Everything from Employment to Housing to Wars. Promises to be a spectacular week in news developments. And as things come into focus, we expect there will be market reactions.
A bleary-eyed ogle of future, then, the weekend beckons…

Local health unit was distributing RadBlock potassium iodide tablets last week. Picked up pack for 5 people.
Been prepping for gardening. Friend drove his Massey Ferguson 1030 with rotovator attachment and double tilled my garden, then i planted potatoes and will plant sweet corn this coming week. Tulips and daffodils flowering nicely. Rhubarb nice and picked asparagus twice.
Vic
And here I thought all the vegetables were in congress.
Vic S : my next door neighbor has a garden that’s gotten _so_ large his wife is insisting some be put to cover crop for a rotation. I buy heirloom seeds to share (always adding to my vault) and he does all the work. At harvest he puts out a roadside stand behind his house (on our side with just (13) homes and hangs out a sign that says free. We catch neighbors from around the lake skulking and snatching veges.
“Rhubarb nice and picked asparagus twice”
That ^ same neighbor grows the best asparagus on the planet. Even the big (more) woody shoots are deluxe. Not sure if the seed stock, the ground, his soil amendments -or- dumb luck?
My Grandma had rhubarb. Wish I had kept a plant from her garden. In the ’70s I rented a historic farmhouse with buds. It came with rhubarb. Farm ladies would come every year pleading they had been harvesting from those plants for decades.
They were so glad we agreed that each and every one would bring us baked goods made with the rhubarb. Winner : a rhubarb peach cobbler. That ole farm gal knew how to bake!
Back to winter wear here.
C’mon spring!
Egor
Gawd I love Rhubarb. Pie, cobbler, dump cake, sauce on ice cream. Gotta try to grow some here. Nephew in Wisconsin has about ten giant heads he sells for harvest. Sold 950 lbs when I was there a couple years back.

All four…?
I brag about Michigan cherries and blueberries, and onions and apples, but I hadn’t mentioned (until now) that Michigan is the asparagus capital of the world. West Michigan, from Benton Harbor to Ludington, is the perfect soil and growing environment for asparagus (and for blueberries, BTW.) The National Asparagus Festival and Parade is held each year in Hart.
Once you get above the peat belt in Michiana, the soil is sandy clay. The clay holds natural compost and the sand drains quickly, so any plant which needs a lot of water, but tends toward root rot will grow exceedingly well and have a superior flavor and texture. (I’ll bet Michigan corn is exquisite, but AFAIK I’ve never had any.)
Asparagus season starts in mid-June. The Festival is also in mid-June. The National Blueberry Festival is in mid-August, in South Haven.
Vic,
If you picked up the RadBlock tablets, good idea. You might consider ordering some agricultural grade plastic to lay out a cover over your potatoes to keep radioactive drift dusts OFF of your growing food.
It’s no good to prep against results of fallout via it getting into your lungs or thyroid but then forgetting your food is planted outside in contaminated soil. The route through your guts, is likely quicker in killing you via “HOT POTATOES” and internal radiation burns from garden veges that were not covered before harvest, rather than long term illness through thyroid cancer. Neither way is good.
Just ‘sayin…
The same might be said about our daily spraying by the “Geoengineers”. Please don’t say it’s contrails.

Speaking of Governors, Arkansas Gov Huckabee begs for disaster relief (FEMA), Trump refuses:

Yep, I failed to mention the severity of the Arkansas disaster:

Don’t worry, be happy. But do be a prepared bee. There are economic bears about.
Do a realistic financial and survivability self-assessment, and make adjustments while you can. Can you make it four years without earned income? If I lived on the left side of the lane, I would be asking myself that question. And yes, I could, but I’d rather not, at least through the current administration. But the idea that you control these sorts of outcomes is self-delusion. You must be ready to take what gets shoveled in Ure direction.
There is a reason I keep a printout map of this next to my computer:
http://www.pepperridgenorthvalley.com/Photos/tsunamis_affecting_hawaii.png
Earthquakes anywhere around the Pacific rim have propagation times for the tsunami to reach Hawaii. After the 1960 disaster, a breakwater was constructed across most of Hilo Bay. Since then it has never been seriously tested.
If that big lava shelf on the south shore falls in all at once, which has happened before, the tidal wave of hundreds of feet will wipe out Maui in half an hour. I’d be wondering about that one more than the ones that begin five hours away. We went through one ‘sorta’ wave and then the Japan one that would have wrecked us if we didn’t get far from the harbor. Tidal waves are definitely a real threat.
Floating is still pretty safe in those regards. Make it to deep water and you never even know it happens. Me and the dog slept through the 3-11 six miles offshore. Meanwhile Lahaina harbor was trashed.
Stiks
The height of the 3/11 tsunami in Hawaii was just over a foot. Everything depends upon the shoreline it encounters. Kahalui harbor on Maui had the worst damage due to it’s shape and size. They had several feet of water come ashore which damaged dock facilities there.
Yes, the south shore shelf of the big island is a concern. It is a large geologic slippage that has been ongoing for centuries, but mostly a little bit at a time. Last big one was 1863 when it subsided several feet and inundated several native Hawaiian shoreline villages. Given history, it is unlikely to let go all at once, but one can never say never with a volcano involved. I am several miles inland at 300 ft elevation with lots of rolling lava terrain in between. Shoreline is a cliff that drops into deep water, so it minimizes a shoreline tsunami. And I am several miles north of the volcano East Rift zone where the southern breakaway would occur. So I feel pretty good about my location.. chosen after decades of familiarity with the geology of the region.
Heavy rains and high winds/hail. Our southern Oklahoma city got flooded this morning. Boats were out rescuing people, mostly from cars in low lying areas. A neighbor’s house got flooded and he checked to see if I was OK. A friend’s backyard looked like a river was flowing through it. We do have don’t drive/don’t drown signs in common flood areas, but this was an exceptional storm. Warnings from the police/goverment/weather advisory system ,were put out to tell people to stay home and off the roads.

So, did the transplanted Californicators bring their dirty habits, or is this a long-term Austin issue…?
My first degree, back in the 1970s, was in journalism. Most of my fellow students were left leaning, but they still strove to produce balanced stories. The teacher insisted on it – if a story had two or more sides to it, we were expected to talk to everyone involved, or our work was handed back to us. That concept has been out the window for some time now. A story consisting of a single source espousing a political agenda isn’t journalism – it’s crap.
What was understood then, and is missing now, is that rights come with responsibilities. The purpose of the First Amendment is to prohibit the government from censoring someone’s speech (or writing). It does not necessarily protect you from the consequences of what you say after you say it. That’s where responsibility comes in. The quickest way to lose a right is to abuse it. I suspect that is the end game of many of those who keep pushing the envelope…..or it was. Now the goal is controlling the narrative. Using that as justification for leaking harmful information is about as irresponsible as it gets.
Daughter was a High School rock star with a camera — won scholarships and national awards as one of the best junior photojournalists in the land. Her HS faculty advisor and journo department head was a screaming Liberal, but also a nationally-recognized educator. The rule in her classes, school newspaper, yearbook, and whatever else she oversaw was exactly as you were taught in college. If a column or story demonstrated any bias or favoritism whatsoever, it never made it to print.
I did not care for the lady’s politics, but I admired the hell out of her integrity and attention to her job. For 30-some years she taught her kids that everybody had biases and prejudices, but personal bias had no place in journalism and was the shortest distance between an “A” and an “F…”
