A ’24 Overview

Where we size up how the year has been and look ahead to next year’s challenges.  We like to have these lookaheads because they go hand-in-glove with other annual exercises, such as the personal financial statement discussion.

We have been – for literally decades – fans of the concept preached in management schools “What gets measured gets done.

This is a “tough-on-self” way to personal accountability.  But the alternative is a slacker’s life with no (or minimal) change toward the better.

Thus, we begin with a world review (our Seven Systems of Life) and use this as the playing field to plot out where the Future might be directed. With surprisingly little effort, too.

One thing people don’t seem to live to is the notion that if you are living in “harmony with Universe” Life’s a very easy “row to hoe.”  If you attempt to swim counter to Shakespeare’s “Tide in the Affairs of Men” you likely won’t get very far and you can be thrown for losses.

Not a long column this morning – mainly the charts and a few headlines to underscore our outlooks. But, then again, we had that super-long Tuesday report on Personal Ark Building (Part 3) which many subscribers haven’t been able to work into their schedules, yet.

Pour, relax, read.

So thanks in advance Gpops, alwayz knew you were a swell guy. : D

I would mention something regards ROI on all the energy you be spending on greenhouse versus a bitcoin mining rig or 2 providing heat and revenue, but its Christmas season, and I really want one of dem new Russian sniper rifles wit ammo. Thx again – Ure the best!

  2. Another good one George. Well done. My experience over the years with the table top hydroponic units are OK but they all had shortcomings. Mainly their size. Space must be allowed for their produce. After that they all seemed to suffer component failures after a short time of around a couple years. The pumps would fail most often and were not hard to replace. Next were the controllers. On the Aero units LED light panels would start blinking and indicate the LED was at end of life and direct you to their website to purchase a replacement. I also did not like the convoluted instructions to adjust the time of operation or to allow you to set your own timers. The last Aero unit is currently humming along at 11 months old. All the others were stripped for parts that are n use in the hoopty. My hydroponics adventures continue out `there now.
I found they are well suited for use on location like your kitchen or a dining room. Diana grew flowers in a unit in the dining room a couple years ago and the remaining Aero unit that’s approaching 2 years old next month is growing some pot herbs in the kitchen. I got as much out of learning about plant physiology and nutrient chemistry as I did trying to hack the controllers and modifying the hardware. I look forward to watching your adventures.
    Stay safe. 73

    • Great comments – and yeah, I looked at the dwarf plants and the space for full sized and decided that I weould use the grow sponges as a transplantable medium. That is, imagine a workflow where you
      a) start the plants to 2-3 inches high in the hydroponic rig.
      b) harden them off a bit and move the plants to the raised beds
Figure this will (with 4-5 starts per year for each 12 pod mean 60 seedlings – which at Lowes will be pushing $200 worth of product.
As you can see, for me, it’s a “time on task” and with heavy mulching around the transplants, a real leg up on reduced garden work to keep down weeds and so forth…

      • reco you get INTO Compost, Kemmosabe.
The big red earthworms make quick work of composting Ure all Ure scraps and whatnots – hell those things eat cardboard/newspaper.

        – and when they Poop – which they do often – we are talking worm casings – that is some fine ass growing medium, like super fine.
Plus there is moola in those earthworms.. (Red Wrigglers/Eisenia Fetida) & Red Worms(Lumbricus Rubellus) – both the Worms and the Casings are valuable as “resellers” of Ure excess.
Composting will also save Ure plants from all sorts of no-goodniks in the garden.

      • for ROOT crops.. yes.. for them then a embroyery hoop.. bag system.. the bag holds the product.. at the bottome a return line.. a small basket works good or a five gallon bucket with a drain line.. check out..
Larry.. great guy.. super nice guy.. lives in minnesota and has people following him from all around the world.. simple the gutter is the feed and drain trough..
        https://youtu.be/KOZKkpyJLf0?si=Ip_N4k_qe4FYS63E
Now if you go to Washington State University.. he is a wonderful teacher and a nice guy himself to.. he uses the dual.. the top feed and the bottom feed..

        https://youtu.be/nXy32Dr4Z4A?si=qoxy6K-oM5K4E6lI

Aztecs used terracing.. the Mayans used the deep well.. a lidar scan of south america you can see the canals.. but now that would get me out yacking about them and their methods..

      • The issue I had was BEES… there aren’t any .. I had some of the most beautiful plants in the world.. no fruit.. you need BEES… so every year now I put in bumble bees .. the GMO seeds and plants kill bees.. the bee guy won’t drop a hive close by.. all the farmers plant gmo.. and his lively hood is his bees.. he would take care of a hive if I put them out but he won’t put his bees in danger..

      • Green onions, garlic, parsley, chices and most herbs do well that way. Consider containers for as much of your low growing greens and such. Save the earth garden for corn and beans. Have fun with it is most important.

        • I tried corn.. you have to have a six inch separation.. and since it is hydroponics.. you need a stable guide.. what I found was in hydroponics.. the plant has a tendency to tip.. what was funny about Larry and his grow system.. is.. he did air pruning.. and he had corn three times taller than a normal stock of corn.. he got three times the product to.. the root ball was as big as his five gallong bucket..

    • Have you looked into the Kratky method? No electricity, just set it up and leave it, developed in Hawaii. Temperature, length of day light and dilution of nutrients solution during rains can be challenging though in this State.

    • Hank- Listening to David Webb’s documentary, his family history from the Great Depression era sounds familiar to me, as do his solutions. Webb has a great deal more insider’s knowledge of financial and banking systems than most of us, but somehow, his views and solutions sound just like what Ure Urban Survival readers are attempting. Get out of debt, stay away from derivative financial constructs, be prepared to produce food if needed, and concentrate on being happy. I don’t understand why this isn’t obvious to more people. Extraordinary popular delusions and the madness of crowds are to blame I suppose. His YouTube documentary is worth a listen. This was a good post Hank.

      • The Truly Lawless Ure is the fellow who avoids falling under purview of the Law.
Hence, no mortgage, no loans, no long-term debts, no auto loans, no liens, and soon now, a move out of banks and into government holdings as the risk of bail-in will rise next year. The government is not (as) likely to screw its own bondholders, but banks may seize bonds as assets if in their holdin companies, as I read it, even with supposedly segregated funds.

        • What’s Ure opinion of the safety of US Treasury-backed money market funds from a national broker like Schwab?

        • We maintain a TreasuryDirect account. Figure when the collapse gets rolling, we will roll into cash and out of any remaining paper and then put it into the Treasury from the (big bank). That way it should not be subject to becioming assets of creditors (rather than segregated funds that it should be, but the crooks changed that). We will still keep 30K or so in bank for a year’s worth of (whatever) but when it hits, I figure the govt won’t screw bondholders – or they won’t be a govt for long.
Unless you want to do STRIPS (which – from memory civvies can’t w/out a broker) you can rolol 32-day bills to your hearts content and had your money technically out of banks if I read things right.
But Ure is paranoid, of course, so do your own research.

        • 1). What’s Ure opinion of the safety of US Treasury-backed money market funds from a national broker like Schwab?
2). The main obstacle I have to ramping human food production up is the lack of a useable self-propelled garden tiller, but I don’t want to drop $20,000+. Changing 3-pt hitch implements on my old diesel tractor is back-breaking labor, and the old tractor isn’t a good match to a PTO tiller (too big and I’ve been told the PTO is wrong for a tiller). I have a rear-tine mid-size Troy-Bilt, and an older mid-tine, and both are instruments of torture on black Texas clay. I’ve tried the little electric tillers, and they are just as bad applied to a large garden plot. Anyone got any suggestions? The goal here is to break ground, not my back. The cost of one MRI negates the advantage of a garden in normal times for multiple seasons.

        • @n____

          $20,000 for what?

It is the wrong time of the year to shop for tractor/tillers but here’s one:

          https://offerup.com/item/detail/1574708597

That is a JD Model 30 (“30-hydro”) tiller. Even if it needs help, it, alone, is worth more than the $2000 ask. The 322 is 40 years old and a magnificent little $4000 beastie. The deck looks like it’s in good shape, has the mule drive, and is worth at least $700 — and those are used prices. It would probably cost close to $1000 to get it to Texas, but you’d have a heck of a margin for repairs, and you could “offer up” considerably less than 2-large and maybe score it around $2000 counting shipping.

          Alternatively, there’s this one:

          https://www.ebay.com/itm/295937937256

which is 4″ larger, 200 pounds heavier, and comes with $700 worth of front-end weights (and weight bracket) but has the (~$700) mechanical tiller and is still going to cost you $1000 to have U-Shipped to you. Still, $7000 is a lot less than $20,000, and either of these machines would till 20 acres every year for decades, likely with only occasional oil changes. I used to till about that, when I tilled other people’s gardens with my 318/30-hydro…

This is not a recommendation or an endorsement, but merely an example.

      • “…be prepared to produce food if needed, and concentrate on being happy.”

I would add to that, have at least a 6 month supply of food to get you to and through a growing season. Keeping a few bags of fertilizer in a cool dry place will be helpful, too. Most vegetables take around 60 days after planting the seeds to reach harvest ripeness.

    • I felt like Glenn Beck stammering at yet another insult to our eyes, ears and minds coming out of D.C. when I read that. Must have been done when no one else was around?? When would that BE in our capitol building?? Did they hang a “Do NOT Disturb” sign on the outside of the doors? Did they clean up with Clorox wipes, like, at least 10 times afterward? Talk about desecration!!

    • seriously.. no one is there.. congress is on vacation.. having been in the hallowed halls of the capital.. I can totally see that happening.. Usually it is with the citizens getting screwed.. but when the cats away.. the staff will play LOL LOL LOL…You don’t believe those jokers actually work reading the shit that the congressmen refuse to read do you LOL LOL.. when I worked for govt.. we had one recliner.. wanted to get a second one.. and the state jokes.. what is yellow and sleeps eight LOL LOL LOL the new dump truck LOL LOL LOL..
wanna change a law..send a letter to every member of congress.. if you have twenty thousand letters a day to every member the law will be changed in lightning speed to I might add.. .. wanna be an asshole then make them sign for it.. LOL LOL LOL if it takes one farm boy two hours it would take forty federal workers eight or more.. per truck.. just to pitch and toss..
I wrote our congressman once on a subject.. and he sent me a fifty pound box of shit that didn’t even have anything to do with what I asked him.. he was being a smart ass…the question I asked was one that made him or someone in his office actually think..

    • I lived in a very poor school district in another state when I was in elementary school. My sibling and I constantly complained about how bad the school lunches were, and my mother dismissed it as spoiled juveniles. She couldn’t get a job as a teacher there, because we were native Texans, and all of her teaching credentials were invalid outside Texas, but someone talked her into being a substitute teacher at the elementary school I attended when they were short handed. After eating the school lunches for a week or two, Mom made sack lunches for the remainder of our time there.
Insects in the school lunches doesn’t really surprise me.

  4. “Rand Paul Is Absolutely Right About Getting US Troops Out of Syria ”

Pardon me while I try to look surprised.

Trump tried to get them out. He was overruled by Thoroughly Modern and the “experts” at the Pentagon.

When he gets back in, I’d be willing to bet Trump would install an honest and patriotic O-4, 5, or 6 as Chief of Staff, long before he puts another commie or neocon in that position.

    • yes.. but when trump said he was going to get them out.. Assad didn’t want us to go so he gassed his own people to get us to stay LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL

      • yes.. but when trump said he was going to get them out.. Millie didn’t want us to go so he gassed Syrian civilians to get us to stay

        Fixed that for you…

  5. ” U.S. announces US$300 million arms sale to maintain Taiwan’s C4 capabilities”

WTF is Taiwan going to do with 300 mil? That’s like 100 M-16s and a case of five-fifty sixes, under Bidenomics…
