Retail with a Side of Econ, WW III Weekend, Summer Problemology

Let me huff the whiteboard marker for a sec.  (ah…all better!)

Let’s begin – before “rolling retail” with a short economics discourse for the tuition-impaired who had to really work, instead.

First bullet point: In economics, the phrase “shopkeeper economy” most precisely refers to a theoretical model developed by Daniel P. Murphy (2013). It describes an economy made up of many small providers (shopkeepers) who offer differentiated services.

“This paper investigates the properties of an economy populated by shopkeepers who monopolistically provide differentiated services at zero marginal cost but positive fixed costs. In this setting, equilibrium output and wealth depend on consumer demand rather than available supply. The “shopkeeper economy” is compared to a standard production-based
economy in which wealth is a function only of labor supply and technology. I demonstrate that the existence of producers who face only fixed costs provides a counterexample to the notion that “supply creates its own demand.”

Here’s why we have picked Murphy as a framer for Retail figs this morning: (write this down on the fridge)…

In a conventional production economy, wealth is largely a function of labor supply and technology (supply-side determined). In a shopkeeper economy, the binding constraint is demand.  Homework: post a comment on what you see as the current ratio (supply side to demand side). Extra credit for scaffolding to support the predictive potential of this. Nobel nominations for citing the integral resolving from >50 years of Riemann estimation points to solve.

This framework is useful for thinking about service-heavy or retail-heavy economies, local service sectors, and situations in which capacity exists but utilization depends on spending.

“Advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for July 2026, adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, were $763.6 billion, down 0.6 percent (±0.4 percent) from the previous month, but up 5.0 percent (±0.5 percent) from July 2025. Total sales for the May 2026 through July 2026 period were up 6.3 percent (±0.5 percent) from the same period a year ago. The May 2026 to June 2026 percent change was unrevised from up 0.2 percent (±0.3 percent)*.

OK, retail down – so the market goes down?  Don’t bet on it – yet.  Remember this moves the odds of a Fed rate hike down toward zero, so no telling how markets will read it. (Remember, they are crazy…)

Earlier, the market was about even.  We’ve been looking for the market to launch its final “summiting run” at the [ghost] trend channel higher.

*This assumes you have followed our occasional use of “ghost channels” when conventional point-and-line charts are hopelessly contradictory.

Still on the dance card today? Consumer sentiment, Oil Rig count, and a trip to the liquor store.  It’s how summers roll here in the hubs of hell.

We are leaving the flash goggle on the dresser this weekend.  Although false flag risk rises after September 1. (As an excuse for WW III going kinetic…wait for it.)  For now twiddle and ponder:

1. Hormuz is no longer merely “closed” or “open”; it has become a sustained military-economic contest with shipping trying to operate inside it. Commodity transits recovered from five Wednesday to nine Thursday but remain below August’s daily average of 12, while the U.S. says it can maintain its blockade indefinitely and the UAE says two ADNOC vessels were attacked Thursday; Brent was back near $88.50 early Friday.  (Think retail figures will help oil fears?)
The significant overnight change is partial traffic recovery without any corresponding reduction in strategic risk.

Modeling inference: 87 percent chance The Strait of Hormuz may be settling into “degraded operation” rather than binary closure.  (Think Gazafication without the waterfront resort option.)

Don’t rule out a “Sunday agreement” to light-off market summiting before Labor Day.

2. Congo’s Ebola outbreak has crossed a more dangerous geographic threshold. A motorcycle-taxi driver carried Ebola into previously unaffected Bas-Uele province, visited several health facilities before dying, and generated multiple possible exposure chains; the national outbreak has now reached 4,566 confirmed cases and 2,128 deaths.
That changes our BlinkLabNews read from simply “case counts rising” to (oh shit!) containment geography widening.

3. Colombia’s earthquake has moved decisively from survivor rescue toward recovery and reconstruction. Government figures Thursday night show at least 281 dead, more than 3,900 injured, 379 missing and more than 10,500 homes destroyed. 150 aftershocks, too.

4. The U.S. domestic disaster focus has shifted from firestorms to Midwest/Ohio Valley flood cycling. NWS says the active pattern will continue producing heavy-to-excessive rain and flash-flood threats over the next couple of days, while eastern Missouri received 6–12 inches overnight with extensive and catastrophic flash flooding; dangerous heat remains entrenched across the central/southern Plains and Southeast.

Volcanism in Italy has been rising in predictive/prophecy sites around the web.  Keep an eye on this because predictive sources have been clustering.

5. North Korea denounced next week’s U.S.-South Korea military exercises and promised a stronger nuclear deterrent after its latest missile activity. You were expecting a love note?

6. China dismissed Taiwan’s ongoing 10-day Han Kuang military exercises as war-provoking theater, while Taiwan continues practicing blockade, communications and civil-defense contingencies. Also a “love notes” flurry.

Speaking of Taiwan! Taiwan’s parliament has approved holding three referendums, including one that could ask voters whether caning should be used for people convicted of sex crimes and fraud; another concerns nuclear power. That’s not satire—it is part of Taiwan’s current/actual referendum agenda.

7. Repeated drone incursions along NATO’s Baltic and Finnish frontiers are generating concern over whether Russian-linked activity is probing alliance defenses and response procedures. Pressure increasing. EU not quite “Finnished.”

8. French authorities disclosed that taxpayer data were stolen in a cyberattack against Finance Ministry systems. Post-It to the “government trust” folder.

9. A hacking group claims it stole large volumes of data from nearly 50 organizations including Shell, Philips, GE and Fiserv by exploiting vulnerabilities across multiple targets simultaneously. Post-It to the corporate trust folder.

10. Apple has trained its own AI model specifically for China in partnership with Alibaba, departing from its earlier strategy of relying primarily on third-party models there. But, can it order take out?

11. Inflation-adjusted bond yields have climbed to their highest levels in more than a decade across major economies as both governments and AI companies increase borrowing. Capital pressure rising.

Related: The yen has surrendered roughly half of the gain created by the recent U.S.-Japan intervention, reviving speculation about another intervention or faster Bank of Japan tightening. Currency pressure returning. Nikkei closed at 68,715 overnight.

Modeled at 92%: Ebola’s important number is no longer only the national case count—it is the geographic dispersion rate.  (As we have been saying, “One airplane ride away from global pandemic…”)

Modeling at 78% chance:  Food inflation deserves renewed attention even while U.S. CPI temporarily cools. Out around the edges of the mainstream you can find details ‘We failed you today’: Namecheap down for several hours after a data center cooling failure, leaving customers furious | TechRadar.

When you get to be an old hand at data, this is far from “shocking.”  It’s the kind of thing I was writing about in my 2012 book (“Broken Web“).  And what most people don’t realize is how “odds stack up over time.”

Seems like every August, or so, I run into a “digital crisis.” Years back it was a StemOne issue with the old Eastern Airlines reservation system (early 1980s) and since then it has been server rack-level fails, backup fails, rewrite 6 months’ worth of work fails, and so on.

This time, I wised-up.  Our provider/vendor list includes NameCheap along with Hosting.com.  Both of which had centers involved.  But we just practiced the real preparedness angle this time:  Kick back, relax, and let the pros fix it. Which they did.

One thing I have learned from past “Summer Problemology” is that if you are too hyper – which I have been a few times – you can screw things up worse than doing nothing.

So that’s the take out for today.  Before rolling up your sleeves and applying the “golden screwdriver” to any problem? Sit back for at least five minutes and chill.  Many problems will solve themselves in that short period of time.

So next time there’s an internet “outage” give it a while. Reboot compute, routers, mesh – all of it.  It’s hard to do, but sometimes “the most is done by doing the least.”

I didn’t have to “do” a damn thing.  Just apply time and that rarest of all modern management skills.

Patience.

Meanwhile the CPC/NOAA read-ahead is showing additional “monsoonery” (my lingo, not approved govt-ese) for two more weeks.

  4. I guess I am framing this as a future column request.

    While to the casual observer it looks as though Europe legally “de jure” is still a free and open market it seems that in the EU the “free and open market” has been “de facto” limited for small and medium sized businesses that attempt to sell goods across borders. Essentially European regulation has made the box that a product comes in a secondary product that the vendor is responsible for. This is a regulatory burden designed to force recycling of packaging.

    The regulations are Byzantine and hard to understand. Regulations seem to mean that all vendors have to be registered with a national agent to handle packaging. Full registration compliance with all 27 countries is estimated by some news outlets at approximately $16000.00. If that number is true no small businesses can sustain that.

    Has the EU regulation limited access to the common market for small and medium manufacturers and artisanal enterprises through imposing a cost of compliance overburden that is impossible for small and medium businesses to cope with?

    • One of the things Peoplenomics ought to do at the fringe is operate as a kind of Researcher for Hire service: readers bring us questions that don’t fit neatly into the daily news cycle, and we put serious research and systems thinking on them. Then we ask the larger question: What does this tell us about where the world is going?

      This week’s reader question about EU packaging regulation turned out to be exactly that kind of problem. What sounded like an obscure complaint about cardboard boxes opened into something much larger: whether Europe’s supposedly common market has quietly become economically inaccessible to small manufacturers and artisanal sellers because of country-by-country compliance costs. The reader had found a real issue, not an internet misunderstanding. The strongest supporting fact is almost comic: the European Commission itself acknowledges that fragmented Extended Producer Responsibility rules have become a frequently reported Single Market barrier and a serious hurdle for smaller firms.

      And that fits squarely into the framework of my Downsizing work. Large systems eventually accumulate so much administrative overhead that the machinery intended to coordinate the system begins consuming the system itself. Europe still talks the language of a free and open common market, but when a small producer can legally sell across a border yet cannot economically afford the paperwork required to do so, the border hasn’t disappeared. It has migrated into regulation.

      That’s worth watching because bureaucratic overload rarely announces itself as collapse. It first appears as friction: fewer small exporters, more consolidation, less entrepreneurship, rising compliance costs, widening resentment between center and periphery. Eventually the organization discovers that everything is still technically functioning — except fewer and fewer people can afford to participate.

      The EU talks a strong game.

  6. make your own liquid smoke using a simple tote style cold smoker and a drink smoker.

    I burn clean hardwood (like apple, cherry, or hickory) in the drink smoker and pipe the cool smoke into my tote. Inside the tote, I place a chilled monster drink can with a screw top filled with bell water balls and heavy brine solution — the super cold metal from the can in the freezer causes the smoke to condense into droplets and roll down into the bowl bits sitting in…

    Those droplets are the liquid smoke… you can dilute it flavor it to your liking

    just let the smoke run for a while, then collect the condensation and filter it through a coffee filter to remove soot. The result is clean, food safe liquid smoke you can use in sauces, meats, or marinades.

    No pressure, no chemicals — just smoke + cold metal + patience.
    all on your countertop..
    now to make a barbeque sauce…
    simple easy and changeable to your liking…
    1 cup ketchup or( tomato paste and sauce)
    1/2 cup brown sugar
    1/4 cup apple cider vinegar ( this is what keeps it shelf stable)
    2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
    1 tbsp molasses (optional but amazing)
    1 tsp smoked paprika
    1 tsp garlic powder
    1/2 tsp onion powder
    1/2 tsp black pepper
    1/4–1/2 tsp chili powder or cayenne (optional heat) or red pepper..
    1/2 tsp salt
    put this in a pan and heat it up..( corn syrup is another addition to sweeten it up)
    A few drops of your liquid smoke…..

      • Yes if you use the out door smoker out an angel food pan on the stack then a steel bowl over the top with a spacer holing it slightly over the top of the smoke stack..another bowl steel above that filled with ice and rock salt driving the temperature down..
        I was putting how to make it in my tote cold smoker…..by using super chilled drink can and a small bowl as the condenser / collector
        for Xmas this year I made for the kitchen gadget a cold smoker using a simple tote and using a cocktail smoker for the burn smoke chamber..along with koji that way the smoker can also speed age your steak or roast giving you a meal fit for a king..coffee and two tbsp. of koji per pound as the marinade along with whatever you like onion powder and garlic etc…..I had to get creative since everyone can only use so many spatula’s .. each year I give a kitchen gadget..like our ancient civilizations..daily events and historical events have always been passed down while sitting around the hearth today people grab a plate and sit in front of the boob tube..so if I can get them to sit at a table..then there’s a light..I gave a lantern and the kids made brown berries from glass jelly jars that are cups..A home item that can either be a cup an oil light in times of darkness..as the be a light for others either spit happy or personally…..same wah with valentines flowers for the mrs. I take regular every day items then have them made into flower displays.. my favorite one was a toilet brush scone…lol lol..turned it into a small waterfall with two love doves in the center..or the crystal ball…
        my favorite florist was showing me how to imbued a rose in a crystal ball just the other day for this years fower..last year I gave a forever rise like in the movie the beauty and the beast…it was a literal learning curve on hiw to preserve a flower..lol lol..got it done..I was going to use a quart mason jar that way if the rose ever falls apart she would have the jar..but settled on a watch display…

        1. Prep the Meat
        Choose: ribeye, strip, sirloin, chuck roast, pork loin, or pork shoulder.
        Pat dry thoroughly…
        2. Make the Koji marinade
        Use Mini ( I gave enough mojo to do there’s roasts or two meals of steaks)
        1 cup koji
        coffee to cover
        ? cup salt
        spices like powdered onion garlic etc..
        mix well..
        Optional: let it sit 8–12 hours to activate enzymes.
        This is your koji shio, the magic sauce…

        grill to get your meat done..the coffee helps with the protein break down and will give you that perfect sear..

          I watch Hallmark channel..everyone lives in a mansion in neighborhoods where real life issues simply don’t exist…driving cars that only someone above real can adpfford..even the single mothers…lol lol lol lol..
          not one of them do what I see ofyen..when the wife and I go out to eat ( A rare occasion) I make sure I have in the bank to give the waitress a healthy tip..and I scope the customers.. for a young couple either with kids or dressed casually..the young kids they order their meal first then the wife..( life becomes routine..those with kids the wife feels trapped.. stuck ..the wife orders next..then the move you look for..the guy will either glance up or pull out his wa!let and scope the car inside..the look up is him making a mental calculation of what he has… the he will order either the cheapest thing on the menu..like fried French fries pickled eggs etc..) for those I have our waitress add their ticket onto ours along with a tip for their waitress…
          ( I have been in that position myself..)
          I think the only show that came close to real life and even that didn’t deal with the issues..was Roseanne and married with children that took it to a hilarious out of ordinary life situations..
          nothing real life..probably because those writing the scripts live in the no real life neighborhoods..

        we met a guy that did that..went to retire only to discover over ten years of deployment was outsourced to the CIA which wasn’t part of his military ..another government office..our senators best man ever..worked at getting it added to his record for after five years..he lost his home..tried living in a storage unit..got booted out of there..stayed on our couch for about two months in fifty below zero weather..( I told him he should grab his gear and move into that best man ever ( lazy asses) office untl he could get it done..living in his car at the walmart parking lot had a stroke to the point he needed tube feeding …booted out of long term care because he didn’t have the money.. died and they found him a week or so later..
        sucks..but it is what it is..

  11. USPS adventures. After a brief excursion over the rocky mountains and back, the fishing shirts that were swallowed in the west coast black hole have popped back into existence at my local post office and will be delivered today! 25 days transit time from Florida.

Phew… kids asked ..will you make a bed frame like the one I made for one of the kids ( I did a then and now thing..I’d make dressers..like most crap..it wears out and ends up in the landfill..so..I made a surprise.. A time capsule of sorts..them when I built it things they made..memories to recall).. simple castle joint….. I sold my thickness planer / jointer…. should I..shouldn’t i..I cut back when I went blind in one eye..no depth of field..I could have the grandkids do the jointery..use the saws.I could ask my grandson in law that builds houses but dam they are busy….or..could I do it with cardboard….low cost..easy to work with
