Workweek Roulette, Waiting on Mkt’s, Garden-Gaming Spring

With our Presidents Day activities (getting a scalar prototype out the door this week_) most of today will be devoted to work in Ure’s Old Man Lab.   I don’t talk about it much – people’s eyes tend to glaze over, but it’s a very well-appointed place to hang out and do work on the fringe-stuff that I was writing about almost a decade ago in Dimensions Next Door.

If you think you have a “free energy” source, this is the kind of lab you’ll want.  See that microscope in foreground? Where it says “e-May”?  That’s the label on the pulse-ox sitting on the bench below it.  Point being that when you’re doing really off-the wall research, like with Tesla edge-wound bifilar coils, you won’t have room under a traditional microscope to put a 14-inch coil (around a sample) when the neck of a desktop ‘scope only gives you a ‘swing’ of an inch, or two.

And that’s when (remember, I turn 76 this week) I will be (randomly) skipping a day (or two) of Urban here to give me more lab, tree farm, hydroponics, and shop time. Because I’ve become convinced that we humans block ourselves into corners that limit progress.  Things like, oh, the ‘swing’ of a microscope seem silly to talk about – at first glance – but they become “decision support/limits” for our future thinking on a topic.

Around here, it’s always a battle to a) recognize the physical limits around us and then b) hack those limits because with limits in place, your thinking style gets boxed in by the familiar.  In fact, over all the time is labs (electronics mostly) I’ve noticed that the difficulty of instrumenting and testing ideas oftentimes keeps the breakthrough research from happening.  People get into a “Too much of a PITA to test for that.  Besides, probably nothing to it….

Honestly, I think there have been many “good ideas left fallow” (because of laziness/inconvenience).  Who knows how much farther ahead humanity could be – it all [problem] stones were kicked over to see what’s under them?  For now, we won’t know.  Because that’s what defines a Dark Age.  When dogma and the pre-existing conditions in life go unsuspected, unchallenged, and unaddressed.

To play off the book title “Fingerprints of the Gods”  it’s easy as pie to jump out of bed every day at God-awful-thirty.  If you’re motivation is looking for Another Clue as to how “It All Works.”  (Such as it does…)

The project (after this one is shipped out) will be purusing the notion that different potentials between non-adjacent “domain walls” in Reality could be a real source of power.  But, as long as research is limited to single domain/spaces the big potential – which might be ‘out there’ – its likely to remain elusive.

Workweek Roulette

As luck would have it, the Great Ship of State is now being steered by another workaholic.  In looking over Donald Trump’s Sunday work, Presidential Message on the 2025 Daytona 500 struck me as, oh, busy work to an extent.  But far more impressive was being all over weather events with a weekend response within two days of damage in Kentucky. President Donald J. Trump Approves Kentucky Emergency Declaration. That’s responsive government.

Of course, the wheels and cogs keep turning one level down:  US’s Rubio in Riyadh, Russia’s Lavrov en route, with Ukraine talks expected.

And keep an eye on the evolving fight over Executive Power. Trump turns to Supreme Court in bid to fire whistleblower agency head. Contractually, the Dellinger employment hinges on whether he was fired “with cause”.  Siding with the whistleblower agency was an Obama judicial appointment: Judge Amy Berman Jackson who we’ve encountered in other stories. Thing is, I seem to remember that everyone on the Executive side serves “at the leisure of the President” and the words “You’re fired” is all the cause needed.  So it’ll be an interesting SupCo case where conservatives (in theory) hold a 6-3 edge. But we’re not so sure about a couple of those 6, if you follow.

Trump’s first month in office is almost up.  And we notice “Chyna” as he calls it, ain’t too happy with Trump doubling-down on Taiwan. China condemns US after line on ‘Taiwan independence’ cut from site.  On the other hand, time and computer circumstances (like China’s DeepSeek) make the strategic value of Taiwan overwhelming, for now.

What people outside the “wafer-world” may not grok (the verb not the AI) is that both sides are hardening their positions on AI supportive materials.  Just two weeks ago (and this was significant) China’s curbs on exports of strategic minerals | Reuters.  And strategic minerals are key to tech.

Waiting on Markets

Tomorrow or Wednesday, we should get more sense of how the US will roll from here.  But, overnight, overseas markets were generally up strongly.  But color us skeptical: When there’s a holiday and the US is closed, the trade gets thin and prices can run.

On the other hand, Bitcoin remains stuck in the $96-$97 thousand range, so no clues there.  Gold was back over $2900 but Silver was testing the $32 handle a bit after climbing over $34 last week.

For us, it’s watch and wait. With the suspicion than a market turn is possible. because with the DOGE cost-cutting drive, there could be some downside for business (which they will fear like the Dickens).

Chilling

The headlines are bad enough:  ‘Life-threatening cold’ expected as polar vortex stretches across U.S. after deadly weekend flooding.  But then you get to the temperature forecast maps…like tomorrow night’s outlook:

By tomorrow night, it will be miserable.

Looking ahead, though, shouldn’t be too bad.

Around the Ranch: Gaming Spring Planting

First you need to know where you (and your garden!) will be:  For us, it’s:

The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 8b has a minimum average temperature of 15–20° Fahrenheit. This zone includes parts of Texas, Georgia, Florida, and other regions.

See the plant hardiness map here for find where your garden is.

Always fun to line up the different ways to figure when to put those hydroponic hatchinglings out in the dirt.  As a home gardener, there are all kinds of choices:

  • Use an off-the-shelf USDA average last frost Date.
  • Farmer’s Almanac
  • Look at the averages for your typical winter-spring.
  • Look at the Climate Prediction outlooks. NOAA One Month outlooks.
  • Ask AI to sum it all up.

Here’s how the options pencil out here:

  1. Oft the Shelf:  The average last frost date in Palestine, Texas is between March 11 and March 20.
  2. Almanac it: The Farmers’ Almanac predicts a mild and dry winter for most of Texas in 2024–2025.
  3. Averages (from WeatherUnderground monthly for last forecast and average freeze): February 23rd.
  4. NOAA seems to favor early-planting gamblers.

5. Then we ask AI to take a stab at it and lay out “the Big Plan:”

“Based on your location in East Texas (USDA Hardiness Zone 8B, zip code 75803), here are the recommended planting dates for your specified crops, considering both your conventional garden and attached grow room:

Conventional Dirt Garden:

Squash (Summer): Plant seeds outdoors between March 15 and June 15.

Assorted Peppers: Start seeds indoors around January 15 to February 15; transplant outdoors between March 1 and April 15.

Melons (Watermelon): Plant seeds outdoors between March 15 and May 1.

Attached Grow Room:

Hot-Weather Tomatoes (Floridian): Start seeds indoors around January 15 to February 15; transplant into the grow room between March 1 and April 15.

Assorted Lettuces: Plant seeds indoors from January 1 to March 15.

Bok Choy: Plant seeds indoors from January 1 to March 15.

Additional Considerations:

Temperature Management: Utilize your auxiliary diesel heating system to maintain optimal temperatures for seedlings, especially during late winter and early spring. Monitor indoor temperatures to conserve diesel usage.

Sun Shading: Implement the planned 20% sun shading during peak summer heat to protect plants from excessive temperatures.

Please note that these dates are general guidelines. It’s essential to monitor local weather conditions and adjust planting schedules accordingly. For more detailed information, consider consulting the East Texas Vegetable Planting Guide.

That Henderson County Master Gardener’s list looks good.  Look for one applicable in your area. Which means when I get the electronics projects pushed out, ShopTalk Sunday will get back to this years HVAC mods for greenhouses…

Fun times (and fresh radishes!) just ahead!

Write when the cold snap is done snapping…and have a great “residence day” (if you get one).  ShopTalk Sunday is here if you missed it.

    Numbers 3,4 of “the 16 internal methods” = information for entertainment purposes only. No how to’s, just info;

    3. Imagine your hands are swollen. Breath deeply. Do not be nervous or afraid. When you feel your hands are swollen, it is the feeling of absorbing external Qi to supplement your own internal Qi. Do not mistake this feeling as real. Do not pay too much attention to this phenomenon.

    4. Imagine your body is getting heavier as if your weight has been increased. For those who are practicing Qigong standing up, please imagine your feet are unusually heavy as if they are sinking three feet into the ground. Either sitting down or standing up, try to to imagine you are a very large and heavy bell. This is also conscious way to absorb Qi and to increase your magnetic fields.

  2. Did you know that no matter which direction your antennas are pointed, they all point at the same place? On page 60 of the March QST I read “Antipodal Focusing.” For ARRL members:

Then I remembered on FT8 a while ago, I almost always noticed some Western Australians receiving my signals around sometime in the mornings. I thought it was nice but didn’t think any more about it.

So yesterday I went to https://www.antipode-finder.com/ and, by gosh, my antipode WAS in the ocean, but looks like maybe 1,000 miles from Western Australia!

    All roads lead to Rome.

Also, if anyone knows when George’s birthday occurs, and what age he will be, please advise. I can’t find that info anywhere.

Schedule the antenna erection crew when convenient.

        • I was working as KL7USA for a few days as a kid (when I was an o4 equiv civvy age 19) and I had a lp and 30-s1 and (at least at Ft. Rich) the beam was not as good as like a widespaced monobander, you’re abso lutso right. On a big monobander (or even the old TH7s) you could play the nulls a bit, as well as the front to back ratio – no so much on an LP – regardless of the tax bill. Still, lps would work MARS and spec ops when needed, so I get that…

    • Reminds of natural stone archway down Tucson ways near border..mountainous area. Anyway legend has it the archway is a Portal.

Several Native American “tales” of brothers& cousins playing around said archway – when one of them simply Disappeared upon entering the archway. Nothing – they threw sticks, stones into it – nothing. Marked area as Dangerous/Spirit Land best to be avoided.
Turn of the century later and 2 brothers go out there Treasure Hunting , chasing tales of Spanish treasure, after onerecent discharge -military duty. They found the fabled archway, and along the way found massive deposit (s) of Geodes in near vicinity.

Turns out the Archway, the massive underground crystalline structures, AND specific Planetary alignments – like we got going on now, are key to “Portaling”..

    • To my belief, he ionosphere is refractive, not reflective. Waves bend: they don’t bounce. They can bend in two dimensions at least. This means the various layers can bend a signal to a path well to one side of a strict reflection.

  3. Do you have much insect pressure on your squash and such early in the season? Back at El Rancho de Chaos it was near impossible to get anything until I started to delay planting until mid to late June for those. This will be the first garden at the new ranch and the neighbors don’t offer much information. I have found that by starting twice the initial planting inventory then move to a 2 week starting cycle until summer gives me plenty of replacement plants to put out with way too much time spent putting up shade cloth and insect barriers.
Temps 5 – 10 daily with wind chills in the -15 to -20 range all week.
    Stay safe. 73

    • Bought a box of praying mantis, and set ’em loose in my veg garden back in Connecticut one year.

Hundreds of tiny (each about a half inch long) bright green buglings in the box. Had NO trouble with pest bugs for two or three years. Yeah, they spread out pretty quickly, but enough hang around to get the job done.

Re-treat about every three years. Sooner if you have harsh winters.

      • We had lots of those and walking sticks in the hooptys but they could not keep up with the squash bugs and bean beetles tout in the garden the last few years. I have no idea what to expect here 200 miles north. Another adventure I suppose.

      • In the South Seas, a volcano explodes, causing North Pole icebergs to shift. A 200-foot-long praying mantis, trapped in the ice for millions of years, stirs.

In the Arctic, the mantis attacks an Inuit village. Ned is sent to Red Eagle One to investigate further. Museum magazine editor Marge Blaine gets permission to accompany him as his photographer. All the men at the base, including Joe, are smitten by Marge.

That night, Marge and Joe join Ned in his office and discuss the mantis. The mantis attacks the building. Although the full unit opens fire on the mantis with automatic rifles and a flame-thrower, it is unscathed and moves away only after aircraft encircle it. Hours later, the base remains on red alert. The mantis attacks a boat off the Canadian coast, which means that it is flying at a speed of 200 miles an hour. Ford calls a press conference to announce the mantis’s existence and ask the Ground Observer Corps to track its whereabouts.

An agricultural scientist, played by Graves, successfully grows gigantic vegetables using radiation. Unfortunately, the vegetables are eaten by locusts (the swarming phase of short-horned grasshoppers), which quickly grow to a gigantic size and attack the nearby city of Chicago.

  4. re: a tale of 2 White Houses
    feat: McCain (son of battle)

    Folks,
Last week’s MSC (Munich Security Conference) was attended by an 18 or so strong allegedly ‘nonpartisan’ US Senator group. This was noted by “dpa”, the nonpartisan German Press Agency.

Conceivably seeds of confusion were planted. One of the democrat senators shares a surname of likeness to the official presidential residence. Senator Whitehouse’s website advises that the senators attended under the nom-de-plume “Codel McCain”. Readers were further informed that US institutions are under attack by forces of “oligarchy, kleptocracy, and criminality”. Here is a link to the Press Release of Senator Whitehouse:

    https://www.whitehouse.senate.gov/news/release/whitehouse-graham-lead-congressional-delegation-to-2025-munich-security-conference/

      • Folks,
Following his publicly reported sabbatical by Poland’s “TVP” to the Grand Opera Madam Butterfly Suite at the Capella Hanoi over Christmas, the PM of Slovakia apparently received an audience with The Pope on Valentine’s Day morning. “Vatican News” offered details. (PM Rico has been a target for disparagement by President Zelensky.) The Pope gifted the PM a hard-to-find book: “Persecuted for the Truth-Ukrainian Greek Catholics Behind the Iron Curtain” published by the Ukrainian Catholic University Press of Lviv in 2017. Also gifted was a terracotta artwork entitled “Tenderness and Love”.

The PM in turn reciprocated to the Pontiff. He presented a bronze (ænid?) of two canonized Slavic brothers Cyril (lord) and Methodius (pursuit, journey) whose combined efforts had produced the cyrillic alphabet. Apparently Pope John Paul II installed them as patron saints of Europe in 1980. A picture on wood by a Slovak artist depicting an unnamed guardian angel was also given to The Pope.

        • George,
Thanks for posting the Doged-out “Politico” link to upcoming US-Russian talks in Riyadh.

It seems President Zelensky carried the battle to the UAE on Sunday and Turkey on Monday. Interestingly he was assigned (mystical?) turquoise-carpeted airstairs on arrival at both nations’ airports. The Ukraine President posted video of his UAE arrival along with the First Lady. They were met at the airport by a woman who also hosted their photo-op where the President shared humorous moments.

The Russian entourage arrival at Riyadh was greeted by (royal) purple-carpeted airstairs. The scene appears on the Shanghai Eye channel whose chinese characters translate to “Magic City Eye”. The media outlet is a couple of subsidiaries below Chinese state ownership. The video segment presented the serious matter of Russian-US talks. President Zelensky goes unmentioned. Here is a YouTube link to Shanghai Eye coverage from Riyadh of the arriving Russian entourage.

  5. – 40 C here this morning plus wind chill. Which day is your B day this week so I can send Mich pics. LOL

  6. Another comment on ownership of our devices.

My cell provider is T-Mobile and updates on my device are disabled. The babe at the store helped me confirm updates were disabled back when I bought the phone. She told me it was a bad idea, but I discarded her concern.

Yesterday T-Mobile pushed T-Life to my celly and I had to install the app. There was no way to avoid the install and in order to install I had to agree to their terms. Once installed I was able to uninstall without hitch but I don’t know what I was force-agreed into or what consent I gave them for leaving applets/APIs on my device.

    Where’s Sal?

    • The solution to your problem is an unlocked phone and a Tello account. An unlimited Tello account with tax runs less than $26 a line a month.

  7. Jim in Montana “Temps 5 – 10 daily with wind chills in the -15 to -20 range all week” a proper winter forecast that! We are getting a tad cabin crazy here. I planned to travel to one of the teeny burgs hereabouts but … it’s only 10F with sustained 17mph wind, lots more in gusts that are there spinning up hypnotic SnowNados. Bet N-S roads are drifting closed. Maybe tomorrow we ride? TBD. Stay warm all! Egor

ps – the energy game is on, open front vita drapes and … try to find items to shut off, equalize against cold invited through the panes. Just tryin’ to stay even

    • Window shades and drapes are more effective than most people think,.

Put a thermometer between some cold night, and be surprised.

      • Thermal Drapes work especially well when it comes to Sliders (ie: patio sliding doors) or HIGH windows that are there to let light in but you can’t look out of. It is amazing how much insulation they provide between the inside and outside.

I personally dislike the “tomb” effect of cutting off all light coming in so even though it would probably be more energy efficient to keep everything thing closed up all day long I actually open the blinds /drapes on the windows during the day if I am at home but do keep thermal slider door drapes closed (most of the time)

(around the house big UGLE furry slippers help a lot to keep my feet warm, which keeps my entire body warm)

    • Good plans. I tend to be always crazy myself but I get out enough that it is more towards the batshit rather than cabin type. I got the quad stuck yesterday which means I have to get the big green monster out to recover it which further means she will get all icy and dirty which means the shop floor will get all icy and muddy and it wont get cleaned up until spring thaw.
The house is only 8 years old. 5 BR and 3 baths with ceilings high enough to practice a flying trapeze act in the entry with the Gone With The Wind staircase. It’s just the 2 of us so we have shut off just about every room we can. I don’t have a lot of confidence in the HVAC system but the inspectors told us it was more than able to keep the house comfortable. Well not in these conditions. I see most of the spring and summer will be finding air leaks and upgrading the caulking and insulation.
This is north central Missouri but it definitely feels like a Montana winter.
Diana is happy with the house and that’s all that matters.
I don’t have to tell you to watch yourself in these temps. Bad things can happen quickly.

    • Clear skies and 75° for the next 10+ days here in the land of the confused, might see a few days in the 80s. 2inchs of rain last week but things are still a bit dry, we are quickly running out of winter and our rainy season. I’m not looking forward to hearing all the climate snowflakes crying drought for the next 12 months but I welcome a easy weed abatement year here at Rat Weed Gulch. Stay safe and warm to all you hardy weather warriors out there.

      • Times like this I just duck low and avoid talking about the weather with family back in Wisconsin… or any where else for that matter. I survived growing up in it. Don’t need to grow old in it.

  8. My grandparents didn’t have to do it.., as far as I know.., so why do I have three computer files., eighteen computer links, six catalogues and a hundred page note book – all dedicated to vegetable gardening?

    It’s a vegetable garden! – I do believe I am over thinking this…,

    [ .., but I do have a pretty good garden…,]

I just caught myself looking for a small rototiller.., jeeze !

    • Make it an ELECTRIC rototiller, with extra battery … to go with the 4 solar panels, 2 solar charge controllers (one to use one as a spare, 2 LiFe batteries, and two sine wave inverters (one to use one as a spare) … and you can garden just like your grandparents did!!

  10. Another reason to blank-out cash, root out frauds.

“Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency is pushing for access to an Internal Revenue Service system that retains the personal tax information of millions of Americans for the ostensible reason of rooting out fraud, according to several sources familiar with the effort.”

O/T – the immigrant labor by me (illegals) accept cash or Venmo.

  11. Trump., in his first 30 days, has probably changed the office of the Presidency forever. One of his first acts was to issue an Executive Order to revoked 58 of the former Presidents’ E.O.’s. That will probably become a trend with future Presidents.
So many things he has done in the first 30 days, some needed and some outrageous, has stepped beyond the Oval Office and into the realm of “ME”. Forcing the government to align with his personal views, wants and demands is unprecedented.
I have been around for a few decades and I have never seen anything like this. Nothing compares.
    .., and it is worrisome.
    .
I am having a hard time today staying on track, focusing, concentrated, following-thru.., keep getting lost in ‘totally useless’ information. So.., I am out of here for a few hours – going to get lost out in the art studio..,
    .
Ohh…, the private game I was invited to., at Timberline Lodge.., the date, time and room number has been posted on the Employee’s Bulletin Board. Not exactly “private” anymore. It hasn’t been cancelled – but it’s only a matter of time – once this hits all the participants.

  12. “The data shows that 20.789 million Americans are collecting social security benefits over the age of 100. Drilling down into the age buckets, benefits are still being paid out to folks over 140! ”

    Source:

    https://www.zerohedge.com/political/might-be-biggest-fraud-history

Well, isn’t this a fine kettle of fish the Progressives have gotten us into.
You wonder how all the social justice warriors and Stalinist trolls get paid? Wonder no more. They are getting fraudulent USAID and SS checks. As much as 1/3 of all SS payments are suspect.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jkb6nCK_5KU&t=4s

    • well, if it wasn’t a lie it would be concerning. rather, the data shows that there are 84,000 social security beneficiaries 99 or older receiving benefits, not 21,000,000 as musk lied. https://www.ssa.gov/OACT/ProgData/benefits/ra_age202212.html

when you have the richest person on the planet using one of the largest megaphones on the planet to broadcast lies in order to advance his personal agenda and then the republican victrola runs with the lies democracy is at risk of cracking.

make no mistake, the billionaires are using lies about the SSA to reduce benefits so they can fund tax cuts for themselves. be careful what you wish for.

y’all should be skeptical of any of the crowing about fraud and corruption. where’s the evidence beyond some post on X?

    • Dammit! Is all our ‘longevity’ work for naught if they cut off our benefits at age 100? George predicted this might happen. I may have to walk in to the local office to show face & prove life to pick up my check!

    • n, only the gullible echo chamber consumed with fear mongering would swallow such egregious lies:
      https://www.wired.com/story/elon-musk-doge-social-security-150-year-old-benefits/
The database Musk took the screenshot from listed almost 400 million people, which is more than five times the number of people receiving benefits in 2024, according to the SSA’s own website. It’s also significantly more than the entire US population.

The fact that the Social Security system contains millions of entries from people who are dead is likely distinct from a potential COBOL-caused error, and also not news. A report written by the SSA’s inspector general in 2023 found that 98 percent of those aged 100 or older in the Social Security databases are not in receipt of any benefits. The report added that the database would not be updated because it would cost too much money to do so.

      • I noticed that Elon claimed that $55 billion in leftie giveaway contracts have already been shut down. That’s a good start to the house cleaning.
The SSA record keeping is going to take a long time to sort out properly. The Treasury Dept payments are probably even worse. Elon’s estimates of potential fraud are probably much too high, but a billion here and a billion there, and pretty soon the leftist free money franchisees will be on hard times, and the leftie trolls and arsonists will be looking for new employment.

  13. Definitely not used to dropping in on Weather Underground and seeing that the dewpoint at my house is below zero…

  14. There is a 369yo American who’s receiving Social Security benefits?

Do the Guinness Book of Records folks know?

FTM, do the Guinness Brewery folks know…?

What is Elon Musk’s life expectancy and has it diminished significantly since he discovered nearly 20 MILLION people receiving SS benefits, who’re over the age of 99? How ’bout after he announced the audit of Fort Knox?

    :conspiranut question:

There were unscheduled military flights from the UK to Kentucky, earlier today. Is there a connection?
