Ebola Goes Political

Pardon the unusual update:

President Obama has selected a political figure – not a medical expert or epidemiologist – to become the nation’s “Ebola Czar.”

Ron Klain, who was chief of staff to two vice presidents (Gore & Biden) and worked on the Al Gore recount project in 2000, has been named to the position.

Wikipedia’s entry on Klain sums him up this way:

He is an influential Democratic Party insider. Earlier in his career, he was a law clerk for Supreme Court Justice Byron White during the Court’s 1987 and 1988 Terms and worked on Capitol Hill, where he was Chief Counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee during the Clarence Thomas Supreme Court nomination. He was portrayed by Kevin Spacey in the HBO film Recount depicting the tumult of the 2000 presidential election. On October 17, 2014, CNBC reported that Klain is to be named the newly created “Ebola Czar” by President Obama

Hello?  Is there a doctor in the house?  …just what we need: A career political figure/lawyer in the face of what’s likely to be the most serious disease outbreak of modern times.  Idiocy reigns supreme, it appears to Ures truly.

America needs hard-nosed medicine – stat – …not BS CYA thinking.

This is just a wild-ass guess on my part, but if I were president (no chance, lol) I would pick up the damn phone, call the top 10 medical outfits in the USA and ask “Who’s your leading expert on infectious disease who can cut through administration crap?  I want them.”

I’m just guessing an Al Gore Recounter from 14 years ago wouldn’t be on that list.- Just a guess, mind you.

In GeorgeLand, you don’t call the Boy Scouts or Greenpeace if there’s an apartment fire – you call the damn fire department!

Meantime, as we reported this morning, officials in South Texas – Galveston environs – are trying to figure out what to do with the passengers on the cruise ship Carnival Magic should the Dallas lab worker, who was aboard and may have been exposed to the virus becomes symptomatic.

As our inside source tells us “We’re not sure what authority we have, but we think the district health officer may have authority, but we’re checking.”

Word circulating in the regional government circles at this hour is the lab worker is showing no symptoms, but officials are not taking any chances.  As one memo circulating outlines…

“…[we] also offered to help (if needed) with a Dallas resident who was potentially exposed to Ebola at the Dallas hospital who is now on the Carnival Magic, but will be flown back to Galveston from Belize….  According to CDC quarantine officer, this patient reportedly has no temperature but the CDC made the decision to fly her back due to precautions.   If she is found ill, UTMB has an isopod prepared.  “

For now, we’re in something of a holding pattern, but to pick a political/lawyer type to be an outbreak czar?  It just boggles my mind.

I may have to get out the trusty but rusty ViceGrips… looks to me like reality is being squeezed once again.

(more as warranted)
