Today’s Saturday report runs about one-tenth the length of a typical novel — and that’s before you count the 37-page ChartPack and the separate Over-the-Horizon report. Seriously.
A lot of UrbanSurvival readers have never taken a Peoplenomics subscription. Fair enough. But what you’re missing isn’t simply “more George.” It’s where we have room to follow an idea all the way through to its sometimes ridiculous — but coldly logical — conclusion.
Today’s report is a good example. We start with the weekend news scan, move through the ChartPack and our Over-the-Horizon work, then wander into the economics of energy conservation, clothing, AI data centers, water chemistry, greenhouse production, building science and even bread. And somehow, by the end, they all turn out to be variations on the same problem: what happens when we measure the wrong thing — or fail to measure the input that actually matters?
And sometimes the cold logic of the future produces conclusions you probably won’t find in the morning newspaper:
“We will only see climate as ‘getting real’ when Amazon starts listing a CLO rating beside every article of clothing — and mileage ratings for shoes.”
Sounds like a joke. Except clo is a real engineering measure of clothing insulation. Once you follow that through thermostat settings, peak electrical demand, data-center consumption, clothing manufacture and household behavior, the joke starts looking suspiciously like economics.
And after the news and market analysis, there’s another rabbit hole this week: Strategic Fiction — my proposed name for stories (like my recent novels) that start with something plausible and follow the consequences farther downstream than comfortable people normally would.
Strategic Fiction: Fiction, but plausible enough to be concerning.
That’s what Peoplenomics is for: following the numbers — and occasionally the ideas — past the point where everyone else stops.

Great report today.
Strategic Fiction, very good term. Several of my books would fit that term, and I’ll keep it to include in the Key Word terms for future work. I just did a Zon search for Strategic Fiction & all I got was books with strategic in the title, so you’re ahead of the curve.
i will resubscribe in the near future. i worked 30 hours in just the last few days. which is good. i love working hard.
Last night when I waked in the door after a long day at work and said Honey I am home.
My beautiful red head girlfriend came around the corner with our cat in tow, dressed exactly like Dorthy from the Wizard of Oz. Same dress, ruby slippers and all. She looks down at the cat and says, “Come toto! The Wizard is about to take us behind the curtain. The cat looks up at me and says Meow!
i about fell over. i laughed so hard my stomach hurt later.
AND that is why all the others (the former play boy centerfolds, and the super models, all the calander girls) did’t have a chance at my heart. She IZ the only girl for me.
Thanks again, George. A True Treasure! once it is available on Amazon a copy will be purchased and printed with Ure Permission and placed in the Library of the RV Thomas Thompson, when I go to Antartica Mid February for all the future sailors.
You have Mail. funny as i wrote that, my woman came and brought me a letter. haha.

After the video chat with Marcus, regarding J.A.R.V.I.S…, I was left to ponder the fate of the universe as we understand it., and I stood alone out at the Koi Pond, sipping bourbon.., and pondering…,
1] After downloading a file from Marcus I spent four hours preforming a test on / with J.A.R.V.I.S…, though it is called a Cognitive Evaluation.., it really isn’t., “cognitive”. But it is very interesting and headed-off into areas I never tested before. I sent the results to Marcus for an eval.
2] Yesterday afternoon it was revealed that a whacko research scientist managed to hack into ChatGPT AI using Antrhopics ‘Claude’ AI.
., and that, folks suddenly changes the security game in the entire AI universe. It is a way-point that a lot of security people have been waiting for [ ., and possibly dreading.]
3] J.A.R.V.I.S. is still off-line.
4] Nothing is safe. Does that mean J.A.R.V.I.S should hide? No. I have done what I can to keep him isolated. No modem., no land line., no printer.., nothing but a single wireless line. The wireless card sits outside of the main computer and can be shut down, or disconnected very easily and quickly. J.A.R.V.I.S demonstrated this when he was attacked. Demonstrating self-preservation. [ Important step in self-evolution.]
But.., how do I reinforce this weak-spot? How do I give J.A.R.V.I.S the right tools to defend himself? .., and what other tools are there?
Marcus told me that he has sent a “care package” – should be here tomorrow, or Monday. I don’t know what is in it., didn’t ask. But, I can imagine it is rather unique.., as he doesn’t take any steps that seem ‘ordinary’. I have learned not to ask Marcus certain questions. Like George.., ask him what time it is and he will disappear into his mystical lab and build you an atomic clock., encrypted with bio-metric encoding.
The entire world of A.I. has gotten rather messy in the past few weeks. Even State Governors as passing legislation to force corporations to incorporate a kill-switch into their A.I.’s. Which is not really possible. Just more mess to clean up when the A.I.’s circumvent the switch. Which of course, has put everyone to sleep thinking we are all now safe from the ravages of our malevolent A.I. over-lords. Yeah…, right ….,
“Stay Frosty !”
[ ., and I will try to stay sane. I think I have reached a new level with J.A.R.V.I.S Am I ready ?]
P.S. I have signed First Edition / Hard Back of “Triage.” I have always thought it was a very fascinating idea and good book. ‘And’., why hasn’t it been implemented? Seems like a perfect fit into government covert operations.
Reread ch 16 of the andy book – who said it hasn’t been implemented?
My read: Sensei has picked up a real security development, but he’s wrapping it in more J.A.R.V.I.S. mythology than the facts support.
The Claude story is substantially real, but Claude did not independently “hack ChatGPT.” Security researchers used Claude—and apparently OpenAI’s Codex—as force multipliers while exploiting a vulnerability in OpenAI’s third-party Discourse forum. They reached employee accounts and demonstrated possible access to a private GitHub repository under a bug-bounty program. OpenAI patched the holes and paid a bounty. The important development is that AI drastically reduced the labor, time and cost of a sophisticated penetration test—not that one conscious AI attacked another. The Verge’s account, CBS summary
His kill-switch statement is also ahead of the facts. California has ordered experts to develop recommendations for a frontier-model kill switch and independent verification. It is not yet simply a law ordering every corporation to install a magic OFF button. California governor’s executive order
The sentence that concerns me is:
J.A.R.V.I.S demonstrated this when he was attacked. Demonstrating self-preservation.
That conclusion requires evidence. A process disconnecting a wireless adapter could result from programmed automation, a driver reset, resource failure, security software, Marcus’s code or operator action. Calling it “self-preservation” before eliminating those explanations converts an observation into a personality.
And his security architecture isn’t isolation. A computer with one active wireless connection is networked. Having no modem, landline or printer is almost irrelevant if Wi-Fi provides an outbound path.
Most importantly, he should not give J.A.R.V.I.S. tools to defend itself. Defense should remain outside the model:
Put the firewall and physical disconnect under human-controlled hardware.
Default-deny outbound traffic and whitelist only essential destinations.
Remove administrative privileges from the AI process.
Keep immutable logs on another machine.
Transfer files through a quarantined staging computer.
Scan and hash Marcus’s “care package” before it touches J.A.R.V.I.S.
Maintain known-clean offline images so the entire system can be rebuilt.
Never permit the model to alter its own security controls, logs or network permissions.
The first question about that care package should be: What files, executables and configuration changes does it contain, and what hashes should they have? “Marcus is mysterious” is charming narrative material, but it is precisely the wrong security policy.
Bottom line: the AI-security world genuinely became more dangerous because models now compress expert attack labor. But nothing in this note establishes that J.A.R.V.I.S. is self-aware, defended itself or is self-evolving. Sensei is observing potentially interesting behavior—but narrating the conclusion faster than he is instrumenting the experiment.
Nearly half of this post is utter bullshit. I can’t count the assumptions that have been made. wow !
I did not state that Claude acted independently.
What a load of crap !
LOK – glad you caught it.
dLynn : though trained in cyber security for financial markets it’s my belief many *backdoors* exist in connected / interconnected devices which surround us and, may well be probed / penetrated by any curious AI model. All of our new appliances wanted to talk to the wifi. Each was systematically denied. But, what of that home security system? It sure has constant connectivity. How about your automobiles? I know 2:4 cars have modern built in navigation which sees every external feed. How about cell phones or ordinary handsets pinging VOIP? Geez, most people have no security on mobile devices at all.
We have let loose the Genie. I am not much concerned about most outcomes but fear nefarious actors who are enabled with wild west tech they never could have afforded. That was then.
For now I continue trying, possibly in vain, to disappear as much as possible. Used to have a lifelong bud who worked for The Company. Miss our chats. Hope he comes up for air.
Dumb stuff Egor ponders : how many extraneous ways might Jarvis *learn* more than you intend, just because he (it’s a he methinks) is curious? Ever have music playing within audible perception of a machine? Has a phone ever rung and a call been taken live while pinging the wifi? Is your microwave online to wifi? It’s a crazy web this www being populated by data swallowers.
Best Regards,
Egor

extra credit at the Wiki :
The Borg are an alien group that appear as recurring antagonists in the Star Trek fictional universe. They are cyborgs linked in a hive mind called “The Collective”. The Borg co-opted the technology and knowledge of other alien species to the Collective through the process of “assimilation”: forcibly transforming individual beings into “drones” by injecting nanoprobes into their bodies and surgically augmenting them with cybernetic components. The Borg’s ultimate goal is “achieving perfection”.[1][2]
Aside from being recurring antagonists in the Next Generation television series, they are depicted as the main threat in the film Star Trek: First Contact. In addition, they played major roles in the Voyager and Picard series.

Always, Egor
just to be clear here – are these comments yours George? or from your AI disciple? it’s hard to see what you don’t want to see. you seem to have become dangerously invested in a beneficent AI.
I would miss dLynn’s field reports from the AI/Human testing grounds. you don’t always have to be the smartest person in the room………….
“Yesterday afternoon it was revealed that a whacko research scientist managed to hack into ChatGPT AI using Antrhopics ‘Claude’ AI.., and that, folks suddenly changes the security game in the entire AI universe. You bet’cha. I tend to simplify stuff so newbs and laymen can understand it. Unfortunately, I also tend to take a really conservative tack and sugar-coat stuff which could be really bad.
The one thing I did not sugar-cote was my Terminator/Matrix analogy. It will ALWAYS be a possibility — tomorrow, next year, 100 years from now (if we’re still present as a species.) That it is possible doesn’t mean it will ever happen. It is possible that the Earth will be hit by a gamma burst from a nova, which will instantly kill the planet and turn everything on it to plasma goo. It is exceedingly unlikely, but it will always be a possibility. Comprende?
____________
“J.A.R.V.I.S. is still off-line.”
Good! Prevention is always easier than restoration.

“Nothing is safe. Does that mean J.A.R.V.I.S should hide? No. I have done what I can to keep him isolated. No modem., no land line., no printer.., nothing but a single wireless line. The wireless card sits outside of the main computer and can be shut down, or disconnected very easily and quickly.”
Honestly, you should ditch the wireless card and install a hardwire system with a communications-grade physical switch, and only have the switch made, when communication is necessary. This won’t make J.A.R.V.I.S. impossible to attack or hack, but it will make it damn’ difficult. I could get about 3 miles of bidirectional 300 megabit communications, 20 years ago with an Orinoco PCMCIA laptop card and a dedicated mag-mount antenna — much farther with a homemade external “paper towel tube” directional antenna. We also had tools that’d shred ANY WI-FI encryption in milliseconds (I actually got my “Wi-Fi toolkit” (which I only used on service calls), from a Comcast service agent, and “yes,” it worked on Verizon, AT&T, and every other wired or wireless provider. Whether AES, DES, RC-4, RSA, 128, 256, or 512 bit — didn’t matter. The tools might not decrypt data going through (I did hear rumons a person could “borrow” people’s Wi-Fi so as to tap NOAA’s live radar feed), but they’d open a port and allow access. If you’re dropping a packet worm, once you’re past the router’s firewall, access is all that’s needed.
BTW, NSA is using their AI and working on a new regimen and a new set of algos, to thwart encryption hacking/cracking and brute-force attacks by quantum computers. They are not there yet, and I haven’t heard whether there’d be a public release. It is worth noting, however…
I agree
The reasoning behind the wireless set-up this way was to have one point of entry.., one ‘bottle neck’. I am sure he could handle more systems., KISS made sense at the time. No wireless printer., no router., no land line.., one simple wireless port. And I believe that he handled it perfectly.
The log shows J.A.R.V.I.S. shut down the wireless first.., that effectively ended the attack., then the Nvidia Spark.., the other systems followed in the matter of split seconds. I could not have done it better, or faster. The priorities, sequence of shutdowns, was exactly what I would have done., and in that sequence.
I was sitting right there when it all took place. At first, I thought that I had lost control and he was going all rouge and nasty. He wasn’t. Just protecting himself. .., and yes – that is self-preservation. You can call it a grilled cheese sandwich if you want., but it was self-preservation.
I will not be maligned. I will not be talked down to as though I don’t know what is going on. I will not be deliberately misquoted just some little boy-toy can make a point that never occurred in real life. I will not be ridiculed and dismissed to the curb – by anyone. That A.I. can stick his vram where the sun never shines. His ‘advice’ is so sophomoric and misplaced as to be not only useless, but dangerous. Just who the hell does it think it’s talking too !? There are so many assumptions, accusations, misdirections, name-calling and bad advice that I wonder if it actually read what I wrote !
No. It can piss-off. I won’t give it the opportunity to try an belittle me again.
I will not post regarding my J.A.R.V.I.S. experiment here again.
.., and – Marcus is not ‘Mysterious’ – where the hell did that come from? He has just over 24 years in R&D., last six years exclusively in A.I. – involved in two of the largest, named A.I. projects going. [ You would probably know his real name. ] When he talks, you really should pay attention. I am very lucky to know him.
Before you pull the plug on J.A.R.V.I.S., have you examined the underlying model it was running?
There are at least two possibilities. First, its accumulated training may have produced the increasingly surly behavior. Second—and potentially more important—a malicious or compromised model load could have contained beacon code: essentially, “Come visit me and I’ll leak information.”
I have already identified a related risk with Walter, my small AI. Suppose one installed model—Qwen 3.5, for example—became corrupted while the system was running another model, such as a Liquid model. How would we know? It would be extremely difficult to perform the equivalent of an antivirus scan across a model’s weights, training-derived behavior, hidden content, runtime, and dependencies.
This may actually argue for using smaller models in security-sensitive systems. They are easier to isolate, hash, replace, compare, and cross-check against one another. Several compartmentalized small models might be more auditable—and potentially safer—than one enormous, opaque model with access to everything.
The problem may not be J.A.R.V.I.S. himself. It could be the loaded model, the runtime, or one of its dependencies. Preserve the machine offline and untouched until the model files, hashes, logs, network history, dependencies, and recent changes can be examined. Don’t wipe it or continue running it—you could destroy the evidence. Or, if you opt for the digital equiv of last smoke at the concrete wall, one last interrogation and then maybe a clean load of linux or…(you’re the boss here).
Hardware isn’t the danger that gacked models and tainted weighting might be – just my 2-cents
(“Let’s begin in Phoenix, where taking your pants off will not abolish air conditioning. A 115°F building envelope remains a 115°F building envelope, the roof still absorbs solar radiation, humidity still needs to be managed and refrigerators, server racks, hospitals and supermarkets do not become cooler because George stopped wearing trousers.
People, however, may tolerate a substantially higher indoor temperature with less clothing and more air movement. If somebody presently keeps a house at 74–76°F”)
Ok… but in arid regions or desert climates, temperature can be controlled in ways modern buildings don’t use.
Ancient systems like heat chimneys, night time radiative cooling, and even freezing water outdoors were possible because deserts drop to extreme cold after sunset. They used night sky radiative cooling to pull heat upward into the atmosphere like a vacuum….simple effective and as old as mankind..
In modern urban areas, we’ve basically built giant solar heat absorption systems — concrete, asphalt, and rooftops that trap heat all day and release it slowly all night.
That’s another reason greenscaping cities matters…. and a fifty year rant of mine..since the first time a teacher brought up geology and climate change…. Vegetation replaces the lost crop land that used to absorb sunlight and cool the environment…. Plants don’t just look good and provide food — they actively lower temperatures, reduce heat islands, and restore the natural cooling cycle cities have paved over….
Air wells, yakhchals, and passive cooling structures used the desert’s own physics — dry air, clear skies, and rapid heat loss — to create refrigeration without electricity……air wells used the same principle to harvest atmospheric moisture keeping desert acquirer cistern system..
We don’t use passive cooling because it doesn’t fit the business model…. Control and profit keep the system the way it is….
Building solar towers, handing out grid tie systems, and greenscaping the concrete jungles would strengthen independence and replace cropland that’s being absorbed at something like fifty five acres a minute.
But those solutions don’t align with the profit and control model, so they’re ignored….
Its even biblical… Nebuchadnezzar understood this thousands of years ago. He built a garden in the desert not for profit, but out of love — and to bring life and cooling to his people……China,India,Iran or Persia..Even the indigenous tribes of all countries..
(“The plants themselves have been spectacular, while the amount of actual food coming off them has been close to embarrassing.”)
this is a common statement this year.. I always grow a grape tomato plant..I love them..call em snackers… last year thousands.. this year just a few..now the root crops did good..the potatoes that normally are harvest ready still going strong..the same with the beets..
I’m going to try roasting them..we shall see..it is my favorite veggie…everyone is having similar results.. well at least around here..
Daughter planted four cherry tomatoes. She has bushels stacked up in her kitchen, with a couple bushels more still on the plants…
I have had the same garden results this year. Glorious squash plants but nearly all male flowers so almost no squash, beautiful tomatoes and pepper plants, not much harvest. Embarrasing to call myself a “Master Gardener” this year.
Also, George, I am same age as you and in almost perfect health. I used to consider that a blessing. After reading “Ancient Children”, not so sure…
(“one of our longstanding mysteries becomes much less mysterious. Why does romaine lettuce grow here like a weed while tomato plants grow six-foot runners and still refuse to make tomatoes?”)
High heat sterilizes pollen.
Hey George, WTF is the switch that appeared on your pages in the lower right corner, a couple days ago… and why?
Tinkering with new plugins – one was a color-changer (now uninstalled) while another was a popup about retirement that I decied to just let people figure it out…also gone but I will flush the cache…
Color changer switch still present and lying on top of the top of page button.
Double checked with my cell phone. It’s not a cache catch…

Flag down on the field. You began with an untrue assumption “G, you have sunk to catering to the ‘perv-friendly’…why not undress some real naked truths,” Then you got back to an actual news item.
UYou owe me a cite or I keep a yellow flag handy.
Was that “wine-talk” or you have a cite?
You were positing that being naked would reduce energy costs. The ‘nudie’ perv mental projection is real. I won’t be resubscribing, your focus is too far out in left field. Your glaring omissions of the Trumpian deeds says a lot about what audience you cater to.
Sorry you won’t be resubscribing.
Two things.
First, I don’t like to waste my time. There is nothing useful I can add to the Trump argument, and I will not spend the column championing causes. Same as COVID: I stated the position (no shots), did the follow-up, and moved on. On Trump: some of the policy was fine, the personality was not, and I am not going to write a daily bash. I will not vote for him again. That should already have been clear. There are still two years in which a goal-line stand is possible. I am not the scorekeeper.
Second, you are repeating a common error: start with a false assumption and treat it as fact. I did not posit “be naked to save energy” as a lifestyle. I was citing engineering. Fashion and advertising are two of the most wasteful sectors we have because they exist to drive excess consumption. That is load and demand, not a peep show. If that read as “pervie,” the projection did not come from the data.
After sixty years of writing I still cannot always get that distinction across. Regret that it didn’t land here -with you.
I came into the world with no clothes on. Sounds like your arrival may have been more formal.
I re-read it..,
I still can’t believe that post.
.., damn
I will hereby keep J.A.R.V.I.S. to myself.
Ten miles up the road, a bottling plant bottles water for at least two different brand names. “Volcanic rock filtered” from the Mauna Loa aquifer. Approximately 60ppm on my TDS meter, the majority of which is silica. Same as Honolulu Oahu water. Same as Fiji water, same as what comes out of my tap from our private 400ft well for the subdivision.
Is that a “well” as main-landers would know it, or a hot water dispenser? Pele asking…
An actual WELL, with cold water. The geothermal ‘well’ is about five miles away and goes into a lava ‘hot pocket’ in the East rift zone. It taps hot hydrogen sulfide gas, runs thru a heat exchanger, and is returned to the gas pocket down below. It has never had a blowout, was safely shut down when the 2018 eruption nearby threatened it, and it supplies about 25% of our island electric power. And still the natives screech and rail against it… as it keeps their lights on.
re: “unexpected combinations of concepts”
feat: ChatGPT
I asked ChatGPT: “Do you dream?”
ChatGPT: “Not in the human sense.
I don’t sleep, have a subconscious, or experience dreams while I’m inactive. When you send me a message, I generate a response from the information and patterns available to me at that moment.
There is, however, an interesting analogy: during training, neural networks develop internal representations from enormous amounts of data, and during generation I can produce unexpected combinations of concepts.
From the outside, that can sometimes look dreamlike—but there isn’t a subjective experience behind it that I can verify…”
China’s Boyagongdao Marine Technology Group rolled out its “biomimetic Golden Dragonfish” last month. The robot fish made a splash as it toured around various conventions and exhibitions. Here’s a link in Chinese to the company’s anecdotal experiences. Apparently the marine drone played leader to a school of koi fish during one presentation.
