The Biggest Battle in Finance -Jobs Data

10-minutes into trading, the market is emphasizing the importance of asking the right question, again. With the Dow down more than 800, compare the chart here with the one earlier this morning. Noitce how the 200 DMA looms nearby?

People unable to learn — or unwilling to deal with data — are about to be dashed on the rocks of history.

As we figure it — being a bit slow-witted and all — it really comes down to two simple things.

  1. Individuals, organizations, and governments have a remarkable inability to recognize Truth when it wanders in.

Which tees up our first observation of the morning:  What is the biggest battle in finance right now?  The answer is in the upper right corner of our Aggregate Index today.

Here’s the simplified read-in:

  • I cooked up the Aggregate Index in 2000 because market shills pretended that the Internet Bubble train wreck didn’t matter.  Sure, between $5 and $7 trillion disappeared, but Wall St. didn’t miss a beat.
  • Then, we tracked the Housing Bubble collapse 2007-2009 and saw the same denial again.
  • From there, we saw bubbles were not isolated events, but successive ones. So from the 2022 major low, we began looking at wave counts.
  • Depending on which model of financial behavior you savor, you can see how we might ask (what this chart does):  “Is the present wave 5 rolling over?”
  • And if it is, then what magnitude is the new down?  Will it be smallish – like “normal” semi-annual down waves?  Bigger like the 10-11 cycles? Or something larger — like a Depression-starter in the Kondratieff class? (Which is also spelled Kondratiev or Kondratyev by historical-revisionist economists who don’t like the American Economic Society Kondratieff spelling used in 1927 on actual papers by you-know-who… We still roll old-school around here.)

That’s between you, your cerebral cortex and pattern-matching skills.  We don’t offer financial advice — just economic discussion. But we do go deep there.

Contraindications and Hype

Reality is becoming a little rougher to talk-over this week.

Those are the “static crashes” that keep most people from capturing signal – due to high overriding noise.  Around here?  Think of us as a kind of “noise blanker” site.

Jobs Data?

Yeah – despite the partial shutdown, actual data is out.  But it wasn’t good…

Total nonfarm payroll employment edged down by 92,000 in February, and the unemployment rate changed little at 4.4 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Employment in health care decreased, reflecting strike activity. Employment in information and federal government continued to trend down.

This news release presents statistics from two monthly surveys. The household survey measures labor force status, including unemployment, by demographic characteristics. The establishment survey measures nonfarm employment, hours, and earnings by industry. For more information about the concepts and statistical methodology used in these two surveys, see the Technical Note.

Dow futures – down a hundredish – were pushing down 300 after the drop.

And BTC is back under $70,000 again, too.

The Second Biggest Question

It should be “What are we going to do about it?”

But the cat’s out of the bag and the answer is obvious.  Most people will do absolutely nothing.

Here’s how we know this by just observing the people around us (or used to,  at least before we fled urban mass madness in 2004):

  • Most people statistically can’t keep ideal weight.
  • Most people don’t get enough exercise.
  • Most people don’t have a personal Life Plan.
  • Most people don’t have a schedule to implement plans.

So with a laggard and sluggish population, you were expecting what?

I don’t mean to go off all preachy on this.  But thanks to social media, America is “Full of Spew But Little DO.”

And that’s why, heading into the weekend in cash, working the latest crop of bean sprouts out of the food reactor, and bracing for what may be coming, it amazes us that anyone still has time to turn on the media and strain their ears just to capture more static crashes.  The Big Signal should be obvious.

It just doesn’t make sense.  Unless the world really is crazy.  And I haven’t been able to locate a warranty card.

Spew Over Do – Part 2

With food stocks looking sketchy long-term, and my schedule features cleaning out the rain barrel catchment system, how about the weekly “Drought Shout”?

Cut a diagonal line, from about Spokane, Washington down to the upper east coast of Florida and the temps are set to continue well above average in the West and Southwest.  And rain? After maybe a good pee’s worth this weekend?  Nope.

I forget where it was, but an old saying was “Lift your eyes to the hills/horizon because from there shall come your salvation.”  Well, around here, we look at the event horizon constantly and all we see coming are more problems.  And potential threats like food shortages by fall.

Now imagine the whole world is in a crap storm – wi9th unafordable verythingf but food in particular – and the spot power outs begin to show up – later this summer? next summer: just that they sdhow up. and then the days labor of a measure of grain and a messure of oil… Now – sitting there in the dark, would you rather have a crypto wallet or a foodmaker? AND (*GULP) 400 SOLAR panels – a mere almost quarter megawatt all Ure own.

          dam… and I thought my 42 panels and two backup generators was a beginning….y problem..is its all grid tie… I do have a couple inverters that I can switch out to give me the power if the grid goes down..but dam…you’ve got power..we generate an average ( depending on cloud cover etc.) 26 – 37 kW a day..its actually our lowest utility bill..we still have to pay hookup etc and what power we use after dark..but dam..you could go offline if you wanted.. my personal thought is that I’ve always believed the grid should work like a national cooperative , not a competition. Solar shouldn’t be about everyone trying to go off?grid on their own island — it should be about strengthening the whole system.
          Imagine if every substation had its own solar tower a mini grid.. and every home’s grid?tie system acted as a small node feeding stability back into the network. Instead of a fragile, top – down power structure, we’d have a web of interconnected micro?sources supporting each other strengthening our grid. That’s real national energy security — a grid where everyone contributes and everyone benefits to keep the country operating during a catastrophic event.. Now in my way of thought is A real cooperative national power grid means everyone contributes and everyone benefits — especially when the country is facing a catastrophic event whether its a freak in certain storm in Texas or a hurricane on the east coast. Right now from where I sit my opinion is we’re incredibly vulnerable because we’ve always shifted toward a business?model mindset of control and profit instead of resilience and shared stability . In chasing short?term gains for fat walley’s pocket book and bottom line, that we’ve exposed our underbelly of weakness.. totally dependent on a failing system.
          Where A distributed, cooperative power network would make us stronger, not weaker in the long run..

  2. ill give yah all one to ponder from the data bank . every inflationary depression turns into a deflationary depression . especially since september 2019 when it was the end and we tried to invent inflation and garbage . so think about that one .

    • Traditionally, when the hyperinflating fiat currency disappears, and transactions are all barter or PM, then deflation can take hold. Not sure how cryptos will behave in this sort of environment. I would tend to expect the majority to evaporate as well. Uncharted.

    • Personally not a gold bug, Len. Nor am I touching paper PM’s in this environment. I expect PM’s to pull back. Keeping enough physical silver for paying personal property taxes is more insurance than investment. Not concerned about the net present.

      How could I be so dumb … of course hitting 50,000 was a sell off trigger even withOUT our foreign adventurism. BUT … foreign adventurism we do have IN SPADES>

      The nearest analogy with the current market I think is you need to go back to 1973 and 1979 when oil was cut off from flowing to the world. Per my post from yesterday 1/3 of all of the oil that is traded/consumed outside of the borders where it was produced is now LOCKED OUT from shipping to the world (that is the amount that effectively goes through the Hormuz Straits) … ie: a 1973 & 1979 oil shortage dynamic.

      The spill over affects for most of the world at losing 1/3 of the world’s traded and shipped oil is tremendous and they are more than just “financial” if it stays off line for any length of time.

      This time around, unlike in 1973 and 1979 those of us in the US/Canada should NOT experience any availability issues (ie: can only buy gas on certain days, limited on how much you can buy, stations running out) except California which imports lots of it’s fuel from India /South Korea which get much of their oil from the Persian Gulf. The rest of the US will have plenty of fuel because we have greatly increased our domestic production since those days … we will just have to pay higher prices since the world’s prices are going up and will drag US prices up with them.

      Forget normal trading and go back and dig out the charts from 1973 and 1979. That may give you the best picture of what to expect wrt markets “IF” the Persian Gulf stays off line for very long. “IF” the Persian Gulf comes back on line quickly … well life will be GRAND!! …. Right?

        during the 1930s and WWII, gas really was rationed. When I was a kid, a friend’s dad still had an old tractor rigged with a homemade gasifier — they burned corn cobs, wood chips, whatever they had, and ran the engine off the fumes. Years later Mother Earth News showed the same idea with a converted water?heater tank. I even built a couple myself.
        using an oil barrel and a smaller more efficient one with plumbing parts..I didn’t have the capital to fund the plumbing parts one..a friend did..when he died the family offered it to me..but I didn’t have the money to buy it..it was hooked up to a generator on a cart..we used saw dust as he filter..all I have is a photo of it lol..
        Those old systems weren’t pretty, but they kept farms running when fuel wasn’t guaranteed. It’s a reminder that our modern grid and fuel supply look strong, but they’re actually fragile. We’ve traded resilience for convenience, and in doing so we’ve exposed how vulnerable we really are.

    • A RECENTLY AS MY AIRLINE VP DAYS when I flew on my (positive space) interlione passes it was alwasy shirt and tie expected 1974 but Duffy’s onto land of hobos – maybe I’ve been too focused on railyards for Hobies 2.0 – maybe should have gone to the airport.

A portion of society that formerly considered it a blessing to be able to GREATLY increase their lifestyle by traveling by Greyhound! Be aware … arguments at the counter with the Counter Agents are NORMAL and for EVERY FLIGHT!! (next time you are flying somewhere wander over to the Spirit Gate and observe the wildlife so you cans start to be “educated” on an entirely different segment of society)

      Even my traditional airline of choice, Southwest (because bags USED to fly free and I am paying my own way – no company is buying my tickets), has been getting worse and worse over the last 10 years. This year OMG … pajamas? (or something that looked like that, more than one person too on every flight I took). At least no one on any of my SW flights was fighting or arguing with the stewards /stewardesses or the gate agents … LOL.

      • It’s been 10 years since I’ve flown (into retirement). Going to the big city next month and looking forward to Hawaiian Air… oldest US airline that has never had a crash or killed a passenger. Southwest competes with them for inter-island flights, but they fly 737 Max8s… the ones with the defective flight control software that crashes… twice now. I’m not getting on one of those planes!
        Hawaii inter island flights are all “Aloha Casual” attire. And flights are short.

    The truly seismic gig is easy – watch the SPX and TNX (with a minor screen clocking King Dollar). Today the S&P turned away from the sell-down at 1,955 lo. The March 2025 lo is in sight which needs to hold come what may. Big push is a flat bottom right at todays lows. The TNX is where all the money is, with traders closely eyeing 4.2% which, if taken out, might cause fugliness. The Buck? She’s catching a bid, a big bid. Surprising.

    lol lol… Gas prices didn’t just creep up — they jumped hard. We saw a 26% spike overnight out here in the wastelands, and even the station owner said suppliers are warning that if things keep going the way they are, we could be looking at double or triple the current price. When the bottom of the economic pyramid gets hit like that, everything above it feels the shock — trucking, manufacturing, groceries, you name it, they have to compensate for the same increase . Fuel spikes don’t just stay at the pump….they ripple through the whole system, and everyone has to make compensation to these increases.

  15. a while back, i was commenting on here about that little black rock moving towards me on its own, while was up oh around 7007 feet above sea level on The Mountain in the Valley of Enoch. it moved towards me on its own. so stooped down, looked at it. then i picked it up and held it in my hand.

    then i tossed it off a 500 to 700 foot cliff and watched it fall and fall and fall. when it hit the Basen down below it shattered into a million little pieces. and that was the end of that little black rock.

    i wrote about it on here just shortly after it happened, then the memory resurfaced again the last time i commented on Urban Survival.

    after about 15 minutes, no more things arise in my mind. i am just breathing in, hold and exhale. after about 30 minutes its as if my breathing is on auto pilot and my whole body is breathing in, hold, exhale, hold. over and over. in that place the sense of time vanishes. after 45 minutes the sence of gravity vanishes. its hard to describe but its like im in an eternal Eternal Rest. I can feel immortality present within and all around me.

    Like Im boundless, part of everything and everything is an extension of me. there is no barriers or boundries, everthing is an extension of my being.

  16. until yesterday, i had never noticed that the first 3 words of James Chapter 5, verse 1 are:

    GO to Now

    in my current Bible, Jimmy Swagerts old Bible with his notes, the first word is all Caps. GO and the first letter of Now is also Capitialized.

    Through, the entire rest of this Bible only the words LORD OF HOSTS, LORD OF HEAVENLY HOST are all Caps, and O Lord has the first two letters in all caps.

    everyone else just gets the first letter of their name Capitolized along with Faith, Love and Hope.

          For 60% enrichment the bomb’s weight would skyrocket up to the 40,000# to 60,000# due to the specialized metal tamping that would need to surround it so it would actually go “BOOM” and there is no indication at all that Iran has ever been capable of the high level metalurgy it takes to make that specialized tamping material.

          Advanced “miniturized” weapons, such as one that can actually fit on a decent sized rocket, require access to a working reactor.           Iran has had a viable space program since 1996. They can put about 550kg into orbit with their launch vehicles.
