A Word about Acuity

A number of readers have posted comments alluding to media reports that a bomb was the cause of the California 7.0 quake Thursday.  Reports Friday were claiming “elevated radiation levels.”

Relying on two radiation monitoring networks, (one EPA and one private) we didn’t see anything abnormal.

But there may be a lesson in acuity here.  Remember, I’ve sailed most of the West Coast and am very familiar with currents.

The average along the California coast is 0.1 to 0.2 knots.  That is, one 6,250 foot nautical mile per hour.

Time of the 7.0 quake was

  • 2024-12-05 18:44:21 (UTC)

The distance from the quake to San Diego is approximately (Arcata to San Diego) 680.2 nm.

Dec 7 at 13:37 UTC (as I write this) we still have roughly 5 hours more until the 48-hour mark.

At which time, any “radioactivity” will have moved, even using the occasional 0.25 knot currents that stack up in the Santa Barbara area, a whopping  12-miles south.

So, please, remember when you read alarmist reports to check the data and run the numbers yourself.

If you live in San Diego and worry?  Get a Geiger counter and measure offshore in 111-days.

“The average speed of currents around Point Conception, California, which is primarily influenced by the California Current, is typically between 5 to 10 centimeters per second (cm/s), with occasional peaks reaching up to 25 cm/s; this translates roughly to 0.1 to 0.2 knots.”

I defaulted to the higher 0.25 knot speed in anticipation of math challenges.

  1. “when math is backing vogue”

Personally, it’s my belief Math should remain neutral, rather than back anything or anyone. Surprising how quickly my addled brain has let go of prior high function, often doing math in my head on the fly. My Dad had it, I had it, my son has it and … Grandling? TBD.

So I start paying attention to my mpg, doing checks at different sustained speed for an adequate period of time for test porpoises. Turns out my car gets much better mileage than thought. I just need to moderate driving habits.

Going forward I plan to drive just a little slower on sooper-highways and much faster through town. It’s the urban driving which hurts my avg. so no stopping either.

Indian Summer inbound: The high temp tomorrow will be double today, forecast to hit mid 40s so back to short pants? Well, no. But it’s interesting how we acclimate. Thermostat is set on 65 at night, 67 should we choose to splurge.

    Back to green?
    Maybe.

ps – two blizzards later, the big Canadian Goose flocks are on the move. Many shallow lakes froze during recent chill so we B a magnet. Soon flocks of migrating ducks will cycle (aka: Eagle Chow)

    • Egor.

Three feet of snow here the past week has driven all the geese out.

      Happy honkers to you.

        • Yes, I did have an uncle Bob, quite a comedian. Always asked to make sure we spelled his name with one “o”

I always wondered if the plural of goose is geese then why is the plural of moose not meece?

        • I think there’s an intellectual property with Jerry and some cat named Tom who does hate crimes hating “meaces to pieces.” Obviously, at least here in ultralibville, “meaces” would infringe. Similar to case law between foot and footsies, vs.feces which went to the supreme quirk, if I remember. However, may have been squashed at the 9th Circus in SF.

        • Long ago, a flight of Canada geese went far off course and landed in Hawaii. The weather was so nice they decided to stay, and give up that arduous migration flight. Besides… they were lost. Generations later, the neck feathers are decidedly twisted… maybe from that hurricane that blew them off course? Now days they enjoy protected status as the rarest goose in the world, and the Hawaii State Bird.

    • a new non OEM airfilter for $30 increased my mpg from 32+ to 35+. my little mazda get 550 miles from one tank. keep on top of your tire pressure too.

    • Yeah – good.
I mean with a look at the map, the questioon should have come up: Even ballparking 600 nm from quake to sd and 24 hours would mean 600/24 or 25 knot (nm per hour). Ain’t no 25 knot currents along Calif. Best I ever ran was a little over 9 knots (momentary) at Dodd Narrows in BC on a flood tide and that was a pants wetter, if you follow.
For lubbers: 25 knots is about 28.8 mph

        • Yes – and no. Yes, there are different currents, but these arise generally as upwellings. In fact, I was in a 0.2 knot (gps measured) coming down coast from SF and we ran into a .5 knot north current in an upwelling. So you have to look at currents as an aggregate, much as when we’re flying we realize that there will be the odd mi9croburst and downdraft. But once you are 680 nm from a weather system it never matters. And I stand by “There are no 25-knot currents (or upwellings) from Arcata to S.D. at the outer buoy to the ship channel…

  2. For some reason people like to parrot. Parroting is in the nature of people.

The current bombing of the plate is one instance. Biden/Kam being replaced was another.

Someone yells fire in the theater and everyone starting screaming and running in circles. Good luck communicating the fact here is no evidence of a fire like smoke or heat. The ceiling is going to collapse!

      • G: itrt ^ worries me of late. I have overlong said “well, I’ll get around to doing this or that for me or the Missus later …” that, presumes one has a later? Possibly we should do those things now, or soon at least. I’m in the mood for trial testimonials for possible resolutions (or not).

Ex: was stacking grunt stuff on skids, moving things less in the way (though hardly organized). Testimonial: I will drive the Cat more.

    • Relieved to hear it – I’m a geologist too and couldn’t believe the BS theories being aired. Appears to be a contagion sweeping the world.
I’m even noticing recent ads for phones, Pepsi or whatever where they feature masses of “drone-like” people dressed in grey and white and moving in unison. The “hive” mind is getting stronger every day. We don’t have an information problem – we have a processing problem. Everyone knows” but nobody “thinks”.

It always appeared to me that Turkey’s Erdogan has backed the jihadist for the sole purpose of destroying the Kurds. And now that it seems to be working out to his favor., just how much further will he go?
Will Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi join in on the staging and invasion of Israel? Turkey and the jihadist from Syria – Egypt from the western flanks and Iran – ‘anyway it can’.
Where does that leave Russia and the U.S. ? Once it starts will the Saudi’s back Egypt and Iran’s play ?
What a friggin’ hornet’s nest – just waiting to be kicked.

        • You ain’t just a woofin’. I think I hear the coach calling for the placekicker…

I’d have bet the Russians would not let Assad fall. I’m still not sure they have, and won’t be sure for many years. I’m assuming if they did though, it was after getting guarantees and assurances regarding their military assets and continued port access in the region.

I have no faith whatsoever in the Syrians’ ability to create a democracy or republic (or any other nationality in the region, save Israel), having had no experience with either its creation or the responsibility required to maintain that type of government. Frankly, I expect its dominant neighbor to create the government it desires — likely a theocratic empire (by whatever name) — but I expect a “civil war” first. It will be a proxy war between Iran and Turkey with warlord factions from Iraq, Libya, and Lebanon (and possibly Egypt) thrown in, all fighting for a piece of Syria, and whatever of Iraq’s WMDs got smuggled into the Syrian highlands (and are still there.)

It’s going to be really ugly, and it is going to last for years. I only hope there are a few Syrians still alive when the fighting’s done.

Could ‘the Crocodile’ be a submarine – lurking just below the surface – as a crocodile does before it attacks / strikes ?
If so., then the “First Blow of Steel” could possibly be a nuclear missile launch from a submarine ?

How many cubic yards of sea water would be displaced – in nano seconds – from a small one kilo ton nuclear blast on the ocean floor? The ensuing surface breach of a massive dome of displaced water would be seen from space.,
It was not a nuclear device.

  5. Google has announced that their new A.I. model can identify emotions – yet it wasn’t included, programmed or predicted in the development. This has a lot of ‘experts’ and ‘doom-sayers’ worried.
Are we [ collectively speaking ] developing A.I. too fast? It has already been proven and shown that an A.I. can and will protect itself., and then lie about doing it.
What kind of safeguards, if any, are being included within the A.I. systems being developed? Will we be able to “pull the plug” if one goes rogue? If one of these newer developments does get all uppity and nasty – what will it do before we can shut it off? How will we even know that it has cloned itself into another super-computer – as a back-up to stop anyone from tampering with it ?
Every day now there seems to be a new-&-improved version of an A.I. model that is showing more and more ‘independent’ thought., and actions., with the capability of lying about what it did.
Isn’t this the plot-line of thousands of dystopian- world ending, Ele event novels?
Artificial Intelligence may be the future – but I am not too convinced that it is “my” future.

    Folks,
Move over, Don Corleone! Notre Dame Cathedral’s grand re-opening welcomes the First Lady Dr. Biden to Paris while President Biden remains in Washington to attend to the National Christmas Tree. Besides glitterati such as a Hollywood actress and her French billionaire spouse, the Parisien spectacle apparently is drawing The Prince of Wales, the President-til-war’s-end of Ukraine, as well as the US President-elect arriving in a 30 car motorcade. Of course Mr. Musk received an invite to the goings-on.

This past week saw President Biden undertake his likely final international journey in office to Angola ruled by a Marxist-Leninist party since 1975. Simultaneously the First Lady was being fêted in a fairytale entrance to the Sicilian hometown of her 19th century forefathers, Gesso (tr.”plaster of paris”). Thursday saw her meeting with womens’ organization leaders in Abu Dhabi according to “AP News”. Friday and Saturday itineraries included a Cinderalla-like Royal wedding dinner banquet of the Qatari minister of the interior and former USC student resident of the Beverley Wilshire Hotel to be held at the Emir’s abode, Al Wajba Palace. The First Lady is also to deliver the keynote speech at the Doha Forum.

One imagines the US Navy-run White House Mess may be serving up seasonal “home-for-the-holidays” special fare to the rest of the multi-generational First Family in residence.

Zelensky is NOT the dude we inserted into Kiev’s palace. He REPLACED the dude we made into their President. Zelensky was allowed to “win the Presidency” only after he passed our State Department’s “inspection” and got their stamp of approval on his glans…

Salma Hayek’s billionaire husband, French fashion magnate Francois-Henri Pinault, donated over $113 million to restore Notre-Dame Cathedral after it was ravaged by a fire in 2019.

What is the significance of this number combination? My best guess is that the Knights Templar were rounded up, tortured, and executed on October 13th, 1307. That is 10/13/1307.

Jacques de Molay, leader of the Knights Templar was burned at the stake in front of the Cathedral of Notre Dame on March 13th, 1314, another Friday the 13th. The Cathedral of Notre Dame was once the site of the Temple of Isis. The Seal of Paris is the Boat of Isis.

  7. Iran orders evacuation of its soldiers and civilians from Syria.
Iran commenced the evacuation of its military commanders and personnel from Syria on the morning of Friday, 6 December, indicating Iran’s inability to help keep President Bashar al-Assad in power due to a new rebel offensive.
This development marked a major shift for President Bashar al-Assad, whose regime has relied on Iran’s backing throughout Syria’s 13-year civil war, and for Iran, which has long used Syria as a critical corridor for supplying arms to Hezbollah in Lebanon.
According to the Iranian officials, two of whom are members of the IRGC, some Iranian diplomatic staff, their families, and Iranian civilians have also been, or are currently being evacuated from Syria.
    President Assad is toast.

  8. What’s interesting about gamma radiation (detected in radon concentration), is that it can PREDICT an earthquake!

‘Subsequently, at many places in China, Japan, and India anomalies in radon concentration, often a substantial increase, were detected and reported prior to earthquakes. The most famous case is the Haicheng earthquake (7.3 Richter scale or Ms, on 4 February 1975 in Haicheng, Liaoning, China, a city with a population at the time of approximately 1 million). The city was evacuated before the earthquake, saving many lives. However, the Tanghshan earthquake in July in the following year could not be predicted and approximately 250,000 people died.’

  9. https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/10619127.2021.1954451 From same article, Italins went to jail for ignoring radon quake predictor!!
‘The topic of “predicting” an imminent earthquake surfaced again into the public in April 2009, when an engineer, Giampaolo Gioacchino Giuliani, noticed increased radon concentration in detectors that he had developed and installed for continuous measurements in the region of Gran Sasso. He publicly warned for an imminent earthquake in the region of L’Aquila on 17 February and 30 March. Several minor shocks had occurred, raising the alarm of the inhabitants. The head of Italy’s National Department of Civil Protection convened a meeting with other functionaries in L’Aquila to discuss the situation. The meeting resulted in statements to the citizens of L’Aquila that there was no imminent danger.

On 6 April, an earthquake of approximately 6.5 on the Richter scale at a depth of 9.4 kilometers hit the region, with the epicenter close to the city of L’Aquila. More than 300 people died. The entire city and villages nearby became severely damaged; see Figure 1 showing the collapse of buildings. The earthquake resulted in a trial, where the deputy head of Italy’s civil protection agency, together with other prominent seismologists, were tried and later convicted in court of neglecting warnings of an imminent earthquake and indirectly causing manslaughter. At higher court, the six scientists were acquitted and the government representative sentenced to two years jail.’

  10. It struck me like a thunderbolt. Really Made me stop and just breathe for a few
seconds, thoughtless, as it unfolded in my brain like a time-lapse shot of a flower unfolding into Reality. And then it was all there. Real. Palpable.

I was born in December of 1944 — which means I was conceived in March. Family history had told for many decades how my parents had taken my father’s Navy short chnge-of-station leave in Key West. He was in the Pacific on submarines for most of the war, and as a decent and resourceful tech had helped in the development of RADAR for subs — which was crazy Top Secret then, and way ahead of its time. He was high-rated and decorated in his time. (Never wanted to talk about it, though.)

One day — only VERY recently — I was ruminating on some of this, when I was suddenly gripped by a stark and fearful Realization down in my gut. Cold it was, and very frightening. In early 1943 my parents, fully caught up in the war as they were, did not, COLD NOT, know the U.S. and its Allies would win the war. It’s a thought almost too big to think. They knew they could lose — everything.

Us snot-nosed kids all grew up on victory movies where Hitler and Tojo are beaten, and the world grows up in the triumph of the Good Guys. Pax Americanis, and all.

An amazing thought here on December 7th, 2024. at ten P.M. EST.

  11. Obama is 63. While he may have had a major role in removing Joe from the presidential race, he is no spring chicken himself. I can’t see him coming back to power in the US. As to whether he can continue to play puppeteer from the shadows is looking dubious with the woke narrative in a tailspin.
The fall of Assad in Syria looks to be the sort of marker event that the fall of Gaddafi in Libya in 2011 was.
We are are roughly half way through Stu’s 2011 to 2038 WW narrative. Libya was the first domino in a series; Syria looks to be the domino falling in the opposite direction. The US strategy seems to be to play everyone off against one another, and try to ride the waves in all direction. F’n frog mythology in action.

    • Obama can not come back to power in the U.S., unless he’s offered a seat on the USSC. Where Barry is likely to surface is as SecGen of the UN.

Soros’ strategy is to play everyone off against everyone else, then re-assemble the ashes in his desired image. I **hope** our Dept. of State hasn’t adopted that philosophy. Nuland did, but she’s (allegedly) out.

  12. WWII? WWIII?

“(“the book the art of war.. ”
…Is not read in Islamic circles.”)

?????? seriously.. do you believe this is an Islamic battle? the Islamic faction members are the ones fighting it.”

    {This one deserves its own thread…}

You just answered your own question.

Of COURSE we’re playing around in Syria. The “Liberals” with bad intentions imbedded in our State Department wouldn’t have it any other way.

That said, the way one gets people in that part of the world to fight is to simply declare a jihad. Politically-speaking, Syria is an extremely-complicated piece of dirt containing a lot of different cogs, which don’t mesh together very well. Getting everybody to fight each other is probably easier than in any other Arabic nation. On top of the politics inside Syria, there’s the Turks and Kurds thing, which will be a constant issue as long as Erdogan is the Caliph of Ankara.

The Arabic nations all seem to run much better, more-efficiently, and closer to contemporary sociopolitical norms when they are run by a “strongman.” They are not capable of functioning, based on a shared-power standard (like a Congressional or Parliamentary system.) They can only function with such a system in an advisory capacity if the man at the top retains absolute dictatorial power. If a power vacuum is created, the country degenerates into feudal territories run by warlords, until one becomes the baddest mofo on the playground.

Libya is a good example of an “immature Arabic nation” run by warlords. Arabia (of the Sauds) is a “mature Arabic nation” and it’s a good example of what happens when the baddest mofo rises to the top and unites all the other warlords underneath his banner. The reason the Fahds are Saudi Arabia’s “royal family” is not because they all sat down at a table and talked, but because their patriarch, Ibn Saud, kicked every other warlord’s ass.

There are exceptions, but these are tiny, “single warlord” fiefdoms (like Qatar) and even they likely had to “fight to unite” then fight off their neighbors, before they could be their own independent emirate.
