If you have been following the (few but pesistent) online predictors and seers who have been mentioning a major spring EQ in the nation’s midsection (New Madrid replay, anyone?), this caught our eye.

A bit Stalinesque if you cornered me, but productivity is always rising, comrades:

“Nonfarm business sector labor productivity increased 2.8 percent in the fourth quarter of 2025, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today, as output increased 2.6 percent and hours worked decreased 0.2 percent. (All quarterly percent changes in this release are seasonally adjusted annualized rates.) Breaking: Challenger Jobs Cuts Fall:

Sure – no real federal report likely tomorrow – due to shutdown (did I mention the utter ineptitude of the national clown congress?).  But at least private enterprise is still online…

U.S.-based employers announced 48,307 job cuts in February, down 55% from the 108,435 job cuts in January. It is down 72% from the 172,017 cuts announced during the same month last year, according to a report released Thursday from global outplacement and executive coaching firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

In case you missed the (delicious!) difference between now and 1929?  In 1929 statistics were still being kept.  The public, though, lacked time to read and work up that “instant dopamine” hit.  GovDown II – the shutdown sequel – is now playing in the guerrilla street theater, near you.

At a systems/engineering level?  GovDown II – the sequel – is “Well-principled pseudo-leaders breaking a country.”

Given there is a presidentially decreed war going on? DHS shutdown could delay terror threat response capabilities, expert warns.  Principles over outcomes? It isn’t the first time.

On Financials, though: Bitcoin popped above $73,500 overnight. Dow futures were still down 200 but our thinking here is Big Playahs playing the big on the less-informed Retail customers.

End of the World is off  the breakfast menu – but maybe re-check before lunch.

When IS WW III?

That’s no longer a throwaway question, and sloppy use of the term is beginning to matter. A world war is not simply “a very bad regional war,” nor is it born the instant social media starts panting into the camera.

Historically, world wars become world wars when major powers are drawn in across multiple theaters, alliances begin to harden, and the geography of conflict outruns the original quarrel. That is the line now worth watching — not headlines, but structure.

Since Sri Lanka recovers bodies from Iranian warship IRIS Dena sunk by US torpedo | AP News, we’ve been eyeing the maps. Which brings us to this morning’s “mess over easy.”

When a U.S. submarine sinks an Iranian warship off Sri Lanka, the battlefield is no longer confined to the Persian Gulf or some tidy “Middle East” box on a cable-news map. And when Turkey reports that NATO air defenses destroyed an Iranian missile headed into Turkish airspace, the terminology gets serious in a hurry. Turkey is not just “near Europe.” Turkey is a NATO member, which means what was an Asian war starts sniffing around treaty machinery with continental consequences.

Now, to be precise, this still may not be World War III yet. NATO’s Article 5 is not a mousetrap that snaps automatically the instant something ugly crosses a border; it is political machinery, and it has been formally invoked only once in NATO history. But the very fact that we are now discussing missile interceptions over or near Turkish territory means the war has moved beyond “local problem” status.

Once a conflict begins touching alliance commitments, sea lanes, force projection, and retaliatory options in more than one region, the historians start sharpening pencils to make the call.

So our working definition is really pretty simple: World War III begins not with a declaration, but with a cascade. It begins when several major powers are no longer merely interested in a regional war, but are being pulled into it by obligations, strikes, counterstrikes, and the inability to stand aside without strategic loss.

A competing (simplified) version? One nuke involving a civilian population center.

By that standard, we are not serving WW III for breakfast this morning — but the kitchen is no longer closed.  In fact, there’s a line around the block: North vs. South Korea (more Asian players) and India-Pakistan – another – plus Afghanistan and other flash-goggle hotspots.

For now? I’ll be the guy hitting refresh on the Doomsday Clock – Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. It used to be 85 seconds to nuclear midnight.  But that was back in January of this year and a few things have changed.

War’s “Next”

It’s rude, barely applicable, but the old saying “Choose up sides and smell armpits” feels about right:

In your readings, look for the word “peace” (or even talks).  That’s the ‘tell’ that we’re still in the ante up phase of play.

And – when you go shopping – look out for the “cell-cultured” pseudo-meats: Know how they lie about meat – to scam you – Check your labels.

Yes, I got up at 2 AM but that’s the new 3 AM next week – as Daylight Time madness strikes formerly rational people Sunday.

Around the Ranch: Ideas or Life Balance

I’ve been paying a lot more attention lately to “where people live.”  Some people live Inside their heads.  They are driven by ideas, concepts, domain exploration, and even spiritual research. Inside people.

But then there are the Outside people.  They are focused more on externalities. They will vacuum compulsively – so the rug pattern is “right.”  The car needs waxing. Weight, muscle tone, and personal appearance are their guiding lights.

But – and this is something I’m finding to be a useful personal exercise – is a new practice I have when a column is done and published.

That’s when I sit back – last swig of cold coffee – and ask the question “Which macro domains do I move in today?”

Tuesday was easy.  All day – Inside my head.  Got not one, but two patent applications rolled.  One was filed Tuesday, the other (with more drawing notes to finish) will pop tomorrow.

Then Wednesday it was another “Inside Day.”  Reason?  I did the one focus day per year where all the results are lined up and entered into the forms.  I will sit on it for a week, but that’s in the “aging wine rack” now – just waiting to ensure latest TurboTax updates and no changes from brokerage firms and it’s click-to-file.

Today?  I need an Outside Day.

This is a topic Elaine and I talk about over wine, sometimes.  Like last night.  She’s never really signed in on an engineering project.  She’s never been in that world where 16-hours later a pizza shows up with a six-pack of Jolt.  But I recommended she take some time to explore what it’s like for me and a bunch of other workaholic types like me.

Tracy Kidder’s seminal book laid it out back when I was out on the bleeding edge. 1982 when we were just doing the first-ever over radio to home market data concepting.

The Soul of a New Machine, “signing in” to a project—often phrased as “signing up”—captures the profound commitment of systems thinkers, like the engineers at Data General racing to build a revolutionary minicomputer in the late 1970s.

It’s not mere enrollment but a voluntary immersion, where individuals pledge their intellect, time, and often sanity to the endeavor, driven by the thrill of creation amid chaos. If it costs a relationship, that pales to hitting a deliverable in that world.

For ranchers and tinkerers like us, this resonates deeply: just as those engineers dove headfirst into silicon schematics and midnight debugging sessions, we “sign in” to our own layered worlds by first tackling the tangible “outside the head” tasks—mending fences, clearing the shop, or stacking hay bales under the vast Texas sky.

My (outside) physical ritual isn’t procrastination; it’s essential groundwork, organizing the external realm to free the internal one from clutter, allowing ideas to flow unimpeded like a well-tuned irrigation system.

Why do I commit this way? I mean two patents in a day is stupid at 77, right?

The answer is simple: because true innovation, whether birthing a new machine or nurturing a patent to life – or just doing taxes – it’s a contact moment with undivided focus. The “three Selves” align and magic happens.

Signing in ensures we’re all-in, transforming potential overload into purposeful momentum.

Best part? Returning to the Outside world – which I’ll be doing today – is all the stronger and more sensory than ever.  Because it’s that exact high level of contrast that distinguishes between Inside and Outside domains.

I’m going Outside today, because my latest patent idea – (to auto-link tax docs via embedded HTML (or xml through an API) to tax filings (thereby eliminating the whole audit layer of taxes) – can wait.  It’s just easier to hire and empire-build.  It gives 100,000 people unnecessary jobs but it keeps the circularity of the charade going.

Enough domain metrology!  Back to productive unrest! Where’s the door?

I have been eating twice a day, late breakfast and early dinner, instead of three meals, for the past week and a half. I seem to be remembering dreams a bit better…

      i’ve found splitting my 10mg into an AM & PM dosing helps. if you’re doing any sort of exercise routine, you may notice the creatine helps, but mainly i’ve noticed it more in a general feeling of well-being, as well as less brainfog.

    • dLynn : thanks for your kind words. I can and will hold my own with whoever finds it hard to be civil. That’s my intent in _all_ interactions but some folks deserve scorn so we-b-locked-loaded (so to speak).

      A dear lovely old fella was one of my favorite clients, along with a select handful of others. He called his wife “honeyken” and GrandKids were Grandlings. I stole and use both descriptors and think of Paul (RIP).

      After representing the Gent for a couple decades, when the end was near, we had a chat and after business was done, we went all over the map. He said avoiding discussion about WW2 was due to NDAs …

      The guy was one of the first hires working on the Manhattan Project. He continued in this service until Japan and Germany both surrendered. Amazing he kept that pact, spoke to noone for 50-ish years.

  16. I wasn’t available this morning for trading – had an important, early morning meeting with a very large Huevos Rancheros breakfast., after a short Harley ride.
    Someone pushed the button this morning – DJIA is down over 1,000 points., VIX is up over 25.., Oracle announced they will be laying off thousands., Morgan Stanley will be laying off at least 3%., diesel prices are starting to make a big move up [ there goes any hopes of inflation control.] Bitcoin down $2,600 Euro stocks are down across the board – West Texas Tea is up over 8% at $80.60 a barrel.
    – Looks to me like they finally got the memo.

    • The action the Street noticed, but nobody else has, is the communization of South Korea. Their new government is moving to join Un, and replace the U.S. with China as both a trade and military partner.

      Samsung, LG, and HKG (Hyundai / Kia / Genesis) are having nightmares, wondering if they’ll remain viable corps until even the end of the year.   17. Yes.., I have heard the debate a few times – but it still riles me a bit. How come West Texas Intermediate has climbed over 8% today – now over $80 a barrel – when that supply and infrastructure is not affected in any way.., yet it reacts like it is being bombed out of existence.
    Just ticks me off that they play the money game like this.
    Gasoline in my remote neck of the country went over $4 a gallon this morning. Filled the Harley up on the way home this morning.., the pump read over $210 – from the last guy that filled up. Ouch !

      Last week my SUV was at the dealership, probably 25 miles distant and … regular gas was $2.48. I didn’t even need gas but stopped to fill up anyway. Now, snapped back to $3.29 (2 days ago).

  21. I have six projects going [ I fell behind due to family ‘issues’.] Not one of which will make me a dime. I might save a few bucks – that counts – on two projects., but no funds rolling in.

Considering that New Madrid has been having more swarms of small earthquakes than normal, and that the quake is in the direct path of the future lake/inland sea shown on the U.S. Navy Earth Changes Map as extending from the Gulf of America to the Great Lakes, this could well be a sign of an imminent big one.

    Regular reporting puts it at 20% of the world’s daily production, which is currently about 103 million bpd. (20% = 21 million bpd)

    If one takes out the combined US /Canada production which is almost entirely used internally of 19 million barrels (we ship out some but import about the same amount plus import an additional 2 million bpd)that means the actual oil produced for the rest of the world totals 84 million barrels.

    Now take away the internally used production of the other major producers in the world, below:

    Internal consumption numbers:
    Russia 3.7 mbpd
    Saudi Arabia 3.6 mbpd
    Brazil 3.3 mbpd
    Iran 2.2 mbpd
    Mexico 1.9 mbpd
    Iraq 2.0 mbpd
    Nigeria .5 mbpd
    Kuwait .5 mbpd

    VOILA you have just removed another 17.7, say 18, million barrels a day that never gets transited anywhere.

    103 less 19 less 18 = 66 million bpd oil produced that is shipped and sold to 3rd parties daily

    Suddenly you are talking about ONE THIRD 1/3 of the worlds tradable oil goes through the Hormuz Straits!! NOT 20% but close to 33%!!

    OUCH if you are a country that has to buy oil to keep your economy afloat. A 1/3 shortfall of oil availability is going to HURT the oil importers very very badly, particularly China and India

    • Gasoline and diesel for California:

      On Jan 1 Phillps closed it’s last Calforna and Valero is to close it’s last one on April 1. Californa now gets between 35% to 60% of it’s refined product via tanker ships /barges (actual amount varies depending upon reporting source) with the largest share coming from India/South Korea, India being in the lead.

      Guess where India get’s it’s crude to refine? The Persian Gulf is a HUGE source! China just cut off ALL gasoline /diesel exports because of the cut off of Persian Gulf oil, can India be far behind?

      While overall the US/Canada are good wrt oil/fuel AVAILABILITY unlike in 1973 and 1979 when we imported LARGE amounts of oil to keep our economy running, it is just pricing going up to match world prices that will hurt … EXCEPT for California.

      California could well have a serious gasoline /diesel AVAILABILITY issue while the rest of the country is just fine if the Persian Gulf shipping stay shut down.

      fwiw there are NO pipelines for oil or refined product that goes INTO California though there are two pipelines carrying refined product that go OUT of the state (one to the Las Vegas area the other to the Phoenix area). As a result getting product that is refined elsewhere into California is limited .. (ie: by ocean transport mostly though it might be possible to RR tanker car some in, but the rail availability INTO California is very limited)

      I guess we wait and see how long the Hormuz Straits shut down lasts.
