I have mentioned a few times this week that I have a new Potensic Atom SE drone and that, having the FAA UAV ticket (easy transition from ASEL pilot) I really wanted to “keep a hand in.”
Boy, did I ever!
This adventure begins with the first attempted flight of the drone. Damn thing would not calibrate its sensors (horizontal and vertical). Being an and old pilot – and not personally at too much risk over my own land, I decided not to wait for help from Potensic support – because it was national holidays earlier this week. So, I flew anyway.
Other than the center of the screen being blocked with the compass calibration reminder, it was fun. Took it up to about 60 feet and turned the camera straight down. And there, I was. “Outstanding in my field” so to speak!
Still unable to get anything in the way of first person visual (FPV) experience, I went up to about 80 feet to have a look around the countryside of East Texas on a rainy Thursday very early. About 7:30am.
This is looking into our west stand of (mostly pine) trees. In about the middle of the frame you can make out the white plastic shooting table and see our shooting lane that goes about 120 yards off down the hill to the left.
This was going so well; I took a turn up toward the remnants of our 15-year old greenhouse.
Still, I could not judge distance worth a damn because the whole center of the screen was covered with the “calibration” error message. So… I didn’t notice how close I was getting to these tree limbs…
Next thing you know (Oh shit!) there was a horrible noise from somewhere 20-feet up the tree as the display was tumbling all over the place. It bounced around a bit and finally came to rest like this…
I still had no particular idea what was really happening, so I stopped for a minute or two and went through the mental checklist:
“Can you see well? No, error message blocks view.”
“Well, you have the camera running, so try moving it around and see what you can see from up there…”
Mean like this?
Hmm…this was a fine kettle of fish! There is a couple of hundred bucks worth of drone, upside down in a tree at 20-30 feet up (didn’t measure). And with no able son with his ascenders and tree climbing gear… My mood soured as I walked down to the shop to see what was in the inventory that could be used to extricate the drone from the tree, right?
There was the answer! Remember those mini chainsaws I recommended a while back? These guys?
Well both batteries were charged, and they seemed ready for action.
I know what you’re thinking. “Wait! You’re going to cut down a 50-foot-tall tree with those little iddy-biddy battery chainsaws?”
Yessir. Too much work to fire up one of the gas chainsaws and it was raining again by now (well, sure, of course…) so running power up to the site or bringing the generator up to run an electric chainsaw just seems too involved from my standpoint. Which was wanting to fly, not wanting to be standing in the rain, so cutting down the tree would really be the only suitable option.
Ah…but then the OSHA Inspector (wife Elaine) showed up. Oh-oh. I was about to get “red-flagged” on this job.
I explained that the drone was emitting “come find me” beeps (really useful feature!) and I was pretty sure which tree was at fault. We would need to hurry.
As luck would have it, this is a tree I have been planning for half a dozen years to whack, anyway. It kills the afternoon winter sun into the greenhouse. With it finally gone, this was turning into a fortunate two-fer.
“Tell me you’re not going to cut down a 16-inch tree with those little chainsaws, are you? You know it’s going to fall on the greenhouse, right? “
I left her to vent for a few minutes. “Be right back, honey – one tool I forgot.”
Within 5-minutes, I was back with the Kubota tractor happy to do engaged in real “tree farm” work again. She was still sputtering objections when I laid out the plan.
“You stand down the hill, well clear of me and the trees. Watch the live feed closely on the camera. I’m going to smash the tractor into one tree, then the other….”
Which we did, and, sure enough, we picked the beeps out of the right tree.
“How much is a new greenhouse going to cost when you lay that tree down smack in the middle of the roof?”
“That greenhouse hasn’t been worth shit since the roof buckled under the weight of Snowmageddon a couple of years back. Besides, I used to instruct Paul Bunyon on logging shit before he went pro.,.”
“You’re going to kill yourself one of these days…”
“Not today, dear. I’m going to get a ladder.”
With no G2 to give me the “standard lecture” about how men in their mid-70s should not be climbing (muddy) ladders (in the rain) to cut off the one major branch (one-handed, left hand cut at that) that could foul my plans, I proceeded with some caution.
“At least let me hold the ladder for you…”
(Ah. That’s the real Elaine coming back…)
“The plan is this: I’m going to make a stop cut first, then cut some small wedges. When it looks close, I will smack it with the tractor bucket a few times until it begins to break and then use the bucket from the side to drop it right between (gesturing confidently) the Greenhouse and the garden power pole.”
“No way.”
Which I perfectly executed, and the tree dropped (dead-to-nuts) where I told her it would drop:
The drone, as expected, was in the tree and actually landed right-side up with no damage at all. It was perfectly played!
Which means I will have spent a lot of time this weekend cutting up the tree into tractor ride sized pieces because while it didn’t seem so big from a long ways away, on the ground it became obvious there might be some real work involved cleaning this up:
Even here, though, it all works out in the end, living a charmed life, as I do. Because, I had just been wondering where I’d get some properly sized wood for the new wood emergency cooking stove that now lives on the outdoor stand we assembled on the BBQ deck.
What I have for my library? The snagging of a drone just as it flies into these leaves…
You can see the corner of the fence line, right.
Now, in future episodes of ShopTalk Sunday, we can take exciting and interesting pictures with the drone. Once Potensic figures out why the damn thing is not calibrating which blocks me from seeing obstacles.
Since the tree-attack, though, and a change of phones to something more visible, it seems to work OK…
My suspicion? A 400 nit 7-inch phone is not bright enough. For outside flight we’d suggest at least 800+ nits and turn off any “adaptive brightness” which does nothing but piss off (and blind) the pilot. If your phone isn’t clearly visible in full sunlight, at 400 nits. flying from the share may be your only option around obstacles.
We’ll pick this up in a future ShopTalk Sunday report because the REAL purpose of the drone is hanging the BSHP (big secret ham radio project) at least 60-feet up in the sky. Yes, that’s right – we are going tree-fishing next!
In the meantime, the Potensic people had last week off (national holiday in Taiwan and China). They will need to be well rested to deal with me.
Write when you get rich.
Baron Bunyon von George@ure.net
A couple of years back, the state wildlife guys used a similar drone rig to survey for feral hog infestation on a nearby property. After determining that there was a 500+head herd, the regulators hauled @ss. Not sure how Ure aerial surveillance for trespassers will result in a different outcome.
Deer jump 5′ hog wire, hogs burrow under. Trespassers with guns cut fences and shoot back. Choices are direct confrontation with overwhelming superiority, or haul @ss.
“n” for Mr. Negative.
Get a foghorn, George, or a bull horn, it’ll be FUN!!!
Never said that G____ shouldn’t have a drone for entertainment. They are also a good excuse to climb ladders, and shoot retrieval cords from various devices.
Not sure how to operate or retrieve a drone with a foghorn or bullhorn. You’d have to provide a narrative and diagrams for that one.
You haven’t seen the glock 19 w/ 50 round drum attachment yet have you….or the little IED w/ magnetic release.
Nice job laying that tree down. Very precise. Diana told me once the reason she gets testy with me over my activities is she fears losing me. OK, I get it. Just before I sent all but my 8′ step ladder away, much the same as Elaine, she came out of the house when I was going to install a bracket 16′ up on the side of the house the secure the new telescoping mast I got since I am not allowed to climb the old tower to make repairs.
“I’ll hold the ladder.”
Sure there isn’t something else you want to hold.
“Gross. Just put that thingy on and quit messing around.”
That’s what you always say.
“Icy, death ray stare”
Quick trip up the ladder and realized I forgot the driver and screws. Sorry, I forgot something.
“Icy death ray stare with crossed arms.”
Back up the ladder after a quick equipment check. 4 screws and done. OK, On Repel!
“What?”
Coming down. About 4 rungs from the bottom she grabs both my legs just above the ankles. Damn near fell off the ladder.
“Sorry I thought you were going to fall.”
On the ground I said thanks Dear. It’s been a while since you grabbed my legs like that. Wink Wink.
“Is that all you ever think about? Gross! And it’s not going to happen again either.”
Be still my heart.
Stay safe 73
I had to grin at your ladder escapade. When I went up the ladder to our 24′ water tower, my wife was on watch to call someone to scrape me up if I fell. She didn’t hold the ladder. Didn’t want to be under me if I fell.
Growing old takes a lot of the fun out of life.
Sorry to hear that!
If it’s not going to happen again, what’s the point of having a wife?
Married 40 years last month. I was 34 and she was 22. No complaints here. She only gets that way when I don’t do what she says. Like a good long term investment, it’s worth it.
I believe you! My best wishes for lots more beautiful years together. Not all of us get to have such an experience, and not all can keep it together. Just keep on living the dream! It’s worth far more than climbing the random ladder.
seriously …IT’S HER JOB… to make sure their men don’t do stupid stuff…
I know someone that watches with amusement when I get into sticky situations just to see if I’ll survive.
I never had someone that actually cared in the way that you speak of, other than my daughter.
Now that’s well told, and funny! Thanks for starting my Sunday off with a chuckle!
George:
this sounds like one of my many harmless-not-adventures, unfortunately, I lost my life mate and ladder holder 18 months ago to an undetected heart condition, here one day and gone the next, and she had not been vaxxed.
Anyhow, which of those mini-saws did you recommend and where can I get a pair-one is none, etc.?
Thanks, Gray Fox
Sorry for your loss, GF – I dread the day…
But just look up mini chainsaws on Amazon and then sort by reviews
Then find a saw with 300+ and buy the best ranking with at least 330 reviews.
It’s kinda like voting, but less crookecd!
G, That’s a great tip to know, never would have thought a mini chainsaw would go thru 16″!
Congrats on the ‘tree falling marksmanship’! Bet ya had previous practice!
practice makes perfect this was a pleasure watching and reminiscentof my father cutting down trees.. my parents heated with wood and dad would take down three to five trees a week or more..
he was a firm believer in proper Woodlore management ..so for every tree he harvested he planted one..
it was always fun to watch him drop a tree..
this video I watch whenever I get nostalgia.. I seen my father do this quite often it’s a hoot and it was always fun watching the expressions of those he cut trees out if their shelter belts..
he was a tool shut to..made his own chains and had all the wood cutting tools..I am like him except I have kitchen gadgets instead of wood chopping tools..

After reading George’s original recommendation, I spent time researching and bought the “BEI & HONG Mini Chainsaw 6-Inch with 2 Battery, Upgraded Lubricate chain Oil System.” I like the oiler and spare batteries. Has worked great, surprisingly fast, but have not taken down large trees yet. Right now only $60 with discount.

75 in two months, and still climbing ladders.
RinC: I’m now 80 and haven’t climbed a ladder since I was your age. But “the kids” are coming in for Christmas and I want to wrap the palms in Christmas lights. Wife forbids climbing ladders and I realize that both upper body strength and my sense of balance have deteriorated. Too cheap to hire someone. Hmmmm. I sense a MacGyver episode coming on.
@Richard
“BEI & HONG Mini Chainsaw 6-Inch with 2 Battery, Upgraded Lubricate chain Oil System.”
Me likee!
This is the one I have, only with a built-in oiler. I’d guess that is a major improvement, because taking time out to periodically put a drop of oil on the chain is a PITA.
@MarcR:
Do you have a drone?

My condolences. My kids’ mom had a similar fate, from A-fib. She was alone and I doubt anything could have been done. One reason that I seem so cavalier regarding life is that we simply will stay until we go. In many cases, there’s no useful intervention possible. All we can do is the best we can while we enjoy the ride.
Regarding saws – I’ve had great luck with the little 10″ Harbor Freight unit. It’s by Bauer and uses their batteries, so it’s best if you already have the batteries from other tools. I’ve had it well over a year and used it often. I still use the original chain after a few sharpenings. If you have a local HF store, you can buy one when on sale and if you don’t like it, you can return it within 90 days without hassle. Beware, it has no top safety bar like George’s one, but it can cut full depth with either edge through most trees. A few improvements that could be made would be steel bucking teeth and some way to prevent clogging the chain oiler.
https://www.harborfreight.com/lawn-garden/outdoor-power-tools/chainsaws-chippers/20v-cordless-10-in-chainsaw-tool-only-64940.html
I have no affiliation with the company beyond being a tool slut. The only tool I strongly advise against is the Bauer weed-whacker. It has power, but breaks strings constantly and is a hassle to load. There’s no way to install alternative heads either, and IMHO, the balance is off.
my sincere condolences..
I fear the date that happens to us.. my boss is one of the finest women I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing..after several strokes I know the possibility is there..
She will always be in your heart.
Sorry about your loss, man.
When comparing, there seemed to be a half-dozen different saws that rocked. I chose the Bei & Hong from Amazon because I already had a charger that’d charge the batteries.

I got a chuckle out of this news post.. It had memories about a younger LOOB out at Walley world.. LOL LOL people lined up for hundreds of feet to get on the scariest roller coaster ever… LOL LOL LOL
Now I am not a fan of the roller coasters and other things .. but give me the plume or the lazy river and there is one where you ride and inner tube down a shoot.. and I am all over that one.. LOL LOL LOL.. so while the rest of the family was on those other rides.. I went to the lazy river.. yup.. they even have a bar on that ride.. had me a cold adult beverage.. and was doing the tour … when that big scary roller coaster jumped the tracks and the brakes locked up and the car was hanging upside down.. there was a worker next to my exciting ride.. he grimmaced and said Dam I hate that ride.. Why.. oh it gets going so fast that it jumps the tracks and the brakes stop the cars.. then I have to climb my fat ass up there and release the brakes by hand LOL LOL LOL so it can continue the ride..
during the day there.. that thing froze almost once an hour … I wonder what was going through the maintenance man as he had to work to get the ride to release the brakes.. was it similar to the thoughts of the other guy having to climb up there on the ladder .. Needless to say.. the lazy river ride is totally awesome..
“Ah…but then the OSHA Inspector (wife Elaine) showed up. Oh-oh. I was about to get “red-flagged” on this job.”
OTFLMAO… that happens to me all the time LOL LOL LOL one reason I am not showing the younger grandkids how to do things.. I don’t want the inspector to be freaking out …
My kids are all stuck down in your area of the outback ..hopefully being able to get out and come back to the wastelands today.. they of course don’t see what I do in the news and technically consider my thoughts on it all as absurd never going to happen…. and went out of the country for a week.. because of the israel the plane out of the country they were in was held up.. and they missed their flight home..
“Now, in future episodes of ShopTalk Sunday, we can take exciting and interesting pictures with the drone. Once Potensic figures out why the damn thing is not calibrating which blocks me from seeing obstacles.”
I had a drone given to me several years ago.. and I gave it to my grandson to play with.. he could make that dam thing do crazy stuff like loopty loops … Now that was years ago.. We built a dirigible once with remote control and then filled it with Helium.. that was a fun thing.. the ornithopter didn’t last long .. we built it then took it out.. wound it up.. Yup rubber band driven.. It flew so wonderful.. about six hundred feet then turned around and flew back and landed on top of a building next to us.. I had to get out the ladder and climb up there to get it.. so no more bird … gave it to the girls that took it to a park.. where it did the same thing and landed in a tree.. it was gone.. the boss freaks out every time I start up a ladder.. your going to kill yourself.. the problem is I only have one eye.. and other issues.. she is afraid I will fall off of it..
Just don’t poke your eye out! Safety glasses are probably a good idea.
I’ve never had a problem using just one eye – either one. When driving at night with oncoming headlights, I shut my left eye until the car passes and then flip to the opposite eye that hasn’t had its receptors bleached by the light. Same thing if someone’s blinding me through my left rearview mirror. I use one eye at a time more than both eyes together. When you climb a ladder, it’s about situational awareness and balance. Balance is vestibular and it doesn’t need vision at all. Of course, loud noises can affect balance – especially unexpected ones. I wouldn’t expect your “boss” to want to understand that, but at least you do. Still, it’s likely you’ll want to use vision to assist with whatever you climbed the ladder for in the first place. If at night, wear a headlamp.

The word “Flood” is disturbing. When water flows out over its banks and no longer contained … could become a real problem.

Sadly, I see no effort at all on the part of our nation to prevent war and de-escalate. That’s universal – there’s no war in the world that I’m aware of that we try to de-escalate. We seem to pick a side and support it, regardless of whether or not we have any business doing so. If it seems like we’re losing, we double down. If it seems like things are holding their own or getting a bit better, we leave, as in Afghanistan.
Seems this administration instigates, antagonizes wars and sides/sends money to the wrong people. Evil – Babylonian.

Reread: “snagging of a drone” and “tree-attack”
C’mon man! You and your whirlee-gig attacked the tree!
Read to Elaine: she was right (always a good way to start) to show caution and temper (pun intended) your inclination (clearly wayward) irt: fetching your aerial eyeballs. I have stuck plenty of things in trees, including way up alt., and they always blow down. Only long later would I cut a tree to retrieve the whatever.
ATL: we (me, Padawan and Pro-cutter) have taken down all the trees which could hit the house or immediate yard. The pole barn is another story (offending Mulberry) but that’s soon to be remedied (by: me, Padawan and a bit ‘o stout rope). Wonder how Mulberry burns?
[…] the Crest of the Tidal Wave (nod to: Robert Prechter) temp wise was last weekend through Wednesday. Now? Chill. Darned Chill (the Germans would say “it’s fresh” today. Found gloves but … where is the stack of stocking caps? Tick tock.
Though I’m not quite done working on / playing with water toys, the annual Pier Jerk is two weeks from today. Sigh.
Last: thinking you get a referral spiff, maybe link to AMZN the battery chain saw George. I have (4) gas saws and one electric but would use the mini for brush. Or, my Padawan learner might?
Write when you get warm,

ps – ya get nine. That’s what I reminded my soon to be 19 YO TomCat. Yesterday was the ninth time I closed ground with said feline as a full mature Bald Eagle rolled into a dive. Arms flailing I made it to His Lordship in time, raptor flared and went vertical about 20’ above my cat. Ya only get nine …
“to show caution and temper”
I got thinking about that… seriously…I cannot remember when tempers flared in our home..
she tolerates my crazy old man projects … OOPS … are OOPS and oops happens to everyone..house rule… never get upset over an oops…… a thing is a thing and can be replaced. no food is sacred for me only. unless your eating it then don’t touch while I’m eating..otherwise if your hungry or thirsty and it looks good dive right in..
hack em up movies are not to be played.. child can view what we watch..
“Wonder how Mulberry burns?”
Pretty well, I’d imagine. It is an interesting hardwood.
The twiggish branches are as soft as alder with a spongy cellulose core. The longer it grows, the harder the wood gets. Like other fruits it is semi-closed grain with few knots. I don’t believe it grows to be any harder than apple. The trees tend to hollow out in spots, with age, which makes the big ones a deadfall danger.
As far as the wood itself, it was used for furniture and has good structure and longevity. AFAIK it hasn’t been so-used for the past 100 years or so, being relegated to cutting boards, and live edge (or full bark-on) slab clocks and wall plaques. Dried and planked, it is an exceedingly rare and expensive wood (probably because everybody just burns it, so there isn’t any), selling in the neighborhood of $30-$40 per board/foot, or about 4-5x the price of other domestic hardwoods. (I just looked this up — had no idea…)
If’fn it ain’t et up, you might think about planking the solid parts of it…
“Found gloves but … where is the stack of stocking caps?”
I found mine yesterday and took them all to a laundromat, along with my jackets and light coats. (The heavy stuff is clean, organized, and packed down. It never gets cold enough. The last time it came out was for the Notre Dame / Northwestern game 10 years ago (or so). Our seats were in the top row of Notre Dame Stadium. It was -17° at kickoff and I sweated balls in those clothes until I got to my seat. I had to walk amongst the tailgaters with my coat unzipped. My cold weather gear rocks…

“Though I’m not quite done working on / playing with water toys, the annual Pier Jerk is two weeks from today. Sigh.”
I’ve seen a lot of places, even in Michigan (Lake Cadillac, for one), where they don’t pull docks or boats, but simply winch them out of the water for the winter. I don’t understand how Mother Nature lets them get away with it. Dad and I ALWAYS did the pier jerk…
I also ordered me a gadget.. for my test of hot water bath canning.. a temperature data logger.. even though I know that the vast majority of the world pressure canners are not available except only to the fabulously wealthy.. the thought comes up.. will the temperature get high enough in a hot water bath canner to kill botulism?
there is this one..
https://www.amazon.com/Lascar-EL-USB-1-PRO-Temperature-Logger-Extended/dp/B005BG3N4S/ref=sr_1_9?
and this one that I am curious about..
https://www.weberscientific.com/hitemp-135c-extended-range-temperature-data-logger-thermco?
that way there isn’t any confusion on if it is safe or not.. if the temperature doesn’t get past the kill zone of botulism then I will toss them in the pressure canner to get it there..
I know the boss will wonder why I am trying this.. well for years and years .. man has canned meat and other perishables in hot water bath.. dehydration etc.. the Amish still can meat with hot water bath for three hours.. but can the temperature get above the kill zone.. with steam it does.. and it has been something of a curiosity for me at least.. can it be done.. like the pickles.. I always made pickles only to have the pickles mushy.. then one day I was watching how it is made.. and there they were making pickles and it was so simple and easy.. that I have adopted it..
cut both ends or at least the flower end off of the cucumber.. or green beans.. sterilize the jars.. and lids.. put your alum ( 1/4tsp..) or a grape leaf on the bottom the salt half tsp.. then a dill sprig.. onions and garlic put the cucumbers in then fill with boiling brine mix.. grape leaf and a dill sprig on top.. put the lid on then hit it with the vacuum sealer..
I have a couple of different ones..
this one is totally awesome..
https://www.amazon.com/Electric-Mason-Vacuum-Sealer-Regular/dp/B0BDDX27WT/ref=sr_1_4?
then put them up.. great seal and crunchy pickles.. if you like spicy pickles then get a mrs. wages salsa mix and in each jar put a half tsp of the mix in it.. this year I didn’t get hardly any cucumbers.. very few tomatoes to..

Ouch! That’s just painful to look at! Then again, stupidity SHOULD be painful!
OBD: LOL! First things first. Yes, must put out the cigarette.
Started picking up long wearing relatively low-cost items for everyday use. Picked up a couple of Zippo lighters and a
supply of wicks and flints. Got lighter fluid, but maybe I’ll locally source a bit more. Been lusting for a mid-range Spartan 5.5″ 1095 knife. That’s the size I reach for most frequently. Bought a new SST frying pan and lid which is lightweight, but can cook over anything except maybe an induction stove.
The objective is to pick up everyday use items I don’t have in stock which are light and durable and which will be of use in all scenarios. Still thinking about it. I need to jot down a list of manual tools I’m missing or are in gaps in sets. I need a couple of boxes of PTL nails and screws for damage repair. It’s usually the simple stuff that leaves you scratching your head when you need it and you have nada.
Many years ago I got into flying RC planes. I ended up putting one of my planes way up in a cottonwood tree. I put a good size weight on the end of my fishing line and after several attempts I finally snagged and got it down. It had a little damage but not too bad that it couldn’t be fixed and flown again. From that point on I made sure to stay away from the trees!
Here’s a very short video of one of my near misses while testing skis on my camera plane. Living where I do, it’s impossible to stay away from trees.

Great job of piloting!!!!
Temu, the occasional filler ad on urbansurvival, had a 4 or 6 inch , battery saw for 26 Washingtons, free delivery, a few months ago. Works great except on oily cedar. No oiler, small kerf, one hand operation. Keep the other hand in ure pocket because it likes to bite.
I remember people trying to tell G.W. to refrain and just rebuild after 911. He didn’t listen and well, that’s history.
Now this …

It’s only gonna get worse from here.
Meanwhile … Russia is bombing the hell out of an area in Ukraine.
PB: Finally ordering the geiger counter, plastic sheeting and duct tape today. Hope I’m wasting my money!

surprise attack in Israel, yah sure thing
just like Pearl Harbor,,, FDR knew, but let it happen, he wanted WAR,
he let our sailors die, so the deep state could get another profitable WAR,
endless war is more profitable than Winning
is this any different or same ole playbook
hook line and sinker , by the stinkers, selling to both sides, at the tax slaves expense.
Who is the real enemy? the slave masters
Revelations? is it the End or a New Beginning
– bibi has already tipped us off..
See Albert Pike and fomenting WW3..the goal here is to an all out slaughter of both sides. “Illuminists” and their agents are currently seeing to this already. israhell will completely lay waste to gaza, their actions/overreaction will offend muzzy neighbors to the point of reaction-intervention.
..Mutually Assured Destruction of BOTH sides is the GOAL hear.
I saw a solid green baseball cap. Emblazoned on it was:
