Tripping Over Tuesday: Strike and Cover?

The media are showing their colors (and if you look closely, their puppet strings) as you read coverage of the mess in Labor.  Is there a “Protect Harris” movement going on?

Port Strike Update as Teamsters Launch Foul-Mouthed Tirade at Biden Admin – Newsweek and Picket lines up as port strike begins for thousands of New York and New Jersey dockworkers – CBS New York (cbsnews.com), it certainly struck us as odd that at 5 AM, a major story like this was not THE dominant lead on sites like The Drudge Report.  Not the Israeli invasion of Lebanon which has been 100 percent unsurprising since the pager and radio attacks on Hezbollah.

Would Matt Drudge soft-sell the strike and flip public attention to Lebanon – one lining huge the “Breaking News” strike over political ideology?  I don’t think so, but I’m also not the only one to notice a change in how the winds blow Drudge headlines.  Wikipedia offers this:

“By 2020, some prominent conservatives—including President Donald Trump—had concluded that the Drudge Report had abandoned its alleged conservative ideology, with Fox News primetime host Tucker Carlson stating, “Matt Drudge is now firmly a man of the progressive left.”[59] In 2020, Austrian social scientist Christian Fuchs of the University of Westminster described the Drudge Report as an alt-right website.[60]

Our soft-sell ponder isn’t Drudge-specific:  the soft-sell might be driven by more graphics from Lebanon, not the conspiracy whispered “liberal media bias keeping Joe and Kamala out of political damage” this close to the election?

There you have it – first thing “stuck in my craw” for the day.  I’m sure the story will be front and center shortly (with a picture ) and I’ll be  shown to be “just off tilting at windmills.” That IS what washed up old news directors do, sometimes. They look at their own 65-years of reporting and wonder “Anyone left who believes in Lead Local?” Or, are we in “If it bleeds, it leads” territory for good?”

Strike Drives Oil Patch Blues

From our Houston Bureau:

“Houston is home to Port of Houston. This strike is going to be ghastly for the entire US, and Houston in particular. What worries me more is a potential for violence should this strike drag on for weeks, even months, something that will have a direct impact on the upcoming election next month. We have 2 months to go before hurricane season officially ends, but I recall one year when it dragged on well into December.”

Strike could cost dems the election, as we see it. What happens if Biden listens to the Chamber of Commerce? U.S. Chamber Letter Calling on President Biden to Invoke Taft-Hartley, Avoid Work Stoppage at U.S. Ports | U.S. Chamber of Commerce.  So much for the right to negotiate wage and working conditions so long touted by dems, huh?

I’m willing to bet the Harris speech writers are negotiating right now: Lay Taft-Hartley at the feet of Slo, or have Kamala pick it up and run with it as evidence of her “true leadership” skills. (Yeah…whatever. They are behind the curve no matter what, now… )

One More Thing

Oh, yeah – the Biggest Story of the day really is the long shore strike.  Because it’s very likely to impact the global behavior of Russia and China.  Because out west, the U.S. having labor woes will mean “plausible deniability” if China goes the embargo route against Taiwan later this month. And Russia will eye the U.S. docks with deep consideration of impacts. Because, as one source explained to us:

Sunny Point is operated by an Army Transportation Port Brigade, but I don’t know if there are also civilian cargo handlers or not. If so, they may also go on strike, which could have some impact on US ability to flex forces across the Atlantic. Which could put other factors into play. Just an idea….”

But when you remember back to the Francis Scott Key (Baltimore) Bridge accident in March of this year, you have to wonder if America’s adversaries (content to be pretend contenders for now) haven’t got an “isolate America plan” which could involve Labor actions and additional “navigational accidents.”

Guess time will tell, but another shipping accident or two would move events from “wild speculative ravings” to “Hmm…”

Remember a month, or was it two, back when I said “If you need to buy any electronics, load up now! (this was in August).  We are the proud owners of two back-up Win11 computers and a new 55″ in the office.  And here this morning with the ports shutting down and Taiwan still a wild card, the purchases look far less stupid than they did at the time.

Financialese

New weekly unemployment figures just hit.

Labor’s JOLTS (job openings, layoffs, terminations, and separations) report drops at 10 AM this morning which may result in a market change of direction…eyes open.

Look for a jump in UI filings in a few weeks when the hurricane impacts may begin to dribble into the mix. The flood of those is a week or three out.  We also see this as justr ore evidence the Fed got political with its half point cut, Which Powell is distancing on now:  Fed Chair Powell Says Rate Cuts Aren’t on ‘Preset Course’ (wsj.com).

Stock futures are weak.  Dow’s down a hundred, S&P down about 5 and the techs almost even when we looked.

Bitcoin is under $64-thousand again.  And we are using the hurricane Helene disaster in our own noodling about alt.money to wonder just how BTC would perform in a live-fire disaster (like the ‘cane) in North Carolina,  We STILL don’t see the magic of made up secret numbers as “money” but you all have fun.  And don’t forget to check the box on the 1040.

The Foregone War

Yes, of course it’s a war.  But not if your only source of gouge is the NY Times: Why Did Israel Send Troops Into Southern Lebanon? – The New York Times (nytimes.com).  Again, we wonder about the one-month proximity of US elections on newsroom mental acuity. Yes, it’s a war and all the adjectives & modifiers in the world don’t stop bullets.

About here, things get interesting. There is an election a month and a couple of days from now.  In this election, the Jewish vote’s influence is significant. But so is the vote of Muslims who have been imported en masse by an administration near you.  Which we think accounts for headlines like US out of step as world reacts to Israel’s ground offensive into Lebanon. Al Jazeera.

Meanwhile, we’re wondering what Vlad Putin was doing up so late last night with this prime minister in Iran:  Zayn on X: “Russian President Putin to hold an emergency meeting in Moscow in the next 10 minutes. Prime minister is in Tehran, Iran ? Something big is coming.

Yep – something already has happened: US: Ukraine free to strike Russia with own weapons without permissions. Of course that’s a BS/weasel-speak because all Ukraine would need to do is change a battery or hand ’em a can of spray paint and they could say “their weapon” was involved. We’ve got a small wager on a Russia strike on a western nuke plant before the end of November if you’re playing the classic wartime news follower’s game “Targeting and Timing Roulette.”

We also found it interesting that Spain urges Israel to halt its ground raids in Lebanon | Reuters.  Which interests us because one of Spain’s biggest (financial) industries is charging tolls to American drivers who paid to build (misnamed) public highways. Only to have miscreants in office “lease them out” to foreign corporations (including a biggie in Spain):  U.S. roads, with foreign owners (tampabay.com). See, this is the kind of thing when DEI becomes more important than counting pennies and shepherding financial responsibility (a part of which is fee simple ownership in capital assets) by government.  Are we the only people left who remember “If it’s leased, you don’t own it for now…” Sheesh!  America has been leased out from under us.

I hope you decide to somehow keep the comments open George

  2. ???????????

The question I have is.. are the ports still being run by the company that produces and deploys CLUB-K defense systems.. and if they are aren’t they owned by companies that are sympathetic to what is going on in the middle east and Ukraine..
the same thing with our toll roads.. orange barrel hell.. we sold them off to companies that are sympathetic to other nations survival.. not the USA survival.. and if you are going to take down the dollar and other fiat currencies as king of the mountain.. But wouldn’t you want a weak president rather than a strong one..

  3. I have been crunching the numbers and looking at the fall-out from the dock strike. This could be rather devastating. The union head is still pissed-off and really laid into Biden and Harris with a very foul-mouth, dock-workers ‘style’ rant. I would not want to be one of the suits that goes in to negotiate with him. BYOBB [ Bring Your Own Baseball Bat.] I can not imagine Harris trying to deal with this guy. What a fiasco that would be.
    – The economic repercussions from this strike has the potential to hit the entire economy with over 50% of in-bound and out-bound shipping for the entire country now at a stand-still. And several key voter swing-states are caught up in this, also. The domino effect on jobs will grow weekly as the effects spread across the country. Whole sale, retail, manufacturing – all will be slapped., very hard if this strike last for any length of time.
    – One analyst said this may take months to resolve – as the demands are way above what anyone was expecting., and the union looks like they are not going to budge an inch. It is possible that if this strike goes too long that the West Coast could join in on the strike in solidarity.[ Rumor] Which would effectively shut-down and cripple the country.
    – Could this be the economic pin that finally pops the financial bubble ??
    – And what will this do to the Harris campaign? As she is already the target from the union. The longer this goes, the more blame they are going to lay on her.

    • It seems that the entire federal government has abdicated! There’s no federal money available for the disaster in North Carolina and East Tennessee, but 2.7 billion went to Ukraine! FEMA(a mixed bag to say the least) seems to be MIA in the disaster zone, and people helping each other has actively been discouraged with threats of arrest. It’s still happening though, thanks to the remains of the American spirit.

The dock strike could have been delayed until after the Christmas with by a simple presidential invocation of Taft-Hartley. I can only imagine that this idiotic strike was allowed to happen on purpose. Between I-40 being compromised by the hurricane and the dock strike, along with our treasure stoking the various wars in Europe instead of securing our nation, I see no good happening. Winter is coming regardless, and the federal non-response to these disasters simply indicates that both Biden and Harris are not doing their jobs!

If we’re lucky enough to get President Trump back in, I suspect we just might have a negotiator that can handle the union boss. I don’t like thugs and thuggery, and I do believe that they need to be taken down with prejudice, using all necessary means. Unfortunately, a new president won’t be empowered before January 20th of next year. Regardless, the immediate consequences are likely to be serious shortages just in time for Christmas.

  4. “Port Strike”

Side with the workers and hit prices for the consumers. Make $AMZN Prime $139 a month and double Port through UPS wages while the gett’in is good for all supply chain workers – from ports to post box. These are the good times. We’ll eat bug breadings on Tofu to make it up.

    “conservative ideology,”

Just look at what’s happening in front of us. RINOs are better than Leftists but either way, the Haitians in Ohio are here to stay!

    • Kitfox
      “RINOs are better than leftists”
I’d have to disagree with you on this Steve, while leftists are clearly demented, they (unlike RINOs) don’t lie about what they’re going to do. Can’t say that about a RINO.

  5. Washington has ordered the deployment of between 2,000 and 3,000 additional soldiers to “protect” its troops already stationed in the region, as well as Israel., and has nearly doubled its fighter aircraft and personnel in the region.
There are already 40,000 troops in countries like Iraq, Syria (to support the Kurds), Bahrain, or Saudi Arabia, among others, and the White House will assess in the coming days if more are needed.
Additionally, the U.S. has two mobilized aircraft carrier battle groups. The USS Abraham Lincoln in the Gulf of Oman, which will extend its mission, And a second one, the USS Harry S. Truman, which left its base in Norfolk, Virginia, a week ago heading towards the Mediterranean. [ With how many oilers?]
Lebanon pulled back all of its ground forces as Israel enters a ‘Limited’ Ground Incursion. Israel has shown that they can enter Lebanon – at will.., but always has a hell of time getting back out.
Rumors are flying that Iran is ready to launch a ballistic missile barrage against Israel – immediately.

    • “Sending Troops, to “protect” our Troops.”

I’m trying to wrap my mind around that. Wouldn’t that just be, more Troops there?

      I’m so fkng naive

    • As of mid day today (Oct 1) the Truman was still two days out from Gibraltar.

With the additional aircraft we are putting into the theater and the PROMISES we are now making to protect Israel
NO MATTER WHAT IT DOES (tail wagging dog situation … when does the US get to make any decisions about if it goes to War anymore? ) it looks like the US is going to be involved in another Mid East War in the not too distant future.

GA Stewards interpretation that we lose a carrier in the Arabian Sea AND then another one in the Adriatic looks very possible. (he will say more that probable)

If we go to War against Iran do NOT expect it to just roll over like Iraq did … imo they will bring the battle to North America, to our home ground, a first for the US since the War of 1812. If their nuclear program is taken out look for them to launch attacks against US Nuclear Power Plants (imo of course). That would create a real mess.

In other news … Russia seized an important cross roads town today, one that was built as a fortress back in the cold war days, and Ukraine’s defenses appear to be cracking. Will the US /NATO actually enter that conflict too? AND Xi sits in the wings.

My … we do live in interesting times.

      • OK… this here boggles my mind.. SO… when I was little we use to toss fire crackers into the creek.. to see the big splash it made..
the predictions all talk about the Poseidon underwater explosion.. so .. if you have boats there and there is a tsunami wouldn’t that affect the boats as well… on either side of the tsunami ….

    • (“Israel has shown that they can enter Lebanon – at will.., but always has a hell of time getting back out.”)

Remember the security guard that decided to pick on the elderly.. See it was easy for that big bully to pick fights with elderly people.. picking on weaker people is easy to do.. now like Russia and China.. they are using restraint and trying to use diplomacy the weaker countries all are aligning themselves into one.. .. where the bullies see it as weakness not restraint and diplomacy the aligning small countries are now strong as one large force… like the bully that picked on you and others.. he didn’t realize he screwed up until after he got hurt.. going in has never been an issue.. getting out is…
Has all of this gone to far.. I think possibly…. is it beyond the tipping point.. well yes and maybe no.. I believe that we still could back away from the path of global destruction.. good lord knows that putin and xi are trying to keep this from happening.. but to back away from global destruction .. we will lose the position of king of the hill.. it would be and already is a multi polar planet and all the fiat currencies would lose value as the Bric’s become more powerful.. the puppeteers would lose the position they have held for thousands of years..

We would still have to go through the worst depression in the history of mankind.. and no one realizes just how serious this is.. cue in the song that all the networks are trying to sell us.. over all of this..

      https://youtu.be/X2acP06791I?si=nvsAeethO_8XCQVV

and congress won’t be back to tell anyone any of what is in that song until after the election.. LOL.. see they don’t see any of it either we can thank the bubble of the beltway for that one.. they had the mountain of evidence sitting on it.. and doing nothing.. to get votes and political alignment rather than doing the right thing…. on a situation that clearly could become a direct danger to themselves. if they did allow this administration to bring over and support a hidden army that if they did would put them and their families in the bullseye of the target..
Cue in the official song that should be the official song of the USA congress

      https://youtu.be/-gBpp4sJDbY?si=FZaQRzJAY0jgGbY6

all over what totally appears to be for a number on a sheet of paper some drugs and what ever other gifts or activities that the puppeteers want to give them.. that if everything was vaporized wouldn’t even be enough to wipe ones butt with..

  6. The games afoot. Iran shooting missiles and drones at the jews. How we gonna ship munitions to Israel with the ports closed? Pedo joe has a predicament here. Maybe he’ll hide in his basement til January 2025.

  7. Well.., damn !
Iran has launched a missile attack against Israel.
I believe that Israel will counter this time.., which begs the question…,
Will this counter-attack bring the U.S. into the fighting ?? .., and how hard will they counter.
    .
Just yesterday Biden committed to ‘not’ sending anymore troops the area.., that lasted a single day.

  8. Just spent the past couple of hours doing major resupply orders [cha-ching $$!] for essentials and some non-essentials, as well. [ How many bars of old fashioned Lava soap do you have?] Everything I wanted was in-stock., no discernible price difference. [ How long will that last?] No room left in the freezer – so went with freeze-dried on a few items. [ I did not know they made freeze-dried ‘turkey’ meatballs. Non-essential – just wanted them. Sauteed in my spicy homemade tomato sauce., sounds like a great one foot sub sandwich to me.]
You too., may want to look into laying-in a few extra supplies. It could get a little dicey between now and Jan 20th. ., and after that – very dicey.
    “Stay Frosty ! “

  9. Question: Will any NATO country aid the U.S. in its efforts to defend Israel ? We could really use a couple of resupply ‘oilers’. Come-on guys.., help us out here.
    [ I doubt it.]

    • re: castor oil

      dlynn,
I imagine any excess NATO capacity is steaming in the Black Sea.

I have stumbled over the US Navy website’s public page of its “17-strong” oilers roster. Here’s a link:

      https://www.msc.usff.navy.mil/Ships/Fleet-Oiler-PM1/

Three of the newest generation oilers are named –

1./ USNS John Lewis named after the Black civil rights activist (christened by Speaker Pelosi!).
      Ship is in service?

2./ USNS Harvey Milk named after the San Francisco gay rights activist.
      Ship is in non-commissioned service?

      3./ USNS Earl Warren
      Ship is under construction.

      • Nein, nein, nein – all 3 as explained earlier are AFU. Design and Construction was/is flawed, something about not being able to correctly or accurately turn the main screw (s).

“Haze Gray, Sitting in a Quay” = New Navy Way

..no worries “Capt. Furrby” cant even operate an M4 correctly, but he can command a ship and her crew.

    • I doubt it.. most other countries put their money towards their country and the citizens living there.. not war.. the USA and UK are the two that put more into war than the country and people.. but.. considering the cost of living difference in some countries.. russia and china are fast approaching our rate of expanding to war expenditures

  10. George,

If the dock strike were resolved (with publicized presidential
encouragement) by 11-12 October 2024, an explanation for the masses could cover both the interim crash and the 40-55 percent correction by the time of presidential election.
Time will tell, but daily, hourly, and 15 minute time unit quantum growth and decay fractal mathematical models from 5 August 2024 to near the end of the 11 October 24 trading day are observable and project-able.

In the asset-debt macroeconomic system the final marginal plurality of net buyers verses net sellers of equities as the best investment instrument occurred on 26/27 September 2024 just as it did on 3 September 1929. A final low is projected the first two weeks of October 2025.

  11. This 7.1 X-flare was the largest of this solar cycle. The Hawaii interisland noon net on 40 meters (NVIS) was completely blacked out here in the Pacific.

  12. Loob, before the production ended, I wanted to get a fire extinguisher to help the poor guy — because his hair was on fire.

Seriously, now, this thing is dated yesterday, and it claims
“… meanwhile back on Earth, the public is grappling with the psychological and emotional effects of the Pluto Neptune Collision. The event has captured the world’s imagination in a way that few scientific discoveries ever have. News of the Collision has dominated headlines and people everywhere are trying to make sense of what it means for the future…”

All this since yesterday? I failed to find any headlines mentioning it.

    Dick

    • Yes.. when I first seen that.. I thought dam that is big news.. when in the hell did this ever happen and no one talked about it .. so I went right to the telescopes historical photos..

      https://neowise.ipac.caltech.edu/news/

and nothing no one talking about anything no hints of concern it became clear that it was a faked story….
its a lot like the old photos that were published showing planets close to earth .. but the photos were from the poles.. where the atmosphere has the affect of a magnifying glass and the planets look bigger..Nothing at all on NASA web page and I love the guys at nasa..best government agency around IMHO.. and no conversations except that they do have a strange path.. thank god to.. I wonder just how many changes such a collision would be if that did ever did happen.. I believe that the joker that put that post up as a joke. with so much real oh shit scenarios happening for real why not just toss one more for the people to worry about..

  13. re: Shaping Operations
    feat: East Tennessee

    Folks,

Just in time for arguably the collapse of law and order governance in parts of Appalachia, the C-Span website is promoting an upcoming broadcast this Saturday – “Red Dead’s History – A Video Game, An Obsession, and America’s Violent Past”. Here is the C-Span link:

    https://www.c-span.org/video/?537662-2/

The program apparently discusses the book of the same name published on August 6th authored by the university academic Professor Tore Ollson. It seems that Prof. Ollson teaches his American history course by utilizing the video game set in the post Civil War violence of the West, Deep South, and Appalachia. The C-Span page is pretty thin on details, but one of the sponsors’ sites, Union Ave Books of Knoxville is more helpful. As an aside they are situated in the refurbished Daylight Building formerly home to the TVA. However the actual presentation that would have been recorded by C-Span took place on August 15th at the premises of the other sponsor, The East Tennessee Historical Society. According to Wikipedia, the Society dates to 1834 but went dormant during the Civil War. It was revived by Confederate veterans in 1883.

I suspect that this Saturday’s broadcast may not include discussion of the zombie plague afflicting the family of the game’s main character. I think this would require a separate game extension pack.
