Ure’s Monday SitRep – Flying Fingers

A heads up: Once again, I’m making an effort to get shorter versions of these morning columns in order to allow more time to focus on shop and electronics bench projects.  Plus, with the upcoming migration of Peoplenomics to a more phone-friendly platform, the longer articles will be there.  As I have stated several times, UrbanSurvival will be slowly sunsetting. Peoplenomics will take its place. I’d like to get the changes made by the end of February when I roll over 76 on the odometer.

Markets, Waffles, and Wars

We developed a unique way of looking at U.S. financial markets in the wake of the Internet Bubble, circa 2020, because of the misleading financial press.  If you’re old enough, you’ll remember the outbreak of EBITDA accounting was followed by the inevitable sell down when companies ran out of cash.  Yes, cash flow matters!

This Aggregate Index of ours hit an all-time closing high on July 16th this past summer, notching 48,605.37.  However, on a weekly closing basis last Friday, we closed at 48,317.32 and the day before (last Thursday) we closed at 48,411.10.  This means (at least in my old man, addled way of thinking, that the market may be going for a double top.  Just 194-points, and change, from a new  record “total wager handle in play.”

In some ways, it’s similar to the post March 2000 highs: The financial press is gushy (terms like “Magnificent Seven“).  But one check of the Truth in Accounting website’s Debt Clock was down only a tad from over $157 trillion in debt to the $156.667 range.  Some of that because of the outsized (and we think political) rate hike giveaway last week,

Oh, and speaking of HS&J (hype, shuck, and jive) you know Bitcoin is still $7-thousand away from a record. But here’s a million dollar BTC prediction in Forecasting Bitcoin’s future: price expectations for 2025.  I have a standing offer to make up “secret numbers” all day long for 21-fiddy each – what you do with them is up to you… Oddly, with no insiders in pocket, no lines outside, yet.

Real News is Out There

Starting with the CFNAI report, though we’ll grant you, it’s not like a new wil Snith movie or something actually entertaining.  Yet, here we see the Chicago Fed report saying the economy is strong – which we told you in advance of the Fed rate call last week.

“The Chicago Fed National Activity Index (CFNAI) increased to +0.12 in August from –0.42 in July. Two of the four broad categories of indicators used to construct the index increased from July, and one category made a positive contribution in August. The index’s three-month moving average, CFNAI-MA3, decreased to –0.17 in August from –0.13 in July.

The CFNAI Diffusion Index, which is also a three-month moving average, decreased to –0.23 in August from –0.11 in July. Thirty-six of the 85 individual indicators made positive contributions to the CFNAI in August, while 49 made negative contributions. Fifty-three indicators improved from July to August, while 32 indicators deteriorated. Of the indicators that improved, 21 made negative contributions.

  • Production-related indicators contributed +0.21 to the CFNAI in August, up from –0.42 in July.
  • The sales, orders, and inventories category’s contribution to the CFNAI was –0.04 in August, down from +0.07 in July.
  • Employment-related indicators contributed –0.01 to the CFNAI in August, up from –0.09 in July.
  • The personal consumption and housing category’s contribution to the CFNAI was –0.04 in August, down from +0.02 in July.

For now, people are being steeped in a hot mess of numbers and predictions, most of which are – or will be proven to be – wrong in the long-term.  Wise people just get to suffer through the wait until the chickens come home to roost.

Which gets us here to Monday and wondering what will happen when people sober up and realize options are over for the month, three or four wars are likely to hot-up in October, and no, Kamala Harris is no friend of working people; having voted to tax tip income for service workers and the like. (This isn’t political on our part – we’re not too thrilled with the conduct of the other candidate, either. But he was better from a Policy standpoint on things like actual borders.  Tomorrow we get Housing stats.

Speaking of Which

We continue profoundly disappointed with the Biden human trafficking (into the US) with, we’re afraid, insufficient vetting and legal authority.  But this whole election cycle is a bad joke based on personality flaws on both sides.  Like, for example, RFK Jr. supporters in swing state could care less about sext scandal — and that’s good news for Trump (nypost.com).

And tell us you aren’t surprised: Nancy Pelosi Accused of ‘Straight Up Lying’ When Confronted About How Kamala Actually Came to Power.  You think?

And selling out or doing the “right thing?” Speaker Johnson axes Trump voting rules in government funding bill (cnbc.com).

The Business of Violence

Not our pick for a growth industry, but war and violence are doing very well.

Next war, please?

Domestic Woes

We see the national media busily soft-pedaling Alabama mass shooting: Search underway for suspects | AP News.  Is this not making headlines because it might be Black-on-Black crime, or does it ruin the Biden-Harris pre-election illusion?  You make the call… Possibly related: Alabama shooting that kills 1, injures 2 possibly linked to mass homicide. Was this driving the string of GCP red dots Sunday?

Around the Ranch: After Action

Ham Radio: The new K4TR 40-meter version of the W5GI Mystery antenna is a really good performer, so far.  On the 80-meter band, it’s better than the 135 foot off-center fed dipole it replaced.  And on the 40-meter band, I’m hearing rarities like Indonesia that are usually much closer to the noise floor.

TQP: Dusted off the Morse this weekend and worked some of the CW contests about.  Washington state had the /SR stations collecting points for the annual “Salmon Run” while Texas was awash in /TQP stations (the Texas QSO Party) which has its own website. Most people never stop to think how the world would operate after EMP, but things like low (and battery) powered ham radio doing Morse with a simple wire antenna up in a tree seems like a good low-cost, high skill investment to get locked in.

On the Electronics bench:  A new handheld LCR tweezer showed up.  I’ll give it a review in a few weekends. It’s a simple way to test small components so we’ll see how it stacks up with an Owon, a Proster, and a DER, These are all devices to tell you the value (and type) of components in a circuit.  Most cirsuits will work with +/- 10 percent component tolerances, but a few hold out for one percent tolerance.  Ease of use becoming the main criteria.

3D Printing: Someone asked “Why waste time on 3D printing skills?”  The answer to that will be along Wednesday on Peoplenomics in “Second Level Prepping.”

Shopping: We have started a shopping ist for Amazon’s net Prime shopping event October 8th.  A few deals are showing up early. But we like to have lead tine to work out what’s really needed (versus what’s wanted or would just be nice) for times ahead.

“Free Beer” Dad is “emailing beer money” to son in law Jason who did the Iron Man in Pasco-Kennewick this weekend.Dedicated fans cheer on hundreds of athletes competing in Tri-Cities Ironman Triathlon (keprtv.com). With that, on to research for the PN article Wednesday and we’re anxious to see fs a little rain will be along. Because down in the GOM the NHC has its eyes on a potential wet spot:

“…this system is expected to produce heavy
rains over portions of Central America during the next several days.
Interests in the northwestern Caribbean, the Yucatan Peninsula of
Mexico, and western Cuba should closely monitor the progress of this
system. Later this week, the system is forecast to move generally
northward across the eastern Gulf of Mexico, and interests along the
northern and northeastern Gulf Coast should also closely monitor
the progress of this system.

We will be “throwing and sowing” some perreniel clover for the deer and some Waltham 29 for the upright apes around here. (That’s broccoli…)

I’m toying with a new way of looking at voting, opting opt. Voting endorses the system. If I vote for Kam or Trump and the other candidate wins I have to suck it up. My candidate lost. Better luck next time.

In simplest terms, Trump endorsed DeWine. DeWine is supposed to be a anti-illegal. Somehow a batch of Haitians landed in Ohio and instead of refusing them/booting them out once discovered he’s appealed to the Biden administration for Fed-Bux. This means the newcomers are here to stay.

I’m sure everyone is aware of the topper, Ohio is supposed to be the Reddest of the Midwest – Constitution and all that – and locals are supporting the newcomer Haitians:

Ohio residents flock to Springfield’s Haitian restaurants: ‘They are family’

Locals support and volunteer at Haitian-owned businesses to stand against Trump and Vance’s anti-immigrant lies

In terms of new highs in the aggregate people love free and it’s never going to stop no matter who wins. It’s no longer fun attempting to fool ourselves.

    • A $ reset changes everything[ which is a biz model, cred to Mr. Ure].

When the grift liquidity dries up, so will all of the political feel good attitudes about flooding the states with illegals. That source of free cash flow from .gov that the illegals bring for the folks that benefit from providing the housing, temp shelters, smartphones, transportation and medical for same.

You see all of the sectors of the service economy that need to be juiced to compensate for not manufacturing anything of real substance at a factory?

      Whither the vine.

      • No doubt you are correct. The $ could go at any moment or it somehow changes then persists for another 50 years. A complete takeover with UBI is what I see. The alternative is wheeling back to the 1600’s Starving Times.

    • Same with Abbott in Texas.

The border patrol squeaked and leaked that ObiddenKamola let in terrorists on the s. border BUT then ALSO said they were flying 2 or more plane loads into Texas, each night!!!!

Why didn’t Abbott raise a stink to high heaven???

Cause he’s a certified Freemason WEFER light worker (AKA Lucifer) and they are ALL in it together.

      States Rights are stripped.

      • (“squeaked and leaked that ObiddenKamola let in terrorists on the s. border BUT then ALSO said they were flying 2 or more plane loads into Texas, each night!!!!

Why didn’t Abbott raise a stink to high heaven???”)

Exactly… then when you check on OFFICIAL provable news.. the administration will come out and prove that they have the border under control.. then when an official visit goes to the border.. all you see is barely anyone.. so seriously.. was there a border issue.. all the things we have been told are not provable just what we heard and read… My kids think I have been smoking what I think everyone else is smoking lately and being sucked into fear porn..
if you search official news.. G even proves it in the released accounting output charts and graphs and the news.. all the rest of it comes from questionable resources from outside the USA..Officially and provable is that the Biden Harris administration is a raging success.. the only place that what I believe to be true things are.. is at the checkout… shadow games.. and then the clinker.. if things are so bad.. why wouldn’t this entice our congressmen to deal with the huge issues the same huge issues that the liberals say don’t exist? none of them thought that it was worth their time and energy to do their jobs..
take the mountain of evidence on the Brand and all that.. Now I have read most of the stuff and yup I believe that the kid and brother should be in prison for their business ethics.. but there wasn’t enough concern over the issue to entice anyone in congress to work on it.. just use it for a campaign issue.. its business as usual..
the analysts threats reports.. why didn’t they read them.. and if it is true that the biden harris administration allowed in a hidden trojan army.. they and their families would be in direct danger as politicians.. not one of them is rushing to address that so do they know that it is just a fake shadow game to get votes during an election year.. make the administration look bad so they can get elected in.. theres no proof that any of it exists all we have is a few prices that have gone up drastically and these all are being passed onto the trump administrations actions while he was president ..
what is true.. what is fake.. we can assume it and say it but none of it is provable.. our information is not coming from trustable news entities.. and similar to what one person told me.. I didn’t know him.. it came up in a conversation.. why would he just tell me that unless it was to get me to believe that the liberal left was deceiving the public and the economy for a campaign years popular dead horse issue… NO ONE stayed in DC to work on any of this fake news stuff.. none of them have made any reference to the potential threats they and their families face if any of what they are telling anyone is true.. why wouldn’t they.. if it was true.. its the allegory of the cave..
        https://youtu.be/eul2NE0iRfY?si=0FqISW4N6lcOFwpT

    • I haven’t voted for decades. It does no good. I once registered as a Republican for Ron Paul for the primary here. Lot of good that did.

      • I like Rand Paul and Ted Cruz but neither of them are stepping forward.. its a shadow game .. it was quite convinceable.. Now I see C’s side of this.. what she has been saying is all provable.. the charts show exactly that to..
It took a gentleman in DC that I have known for years that does have a finger on the pulse that initially had me thinking that the kids are right.. if they aren’t then it will come as a shock to everyone.. because none of what we have been believing from material that we have read is provable..

    • “Locals support and volunteer at Haitian-owned businesses to stand against Trump and Vance’s anti-immigrant lies”

Or… is it a case of ‘If we can’t beat ’em, we gotta join ’em’ ??

    • Since when is “The Guardian” a reliable news source for anything?

It is a oneworlder neomarxist rag, the prime directive of which is the elimination of the sovereignty of the United States.

Next time I go to Columbus or Indy I’ll budget a couple hours to hang out in Springfield (actually, George’s consigliore could do this easily, since he’s only a half-hour away) but until such time, I’m not believing anything I read or hear — especially not from a source I KNOW is both truth-challenged and heavily Cameltoe-biased…

Ya know George, after watching Clif’s “Idiot” video, I’m not sure what to believe. I didn’t believe a lot before watching it but, he kind of solidified my skepticism. We’re being bombarded with bullshit and I’m in the mood to throw my papers in the air and walk away from my desk.

You know I feel exactly the same way.. my kids and grandkids have all been thinking I slipped off a curb and bumped my noggin and everything is not true..
then it was dLynn and Mark that totally got me thinking about it.. along with a guy I know in the DC area.. he had just told me that everything I have been reading is propaganda to discredit this administration.. so just like with C posting information from a statistical area proving the information being posted by outside sources.. there is nothing to indicate that anything we have been told is real.. including being overwhelmed by people claiming there is an influx of illegals.. the ties to the negatives is all from someplace else or the republican party .. so what is true and what isn’t everyone tells me you can say it enough but show me the proof.. when you look at Peoplenomics and the graphs.. its showing the opposite of what we are assuming to be correct information.. IF.. it was so serious why hasn’t our Congress or our agencies done one thing to curb it.. they all say it isn’t so.. real mind bender there.. are the kids and the networks correct.. or are the information sources that start in countries we would not consider as very friendly are they correct..

      • “there is nothing to indicate that anything we have been told is real.. including being overwhelmed by people claiming there is an influx of illegals..”
I’m not sure where you reside precisely, but it isn’t in Texas.

        • My kids have gone on vacation to mexico several times.. heck the daughter takes off for there tomorrow.. and the grand daughter just came back.. they haven’t seen anything that even resembles a run on the border.. which they come back and tell me I am nutz.. nothing that is being reported is obvious.. yet.. even the mainstream media is saying more than the average..
we hear it ,, we read about it.. we see films showing a great deal.. but nothing when someone goes there and according to the administration it is under control..

        • @LOOB

“My kids have gone on vacation to mexico several times..”

Are they going to Tijuana or Acapulco? Matamoros or Cancun?

When one of them spends a week in Nuevo Laredo or Piedras Negras, get back to us. In the meantime jetting to Cabo or Veracruz is in the same league of relevancy as Cammy responding to “You haven’t been to the border” with “and I haven’t been to Europe…”

        • “When one of them spends a week in Nuevo Laredo or Piedras Negras, get back to us”

I will do that Ray…the one daughter and her husband go all over..next w eek all the girls are going on a girls time out.. they don’t see a problem going out of the country..the one heads for Peru in january.. I am going to give her a go pro to film the ruins..its the only way I will ever see them.
happily they took mom to a vineyard a year ago and she had a blast.
          lol I haven’t been anywhere..
that why my obituary reads I went on vacation..lol anyone reading is going to wonder where in the hell I went..
I haven’t confessed to them that the new hunting dog puppy spends his whole day with me lol..
the poor thing is a baby and he’s afraid I will spoil it..( probably will to can’t help myself)

        • They work real hard at keeping their destinations from me..they figured I will give them a long lecture on their vacation destinations.. and they probably would.. my mini me in college will squeal so will my little tiger..she was my shadow growing up..
she was the one that just got back..
some resort but I don’t know which one..

So, I’m apparently missing something here:

Trump phoned Zelinsky to enquire about Creepy Joe’s crookedness and got impeached for using the Z-man “for election interference.”

Harris flew Zelinsky to a “battleground State” where the Z-man checked out a rack of 155s, then gave a campaign speech for Harris/Walz. Zelinsky is apparently touring the U.S. for a week or so (currently with Penna Gov Shapiro) to stump for Cackles McKneepads.

Something is wrong with this picture, but I can’t quite put my finger on it.

I don’t suppose anyone here could help me out…??

  3. 2,000-Year-Old Cache Of Roman Silver Coins Found Hidden Inside A Wall And Under A Boulder On A Remote Sicilian Island…

    https://allthatsinteresting.com/pantelleria-sicily-roman-coins

    Silver used to be money.

President Kennedy issued Executive Order 11110 in 1963 which amended Executive Order 10289 to authorize the Treasury Department to issue silver certificates backed by silver reserves, effectively stripping power from the privately-owned Federal Reserve to issue currency. This would have transferred the power to create money to the government and prevented the national debt from rising. Five months later, Kennedy was assassinated. The executive order was never repealed or amended by subsequent presidents and remains valid law, though it was not enforced after Kennedy’s death.

    • yes like most metals.. they were carried to be traded to metalsmiths for useable goods.. just like the knife guy.. when I was little a knife guy would show up to sharpen tools twice a year..if you didn’t have money you could trade him an old knife to sharpen another one.. then he would use that knife to sell to someone that didn’t have one..
in the event of a nuclear exchange of any kind or a total collapse of the grid.. which would you carry.. a few pounds of metal.. hoping that you could find someone to sell it to..

    • There has been a rumor floating around for a few months that the security of burner-phones – isn’t. That since three, or four years ago, everything you do on a burner phone is being up-loaded to a server. It’s built-in to the phones. Can’t be found and can’t be removed.
Makes sense., but the logistics of that is a bit mind boggling. Even with A.I. assistance, just how many personnel would be required to sift and filter through that massive amount of information – on any kind of timely relevance. As part of a forensic investigation., yep – that would work pretty well.., but “right now” intel ? I am not too sure on how effective that would be.

    • Last night I was researching Psoriatic Arthritis meds prices at GoodRX. (They are disgustingly expensive). This morning at dawn my cellphone gets a text image advert. from a pharmacy group I never heard of. Sheesh.

Conduct your life like this is the truest thing you’ve ever read and you’ll be fine.

d’Lynn, the way to use a burner phone is once… And then you destroy it and dispose of the pieces. (And you also need to read the preceding sentences…) What the burner gives you is untraceability, not anonymity, and even then, you must assume an agent or agency can eventually, if sufficiently-motivated, trace (or at least triangulate) your location at the time of the call, find your image on a security cam, and connect you to the conversation through voiceprint analysis.

not according to the official statistics.. it is fake news..
I suspect them to be true or have a base in proof but officially it doesn’t exist. Everything that has been released is officially determined to discredit this administration on their unwavering success in all things.. a few bad apples.. but nothing that should be addressed as serious.. we can see that by the actions of all the parties in congress.. if it is so bad.. why aren’t they working on it.. instead they are sitting at home or some resort campaigning that they are the magic man or woman to fix the woes of the world..We can assume that there is some truth to it but in reality there are no research materials to actually say here ya go saying it doesn’t actually make is a real… see I told you so.. that doesn’t include a news source coming from a country outside the USA.. which brings up the question.. • ” is it true..

      .
.., and there-in lies the problem. “Official statistics.” ., have been shown, repeatedly, to be ‘un-true’. Just take a look at the recent ‘adjustment’ to the new jobs reports. They reported 68,000 new jobs created every month, that never existed., but it was an “official” report on the job growth and the economy.
How can we accept, or rely on any numbers from the government ? They just proved that we are fools for doing so .
Be very careful what band-wagon you jump-on. Even if the music is enticing at the moment.

      • Exactly…
what I thought to be true is being shown to be totally wrong.. and those to defend the people that were hired to serve and protect not concerned about any of it..
the deeper I dig the more confusing it gets.

        • If you wish to KNOW, you will have to LEARN. In order to learn, you will have to research. When a writer lies once, you need to assume they will do so whenever it suits them, and are therefore not to EVER be believed. I don’t assume CNN is unreliable. I assume every one of its reporters, anchors, and pundits whom I’ve caught telling a lie (that’d be ALL of them, at one time or another), to be unreliable. ‘Same as any other news outlet. You can’t make that call unless you’ve researched enough stuff on enough topics that you can catch talking heads when they fib. Unless you’re part of the “underwear squad,” you will never have time to research their blather after the fact, unless you do that and only that, to the exclusion of all else.

Now, I can’t assume a lie with the wire services, and it is oftentimes not possible to discover the writer of a press release, so anything that comes off Reuters or AP (or UPI, AFP, Scripps-Howard, etc.) has to be researched and back-traced until witnesses to the incident being reported are found and their exact interviews are read. It is a royal PITA, and I’ve been doing it ever since George Soros broke the Bank of England.

I have also sifted through tens of thousands of “conspiracy theories” and can pick the truth out of the vast majority of them at a glance (but I’ve been doing THAT since FIDO:CONSPIRACY was a thing — long before Soros became a billionaire OR a danger to freedom worldwide.) That’s how I’ve known for 32 years now, that the Southern Poverty Law Center was a communist organization, and never to be trusted. Because the SPLC is never to be trusted, it stands to reason that anyone who cites them as an “expert” or references them as a “source” is likewise never to be trusted, because they’re either communist-influenced themselves, or too lazy to discover what the SPLC is or too stupid to know why it matters.

          See how this works?

        • (“Now, I can’t assume a lie with the wire services, and it is oftentimes not possible to discover the writer”)

there are several think tank agencies that do nothing but go through the issues.. these agencies I trusted.. or thought I trusted.. then in the book the hidden life of billionaires.. there is a section in there were to get the business to go their way they would play both sides of the market.. the example was.. building refineries for gas not only in the USA but in Germany and Russia.. either way they win.. and they had the think tanks set up one to play one side another to play the other sides.. all of the think tanks I trusted for information was owned by the same people .. playing the side in their business model of they won’t fail with either outcome.. this example was in the WSJ a while back.. the front page stories in one section of the country that leaned in the Red.. all indicated Red direction of thought while the same days front pages in a Blue section of the country reflected the information that would deal with their political and business alignment.. shadow games.. who do you believe..we are all being herded in the direction they want us to go..

        • @LOOB

“there is a section in there were to get the business to go their way they would play both sides of the market.. the example was.. building refineries for gas not only in the USA but in Germany and Russia.”

Gas isn’t refined, and there has not been a refinery built in the U.S. since 1979.

You wouldn’t happen to have a link to “the hidden life of billionaires” would you?

I suggest you find some better information sources. The ones you have seem, somehow lacking…

      • a friend heading to Arizona actually went into Mexico by accident.. they didn’t have a passport .. they just drove in the wrong direction.. they were stopped coming back by the border guard.. explained their situation..
they said to me.. I didn’t see any of what everyone is talking about.. that was just a few weeks ago..

        • Arizona doesn’t have border jumpers in the middle of summer. When it’s 118° in the shade, and there isn’t any shade, a human can not carry enough water to survive.

How did your friend cross the border into Mexico without showing his passport to the Mexican authorities?

        • “How did your friend cross the border into Mexico”

that I don’t know..they were heading a city and got lost. ended up on the Mexican side.. on their way back is when they were stopped by the border patrol.
their paycheck wasn’t automatically deposited ( I think because of a holiday ) and they ran out of gas on their way home.. called for help and told me about their harrowing adventure lol lol..

      • George, I really hope you’ll keep Peoplenomics optimized for normal PCs and large screens! I realize that catering to this market and that of the silly small screens is double the work, but I see no point at all in reading a depth article on a small screen without being able to concurrently bring up a bunch more tabs on the same or an adjacent monitor. Currently I have well over 4000 open tabs(don’t ask) on this browser alone. Even for normal folks, I’d think you’d have to be really stressed to limit yourself to a 2″x 6″ screen!

        • These new platforms can resize properly for various screen sizes. So while its good on a cell phone it will / should be great on a large screen as well.

I hope the comment section will still be free to view. I enjoy the whole site but deffo like reading the comments.

  5. Cash Flow ? You talking Cash flow ? What are you the new Oracle of Palestine ?!? Oh wise and wonderful Oracle – pray tell what direction my latest SoI (stockofinterest) goes today?

Moar specifically how high can INTC go ? Take Out ? Take Over? Merger ? Not like Chynah going to be allowed to buy it, no siree I would think NOT. But Xi does have a special relationship with pedo joe, so you never know, do we?

  6. Second quarter GDP reading due Thursday and Friday is the scheduled release of the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) index, the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge.
Though I personally do not trust, nor believe the government’s GDP reports anymore., what I believe matters not. What do the money managers believe? They can, and do throw billions in any direction they so chose to add a dime to the bottom-line.
The stock markets may be a bit “sluggish” and range bound until Friday morning.

    • “What do the money managers believe?”

They are not as bright as you, but they may have more insider information than that to which you are privy.

Chances are, they are completely aware of the health, wealth, and direction of our economy. They will ALL play the game however. We have become a society which does not accept responsibility, but instead, assigns blame whenever there’s a fuckup. The managers get paid whether their investment tanks or not, but none wants to have his(her) own paragraph in every history book published for the next 200 years, blaming them for causing the panic which caused the “Greatest Depression…”

  7. I just bought a water distiller and was surprised to find that it takes 3.5 hours to run through. The city where I live sent out notices about some lead pipes in the water system and I thought distilled water would be better in our coffee/tea. I didn’t know the process took so long.

I also bought 2 cases of canned potatoes, and a case each of can green beans and carrots. Even though I’m mostly eating beef other family members aren’t, and I have always been the person responsible for stocking up so I don’t mind filling in the gaps in can goods and a few odds and ends. I used alot of my baking supplies in candy/cookies/muffins/pies for the local fair so I replaced some of my normal stock. I don’t think brown sugar and chocolate chips ever go bad and are nice to have on hand. I always have some instant rice, cake mixes, and instant mashed potatoes in the house for no electricity days. Cake mixes mixed with applesauce or canned pumpkin or other can fruit make quick sweet pancake/muffin like cookies in a frying pan. When I lived in the mountains of Pennsylvania it was common to have a week or two without power due to downed trees and power lines.

I’ll be curious about what you’ll stock up on Amazon in the way of food items.

      • Thanks. That was nice of you. I’m probably a $39 purchaser. Haha. George mentioned using distilled water to improve health and I thought I’d try it, but didn’t buy one until there was possible lead in the local water. I heard that there are six watermain breaks currently in our city.

        • Distilled water can be good on occasion if you need to leach something from your system. Lead and most other impurities can be removed with a Burkey style filter, and I even use one to filter tap water. The Burkey won’t filter dissolved minerals that make for hard water, and we do need some of those minerals. Distilling will leave those minerals behind. It’s good to have both for their respective abilities. Unfortunately, only distillation(or RO) will remove fluoride, and there’s no good reason at all to drink fluoridated water. If you think you need it for your teeth, then brush with a fluoride toothpaste. That’s the only known possible value of fluoride biologically.

    • re: water production – take a look at this item:

Geekpure 3 Stage Portable Aquarium Reverse Osmosis RO Drinking Water Filter System-100 Gallons per Day
      Item # B07H2TSNZM

      It runs ~$50 and a complete cartridge/filter change-out would be another ~40.

A friend of mine just purchased one of them and gave it a test run without any problem. A distiller is fine (have own/used one in the past) but the RO unit only requires water pressure to run.

    • My Berkey (and many similar gravity filters) remove over 99.9% of heavy metals, but most retain beneficial (ionic) metals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium. The Berkey is very thorough, and very slow. With a full complement of four cartridges, it will make about 4.5 gallons of water per day. Its water tastes almost identical to Evian water though. My Zerowater pitcher filters darn near everything (including 100% of lead, IIRC), and is cheap. However its water tastes like distilled water. I don’t drink RO or distilled water unless I have to, simply because I don’t like the taste. Grandpa had an Artesian well and I grew up on it. I have a conventional well and consider my Berkey water from it, a treat.

      YMMV

      • Those are nice. My mom has one pour the water in and ready to go. Might be a good way or additional way to go Eleanor

  8. Birmingham SitRep
What we can glean from “news” and Word-of-Mouth so far.
Last shooting we discussed here was 5 dead/some wounded at a waiting line at a Black owned and Patronized Club in a Black neighborhood.
This time is happened in the fashionable 5-Points
    entertainment area near UAB/Hospital/shopping etc.
    Main moneymaker for Birmingham.
The bar is one of several in a line of storefronts in a sort of grotto below sidewalk level on 20th Street (main Entertainment and Restaurant drag downtown, address 2012 Magnolia). The shooting was at one of three bars (Sport bar/cigar bar/speakeasy) all owned by the same retired Birmingham Cop.
Lines at the door for Said Cops Strict security (Metal detectors/pat downs/purse searches).
The sitting duck line was outside when a car pulls up, 3-4 people disembark, form a line, and shower down on the patrons.
This was the MO at a birthday party in a small town outside Birmingham (far out, farm community) where several shooters were seeking a rival drug lord. In that case several died but not the target, and nearly 20 or so wounded.
In this case the police believe this was a paid hit (how do they know that?) on a target in the crowd, who police believe is one of the four dead (how do they know that?).
The Mayor Randal Woodfin, made a lengthy statement decrying the lack of home rule in Alabama, because he believes the problem is all the guns owned by White Jefferson county suburbanites. That is partly why Birmingham’s political elite do not have home rule.
The belief was that “Glock Switches” wew used(a device attached at the back of a Glock Slide that converts the pistols to full auto fire.) 100 shell cases were recovered (Glocks have available 33 round extension magazines, which are popular for those that don’t know how to use their gunsights and don’t care anyway.)
This is the MO not only here, but in many cities. The firing squad will quickly line up and shoot the whole crowd in a line, a food mall, a church, a city street, just hoping the target in the crowd is one of the victims.
This is receiving big attention because this area is where the revelers go after big football games (UAB has its own team and stadium now, and is getting a following.) This will lose the city Big Money if the shooters are not caught and the reason and target are not completely identified and explained.

    • In my (small) town, this is the first school year in the last five, where there wasn’t at least one off-campus shooting. The first couple weeks of school the pushers roll in from Chicago, St. Louis, Richmond, Buffalo, and likely all points in between, and they hold a mini turf-war to sort out their respective territories. 4 years ago, we had a drive-by the first Friday at an off-campus party, where several people opened up on the house and put 70-some rounds through the walls & windows. I believe only 1-2 persons died, but several more were critically injured. The cops called that a “hit” and I believe eventually caught two (but not all) of the perps.

  9. Taiwan Semiconductor [ TSMC ] and Samsung are eyeing a new mega chip factory in a joint venture. Sounds good. But I have a question. Why are they looking to build it in the UAE ?

      • They certainly have sand, though whether or not it’s good enough to refine for pure silicon is anyone’s guess. Fabs can have their environmental issues – lots of pure chems needed of all descriptions. I don’t know how safe they are from earthquakes – 2nm processes certainly don’t like shaking. Of course, there’s the other aspect of warring tribes, etc.

  10. Last week I recharged all the consumer batteries, including spares. I upgraded my tubes on my main bicycle as well. It was serviced a few months back and is in excellent condition.
I have my normal fuel stock; maybe I lay in a can or two of gasoline, which I don’t normally do.
I prepay utilities and some comms; maybe I put some extra in. Water I keep paid up 3 – 6 months ahead. I can do without a lot of things for an extended period, but without water, things turn ugly really quickly. `
This is a good week to top off stocks of quick turn over consumables. Food and condiments, hygiene, and medical supplies look like good things to check stock on.

Too many things going on out beyond the gate to zoom in on one scenario. Being able to operate with limited resupply through the end of January would be a general goal.

    • Good Idea, especially with an east coast/gulf dock workers strike looming in a week or so. A two week strike could set the supply chain back to 2025. Although not involved in the dock workers negotiations, I am always acutely aware that our island supply ships could stop arriving at any time. Be prepared.

    • If laying in gasoline … get the Ethanol Free variety and then treat it. It will last MUCH longer than the Ethanol version.

Here we have one retailer that sells the Ethanol Free variety at all of their stations so it is easy to find (though pricey), but elsewhere it may be much more difficult to source.

Some boat marinas also sell Ethanol Free gasoline because of the water condensation issue in the tanks with gasoline that has ethanol in it, but be sure to call ahead to see and then when you show up see what the pump actually says.

If none of that is available your local airport will have 100 octane Low Lead gasoline available (expensive), which is Ethanol Free. Not as good an option but still better than any gasoline with Ethanol in it for long term storage

      • The 100 LL option is good for small engines or even gasoline powered tractors, but you don’t want to use it in a car with a catalytic converter except in an absolute emergency! Low lead is not no lead, and it can poison a catalyst rather quickly.

I don’t know of anywhere in central NM that still has ethanol free pump gas. Maverik had it when they first came to the state, but then they changed their alternate selection to E85.

      • Hawaii cut back it’s ‘requirement’ for E85 gas. We don’t make ethanol here, and were sending a lot of money to the mainland to get it to pollute our gas here. So E-free options are readily available here. But the local Texaco station offers four selections at the pump. One hose for E-free 89, the other hose selectable for 87, 89, & 92 octanes, labelled “may contain up to 10% ethanol”. But if you look at the ground tank hatches, there are only THREE tanks underground. So the 89 E-free is 20 cents a gallon more than the ‘standard’ 89 other selection. Guess which one I buy? I’m betting they both come out of the middle 89 tank.

        • I’m betting they both come out of the middle 89 tank.

          They do not.

There will be a tank of 87 octane gasohol and one of 92 octane gasohol. The pump blends these to get the 89 octane gasohol. Do you not remember the Sunoco “custom-blended” gas pumps that came out in the early 1970s with a dial on the side? They dispensed 89, 91, 93, 95, 97, and 99 octane petrol.

Watery areas use lots of real gas because outboards (and many inboards) require it…

  11. Israeli Air Force hits 800 targets in the last 24 hours. [ABC & NBC News]
EIGHT HUNDRED !?? How could there possibly be that many viable targets left after the pounding Israel has given Lebanon over the past few days ?
.., Damn ! That looks like all-out war to me.
So.., while everyone is watching the chessboard to the North – what is coming at Israel from the East and South ? [ Possibly even Egypt to the West ?]
The view from my perspective – is that this entire region – a dozen countries, is very close to exploding into an all out war with Israel being attacked from “every-which-way-but-loose”. , and right now it looks as though it wouldn’t take much to get those fires burning. Not much at all.
Leaving Turkey, Russia and China – with the USA.., exactly where?

    • US backed out of it – Military squashed winkinblikin&nod after back channel call frm Moscow.

Brit-German thing now, with all little nato countries playing chicken hawk on RUSsia..boom boom out go the lights.

Coming together ever so slowly, whatever could they be waiting 4 ?

Up Next – Twilight Zone..you wont believe what Time (s) it is.

    • Sometimes nations and their population go off on an EMOTIONAL WAR HIGH … which is where I would put elements of the Israel population and government at the moment.

Like any Junkie it takes MORE AND MORE of the “drug” for them to get their “Fix”. We saw that with the population and leadership of both Germany and Japan in the lead up and early stages of WW-2. Israel looks like it may have started down the same path of being a Junkie needing bigger and bigger Fixes to feed their cravings. Dangerous times in the near future is that is true wrt Israel’s greater society and leadership.

    • Yo D. Greetings and salutations.

Years ago, Clif wrote in “Israeli mistake” something very similar to some of your comment. Clif said, Iran … but perhaps it’s actually Lebanon, who herself doesn’t fire a shot to retaliate. (But some angry Arabs are shooting from there.) … and Israel gets attacked from all sides.

      Hmm, why?

From the Times of Israel …

      https://www.timesofisrael.com/as-hezbollah-pummels-north-lebanons-christians-divided-on-support-for-terror-group/

The second and third paragraphs gave me a WTF Moment. I wasn’t expecting it to end the way it did. –
I thought, (he continued, without explicitly naming Israel, either.) Hmmm. More land?

I guess it depends on perspective.

And now I have a migraine and will be resting the rest of the evening. ;)

    • Israeli Air Force hits 800 targets in the last 24 hours…
…How could there possibly be that many viable targets left after the pounding Israel has given Lebanon over the past few days ?

Hezbollah has ~1800 launch facilities and (by UN estimates) ~120,000 rockets aimed at Israel. They are not a small-time militia, regardless the spin the media tries to attach to them. Nobody knows for sure, but Hezbollah may number in the hundreds of thousands, and they are some of the most vile, nasty, and dedicated fighters on the planet.

I don’t believe either Egypt or Syria will buy in and take chips. Egypt has benefitted greatly from its Israeli peace arrangement. IMO Russia will keep Assad on the sidelines. Syria can not withstand the fury of a desperate Israel for more than a day or two and its port is too valuable to Russia for them to lose. They also don’t want war with Israel because multifront wars where a combatant is not in-theatre in-force are rarely logistically-viable and Ukraine is keeping them busy.

Turkey might, though. Erdoshitcan is doing his best to rhyme with Franz Joseph I. I can see Turkey sending a disposable diplomat into Lebanon and getting him executed (à la Archduke Ferdinand), either by the Israelis or by a captured IDF rifle.

What happens if Israel, our closest ally (with Biden having alienated the Brits), is attacked by a NATO nation (with whom we’re also allied?) Erdogan is a pompous ass and a megalomaniac. D’you suppose he realizes he can create WW-III in a matter of hours?

        • Yes, but he’s not privy to the launch codes and they are guarded by U.S. personnel. Were he to “nationalize” (confiscate, appropriate, etc.) them, he could certainly make some dirty bombs, though…

  12. The right wind folks who dream dreams say a big blow up north of isreal is start of WW3. Russia has to much to loose.

  13. Hi, regarding the plastic bag ban, they did that in Québec a few years ago. What happened? No increase in spread desease as far as i know. But, first, we had to start bying “reusable bag ” since they don’t provide free one (still made of plastic for most or cotton… no so planet friendly)… and since we forget them most of the time, we keep on buying them over and over ( and accumulating them… again, not so nice for the planet). Second, for the first time in my old fart lives (55), i had to start buying small garbage plastic bags since we couldn’t use the supermarket one anymore. Soooo, we end up buying the grocery bags AND the garbage one to replace the free supermarket ones. As Tom Petty use to sing “All the boys upstair want to see, how much you’ll pay for what you use to get for free”. Have a nice day ;)

  14. George,
For the 100+ trillion dollar world ACWI index, today was day 12 of a 14 day 6-25 Sept 2024 growth fractal (which is the 3rd fractal of a 5 Aug 8/17/14/10 day fractal series ending with 10 day 4th fractal nonlinear devaluation ending 8 Oct) and day 4-5 of 6 of a 3/6-7/4-5 of 6-7 day final growth fractal ending 25 September.

A 12-13 15-minute unit first fractal base formed at the end of today’s trading day with an expected 12-13/27/27 (15-min) unit growth fractal ending near the end of the trading day 25 September.

    • im not the only one who looks at his posts and my eyes glaze over. I know hes talking about fractals and repeating
      Like here “12 of a 14 day 6-25 Sept 2024”
Im thinking hes looking at a 14 day fractal and we;re in day 12 of 14 but then 6-25 sept 2024 eyes start to get a little glazy

Then your eyes and brain fail you glance here “10 day 4th fractal nonlinear devaluation ending 8 Oct) and day 4-5 of 6 of a 3/6-7/4-5 of 6-7 day” and its just to much my pee body brain cant cope help

      • I would love to understand fractal economics too! I’m still trying to wrap my head around the finer points of Elliot waves and tea leaf graphs! Perhaps there’s a good resource to read in our “spare” time.

      • “today was day 12 of a 14 day 6-25 Sept 2024 growth fractal “-
Translation- The last sucker in the current rally lays down his last leveraged dime on Wednesday of this week.

“ending with 10 day 4th fractal nonlinear devaluation ending 8 Oct)”

Translation- That which has gone up will be coming back down by October 8.

      • No, brother Ray was catching me on a too busy day. I was cleaning the drool off the screen from an Amp Supply 160-10 dual 3-500z amp with Peter Dahl aftermkt xfrnmer too for $650 and 112 shipping. I onbly have 3 amps…and….

        • Three?

          Slacker…

          I have three Loudenboomers.*

*I DO need a PS for the Radio Industries amp, but its still pretty far down on the priorities list.

BTW, did you know Lee Bergren, W0AR (SK) designed the Loudenboomer so it could be tweaked as a band-specific amp? He ran one each on 80, 60, 40, 20, and 10CW, and one on SSB-voice, out of his shack.

I’m guessing electricity was cheap in Kansas, in the early 1960s…

        • and to think I have survived for years on a measly 100 PeP watts of power … I must be the unacknowledged bastard step-child of the group.
