How to become a High Output Production Writer (Part 2)

This being a holiday weekend *(Easter tomorrow), we will ease into part 2 of our discussion of the writer’s craft.

In part one, we went over software, settings, lighting, screens, colors, moods, keyboards…all those “little things” that don’t get the attention due them by casual computer users.

However, whether you are crunching out text for work or pleasure, there’s a lot to be said for having the support systems in place to make output as friction-free as possible.  A little diffuser with the right scent, the cup of tea (just so) and nothing on the schedule that can’t be pushed.  Ah, the stuff of Hemingway is just ready to pop, right?

Today we get into the “popping part” with a little theory and a number of ways to approach any writing project.

Which could be the start of your next career.  You never know, anymore.

      • Oh, I think the US will be in full economic collapse before the ‘mark of the beast’ shows up. I am always amused at many postings on this site and ZeroHedge of people saying…..’x’ is going to happen, ‘y’ is going to happen….they are coming for our guns, etc, etc.

        The reality is that you need enforcers to do anything. The US is woefully short of enforcers to do any heavy handed stuff. Yes, if you go to a public airport, there are plenty of TSA around but outside of very controlled environments like airports, enforcement becomes a huge issue.

        My belief is that the locks down were a one time event here in America – the American people, largely lacking in intuitive ability, were caught unaware and pretty much controlled themselves vis a vis masks and lockdowns. Fortunately, people are waking up to the scam, so a Chinese style lockdown is not possible in America – maybe in very BLUE cities, certainly not here in FL!

        In short, the state and local police and National Guard will not get ‘heavy’ with the people who they live with everyday. The US active duty military has a hell of a lot on their plate these days. Ordering a lockdown or any very coercive measure across a vast area is extremely problematic. You don’t wave a magic wand – especially with a population of gun owners who when they say ‘NO’ it will be final unless there is a group of extraterrestrials who they have hired for the civil war.

        Btw, my military background gives me an insight here. I remember how much work it took to prepare units for simple overseas deployments – and THAT is a pretty controlled operation unlike dealing with chaos in a large urban area. There is no magic wand to get a population of 350M to say ‘Ok.’ This ain’t Oz – Americans tend to be a very violent group of people when provoked as you can see in southern CA as gangs maraud across So CAL.

        Do not assume that another attempted lockdown is going to yield compliance – it will NOT be a slam dunk. That time has past.

        You know @Stephen.. the puzzling part of that for me was..The why… why did they allow BLM and Antifa go through all the effort to get the group of officers whose sole job was to protect the big cities most vulnerable in areas that were so well known as the highest crime areas filled with violence of our nation defunded and humiliated publicly…
        Then have an administrative special project to haul hundreds of thousands of illegal unvetted refugees from countries with hostility towards our country and drop them in those same areas..
        I understood that it would put the previous administration under a great deal of stress.. the destruction and pillaging the undo violence.. horrific.. just to leave those needing the protection at the mercy of those violent.. but it just doesn’t make any sense… the only logical assumption I could come up with is as crime escalates out of control on those high crime cities that they would have a reason to bring in marshal law..with curfews..then the public gun grabs using the rioting pillaging and violence that has been the result as the justified for the gun confiscation..
        Then a few years ago there was that massive stockpiling of ammo..

  2. One thing I need is quiet. Complete quiet, No jangly news, no music — even instrumental only — Complete Quiet. All “inputs” distract me, and de-rail my train of thought. Distractions like annoying but soft noises. This is one reason I get up at 0530 — for that quiet for a while,

    Additionally, I type at a furious pace to “get it all down” before the concepts fade. Later, I make several edit and correction passes. I fix bad construction, and strive to grind “Cousin Len’s Wonderful Adjective Cellar,” and apply Twain’s “Lightning Bug & Lightning” filter to scrutinize every word choice.

    It’s work. Focused work.

  3. Personally I was beginning to find all the media discussions about the oil crisis leaving something of a crude rancour in the sinuses. So it’s a refreshing breath of fresh air to see mention of essential oils. Perhaps someone in the group can advise of or has already concocted for you a tincture of strong blends that would turn back a tiger from leaving the mark of Z upon your territory.

    Oh dear, gardening issues on a Saturday morning are either wrascally wrabbits or lazy felines. Maybe one can gently ‘toon into “Garfield’s History of Cats”. Heathcliff might agree let’s save the heavy lifting of Emily Brontë’s “Wuthering Heights” until after lunch.

    When the president of Russia says the U.S. is at war with Russia, he’s probably right.
    But evidently not only are we the bully of the world, we are really really good!

    Seems we’ve learned a lot with our endless warring while the Ruskies still seem back in WWII or Afghanistan.

    Our ships are always massed with several layers of protection. Sophisticated equipment galore, often well tested in battle, the best crews.

    The ship was only 60 miles from land and had lacked escorts (sacrificial ship lambs). Even a war genius like me sees that could be a problem.

    Their local Flagship is easily sunk.

    A few drones are launched and they apparently cannot tell the difference between an F15 or serious attack craft and an unmanned drone.

    You would think they would have sophisticated, almost state of the art electronics, and be able to follow hundreds of targets simultaneously.

    You would have thought the ship’s drone defenses would have been set to kill once past a certain point and soon realize the ploy if they didn’t approach the ship.

    They must surely have known when the Neptunes were launched. When fired off, don’t they go up a mile or two or three then go down to skim the water?

    Easy to see in the beginning. In rough seas they would have had to be higher, 50 -90′ (?) above the waves and should have been easily seen.

    Am I to understand their radar could only focus on the drones? You mean to tell me their sophisticated radar cannot see a missile for the waves?

    Here’s a guess. At 2:00 AM most are asleep as is the Captain. A skeleton 2nd string crew is operating the ship.

    If I am correct about this, the line of command starts high up and the lower plebes are reluctant to take action on their own.

    Meanwhile, they had less than 10 minutes to identify and prepare for the attack.

    AND, no one on ether side would dare say the U.S. used very sophisticated electronics to jam the electronics and to blind the missiles. The U.S. could have had a submarine a few miles from the Moskva and blinded the ship for many purposes. Or one of those incredible highly state of the electronic art planes in the region.

    When the Captain farted on the ship the U.S. knew.

    You would think the Ruskies knew where the Neptunes were launched from. So then we have to wonder why the Ruskies did not take the facilities out weeks ago?

    You mean to tell me they were allowed to exist? Even if they can move around, aren’t there local Russian soldiers, moles or spies to report where they are? No spy in the sky things tracking everything?

    Oh my. The Russians retaliate by shelling the Neptune (and who knows what other missiles?) manufacturing plant!

    Isn’t one of the first things an invader does is eliminate items that can harm your troops -like missiles! Yet for a month and a half they allow it to produce items to kill Russians. Or leave in place the railroad or truck facilities to transport them?

    Re-grouping is not likely to help them.

    They’re such idiots we, almost, have to feel sorry for them. :)

  6. So, I know this has been discussed ad infinitum in the past, but I’m looking for a bit of a refresher. What is a modestly priced radio that would be enormously useful in the event that all other methods of communication are no longer possible? I did buy a little Baofeng UV-5R along the way but I’m looking for something perhaps a little more substantial. Bigger, more durable, and more like a bench radio but still something that doesn’t quite require a tower outside my house. I’m basically looking for something to put away in a Faraday cage until it becomes necessary. Thanks for any help.

        If you’re truly going to cage the system for use as emergency COMMS there’ll be no issue. Neither HOA nor curmudgeony neighbors nor local zoning board will give you grief. In fact, they probably won’t even notice…

    • Don’t put it away in the Faraday cage before you hook it up and learn to use it. If you’re not thoroughly steeped in radio lore, the sound of the panic alarm is not your signal to begin learning.

      Get with ham radio operators in your area and ask one or more of them to “Elmer” you (show you the ropes) long before you deem the necessity for the radio to be at hand. When that panic alarm sounds, your potential “Elmers” will be too busy seeing to their own needs to worry about yours.

      • Another key thing with ALL new electronics is to turn them on and leave ’em on for at least 24-hours non-=stop. This is when component “burn in” happens and it does reduce failure out at the far end of product life.

  7. Depends upon how much you wish to spend, how sensitive you want the “receive” to be, and what features you want it to have.

    A good antenna can take a so so receiver and make it GREAT if you are looking for shortwave only.

    The BIG problem with shortwave today though is that countries seem to think that because it is cheaper to distribute a signal via the internet, by a LOT actually, that they should just SHUT DOWN their shortwave broadcast transmitters. The BBC has now shut down most of theirs, the US has shut down probably 95% of their, and other countries have followed their lead. As a result the number of stations, and variety, that you can receive today is considerably diminished from just 10 years ago, forget 30 years ago.

    Voila …. Russia just cut the internet cable for it’s people wrt the BBC, VOA, and in fact virtually the entire western world’s news sources, so most of it’s people now have NO WAY to receive news from the outside even if they want to since most SW signals are now off the air (St. Petersburg being right next to Estonia being an exception since they can get Estonia TV and radio there)

    The technology is out there and on the shelf ready to go to make SW broadcasting better than ever, txt in addition to the audio, multi language translation built in, and even a low quality simulcast TV signal too … but no country wants to spend the money to put SW back on the air, particularly with the new technology which would require people to get new receivers.

    I have a bunch of SW receivers lying around in addition to 1 low band ham rig (gave the other to my son a few years ago) but in a SHTF situation Hams will be told to take a hike too, just like they were ordered to cease transmitting in WW2, so you won’t hear any of them talking. Not sure anymore if the Shortwave radios I have will be worth anything if the SHTF in a serious way, though still probably worth keeping a couple around and shielded just to make me feel good.

    Don’t overspend … for a nice receiver look around to buy it used not new. Don’t forget the antenna set up … a nice long wire out in the open will greatly increase your receiver’s sensitivity.

      In a REAL SHTF situ, there won’t be any Feds around to enforce such a rule, and no incentive for the HAMs to self-police, so my S-30 will stay on the shelf…

  8. If you want a receiver-only with no transmit, check out the tiny ATS-25 on ebay or Amazon. Small and battery powered, it will receive high frequency shortwave signals adequately with only a small whip antenna. I have listened to inter-island 40 meter nets on a small whip even under a metal roof.
