A Quirk in Physics, News Flows Slow, News Compression

This is a pre-holiday week. A lot of things we already think we know:

  • Markets are often chipper and higher ahead of time off.
  • Gas prices for the week sometimes hit lows by Tuesday. Tank up?
  • The weather usually changes once weekend plans are locked.
  • Traffic — road rage and all — will suck by Thursday, shifting toward insufferable.

This is all normal — in bounds for the logical mind.

The “Time Dilations” are more interesting.

If you have to work…

  • Time will slow down — taking forever — for Friday to arrive.
  • If you can’t weasel out with comp time Thursday, glaciers will melt faster than the minutes until noon.
  • Epochs and Ice Ages will come and go from noon to 3 PM.
  • Time “stands still” beginning at 3:37 PM.

And if you’re shopping? Good luck with that.

  • The last good steaks will be gone within five minutes of shelving.
  • The potato chips will all be tiny broken potato meal instead of chips.
  • The “fresh-baked” bread will magically be two days old by Friday.
  • And the beer and wine? Your picks will be gone.

Behind it all are the myths from media.

Secretly, though, other music — out around the edges — is letting reality bleed through.

And two weeks from now? Maybe you will sleep in; maybe not. But on my calendar, this is the last “regular” working Monday as I sashay toward de-working.

Not that I will stop doing anything. What will happen is that it will all become more random, and the weighting of priorities will change. The main thinking will be on the subscription side — Peoplenomics. I will put notes up here when PN is updated and leave this site up for historical reference.

Timber remains 24,839 acres and 21 percent contained. The combined Big Sur complex is past 33,000 acres. Not much actionable in it all. Mainstream is doing the 10-millionth rewrite of Tibet flooding — 903 if you’re a compulsive stiff-counter. That whole story is now distilled down to two words:

Tibet: 903.

Since we are planning to keep a “content beacon” going here in coming years, I think it’s time for a heart-to-heart on News Compression.

Philosophical Grounding

Do you worry about the asteroid Apophis smacking into Earth today? No?

Good. Because it is — for now — too far away to matter. And that’s the point when you read news. Two questions count:

Does it matter to me and mine?

And, if yes:

Is there anything I can do about it?

If no, skip it.

Going Deep into News Compression

News compression is not dumbing the world down. It is refusing to pay full retail for the same event sold seventeen times. Most of what fills a morning feed is not a new fact. It is a new headline wrapped around yesterday’s acreage, last week’s negotiation, or a wire story already confirmed.

Our 4 / 19 / 45 model exists for that reason: maybe four things that actually moved, a short inside page, and a hard cap on how many clusters you even bother to look at. If it did not change a number, a map, a schedule, or a risk you can act on, it is inventory, not intelligence.

The “news” time tax is worse than people admit. An hour of “staying informed” is often fifty minutes of repetition — and ads — and ten minutes of signal.

If you’re lucky.

Multiply that by seven days and you have given a whole workday to vendors whose product is arousal, not orientation or solutions.

Over-informed people are not wiser. They are delayed. They know the adjective on the fire but not whether the highway is open. They can recite both sides of a strike and still have not priced diesel or checked who is missing. That is not citizenship. That is unpaid shift work for the attention market.

Compression buys back the day by forcing a change test. What is different from the last snapshot? What happens in the next 12 to 96 hours? What do you do before breakfast? Vital Four, Outlook, Blink Lab — those are time disciplines dressed as a briefing. The rest of the stack is permitted only after the actionable layer is done.

If you cannot say the vector — new, worse, delayed, confirmed — you are not informed. You are soaking.

Hot froggies?

The people who look under-read and still make the right call are usually running a compressor, even if they never named it. They read less, they check official pages once, and they leave the commentary on the floor. Being overly informed is a consumption hobby. Being correctly informed is a short list and a clock.

Between elections, you can skip most politics and bank the time, too. We hang up on pollsters. What’s the point? That’s a big emotion machine. And if it’s not paying?

Well, then we’re not playing.

Oh, and don’t worry too much about that asteroid — Apophis.

Apophis is a useful reminder. A real object, a real close pass, a real date — and still, for this morning, mostly not actionable.

Apophis is currently journeying through its solar orbit and will make a historically close approach to Earth on April 13, 2029.

Distance in 2029: it will pass about 20,000 miles — 32,000 kilometers — above Earth’s surface, closer than geostationary communication satellites.

I’ve spent more than 58 years “chasing news” and concluded it all pretty much lumps with knowing the exact moment of your death in advance.

I’ve seen people worrying about their own mortality from their twenties on. But you know, in the end? They are still wasting what ought to have been an excellent ride here in Adventure Land Earth.

Don’t let “the news” waste time you could be enjoying the ride.  Do you remember the “world ends in 2012?”  Y2K, then?

      Exactly….. An overnight worker experiences all three — you work today, yesterday, and tomorrow all in the same shift. Time gets weird when you’re clocking in at midnight and clocking out at sunrise….. dark shades for windows…lol

      And as for all those “end of the world” dates — Y2K, 2012, the Mayan calendar — people forget the Mayans never said the world ends…. They said the calendar ends, meaning a change, not an explosion. But folks love drama more than nuance…. The bible and every prophecy gives us the warnings on what can happen if certain things move in that direction..they can’t give an actual date..I got a prediction..be careful hitting a nail with the hammer to ensure the nail you hit isn’t connected to a finger..it will hurt..

  3. I do not give investment advice. Trading options is not for the timid. But.., I was asked if I trade single-company stocks., not just indexes, or occasionally futures?
    The answer is yes., but with a caveat.
    My stock trades are with long expiration options. I currently have four long term options trades going. All four are single corporation stocks.
    Here is one I am currently ‘invested’ in.
    Corning [ NYSE: GLW ]
    The company is partnering with NVIDIA to build three advanced optical-manufacturing facilities in North Carolina and Texas. The project is expected to create more than 3,000 permanent jobs and expand Corning’s U.S. optical-manufacturing capacity tenfold.
    Corning, the New York-based company best known to many Americans for its kitchenware and smartphone glass, is ramping up optical-fiber production as the data-center buildout accelerates. Nearly 175 years after its founding, the company is supplying a critical piece of the infrastructure behind the AI boom, the glass connections linking the servers inside the facilities powering it.
    When I bought the long expiration options Corning was at $56 a share.., the stock is up, as of this morning, by 263%.
    Over this next year, as the buildout gets underway I expect the stock to increase at the same rate as more and more investors realize that without all the fiber optic cable a data center is virtually useless. [ Hint: Are there any other components that a data center absolutely needs to function ? Answer – Absolutely ! ]

    Should you do this ? Oh, hell no ! I spent over a week researching data center builds and imagining what components would be needed., and then researched Corning. It is simply an example of part of my trading [ betting ] platform. Does this answer your question?

    Diesel is the backbone of freight, agriculture, and construction. When diesel price rises, trucking companies pass those costs through to retailers, farmers pass them through to food distributors, and construction firms bake them into project bids. Even a modest diesel increase can ripple through supply chains because nearly every physical product in the U.S. economy spends at least part of its life on a diesel?powered truck.
    U.S. national retail diesel price is $5.65 as of August 24, 2026 per gallon, up from $4.86 last week and significantly higher than $3.58 a year ago, reflecting a 58.2% increase over the past year.
    – Just how much of this near 60% price increase has been factored into the inflation numbers ?
    – A local tradesman with a diesel powered truck must be taking it in the shorts – big time ! How are city bus companies dealing with the 60% increase in cost? Our local daily ferry, travelling the 54 miles up lake and back must be seriously loosing money – as the tourist numbers are at a multi-year low due to the heavy smoke from the Little Giant Fire that has settled into the lake valley.

    • The business model…the pyramid of price … The business model is simple from my perspective…. a pyramid of price….. When diesel goes up a buck, that cost climbs the whole pyramid — transport, distribution, warehouse, retail — and every layer adds its own markup…. By the time it reaches the shelf, that $1 increase has multiplied…. but did it create more.. or convince everyone to cut back or DIY it to maintain a quality of life..the grandson and his chocolate bar..

      Meanwhile as expenses rise and wages stay stagnant and hours get cut to “stabilize business costs” and protect the top tier. But it’s a dual edged sword…. Cutting labor means cutting customers’ ability to purchase anything…. People shorten trips, combine errands, skip non?essentials, and adjust for travel costs…. Less foot traffic means lower sales, which leads to more cuts, which leads to even less purchasing power….

      It’s not complicated. It’s the real economy — the one lived at ground level, not the one imagined in boardrooms..

      that’s the thing about civilizations collapsing — the top almost never sees it coming…. Not because they’re stupid, but because the system is built to keep them comfortable….What happens in my world is usually seen as oh how can that be… So when the bottom starts feeling the strain, the top is still living in yesterday’s stability….. By the time the warning signs reach their level, the damage has already been done and there’s no way to reverse it….
      Our current economic mess didn’t have to get this severe…. Jimmy Carter’s original plan — flat tax across the board, equal sacrifice, balanced budget, and controlled spending — would have forced the system to live within its means. Instead, Congress tossed the middle class under the wheels of the bus and opened the door to unlimited spending on police actions overseas.

      Then came the era of “too big to fail,” where failing industries were bailed out and executives who drove their companies into the ditch walked away with multi million?dollar bonuses… That’s not capitalism — that’s insulation the ostriches head in the sand ..or..a visual of congress in session…

      It protects the top while the bottom absorbs every shock.

      The truth is simple:
      If you don’t balance the books, the books eventually balance themselves — and they do it on the backs of the working class… at least for a while then we end up with Weimar.

      Most civilizations collapse the same way. The top never feels the early warning signs, so they assume everything is fine..statistics can be written to paint a rose colored glasses…. Meanwhile the bottom is already rationing trips, cutting purchases, losing hours, and watching prices climb the pyramid using plastic to keep the quality of life they are accustomed to… By the time the people in charge finally notice, the damage is already baked in and not reversible.

      Every society that fell — Rome, the Maya, Mesopotamia, Egypt — had leaders saying everything was fine right up to the moment it wasn’t. They were insulated by wealth, privilege, and distance from the daily grind…. They didn’t feel the rising fuel costs, the shrinking wages, the shortened trips, the empty shelves, or the quiet desperation. They only saw the numbers, and numbers lag behind reality….

      I had always questioned why..even my kids couldn’t see it.. my description of my life’s journey sounded like BS to them..then a couple years ago I went to a neighborhood where the ice I live daily simply doesn’t exist..I was sitting at a table of executives with multi national companies and their description of business lives that were nowhere near the real world..

      Hopefully the Duchess of the Cotswolds finds something which suits. Ideally land and greenhouses would accompany the humble abode.       As an aside, New Bern is named after the Swiss noble Christoph von Graffenried, 1st Baron of Bernberg. He brought Swiss and German settlers to the New World publishing his memoir “Relation of my American Project” in 1716. It would appear that former First Lady Laura Bush is one of his descendents.

      A day after news broke about Mr. Zukerberg buying a castle, #47 made a quick evening trip to Myrtle Beach.   6. OK, done reading ‘Ancient Children’. What scares me most is your rather accurate portrayal of government & security run amuck. It is more true than most people want to believe. I speak from experience when I was in the Army Security Agency during my brief military career. I’ve detailed some of that here long ago… won’t go into that again. Never wanted to work for government again, even as a contractor. I managed to make an adequate life in the private sector.

    • Yes… I got stuck on the centenarian study that mapped longevity, habits, and environmental factors — but like most large scale studies, it looked at population level trends, not the day to day realities of fragile elders…. When Congress later passed broad laws limiting both chemical and physical restraints, the intention was good but not well thought out…protect dignity, prevent abuse, reduce over sedation. But the people writing the laws weren’t the ones catching residents mid?fall at 3 AM or facing a combative patient …

      On the floor, we called it the “drop and flop law.” Side rails removed, lap buddies banned, trapezes gone — all the tools that helped reposition or prevent a fall were suddenly off limits. The law assumed restraint equals harm… But in real life, removing all restraints increases risk, especially for confused, weak, or wandering elders… combined with hippa the my shadow traveler remains by him or herself..

      My thought was could this be connected to the centenarian study?
      Maybe not directly — but it fits the same pattern… policy made from 30,000 feet, without seeing what happens at ground level… The study focused on longevity… the law focused on autonomy….. Neither accounted for the fact that autonomy without support can shorten longevity of the patients….

      The first image that came to mind was a patient that contacted MRSA …
      phew.. or the wife that contacted a disease her husband worked with that didn’t wash good enough after he was done treating the patient..theres a reason those locker rooms have showers. use them..

      the floor during midnight watch. Buffer hits cryptographic
      equipment which is near the floor and we are “down”.

  8. God..I’m dying for a bologna sandwich with smoked mayo..

    1 cup Mayonnaise (homemade or store?bought)
    1–2 cups Ice (for keeping mayo cold while smoking)
    1 small handful Wood chips (apple, cherry, or hickory)
    1 tsp Smoked paprika (optional, boosts color)
    1 clove Roasted or smoked garlic (optional) but oh so good)
    Pinch Salt (1/8tsp)

    Just like smoking cheese..you coat the cheese with melted butter place it in the cold smoker.. the one I made for xmas uses a tote and cocktail smoker..

    Place the mayo dish inside a larger bowl filled with ice underneath. This keeps the mayo cold and safe while absorbing smoke……

    Light a small amount of wood chips in a cocktail smoker, or grill, or smoke tube. Keep temperature under 90°F to avoid melting or separating the mayo.
