnesotans) were out running giant snowblowers -or- shoveling. I mentioned this to my Bride and got *the look* so don’t expect much.

    E2’s bride is remote working today so I am off duty. Hmm. What to do? Guess I’ll push snow so my boy doesn’t have to on return tonight. Between the two of us we managed to clear about half his driveway … or, we could fix _his_ ginormous snowblower? Nah. Carb cleaner weekend ahead.

    Don’t be glum folks. The Veep had to remain in Washington should there be a tie in the Senate. (*) Brandon probably needed to be where there’s a white room though it’s mostly to string along surrogates in a safe spot. Otherwise, who’s large and in charge?

  11. This beautiful morning is day three with no downpour rain. Wind has shifted to the South and a welcome cool breeze comes with it. Cool? A day before official summer when it is always spoken of as being the ‘hot rain’ season? Is Valentina Zharkova and the GSM group right in saying we will be looking for blankets and firewood and trying to figure out how to eat soon? Don’t get me wrong, it has been very warm some days leading up to now, but the local vibe is ‘this is strange’… looking for hoodies.
    Still no starships down here. Probably because there aren’t sufficient humans to impress. We are in the middle of a vast ocean expanse even if it doesn’t feel like it because there is a small island close by. When it’s hundreds of sea miles to the next significant dirt, you feel really small and insignificant.
    As an owner of an all electric craft I would never recommend it. It all works fine for what it is, but there is no under power range unless your ship is full of batteries. You can have all the solar you want but the storage is the issue for cloudy or night conditions. Range anxiety is real. You go, George, and get that gasoline in storage because common sense is on your side.
    Perhaps the saving grace will be the continued collapse of the political world that returns us all to local determination WITHOUT control. If those that rule fall aside and once again become those who choose to serve, we may be saved. Belgium hasn’t had a true government for six years. France entire cabinet has resigned, Germany is expecting VW to bankrupt and there they have only 96 hours to sort it out before it’s over… the government wouldn’t be far behind if that happens. And our 51st state up north is soon to join the rush to potential freedom. China is in big trouble, factories closing, huge unemployment, grumbling billions. Ukraine is just asking for Kiev to be Hazel’d…
    Oh… what’s that I hear in the sunrise? Roosters? And the sun is making the palms glisten and sparkle. It’s ‘off-season’ now so the mooring field is empty, no zooming dinghies full of fat white people with 10K a week to spend dashing around having the island experience. Quiet. Getting ready to head to shore to walk to the beachside place where our sturdy Chilean masseuse lives to help her get her lagoon transport boat back in the water. The best barter ever.
    There is still lots of magic in the world where there are few smart phones, no 5G towers, and smiles and friendly greetings of human connection.
    Good boats are everywhere and so cheap now. Saw a killer deal (35K) on a NZ built 41′ tax paid into Fiji. Hundreds of tiny islands, plentiful food, nice people, risky challenging way to live but the reward level is off the chart.

  14. Vivek reduced the inane continuing resolution in congress to just 75 words, and all he did was change the termination date on the last CR. Of course, it took 75 words to do that. It still allows old pork, but eliminates any new stuff. Of course, congress won’t accept it because it’s not what they do. Look for middle of the night machinations to try to suck more taxpayer dollars for the insiders, possibly including that intolerable raise they tried to sneak in.

  15. Tom Brokaw called the WW2 generation, “The Greatest Generation.” I think that’s right.

    Their progeny became known as the “Boomers,” from baby boomers. And we shared much of the WW2 gen’s world view, since they brought us up somewhat tightly monitored for correct values. (Honesty, hard work, patriotism, etc.)

    You could say the boomers were the generation of the much-vaunted “Sixties.”

    The oldest of the WW2 gen are just now passing away — many are about a hundred years old. It’s natural and necessary for children to rebel against their parents, so Sixties kids were anathema to GG’s values to an extent. We bacame hippies — some of us.

    “Sociological Generations” seem to take about a decade (only) to shift, since then. Not twenty years, but about ten or so.

    The “Zeitgeist” of the “Seventies” was quite different. Consider politics, relegion, music, and fashion as weathervanes.

    The “Eighies” are yet another take on values; as are the “Nineties,” the “Naughts,” and the two century borderline gens. (Each has its own nifty name and letter — which I can never keep them all straight.)

    BUT

    Each decade seems unique in its tone and tenor — its “Zeitgeist.”

    Seems to me we’re zooming in on a new one: the “Twenty-Thirties.”

    I wonder what it will become known for.

    Renewal? Revision? The return of common sense? New Realsim? An all-new Madness?

    We’ll see,

  16. I agree with your consigliere …. Grover’s Mill New Jersey is a place to stay away from with all of these so called “Drones” about.

    Fell asleep on the couch while watching an old movie on TV a while back and when I woke up that name was stuck in my mind as THE PLACE to avoid if any “aliens” come a visiting. Must be why most of the drone activity seems to be concentrated in New Jersey … Something about “radio news reports” too, though that was confusing.

    • My only concern would be HOW HIGH above sea level is the “Hank Radio Station” … and … are you on the Slipping part of the island or the Rock Solid part of the island?

      Because of the lack of gasses in your volcano’s output the risk of a huge explosive type eruption (ala Santorini) is small … but a big EQ could shake loose that ALREADY SLIPPED corner of the Island (broke off during the 1974ish 7+ EQ). If that corner lets go and it splashes in the sea, and if you don’t go with it, the resulting Tsunami would be HUGE and would probably come way up into the hills of the rest of the Island (as well as devastating the rest of the entire chain).

      The Chinese lunch restaurant I used to eat at all the time until the owner retired 6 years ago had a HUGE painting on the wall of a tsunami over topping the Golden Gate Bridge!! (over topping it by a LOT) Couldn’t miss it, it dominated the entire eating area.

      • I know the volcano geology well after all my years here. I am north of the Kilauea East Rift Zone, north of where the southern shelf is slowly slipping into the sea. I rode out the 6.9 earthquake and massive eruption of 2018 well upwind of the vent. I’m at 300ft elevation and 2.2 miles inland. I am subject to downflows from certain areas upslope on the east rift, that last threatened in 2014. But eruptions don’t usually repeat the same area in recent history. I live on the lava flow of 1840. One can never say ‘never’ where a volcano is concerned, but I feel safe enough from the known geologic hazards.

    • We have been on Starlink for a year, and the only reason for putting in fiber is to reduce the monthly charge by 50 pct. Otgher than that, Starlink is reliable and has been a blessing compared to the geosat servi9ces which pale in real world comparison.
      Our idea of a “slow morning” for connectivity is 135 down, 12 up and very low latency….
