Dimensioning Collapse

Yes, the anti-fragile crowd could be wrong. Complexity might actually speed up – not retard – financial collapse.

It is entirely possible that while Nasim Taleb followers have been spouting off about how complexity will “save us” the exact opposite is likely true for reasons we will explore today.

This is not to diss Taleb’s book on fragility (Antifragile: Things That Gain from Disorder (Incerto Book 3)  because it makes some interesting points.

Our counter to them is even more interesting because rather than approach from the blinders worn by mathematicians in general and risk managers in particular.  Left field events consume us as we adhere to a more generalist philosophy which doesn’t reduce to simply numerical estimation.

Humans in the loop matter greatly.  So does the gut.

Numbers like those potentially arising from an MCHVE – a massively correlated hyper-volatility event.  Like the one possibly just ahead.  That markets are already dancing around.

More on this after a few headlines and the (Scary!) ChartPack which will lead into this afternoon’s Fed rate decision and soft-shoe routine.

The world is in high-level musical chairs.  And the music is skipping beats – like it did Monday.  For today?  And early denial rally!

  3. Nice post George. Being well in my 60’s, I have watched the world come of age – well, at least in the information technology space. From my early days as a Marine Corps officer where the technology de jure was desk telephones and IBM Selectric typewriters to my current IT consulting gig – a blitz of mobile phones, laptops, desktops, etc – all networked together with our ‘modern’ internet.

Complexity has increased enormously – in many ways, but I will stick mostly with technology here because that’s what I see most days. What I see is an enormous cost of maintaining an ever more complex and layered IT/communication infrastructure. Trying to maintain the entire kit and cabuddle and keep things ‘running’ has been an exercise in frustration, exhaustion, and sometimes futility.

What seems to be backstopping this entire enterprise is two fold: massive money printing and the valiant efforts of a small portion of very dedicated and hard working developers who seem to ‘keep the lights on’ when things start to go dark. Most companies have added an enormous amount of IT staff, and will continue to do so if they wish to maintain a vast array of interconnected and duplicate systems and applications. As long as the finance guys can keep the money going or there is some cheap and hopefully half way competent source of off shore support, the lights continue to go green on the servers and ‘machines’.

Do I see it coming to an end? Yep, at some point, complexity wins and it gets too expensive or too confusing to maintain the spaghetti farm!!

  4. “Humans in the loop matter greatly. So does the gut.”

you know you said something the other day George that I read about keeping the mind active. I read a while back they did a study on the people who lived over 100 years old. You know the one commonality they all had was? They were all veracious readers. All of them read tons of books.

you know when I was a kid, Music on Record, Fournier 4 on *track, “Juke Box hero”, ” “My angel is a centerfold” J Geils band, then tape cassettes came and magazines were what defined us. Then came youtube and now tick tock is fastly replacing youtube. a Chinees invention.

In my house how we raised our kids, no TV from may to October, you could watch a Movie Friday and Saturday night on DVD but during the summer, you have toys, books and bike etc, go out and play… no xbox, or any of that during spring and summer….. and now all my kids’ are veracious readers… just like their mothers and me.

You know, I know. I didnt get here all by my self. where i am at in a life is the result of many hands, playing their part. Now I like Money. Money is my friend, close friend, i consider Money Family. Wealth and $ortune, good are always welcome at my house and have a seat at the table for dinner. I love making profits, i love competition, blowing past 13 other offices in sales and revenue in the 3rd week on the job and everyone at the manager meeing asking me for help with their office… but do You know what the best part of my job is? I had lady who has been wanting to see this rapper fella in concert for a long long time. Every time i went to her house, she was playing him in the background. I met her 9 months ago. Stropped by to fix her computer and just be a friend. Like i said before, Im always listeing. it may not seem like it. some people cant talk and listen at the same time. I’m always consuming everything in my environment. it may not seem like it when im having a casual conversation with someone, by the time we part ways, i can tell you how many frekles are on their right hand. and dont even know that. LOL

the best of my job is this. I got a call last night because they had 20 people came down with the Rona, all after getting vaccinated that week. and they desperately needed staff for the Kevin Gates Concert today at the Wamu theater in Lumen Field. I got the call at 10:02. By 10:17 pm. I had all 20 people on board and ready to roll. The Venue says, I need one person to stand at Kevin Gates dressing room door. They have to be on their A game! and they will be there to escort him in, stand by his room, usher him on and off stage, and escort him out, with his entourage. They will be his “Goto” person for anything security related. I said I have just the person. I called the lady I met, she works part time for me on gigs. You should have heard her scream on that phone when I told her that she would be back stage, guarding the person she always wanted to see and meet in person. That is the best part of this Job! My favorite part of the day, is paying people for meeting their heros. The best part of this job tho is, giving a singled mother, trying to provide extra for Christmas for her kids, working 2 jobs, who never dreamed it was possible to meet this famous rap star, ever in her life, back stage to not just meet him, but be his go to person for security on site. Isn’t nothing better than making someone’s dreams come true! and that makes me almost as happy as wining the powerball.. im so wealthy in so many ways! Facts, yo!

and a little more hope entered the world. a little more faith in humanity… another butterfly effect… and reality which is warped… headed back on course.. a degree or two.

and i didn’t do it alone… i didn’t make it to where i am alone, you all helped me, a lot of people helped me be facilitator of security, safety and making dreams a reality. we did this together. With THE DUDE. she doesn’t know about you. or any of the countless others that made me the man I am today, which most people call me Sir now, or Boss. even those who dont work for me. which is odd… im just Andy. im not an angel or any of that. LOL Wizard? Perhaps… but i didnt become all on my own. that is a fact.

Yes, George, Keep that mind active. I agree. wise words my friend. Havent heard from the boy yet… i suppose i will when i will. I made some calls last night.. they are looking for a person one the Incident response team. I pulled a few strings. I don’t know how much it pays. But you get to be in the big show. Its always a super super good time.

I am truly Blessed and Highly Fortunate! it is my hope, that you are as well.

    QUE: ~Power~

    • My wife’s grandmother recently died at 103. Up to 101 she took care of herself and her small property alone. I cannot recall ever seeing her read a book and certainly had no library in her house. But she was always active, around her house, with her church and with the family. She was always busy with something. Anyway keeping the the body healthy and the mind busy is a good thing. Maybe that is reading and maybe that is organizing the next church social, but never just sitting around being entertained. Lots of people seem to live as long as they have goals they continue to strive to reach. It has to be tough to lose your spouse, your children, everyone in yours and most in the next generation, yet still keep a positive outlook in life.

    • “In my house how we raised our kids, no TV from may to October, you could watch a Movie Friday and Saturday night on DVD but during the summer, you have toys, books and bike etc, go out and play… ”

Dam.. I didn’t know you had kids.. or was settled down for any length of time.I thought you were just a wanderer seeking something you could not seem to find.. a rolling stone never gathering any moss… Here all along you already knew what we all were trying to tell you..
Money is not your friend or anyone elses…. it is a drug.. you will never have enough of it if it is truly what you seek…. since everyone craves it..having it does help smooth out some of the wrinkles in life..

      • i have a whole bunch of kids. LOL 4, plus a bunch that are not mine genetically that call me Dad. When I was 25, I had little side project of rescuing kids off the streets. Most of them still call me Dad. Id take them off the streets, get them off drugs, feed them, get them clean clothes, bicycles and jobs and after a few months, they found their way off the streets and into their own lives. I probably rescued couple dozen. most of them were from broken homes with parents that were lost in drug addiction. And All those kids are in their late 30’s to 40’s and are business owners or have prominent jobs at places like Boeing and microsoft. One of them went and got his nuke certs and is in the navy now last time i talked to him. Most of them just needed someone accept them for who they are, believe in them, ge them to believe in their selves and a push in the right direction. I lived on the streets when i was 15. I know how hard it is all that. i have been homeless 3 times in my life.

I just george an email. now I have Baptist Minister, A Jewish Rabi, A muslim Priest and a Shaman working security for me and ya know what. they all call me an Angel. LOL! As if! I dont know why everyone calls me that. I am just Andy,. I dont know what to do with that.

Or they address me as Mr. Facilitator. They all work security for concerts and sports games because it gives them a chance to pray for other people. Im good with that as long as it doesn’t interfere with the job.

ya am a Dad. I have 3 boys, a biological daughter and adopted daughter and about 25 others that aren’t mine that still call me Dad. LOL

Money is a tool. like a remmington 870 shot gun or a magnet or a Makita Power Drill or a Number two pencil. or condom. You have to have the right tool for the right job. A number 2 pencil doesnt work like a magnet nor is it useful to put a condom on a Makita Power Drill but you can put it on the barrel of a Remmington 870 shot gun to keep the water out… but its not as useful as for what it is intended for. Money used the right way, works like a key. it opens up dooors you didnt know where there. Money is a tool. I do like Money. It is my friend. I dont worship my friends. LOL

Make no mistake, I have heard hundreds upon hundreds of poor people say, Money aint everythign. I am happy where i am at. But i never heard a rich man say, ya know… i bet the soup down at the shelter is way better than these Tiger prawns and that 12 oz porter house on my plate. Lets go down to the mission and get a bowl of soup and some crackers. i never heard anyone with money say,…. its better to be poor. LOL not one single time.

      • Money used the right way, is power. You know how many times i heard that saying, “absolute power corrupts absolutely. ” i think that is bullshit. i think money shows the world who you really are. i think power exposes you. if you are bad? everyone finds out. because Tons of money and Tons of power? Put a spot light on you. you are either corrupt or not corrupt. i am rapidly accerating to a place of power.. already there… and guess what LOB? people called me Angel when I was poor as f. People still call me Angel. and i keep reminding all of them. you got it all wrong. im just a sinner saved by grace. Im the wretch that was. you got me confused with Amazing Grace. I do have have that Amazing Grace all over me. leaves its mark on everything i touch….but im the wretch that was saved. that is all. dont confuse me with THE DUDE, im just andy. THE DUDE is the difference. i have made that mistake a time or two. but im pretty clear on who i am and what my part is. ;)

      • “Money used the right way, is power. You know how many times i heard that saying, “absolute power corrupts absolutely. ” i think that is bullshit.”

I use to think that.. the problem is.. like evil.. it lulls you into compliance.. just look at our congress.. the vast majority of them went into office with great honorable goals..then when it starts to hit you from every angle.. eventually it clouds your mind.
Of all those people with the king prawns and porterhouse steaks..bought one for the homeless guy on the corner..thankful for that simple bowl of soup..studies have been done by cambridge and harvard etc.. all showing the affects of money with someone that has money and those without..the can man was about the most giving caring person I ever met..he lived in a dumpster..

  5. the quote at the start of that Kevin Gates, video, I am living proof that is ture!

I out here in the Emerald City, changing the world. one life at at time.

aint nothing better than that. and when i leave this world in 57 more years… it wont ever be the same. and most people wont ever know it was me. but you saw a glimpse of it… and THE DUDE knows. I know… some of the ripples that created ripples… how far it reaches well that is above my paygrade. in the grand scheme of things.

im blip on the radar here, relativity my friend: if 5 minutes here is the equivalent of 2-300 years on the other side of life through the veil of death.. how many years is that over there when you are here for 118 years?

I always loved this quote from the movie the Gladiator: “What we do here, echo’s in eternity.”

you tell the Hopi, when you talk to them. I will be there when i get there, not moment later or a moment too soon. their prophecy cornerstone is still where i left it. nobody would know what it was by looking at it. its location is, stored in the vault in my mind. not to worry, i went when called, and i was there to open the 5th world door with red sky the shaman, and i will be there with it when i am there, to dance in the court yard, ~ Right on Schedule~

see ya all around.. i have a army to attend to and city to run. the mayor may think he is in charge… but he isnt making peoples dreams come true, now is he.

interesting that everyione I know who ran out to get the jab in the last week. all have the rona and bad right now. Not me, I getting stronger and stronger, healthier and healthier every day. :)

    • I’m polling office mates, but last week there were a lot of tired people with scratchy throats; rev 3 may have come & gone. It takes weeks for the jabs to work, if you got the right jab. One mild case, and multiple micro-exposures is probably the best way to avoid bad effects. A Moderna jab or two in the middle probably helps, provided you survive the first 72 hours or so, which unfortunately, is not a given.

  6. Complex systems fail in many and complex ways.

You need to install a nail. You have hammer v1.2. Basically a single point of failure: the hammer could break. Use a rock.

Or you have the Ryobi 18v nail driver. Drives the same nail, but with less human “effort.” However, the failure modes are many: dead battery, broken feeder spring, motor failure, trigger switch failure, nail jam in feeder, probably half a dozen I haven’t thought of yet. Complex system with complex failures require complex solutions. Several failure modes are “mission ending.”

Simple is better. Well, “more robust” might be a better analysis.

We live in a very complex society.

  7. “fragile ”

    We got scammed.

Now every time it rains in The D basements flood, expressways flood… everything floods.

Over time the money didn’t go to replace wooden sewer pipes, the money went to pensions and those people left Michigan. Vulgar gluttony, but people will cheer on the Water Department. And everyone has an excuse.

Our earliest memories contain stories of liquor bottles rattling around in union made cars and airplanes. During our entire lives Boeing has received bailout. Liquor bottles still rattle around in Boeing’s union made planes. Thanks, Boeing. But people will cheer on Boeing Bailouts, “we need Boeing”.

We wait for a Tequila bottle to get sucked into a fuel rube, the plane tail spins and the presdent dies. If it’s so and so (s)he got what they deserve Vs if it’s so and so we’ll all weep crocodile tears.

  8. I have a 2007 Dodge Caravan van. Nice. Holds 4 x 8 sheets in the back, flat on the floor, with row 2 and 3 seats stowed — and still close the rear door. I hauled tons of movie-making and blue-screen stuff in it for years.

It’s getting on a bit. I keep it well-maintained and serviced and clean. It’s not “showroom,” but it looks and runs Real Good.

So, out comes the new Dodge “Pacifica.” It a follow-on “updated” version of essentially the same car. (van) It tempted me, but I don’t want ANYTHING on monthly payments. Tested (drove) one anyway.

    Horrible.

Screens, buttons, a computer “managing” literally everything — God-awful over-complicated dash. I wouldn’t have one as a gift. The distractions and the difficulty of doing ANYTHING — even as simple as turning up the volume on the radio (Pardon me — The Mobile Entertainment Center) — becomes a trip down multiple levels of touch-screen. (A simple round knob gets the volume job done.)

Thanks, I’ll keep this old one up as long as I can, and when-if it finally goes tires-up, I’ll look for another one as a used cream-puff.

My Goddamed TOASTER has embedded computer controls running it.

    A Great Sage once said,
    “All progress is not improvement.”

Admiral (Then Captain) Adama wouldn’t allow his Mark Five Viper fighters to be networked. Then, one day, the Cylons dropped by and hacked all the other carrier’s far more advanced fighters into non-funct. And it was a turkey shoot.

    Only old-fashioned bucket-o-bolts “Galactica” survived.

(Yes, I know it’s only a movie; but it still carries a valuable message.)

      • too late – already is in the “spiritual” world of quantum consciousness.

They bee trying to suck everyone into “new” dimension via social/phones/video gaming..
Some refer to this “new dimension” as the ahrimanic 8th density, as ahriman (face seen in famous 9/11 picture of TT billlowing smoke splosion Ritual) rubs his bony hands together in gleeful anticipation.

Rudolpf Stiener/Anthroposophy did rendering and sculpted bust of this demonic POS..(hard to find now, someones scrubbed from net it seems)

Warned/predicted a coming vaccine that will cut Humans off from Source. Warned about being shut in – how unhealthy it was 4 Humans and how we need to get Outside in nature to acquire Sunlight, NRG and Community Spirit. Dude saw all this going down in early 21st century..rutrow.

    • Some of that is poor UI implementations. Most of the modern autos have the volume controls directly where your left hand sits, so is very easy to adjust the volume or tuning and never remove your hands from the wheel. I don’t like tech in my auto’s for a different reason, and that is because it quickly becomes dated. The tech is almost always 5 years old in brand new models, and it quickly becomes ancient looking. I can see the one big screen interface being easier to upgrade UI, and require less in the way of physical buttons to fail. I am thinking of Telsa 3,Y interiors. Personally that goes to far for me, (no wiper buttons or even glove box latch). But I can appreciate how it can make the supply chain simpler. Is good to have options, as a consumer. I typically have bought the lowest end models (to limit all those tech and comfort features that get dated or fail) that have some of the best reliability metrics. I use my phone for most tech needs. You adapt to most any interior quickly but I want it to be reliable for 12-15 years.

    • “My Goddamed TOASTER has embedded computer controls running it.”

My kids knowing that I love cooking and kitchen gadgets. They got me an air fryer..I love making toast in it lol…
The wife rolls her eyes everytime I get a new toy.. lol lol lol

  9. Dam dam and double dam…
Got loaded in the freezedryer and it has a very slight oil leak… mid cycle can’t switch pumps..
Well it’s been a few batches so it needs to be cleaned anyway…
But I’m not sure if I have a replacement gasket just in case…my thought is it’s coming from the drain tube..I have been planning on putting a moisture trap on it anyway…
It just irks me that I didn’t do a pre run check.. my own fault .

      • that is so true… It will work ok until I can get the maintenance done.. the down side to the freeze dryer just like a vacuum packer.. is you have to change oil.. and about every ten runs clean the oil container..
I have been wanting to put an inline filtering system in.. but since I flip vacuum pumps from time to time wanted to have a quick connect system on it..
this is about as good a time as any to set it up.. the whole freeze drying route has been a god send.. it has definitely paid for itself..
I did go and order new hose though.. I was reading a post that said that they discovered the first ones they had sold.. ( mine was one of the first ones) that they had to big of a hose and a smaller vacuum hose reduces the water vapors.. they also have a different pump they sell that burns the moisture vapors off.. which I find interesting..

  10. Comrades,

Chill out, everyone. A non-scheduled American air carrier subsidiary, iAero, has your 6 o’clock.

I was reviewing the company’s baggage handling policy along with aircraft registration pursuant to public Twitter video as Haitian deportees from the Del Rio, Texas bridge sought to identify and retrieve their personal belongings that had been unceremoniously dumped in a pile of plastic bags on the tarmac beside the aircraft upon arrival at Port au Prince airport. Incroyable!

Interestingly the same operator shows up in Spanish DR media from last August upon the repatriation by air from Alexandria, La. of 5 dozen Dominican criminals who had completed their USA prison time for federal crimes ranging from homicide, drug trafficking, money laundering, credit card fraud, assault, fraud and kidnapping – you know, just everyday “welcome to the neighborhood” stuff. Ahem, the newly repatriated arrivals were being whisked to the General Directorate of Migration in Santo Domingo…Anyhow the “La República” report went on to say that to that point 910 criminal arrivals of a similar nature had been made in 2020, and there were an estimated 7000 DR peeps still serving US prison time prior to their eventual repatriation to the DR.

A cursory glance shows indications of a wide-ranging Central American operation for the non-scheduled air carrier. Well, maybe this would be a fine time to let The Bureau handle things and instead break out that Tainter book and figure out the mystery of Lindbergh’s alleged La Ciudad Blanco sighting.

Don’t be worrying none ’bout Slo Joe simmering on the back burner. Nope, high fives are in order at happy hour. Fire up the barbie, set some nice wild boar hog steaks, and celebrate a win in a new Battle of San Jacinto. Break out the brewskis, Uncle Sam is picking up the tab. Cheers!

    • I wouldn’t be too celebratory. Uncle’s Swift RTS (refugee transport system) is sending planeloads of our southern border issues into both Saskatchewan and either northern Alberta or the southern NWT. Y’all should’ve axed Emperor Justinian when you had the chance…

  11. I’m sure that this has been said here before, but I feel pretty sure that we are wading deeper into ‘The Fourth Turning’. Currently about hip deep…

    • Dam.. it’s been awhile since I read that..time to out it on the re-read list..
Thanks for bringing that wonderful book up maj..

These documents appear to show efforts to obtain funding to do insanely dangerous genetic gain of function experiments with modified corona and SARS virus, with the further goal of releasing the proposed chimeras into the wild, with no appropriate safety analysis. The funding was rejected by DARPA for safety reasons, as it should have been.

If these documents are genuine, then they confirm that the original planning roadmap for the Covid pandemic was published in a funding request in 2018. As to why this hasn’t been made public previously is beyond me. Suppression of this documentation appears to meet the technical definition of cover up. Further, this documentation implies that guilty parties have been allowed to publicly engage in public disinformation campaigns, hampering containment efforts. There needs to be a special council commissioned and turned loose on this. The next logical investigational questions would be, if DARPA refused to fund this project, then who did, and who were the participants? Ironic that the answers to whodunit may already be published in funding requests. This information dovetails with other congressional probes:

The potential dangers of the genetic engineering have been concealed from the general public from the get-go. It is time for public scrutiny and accountability.

    • “The potential dangers of the genetic engineering have been concealed from the general public from the get-go. ”

I still believe Nothing is concealed N____ everything in those papers was let loose for everyone to know long long ago.. then millions was spent to discredit the information making everyone think it was some fake news story.. the only way to keep a secret is to keep it with one person.. in govt.. there are commitees sub committees and those doing the work.. the pyramid expands to thousands.. you cannot contain any of that.. so let the stories go make them sound unbelievable then publish sub stories discrediting them as some sort of paranoid delusion or some conspiracy theory..
that way even though everyone has read it.. and then given the chance to disbelieve it.. they can say.. we told everyone.. plausible deniability.. see you were told.. why you didn’t believe it is your right..
