A Second-Half Risk Assessment

There is nothing like seeing home insurance premiums go up 30 percent while coverage’s are cut, to get us thinking about the whole “risk industry.”  With me grabbing for the green eyeshades and trying to find Diogenes in this industry (without much luck) what better time (one month from premium due date) than to see how the insurance industry has been changing. Not frot he better.

Why, I’m so old I remember when red-lining had somthing to do with race and real estate sales – and now it’s all about fire loss potential and real estate…

From there we move into looking at other risks, like “spontaneously combusting nuclear events…:” which, wouldn’t you know, is right around the fringes of what comes next.

          BIC,
You are the Sangoma (‘Shaman’). I’ll guess along with more than a little help from AI friends that the lyrics you quote are in homage to “Hook” from 1994’s the “4” album by Blues Traveler. The song is derived from Pachelbel’s “Canon in D Major” apparently composed for the wedding of Johann Christoph Bach in 1694. As an aside, the latter composed a four part reinterpretation of Dachstein’s “By the Rivers of Babylon”. It recounts Psalm 137 from “The Bible” lamenting the Judeans exile from Zion to Babylon by the Sumerian King Nebuchadnezzar II (‘Wisdom/Literacy, watch over my heir’) in the 6th century bc.

The band Blues Traveler originated in the Ivy League town of Princeton, NJ, calling themselves The Establishment. They adopted a black cat as mascot and name for a time after a black cat sat in on one of their jams. Later they settled on Blues Traveler in half-homage to the Hollywood-contrived, multi-dimensional Sumerian god Gozer the Traveler. Fans of Bureau matters will recall Gozer’s 1984 cinematic appearance as the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man. A troupe of Ghostbusters defeated it at 55 Central Park West. The edifice was constructed in 1929 and its notable residents list included blues musician Rudy Vallée.

Most recent public mention attributes ownership of the building’s two floor penthouse to a Moroccan-American billionaire who bought it from the owner of a bankrupt music recording label. (As a “Motown” aside, the latter’s catalogue was eventually scooped up by a Nashville subsidiary [2020 revenue $440+ million] of the State of Michigan Retirement Systems.)

The penthouse owner noted above cofounded a hedge fund investing in distressed companies with a sibling. As chance would have it, the fund employed the daughter of #42 for a time during the first decade if the 21st century. The spouse of the penthouse owner’s sibling is a member of a multi-billionaire Texan investment company family whose fortune started out modestly in oil post WW 1. The family Patriarch was born in Athens, Tx., namesake of Athens, Greece. As chance would have it, the Patriarch’s executor later became the Governor of Texas in 1963.

No need to pull strings to join our minstrel of the studio DJ George. Tonight’s platter special is from the 2023 “Traveler’s Soul” album by Blues Traveler. Here we go:

          BCP,
The family of Madame Macron began their rise into the establishment 150 years ago at the close of the Second French Empire of Napoleon III. After tutoring the 15 year old future President of France for a year, she was summoned to instruct two offspring of one of France’s most wealthy men for half a dozen years. This month “Forbes” charts his worth at $144 billion. His spouse is a concert pianist from Montreal, Madame Mercier-Arnault. Perhaps you’ve heard her performances broadcast on BBC Radio including Stravinsky’s “Three Movements of Petrushka” (‘red Russian hand puppet’).

To our greater beneficence, Madame Macron, Madame Mercier-Arnault, and a Franco-Malian singer, Mlle. Aya Nakamura, were happily pictured on a Parisien social outing by CNews in 2024. CNews is a subsidiary of a multi-billionaire family-controlled investment company founded by Emperor Napoleon III in 1853. The recently retired company Patriarch obtained his career start under the banking auspices of the late Baron Edmond de Rothschild of Geneva. The latter allegedly became the wealthiest of his Rothschild banking generation. The Cnews’ parent Patriarch now of some $10 billion personal worth is allegedly a staunch supporter of the right-wing Madame Marine Lepin.

Here is a link to the “X” video clip which appeared on CNews showing Madame Macron, Madame Mercier-Arnault, and Mlle. Aya Nakamura in a good light. The latter Franco-Malian entertainer uses a fictional NBC of New York Japanese superhero surname, (Hiro) Nakamura, professionally. He can bend space time and teleport:

The Anglo-Bulgarian MMA fighter Miss Ditcheva appears formidable. The Bulgarian entymology of her surname may mean “powerful”. Her father’s Bulgarian hometown of Samokov may translate to “self hammer/forge”. His public-facing social media account headshot consists of a bear’s face. A recommendation appears for a club bar establishment whose name corresponds to the Bulgarian feminine equivalent of the Archangel Michael. By chance, does Miss Ditcheva have hazel eyes?

  5. Looked at the first 120 or so of your Best Places To Live list … looks to me like Texas raised some money and bought off the raters!!

Sorry list looked to me like BS since it clearly did NOT include the Quality of local Schools as a factor in their ratings, nor did it consider the Quality of Local Health Care in it’s ratings, and finally it clearly did NOT factor in (at least way under weighted weighted) the Crime issue.

If you have kids the local educational system is going to be one of the top considerations of where to live (all of FL sucks, the best school districts here don’t hold a candle to the middling districts in the NE or Midwest US), if you are older the quality of LOCAL health care is gong to be one of the top considerations, and everywhere you are gong to be concerned about crime particularly DRUG GANG crime issues.

Interesting to read, agreed with some of the selections, but just shook my head at others.

Four large boxes – roughly 22Lx18Wx14T
All four are “stuffed” with freeze dried food – from the company in Texas that I order from regularly. The packing list was taped to the top of box number one – and it is impressive – but it does not state who made the purchase.
There is a lot of money here. I went and checked my bank account just to make sure I didn’t make the order while sleep-walking, or something.., nope, no recent orders. And anything over $250 I get an email advisory from my bank. And this is a heck of a lot more then $250. This roughly close to $4,800. And I have never made an order that big.
I haven’t opened the boxes, as yet, to verify the contents to the packing list. For now, I am going to assume it is correct.., and just wait and see if anyone fesses-up to spending what is probably six months worth of long-shelf-time dinners and sending it to me – unannounced., for what reason, I haven’t a clue. [ Jumbo shrimp in Creole sauce ? / 2 Dinners – $54 – I didn’t know they made that.]

    Folks,
The “CBC” has issued a report in support of cripped Canadian musicians who composed and played despite disabilities. I thought crips referenced American urban gang members. However the word “crip” has apparently been “reclaimed by members of the disability community”. Here is a link to the “CBC” article. I hope it isn’t blocked to neighbors behind the Great American Firewall.

    https://www.cbc.ca/1.7542690

As chance would have it, the two Canadian musical greats mentioned by the “CBC” also hold American citizenship and are understood to live in the USA for the most part. (Does Mr. Trump owing Canada extra tariff duty ring a right note?) Also in the spirit of the subject matter, the CBC report of unattributed author and his/their(?) editorial team dropped a spelling “crip” in the second sentence as follows: “…, an associate professor at TMU’s School fo (sic) Disability Studies writes…”.

Certainly one looks on in awe that “Peoplenomics” rolled off the keyboard at its anointed hour despite Mr. Ure’s previous advice of a prior appointment in the dental chair. In fact, DJ George might well exclaim “he didn’t miss a beat!”.

Speaking of which, let’s give DJ George the last word on this with a cover by the Fab Four. Here we go with:

  9. I read the prognosis for the rest of the year with incredulity! While I really do appreciate other intelligent points of view, it seems virtually opposite to my own take on life. I can’t imagine spending the amounts on medical that were listed. My biggest expenses that way are dental, with eye exams and contacts a distant second. Life is risky and nobody will save you – it’s one of the first things you learn when you get stuck in a squall or TRW at 8500 feet alone! In life, you live or die due to your own decisions. Medical insurance can help if you incur medical expenses, but those may be anywhere from zero to infinity and you don’t get to see the estimate ahead of time. You may even be denied! Personally, I’ve decided that for now, I’ll forego what’s offered and go bare. Medicare part A is forced upon you to get SS, but I’d rather avoid using it. It’s pay for pain! For many/most people, it might work, but not for all of us. Often it’s best to just tough it out.

Insurance always has a profit motive, and fear is their primary way of selling it. Yes, all hell can break loose in your life, and good luck getting the insurance company to pay! Usually you’ll need to sue them, and they have lawyers on staff. Most of the time it’s better to self insure, since that way there are no exceptions to coverage. Unfortunately, with auto insurance, avoiding it is more costly than buying the minimum. Of course, each person has their own personal risk tolerance.

The article on quality of life in various locations was interesting, though the only metric of theirs that mattered to me was crime and violence. You can only secure so much alone and have to sleep at least part of the time. Stuff matters, and I want it there in the morning. Other things like schools hardly matter once your kids are grown, and we have the internet today. Medical services were covered in a previous paragraph. Climate matters – and that may exclude most of the country so you need to find where you enjoy. Freedom to be, to do, and to be left alone are probably primary on my list, and the article never mentioned those.

    • I used to view the Peoplenomics data with incredulity myself. But risk spreading it a bitch. Without insurance, I tallied up the costs of four (1/2) eye surgeries, today’s root canal, the one last November, two total hip replacements for Elaine…why, the list goes on. And then there’s my consigiliere who patiently schools “The biggest single source of bankruptcy when old is? Healthcare costs!” I wasn’ trying to be alarmist on this stuff. Those are real averages, real risks, and unlike auto where the Stqte requires insurance, the onlty “demand:” presently on home insurance is coming from mortgage companies. Do a private sale and you can risk=-spread back o lender but shysters in an office building? They won’t hear of it…

      Reply
      • George, I agree that you need to evaluate costs based on your own assessment of risks. Two eye operations and Elaine’s double hip replacement would certainly cost plenty, and for those with the intestinal fortitude to deal with the insurance industry, there’s the chance to make things more affordable. You’d detailed some of your insurance adventures and i commend you for being able to deal with those things to your benefit. I have no illusions that I’m on a safe path, and if I had a wife to be responsible for, I might have a slightly different attitude. That said, I’ve handled most medical situations alone, and delivered all of my kids at home with the highest out of pocket cost being diapers. This is not for the faint of heart, and it requires a very special woman in our society to want that. I’ve met decent dentists in this country, but not decently priced ones. I have found that dental care south of the border is equal, if not superior to that in our country, and the costs are about 1/5 of those here. The worst part of it is driving so many hours to get there, but I’m “retired” and the car sips gas. Walking across the border is designed to be intimidating, but it is what it is. For other medical care, such as it is, Mexico seems to have it, and I’ve not tried to use it (yet). Life is perishable and the best we can do is preserve it as best possible while enjoying the ride.

Real estate is a different deal. Land does not burn when a house does, yet the premiums are based on the total valuation, and “underinsurance” can make you a co-insurer in a legal sense. Going bare here may make sense for those with risk tolerance, especially in the face of massively rising premiums. There’s no such thing as an all-risk policy, and the companies know what to carefully avoid insuring. I’ve been denied payment after a house burned, and that was enough for me. First loss is least loss! Even getting an insurance company to defend against a slip and fall allegation required a barrage of contacts from my lawyer. To say I’m disgusted with the industry is a bit of an understatement.

I get that .. where they getyou..is on routine crap.. see to see a doctor.. you go to the clinic.. and they ask..insurance.. you don’t have it then we need a deposit up front.. or payment .. you don’t actually get to see the doctor either..they send you to a nurse practitioner or PA.. if you do t have the estimated they send you to the ER at the th times the cost..the hospitals and trauma doctors get overwhelmed ..
one of the guys we had living in our spare bedroom.. had a Cancer Clinic visit all paid for by the VA healthcare .. he got a letter asking for his deposit for future care..he of course didn’t have it he lived in our spare bedroom.. we get to the clinic and they politely asked him to leave..I get him back in the van and he starts to cry..what about me and my life.. I had to tell him its ok we will get social worker to fix it..they did three months later he bot in..later he needed to go back after the treatments..( he no longer lived with us) and the VA wasn’t involved his sister told me she had been trying to get him back in for a year.. no cash your out..for my eyes it was the same thing sent me to see a specialist and then they sent me a bill the office visit no coffee no cookies ten minutes no tests 4000.00 …
if you have money you can get into see a doctor anytime.. the insurance industry a joke at best but to get in you need it..
my wife has had minor strokes insurance catastrophic only was a couple grand a month plus.. for the twenty years they paid zero on anything.. Now imagine if those funds had been put in savings bonds double after seven years..that would be maturing now 980000.00 in savings bonds..but to get medical treatment you need that stupid card..
I struggled to get the supplement insurance to pay the dental visits not mucha couple grand .. they just couldn’t get it done.. Americans spend trillions on these needless policies that more often refuse to cover what they say they will..my daughter and her family is heading out in a couple weeks for a company sponsored two week cruise for a job well done..
Insurance.. its also why we have one of the worst ratted healthcare systems on the planet..its the business model. the insurance company refuses to pay then the deductible .. the medical institutions then have to raise rent on space to the doctors .. go after everything of the patients leaving them homeless and destitute.. our efficient politicians in turn hand out billions for research and development of new pharmacology then charge the citizens tens of thousands of percent more for the medications they paid the pharmaceutical companies to develop ..
your home loan home insurance.. same thing.. they send some jo!er to come out and tell you just how worthless you stuff is when you the home owner have to figure out how to replace any of it.. the fire in LA I had two second cousins all lost their homes cars everything.. oops the insurance they had paid in for decades said sorry nothing for you..
the healthcare industry can be fixed the insurance industry can be fixed..

I tried to talk the wife into selling moving somewhere else..rent as at the height that wouldn’t benefit either of us..we would be simply moving into the same situation we are in now..
now the clinker… 70 million people are in the exact same boat..
retail costs the president wants to get manufacturer’s to start making at home again..but to target the ones like billies pocket pool that are responsible with their business model would be similar to smacking your finger with a hammer on purpose..so he decided to punish those not responsible as a blanket tariff.. this ultimately affects everyone ..so seeing markets going up sort of has me thinking its smoke and mirrors to keep the economy from collapsing like a Weimar depression..

  11. I found a very interesting posting today on the Peak Prosperity website hosted by Dr. Chris Martenson (PeakProsperity.com).

It is a blog entry titled “The Signal Hour” for May 28, 2025 and titled “AI’s Dark Side, Economic Collapse, And Europe’s Plunge”.

The first 25 Minutes, or so, covers news on the fast evolution of the nature and self reprogramming of the AI code by itself.
    It is VERY disturbing.

Later in the 1 Hour and 20 minute presentation (I download the audio version to replay and take notes) there is a discussion (at 25:25) of how the “Big Beautiful Bill” now working it’s way through congress contains legal code that forbids (for 10 years ) any LOCAL authority (State level and below) from enacting any legislation or regulation that would hinder the implementation of AI systems OR AUTOMATED DECISION MAKING SYSTEMS for the next ten years (whether the systems came from the Federal Government or from NGO’s).

Thank you George for all the work you have done, over the years, to provide your website as source of news and as a gathering place for a group of delightfully interesting people.

If not, you’re just repeating a rumor that someone else created.

That “entered into interstate commerce” thingy is actually important.

The actual text of the actual Bill is:

      provide comparable functions to
      artificial intelligence models,
      artificial intelligence systems, or
      automated decision systems; and
(iii) does not impose a fee or bond
      unless–
      (I) such fee or bond is reasonable
      and cost-based; and
(II) under such fee or bond,
      artificial intelligence models,
      artificial intelligence systems, and
      automated decision systems are treated
in the same manner as other models and
      systems that perform comparable
      functions; or
      (B) any provision of a law or regulation to the
extent that the violation of such provision carries a
      criminal penalty.
      (d) Definitions.–In this section:
      (1) Artificial intelligence.–The term “artificial
intelligence” has the meaning given such term in section 5002
of the National Artificial Intelligence Initiative Act of 2020
      (15 U.S.C. 9401).
      (2) Artificial intelligence model.–The term “artificial
intelligence model” means a software component of an
information system that implements artificial intelligence
technology and uses computational, statistical, or machine-
learning techniques to produce outputs from a defined set of
      inputs.
      (3) Artificial intelligence system.–The term “artificial
intelligence system” means any data system, hardware, tool, or
utility that operates, in whole or in part, using artificial
      intelligence.
      (4) Automated decision system.–The term “automated
decision system” means any computational process derived from
machine learning, statistical modeling, data analytics, or
artificial intelligence that issues a simplified output,
including a score, classification, or recommendation, to
materially influence or replace human decision making.
