Job Cuts and Markets
No one has a working “market decoder ring” – so far as we know (no one has shared it with us – of that you may be certain!) – but our current knack says a move higher from here is possible. In other words, we could very well be at the end of a “sell the rumor” which might be followed with a “buy the news” cycle.
We actually laid it out on the Peoplenomics subscriber side Wednesday – more on that in a second. First thing today is eyeballs on the Challenger Job Cuts report.
It was headlined as “Feb 05 Challenger Report: January Job Cuts Surge; Lowest January Hiring on Record.”
“U.S.-based employers announced 108,435 job cuts in January, an increase of 118% from the 49,795 cuts announced in the same month last year. It is up 205% from the 35,553 job cuts announced in December, according to a report released Thursday from global outplacement and executive coaching firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.
January’s total is the highest for the month since 2009, when 241,749 job cuts were announced. It is the highest monthly total since October 2025, when 153,074 cuts were recorded.
“Generally, we see a high number of job cuts in the first quarter, but this is a high total for January. It means most of these plans were set at the end of 2025, signaling employers are less-than-optimistic about the outlook for 2026,” said Andy Challenger, workplace expert and chief revenue officer for Challenger, Gray & Christmas.”
This is likely to be used as political ammo in the mid-terms later this year. But there is an odd whiff to it that deserves a quick drill-down.

What are “anti recycling chips”?
Ther4e3 are some printer manufactures that place “counters” in their units (and things like toner cattridges) that can not be worked around – thus ensuring their product can not be recycled cheaply and effectively outside of their own econsystem. Kind of thing climateteers who would steal the BBQ fuel don’t mention because it’s not what the paid-for agenda wants.
Printer ink:
We only use Laser printers at the office and years ago when we were running a commercial grade HP color printer for our color needs HP wanted about $800-$900 per color for each of the 4 (four) cartridges. OUCH! Great printer but sheesh wrt consumables. Went out and found via the internet a printer cartridge company to buy clones from (at 25% of HP cartridges) which we have now bought from for years for everything but Drum Replacements (always get OM parts for that item) for 1/3 the price – sometimes 1/4 the price. Only gotten one bad cartridge out of many bought over the years. “Ink Technologies LLC” (always free shipping).
OH … and for Brother printers (all we run anymore) “IF” you want to use actual Brother laser cartridges if you go out on the internet you can find the reset codes to reset the printer /cartridge so they will keep running even after their internal chips tells them to shut down. We have those instructions printed out for each of our different model of Brother printers .

When my H-P printer would not accept a brand new H-P ink cartridge, it and the ink cartridges went instantly to the trash. I got a new BROTHER printer/scanner. Refillable ink tanks, no chips. I buy their ink out of loyalty now.

When the power goes out locally from 60kt winds, we floated and lived as normal because the sun doth shine. With fresh water still available the store of long term food will keep us for about four moths, or more.
The industrial sewing machine that we can set uo in the doghouse can function to trade for work on damaged covers, awnings or sails, and the trusty palm an d needle and waxed thread that I used to make a ‘living’ while vagabonding on the first boat around the Pacific works as long as I can still use my hands.

It is flat, straight (except for the “Jeffersonian jog” at the Ohio-Indiana State Line and with no impediments to visibility. ‘Makes me wonder if the driver had a California CDL.
That road is Ohio RT-49 / Indiana RT-67 and RT-18. 67 goes to Muncie (Ball State), Pendleton (Indiana Reformatory), and Indianapolis; 18 goes to Marion (Indiana Wesleyan Univ), Kokomo (Haynes-Stellite {now Haynes international} and the Elwood Haynes museum), and Lafayette (Purdue). I’ve probably driven that road 200 times. Bryant, IN (a town of a couple hundred people) was the first town I ever saw which had a “town yard sale” where virtually every resident held a rummage on the same day. A CStore just north of town (where 67 and 18 come together) averages about 50% passers-by and 50% Amish (and their buggies.)
