You may not be familiar with Daniel Handler’s series of children’s books, but the Lemony Snicket series, if in title and nothing else, does have a certain foreboding to it in finance. Let me explain with a starting Wiki:
“Lemony Snicket is the pen name of American author Daniel Handler (born February 28, 1970). Handler has published various children’s books under the name, including A Series of Unfortunate Events, which has sold over 60 million copies and spawned a 2004 film and Netflix TV series from 2017 to 2019 of the same name. Lemony Snicket also serves as the in-universe author who investigates and re-tells the story of the Baudelaire orphans in A Series of Unfortunate Events.”
And so, we feel that a “Series of Unfortunate Events” may be an apt description of what appears, apparition-like, on the horizon of Wall Street.
Consider the following.
- We anticipate a retest of recent lows (say, wasn’t yesterday fun?) and then a mid-month rally. After we get past Fed-in-a-Box this time next week.
Our Aggregate Index – when we apply the size of Wave ((1)) (micro) down as a visual tool to throw darts at the present Wave ((4)) micro rally (at this morning’s open) which could last anywhere from today’s close to just ahead of the Fed decision Wednesday.
This, one complete. should give us a barn-burned decline in short order (think unpopular Fed discussion) but it should quickly pass, and a minor Wave (2) rally.
The Unfortunate Events seem lining up around Memorial Day or just prior. Because it has been a fixture of markets that declines from highs tend to run about 55-calendar days. The trading days would be more soothing intellectually, but common sense and money run counter all the time.
For now (with more on the Peoplenomics $40-dollar a year “high-rollers” site tomorrow, we have our nominal high (44,660.42). This points to May 16th. Under “normal” conditions, we stop there, worry about a mid-month low and then get on to a summer high before collapse in the fall.
But, there’s the pesky matter of weekends and trading days. Several approaches point to as much as a month later (second week of June). So, in our thinking, the idea is “Unfortunate Events” window.
The Puetz Window, six weeks from the Solar eclipse, closes, too. May 20th, so again, that Ides of May would be a good “something” and perhaps, since Unfortunate Events take time, we could run into June.
The mental framing is rallying for now, possible to fill a Wave 4 larger than Wave 1 down trading box, like so late today or Monday:
In this kind of outlook, we move smartly higher into the close today, maybe even carrying a bit Monday. But come Tuesday, the market seems likely to be afflicted with Oh My God – Fed Decision Disease. OMG-FDD.
But the Big Star to Steer By is “How long with the month-ending Unfortunate Events carry into June? And from there, what kind of rally into Labor Day ahead of all-hits-the-fan in Fall?
Brace for sourness and rather “Lemony” markets.
Delusions of Income
Data first, and then we will burst the bubble.
“Personal income increased $122.0 billion (0.5 percent at a monthly rate) in March. Disposable personal income (DPI)—personal income less personal current taxes—increased $104.0 billion (0.5 percent). Market LOVED the happy talk, Dow futures popped 150+ and more upside’s to come. Wave 4 isn’t done – yet.
While this reads as a reasonable press release supportive of the Biden regime – which we could expect from mouthpiece State Media – these income stats have always been too narrow for our numerical tastes. Here’s why.
Let’s pretend 160-million people have jobs and their income goes up 5 percent in a year, following? And let’s say the average hourly wage is $38 an hour. Causing wages to go up $1.90 per hour. Call it 6.3 billion of wages?
Now, let’s assume that another 3 million people come into the country in our statistical window. But none of these people, not a one of ’em, has a job. What happens to the people who thought they were making $1.90 an hour more?
Well, um, sorry, they make only $1.20 an hour more…which is a real 3 percent more and this is in a 3+ percent inflation world. In short, no real increase – break-even aet best.
Fortunately, the Bureau of Economic Analysis doesn’t have a “tell the whole truth and nothing but” mandate. Or they would look at total incomes and total expenses of the country and total made up money. But, because of a lackl of actual oversight (both by the administration and congress) we are left to consider Personal Income as a Joke (which it is) because it doesn’t count the net cash flows and God help up nm counting of purchasing power change. So, the orchestra here on Titanic America plays on while we’re “down by the bow” as the waters rise.
Wars or Lifeboats?
Now we get back to political expediency. Lifeboats would involve limiting (via tariffs) foreign-made products. And educating Americans, and starting new factory construction, reopening mines, and going for more output.
Naw. Too lazy. When was the last time you saw a person without a phone?

Summer this year may be like 2020. Because we are going to be getting more rain today. Up to two inches.
Up at the Tyler Texas Weather site, we go to the lookups of historical data. Already this year, Tyler has 25.94 inches of rain. We figure 28 inches YTD by the end of the month.
Going back a way (last year was 17.81 inches of rain), 2020 had over 26 inches. Last year, we had a 102,8 in July and a 106.7 in August.
Planning ahead, 2020 gave up a July high of 95.2 followed by a 100.8 in August.
Using this crackpot method, we are planning for a very good gardening season and good working weather, all things considered. If this is climate change, bring it on.
I’ll tell you what: One of the reasons Elaine and I seldom venture off the ranch is because there are so many crazies in the world. And we don’t trust a one of ’em. In fact, we passed on a nice dinner out tonight because we don’t have a video surveillance monitor for this evening… No, that’s not paranoid. That’s being able to read the data. Paranoia is a survival skill incarnate.
Ton of the usual construction work here this weekend. Small projects (adding “barn door” lighting to better set-off the mural in the conversation room). And some large (schlepping lumber or the hour-a-day deck build).
Then there’s the long discussion about whether to do a “recreational trading” position over the weekend. Fed week next week. And it’s here that a bit of time of a surfboard pays off.

If we know there will likely be a Big Wave around the Fed, then the trough ahead of it could come Tuesday afternoon into a Wednesday data drop. Which means the small wave could be along Monday.
This isn’t a perfect way of seeing the future come, but it can offer hints, especially if you trade the hour to 2-day “Swing Trades.” Like surfing waves, a lot of sharks at that poker table, too.
But the Big Waves often have lead-ins of smaller waves. Cheeseburger trades in those small waves, too.

Agreed, your situational awareness if far from paranoia. I will always wait to take Diana out to a nice restaurant when we are in town 2 or 3 times per year to see the grandkids or meet with my financial advisor and our quarterly shopping extravaganzas. The only places closer than 50 miles to the ranch are truck stop diners or cafes. Except for Ms. Mary’s at the sale barn where her exquisite cuisine is well known, it is not what you would call date night level. The closest small town has a neighborhood chain place. Last time, and I do mean LAST, we stopped there for a late lunch on the way home. While we were sitting with menus with a lovely view of the restrooms and the entrance to the kitchen we saw a fellow in the traditional kitchen staff attire come out of the restroom while zipping up his fly and proceed directly into the kitchen. We looked at each other then set the menus down and left.

Love your charts, George. However, what I use to gauge whether an impending correction is imminent are the local pawn shop and the use of the moronic ‘E Trade Baby(s)’ commercials. Just before the tech wreck, the TV channels were flooded with E Trade commercials starring that baby – at that point, I knew we weren’t that far off. I presume that the commercials were used to get the last of retail in the market so they didn’t have a FOMO. From what I can tell, we aren’t that far off and your work substantiates that.
With pawn shops, when the economy begins to roll over, the first thing that happens, especially with contractors, is they start to dump their tools. Our local pawn shop is loaded to the gills with tools of all sorts, especially my favorite, Milwaukee M18 battery operated tools. Can’t tell you how many deals I’ve gotten in order to bolster my tool collection – you can’t have too many tools!

There is a track about 5 – 10 miles north of here running West-to-East where the biggest winds have tended to run historically, but I’ve been hit twice by spring tornadoes in recent years. One of them that twisted off 2′ diameter trees ten feet off the ground in the back pasture, and uprooted even larger trees at the neighbors, may have been a small EF3. The weather service radar only saw it when it was eight miles east and out of steam, and declared it an EF-1. EF-1’s don’t twist off 2′ diameter hardwood trees clean. I was watching the local weather forecaster proclaim the storm had exited my county, and at the same time I could hear the passenger train mowing down the fence row in the back. We have had a better class of mayhem than those freight trains that run through the neighborhoods to the North. It’s still all the luck of the draw.

because it ripples and ebs and flows.

i understand that working where i will be working there is a chance of getting shot. i have been shot before, its not all that fun.
you know, im really careful about what i say, i dont want my words on the front page in a couple days.
i will tell you this, i have had no job for 3 maybe 4 weeks now and every single day all my needs are met. every day, i end the day with a full tank of gas. i have had 5 jobs fall through. i still live in a multi million dollar horse ranch and every single day i dont go without.
here is an example. i did a speaking engagement, on the way home a fella calls me and is struggling with life. i pulled over and parked and was talking to him. then i realized, its 945pm and i havent ate dinner yet. so i tell him, i gotta get off the phone, i havent ate dinner yet, i will call ya tommorrow.
as im hanging up the phone a lady walks out the door infront of me and i relized i parked infront of a resturant.
i roll my window down and she says, hey the resturant is closing in 5 minutes, we have a ton of food we will just end up tossing. i will make you a plate, if ya want. free, no charge.
i said that would be great and she brings me out a giant togo container full of hot food.
like every day that is going on. i was at 3rd place books looking at what they had. the lady infront of me gets a coffee and says, they made me the wrong coffee. they were going to toss it but i figured id ask you if you wanted it.
do you want this? its the exact coffee i was going to order. the exact coffee i almost always order.
i sit and read my book. go out to smoke and think im on a half tank. i need to get gas. how am i going to get gas. i dont have much cash on me.
then all the sudden a man walks up and said, i dont know why im doing this, you are obviously not homeless. i just feel like i should give this to you. here is $50. im paying it forward. i said thanks. have a good day. he said you too.
and 20 minutes later i went and filled my tank.
that has happened every single day. and even more so, since i was last on here.

Getting shot when you have an on-call trauma team a short helicopter away is one problem. Getting shot when you are all alone with no one coming to help is quite another. Isolation is another kind of head lethal. I have found that ex-military frequently underestimate the difficulty and danger of traveling under private contract, without the logistics and resources of Uncle Sugar as back-up. Take care.

i had just experianced Jesus mulitplying the fish and met Sandy at the beach.

that is one tiny example of a hour of life has been like, since i left the mountain.

That same Univeral Presence is saturating me and all around me with its Power.

I’ve never been shot with a bullet. I was once shot with an arrow (thankfully, a field point.) That was sufficient to get the point across that “not being shot” is infinitely preferable to “being shot.”
