A rather startling chart in this morning’s ChartPack series.  As we explore a line-up with the prototypical 1929 extreme blow-off and present day market behaviors.  We’ll outline what could be a financially devastating remainder of 2025.

TMB versus MMB. Yeah: Trump Means Business versus Money Means Business.  As long as it’s the War Party’s wars and pandemic plans.  Just freaking dandy.

    What is great about this posting is the detailed write-up:

          He’s trolling to soften the ground for a comprehensive trade deal. We have tariffs on probably 5000 Canadian goods; Canada has tariffs on probably 8000 U.S. goods. There is a HUGE amount of negotiation possible between us. Prudence would dictate that Trump plan to deal with the commies and fascists in the Canadian government, in case they don’t get booted.

          Now the Panama Canal is a whole different thing. It is somewhere between strategically essential and strategically vital to us. Carter was incredibly stupid and foolish on this one. I believe Trump will take it back — legally if he can (we have grounds, but the UN has plenty of communist lawyers.) We created Panama in return for the piece of United States territory which we called the “Panama Canal Zone,” and to which Panama had no right.

          With an ascendant China, a purchase of Greenland would be a damn’ good idea, both from a resource-acquisition and a strategic standpoint. I can’t tell if Trump is trolling or serious on this one. I’d kinda like to see the Donald scrape that 2800 feet of ice off my ancestral farm, before I die, though. God knows, “global warming” isn’t going to do it…

  6. Renewed my Possession & Acquisition Firearms Licence (PAL) today, valid for 5 years at a cost Cdn$67.38.
    Needed to send a current picture, and renewed on-line at the RCMP website. Without valid licence can’t even buy ammo in Canada.
    Next also need to renew my Ontario Health Card and Ontario Driver Licence. There’s fees to renew. Everything expires every 5 years on my b’day.

    perfect time for fruit leather.. most of us know that potato starch can be made into a bio digestible plastic.. but to get a great fruit leather adding the starch to fruit puree makes a nice soft chewey fruit leather similar to what you get in the store..like the secret to market is brown sugar fruit leather is starch and lemon juice..
    the kids love it and frankly so do I..and Wal-Mart has strawberries on sale..

    3 cups of pureed fruit (e.g., berries, apples, peaches, or a mix)
    2 tablespoons of potato starch
    1/4 cup of apple juice
    2 tablespoons of lemon juice ( or fruit pectin)
    Optional: 2-3 tablespoons of honey or sugar (to taste)
    Instructions:
    Preheat the oven to 140°F or set your dehydrator to the fruit leather setting.
    Prepare the puree: If using fresh fruit, wash, peel (if necessary), and puree it in a blender or food processor until smooth.

    Mix the ingredients: In a saucepan, combine the pureed fruit, potato starch, apple juice, and lemon juice. If you prefer sweeter fruit leather, add honey or sugar to taste.

    Cook the mixture: Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly until it thickens. This should take about 10-15 minutes.
    Spread the mixture: Once thickened, spread the mixture evenly onto a parchment-lined baking sheet or the dehydrator tray. Aim for a thickness of about 1/8 to 1/4 inch (3-6 mm).
    Dry the fruit leather: Place the baking sheet in the oven or the tray in the dehydrator. Let it dry for 6-8 hours, or until the fruit leather is no longer sticky to the touch and peels off the parchment paper easily.

    • This morning, after a quick run across the glassy lagoon, we were in ‘town’ to shop. It seemed like someone from every close island place was there too because it was the first day after the big supply ship came in. Most stores have been closed since before New Years and today was the big rush. One store had meat and zero fish, the other had lots of fish and no meat. Shelves were still half empty, but the dairy cabinet was good, and the fruits and veg were OK, not as plentiful as normal.
      But while i was sitting in the little boat all along the pier, people were greeting each other with smiles and hugs, men embraced and touched foreheads, there was simple joy everywhere. That moment filled me with emotion for this world and the people, a place worth more than all the money and stuff we could ever accumulate. Our ‘families’ are not close but thanks to Elon we stay in pretty good connection. Even have an only Grandson never seen or held. They can more easily visit us than we, them. Our sailing exploring and adventure days are still waiting if we choose, but for now, if the world is going to have a wham bam experience I’ll bet this place is not high on their list.
      Hasn’t rained yet today.
      But it probably will.
      No rain, no rainbows.

  13. Had lunch with my financial advisor friend and the tax team yesterday. Early this year with the storms and all. I picked up a reprint of a movie poster for The Magnificent Seven who he mistakenly believes is the greatest movie ever made for a birthday gift. I was sneaky about it though and rolled up another poster of THE greatest movie ever made, The Wild Bunch around it. After our discussion I laid out my books and asked the standard question. How bad is it going to be. His answer was “We ain’t seen nothing yet.”. I’ve seen his facial expression before so I know he was being serious.

      • We meet several times during the year to review positions and strategies. We have been friends for years so I always lay out my thoughts and or ideas first. 2024 was a busy year with a lot of business and personal financial changes for us so I wanted to look into adjusting our risk levels a little. He reminded me that we don’t need to have the “irrational exuberance” discussion again. Consider possible impacts of just a few of the proposed policies being talked about. I’ll be focusing on mostly insurance and tax issues this year.

    Yesterday I stopped by the library who had emailed about my hold request arrival of the book “Citizen”. It’s President Clinton’s post-White House events picking up where his previous tome “My Life” left off.

    I reviewed the index. One page addressed Ms. Lewinsky, one page covered Epstein, and six pages touched on Benghazi. His Benghazi story segued into Mrs. Clinton’s emails and home server.

    The “Citizen” book contains no index under letter “e” for “email” or “s” for “server”. There is no index entry for “Foundation” under “f”. The index entry under “c” for Clinton Foundation reads “Clinton Foundation and, see Clinton Foundation”. However no page numbers are specified.

    I read the dozen or so pages that pertained to the above subjects of President Clinton’s truths. I did not inhale the other 400+ pages.

    According to the cover overleaf, this “powerful, candid, and richly detailed memoir” retails for us$38.00 / cdn$51.00.

  15. LA County is burning with hurricane-force winds and 4 major wildfires. Over 100,000 mandatory evacuations ordered. Malibu burned to the ocean. Fire hydrants out of water, and they can’t pump it fast enough to keep up with the fire suppression efforts. Winds will last till sundown today. Hundreds and hundreds of structures lost. Air quality alerts for the entire LA basin. They have bulldozed abandoned car to allow firetruck access. Home fire insurance will become unavailable or unaffordable in CA.

    • I plan to bujy lumber this week – prices will go rocketing this spring – word to the wise who love to build decks and such and don’t have 27 acres of harvestable timber handy

      • At the beginning of the first Trump administration I was in Home Depot buying a few 2x8s. While in line the guy behind me, a builder type of guy bought all the lumber.

        Within a week or so lumber prices shot up. He made a smart move.

        If lumber doubles again that’s how we’ll know existing house prices will be going up in value.

        And if Trump does the Day One mass deportations immigrant labor will be gone so new house prices will go up making existing houses cheap by comparison.

        But some in some areas house pricing will be offset by the missing residents who were deported.

        • It will be 2 or 3 years before CA can start rebuilding from the fire, except for the beach areas, where the (unelected)California Coastal Commission will refuse to allow rebuilding. The burned region is 80% blue, and those people will get a belly full of the red tape and bureaucracy. A lot of them will change to red.
          PS: Hunter Biden’s Malibu home, & the adjacent $19,000/month rented Secret Service home, both burned to the ground.

    • Fire insurance coverage in Southern California ended on September 1st, 2024. I don’t know if current policyholders are grandfathered in, nor if they are, for how long.

      The Democrat supermajority in the California Legislature thoughtfully capped insurance rates a while back. State Farm was the last fire insurance provider in the State. They pulled the plug because they could not remain solvent on the “margin” to which Sacramento limited them. Paris Hilton is going to have to pay the $28mln out of pocket, if she wants her Malibu bungalow rebuilt…

      Personally, I’d like to hear from the Surf Dude, to make sure he’s still in one piece. These fires are serious shit.

      • According to FOXNews, State Farm wasn’t the last, only the largest. Also, they grandfathered nobody. State Farm had 37% of all fire insurance policies and riders in the State of California and was virtually the only carrier in Pacific Palisades and along the North Shore. They cancelled ALL of their fire insurance policies last summer…

Co-founded in 1874 by the father-in-law of inventor Thomas A. Edison, the cultural presentations spread nationally under the “Chautauqua” banner. Author Sir Salman Rushdie suffered life-altering injuries in 2022 delivering a talk at the Chautauqua Institution. He was stabbed by a Lebanese-American Hezbollah supporter.

      “X” satellite tracker tom_bike posted an image taken by the EU’s Copernicus Sentinel 2 about 15 minutes after the Pacific Pallis ades fire began. Co-ordinates given were 34.07136, -118.54364. Looking at the publicly available Copernicus search engine, the location would appear to be in the Temesca Canyon between the walking trailhead at the end of Chautauqua Blvd. and Skull Rock.

    There’ll be no “military action” in Greenland, unless the Danes or local native tribes ask us. Panama is a possibility, but I doubt it seriously. Trump is still a pacifist. I don’t see him fighting unless he’s pushed into it. (If he is, I see him rewriting the concept of “overwhelming power…”)
