ShopTalk Sunday: Greenhouse Temp Control 101

Reader Read-In Note: In all that “spare time I have” I began a website earlier this year based on Hour-A-Day-Gardening.”  That site got a warm reception, but as always, time for that project became limited, though it served a critical purpose in my life.  See, most gardens fail because people don’t begin by making a “routine first” and then filling in specific tasks later.

In the case of HAG, I did things the other way around.  Not only have we enjoyed some very good hydroponics as a result, but we’re also learning tons, oodles, and gobs about electroculture.  Which we will cover in a subsequent report.  But the key thing about our operation here?  It’s being done in our “music studio” (air conditioned space with an average summer temp of 76F.  While the greenhouse is of the knocked-togther “lean-to” sort cobbled up two or three years back when son George2 was down here for a while.

It has been a great greenhouse.  We have gotten lots of edibles out of it including good winter production thanks to a “Chineseum” diesel heater which kept the indoor temps around 55F minimum even when temps outside were dropping into the twenties.  That adventure was a ShopTalk column called the Greenhouse Chinese Diesel Heater Install.

That gives you enough of the backstory that moving this morning will make sense – sort of.

Foodening ? Gardening or Prepping

Before getting into greenhouse thermal control engineering (we’ll get there, keep Ure shirt on!) I should explain that a lot of “domain-thinking” around here has been focused on getting out of old-style silo thinking and more into domain-agile worlds.

The term “vertical market” in advertising sums up how “silo thinking” works.  You take a topic – gardening say – and then you focus solely and diligently on that one activity.  To the exclusion of all (ezxcept the most unavoidable, in Ure face) related topics.

Domain-thinking is learning to think in logical linkage land.

Wjhat you come to is that Foodening.com is not only a “web domain” but it’s also a great description of a humongous realm of human endeavor.  Weather forecasting, energy shipping and fertilizer production, science in labs for GM seeds, marketing, food storage, warehousing,a preservation, home housing for food (in the fridge), and even the cooking appliances.  In the end, one of the last Foodening processes ends with Charmin and a slightly “flushed” feeling.

Point is?  Foodening is the processing of food.  Gardening doesn’t process “gards.” Nor would be call it a purely “vegetative state.”  However, it’s not a crispy Daguet hot out of the oven.  We quickly see how supply chains, home gardens, and the grocery store are all subsets of food processing that involves a few healthy fats, proteins, and carbs, “sticking to the ribs” on the way by us.  Foodeners.

Eventually, I’d “write backwards” and offer a ShopTalk/Foodening/HourADay on greenhouses.  I like ’em, they do good work, and they take a lot of old-school, time-intensive bullshit labor out of the personal foodening process.  All green stars there. Thermal Issues of Greenhouses

Recent talk about fertilizer shortages, hantavirus run potential, and the screaming increases in food prices hinted at in Producer Prices this week, sharpened out focus into looking at what would need to be done to:

  • Increase summer yield.
  • Increase the fall garden yield.
  • Give more tomatoes around Christmas,
  • And be fruiting heavily by late winter into early spring.

Our greenhouse (version 1) was really good.  But, it fell a few notches shy of (cue Tony the Tiger here…) “Gurrreat!”

Too Much Heat, and Too Much Cold? Same Problem

That’s what the first pass at cooling down the summer heat here revealed.

Our greenhouse was getting up to 103F on hoet days and that was after putting in a new swamp cooler and a new 3,100 cfm exhaust fan.

When I laid out the initial build, the air intake was in the shade (north side of the house) and the exhaust was up high on the north end with a foot of elevation gain.  So we were working with – not against – solar temperature gradient flows.

But the more I got into it – and AI’s really useful for this kind of engineering work – the more it became clear that I had several problems that were stacking.

Old Paint Story

Long-time readers may remember the the first framing of the greenhouse was done with Penofin rose wood oil stain.  Elaine – artiste in residence fors 26 years of marriage so far – call out and shrieked.  “Orange???  It has to go!!

My second pass was flat black.  Had that nice PNW architectural vibe to it and in the winter we notice ed good heat gain from it.

But with AI’s help, we narrowed that down to one of the main summer problems. Againb, more research and a gallon of primer and exterior all-in-one paint and some toss-out brushes, and I was drinking around fro an hour before the heat came up to slap white semi-gloss on all sun-facing surfaces.

Even with just half the sun-facing flat black painted on Tuesday, it took the top 5-degrees off the afternoon broiler.  More as the week moved on and my “paint among the ‘maters” continued.

The next thing I found was that putting an assortment of “space blankets” (mylar prepper  crap we may never live long enough to use) really started to strut its reflectivity  as the semi-gloss sent photons instead of flipping them into a cooling problem.

And the research continued.

For example, as part of the electroculture research project, we identified that the grow lights – which have been rocking-out the green leaf growth – were also tossing back 250-watts of heat 16-hours a day.  Opps!

Which gives you gigantic radish greens, but as long as plants are in the “vegetative growth Nirvana state” they aren’t going to flower OR bulb.

With the additional white vertical structural members, the light is still very good – even with a 40 percent shade cover directly overhead because I can’t be applying BBQ sauce all day on the plants.  But it has knocked off 10-degrees.  And if you ever get into a position where foodening becomes part of surviving? That’s valuable knowledge to be accumulated now while Amazon is still delivering every day.

A couple of other ways to knock-down heat.  We have some 20-year old solar panels laying around, so I leaded two of those up against the sidewall (west) where afternoon sun was bcrutal and no plants were in play.

At the north end of the room, a leftover hunk of roofing tin got the sun off the tomato planters on the inside.  AI tells me as the root temps come down, the urge to set fruit will likely reignite.

This doesn’t mean we are done engineering. I still have a FLIR-type heat camera (home surveillance toolkit, right?).  But, I wanted to do this part of learning as a hands-on, ground-up in order not to rely on tech which may not be around.

Still, we huge fans of real greenhouse type high-low digital thermometers.

In addition to using a couple (one at canopy height and one at root level) we can see what is going on very nicely with plant comfort.

By the way, if you have a solar-power pantry building for food storage (You don’t???) keeping one in that space will give you daily assurance that you have cooling for food storage under control.  Canned goods tend to fall apart stored over 90F or under 30F for extended periods.

And excuse the appliance salesman pitch where I remind you that the cheap air conditioners which have mechanical switches (they come on automatically after power bumps) are only way to fly in that kind of space.

One other “sneaky Pete”?  (A reference to the TV show, not the SecDef.)  An on sale candy thermometer from Amazon is an easy way to check root ball temps.

Stage 2 Cooling Plans

Any ShopTalk project worth doing is worth over-doing. We will be doing Stage 2 Cooling.

This will consist of a seal airbox from outside into the swamp cooler.  A bit of 1/4″ plywood and clever j0ointery ought to do it.

On the outside west and north walls?  Planter height closed cell foam withy ply-over will add serious heat barrier (OK, 2 is still better than zero) and going with 5-foot high twinwall instead of single layer corrugated Lexan will also improve the heat transfer picture.

Less hurry with those aspects for now. The heat’s already on, though the airbox may come this week.

A?fter that?  My biggest realization about my own Foodening mindset was I tend to plant too early in the fall.  I aimed for late August – which is 2-3 weeks too early.  And I have not been on top of the winter-over garden.  In fact didn’t even run the diesel heating this winter.  Sometime, when you’re on a diet, having food delivered work and is a real joy.

But if good times don’t last forever, that’s why the hands-on skills matter now and will be something to pass on in the future.

          My understanding is that the First Triumvirate was not past the line to dictatorship. Pardon me rambling on because your line of inquiry brings up seeming parallels between the end of Rome’s First Triumvirate and the present time.

          Apparently Crassus, one of the Triumvirate leaders (and the wealthiest ever Roman?), decided to venture across desert terrain and invade Parthia (Iran) without Senate approval. He lost 7 legions at the Battle of Carrhae in 53 b.c. Crassus also is said to have perished when truce negotiations fell apart. Rome subsequently entered a period of civil war.

          Carrhae is situated around current day Harran, Turkey near the Syrian border on the Silk Road. Carrhae/Harran is said to originally derive from Akkadian meaning “crossroads”.

          Hopefully #47 has better luck than Crassus did with the current operation against Iran.

  3. Another fine report today George. I think many folks would benefit from an attached “sunspace” that could be in most cases a significant source of heating during the colder periods that has the ability to be shut off from the rest of the home during during heat times. Our new sunroom is not in place yet but we, or she rather, are already planning interior design and decoration. We have contracted the installation of a factory built sunroom with retractable sunscreening both inside and out with static ventilation rated to exchange the air inside 3 time per hour. All of this with manual override of course. While no major foodening will occur there other than maybe some table top hydro units the transition from the old mans lab space into it has been spec’d by my Queen to have a screened entryway similar to a sliding patio door that can be effectively shut off during cold periods. And it has been “requested” that those weird noises and scratchy sounds be kept down while we are enjoying the new sunspace. In the words of Steve Martin, “Well excuuuuuuuuuuuse me.”,
    All would be well advised to listen to warnings about food and fertilizer and as George is showing us to make food production a priority.

  4. I would say the following is armchair advice, except I’m using a kneeling chair these days.
    I’ve seen commercial greenhouses with exhaust fans out the side near the ridge.
    I would think a solar vent fan, ducted to a drilled duct suspended from the peak ridge would pull more evenly. The solar power would take grid down out of the picture. You would want a on-off switch at ground level for winter operation. Make up vents would be up front down low. You would want to be able to close them for cold weather.

        Then has an air exchanger on one end recirculation of the air.. think of it as a thermal envelope..The ancient Romans were doing geothermal HVAC two thousand years ago.. ancient technology — underground ducts for cooling, hypocausts for heating.
        It’s wild how ancient engineering solved problems we’re still trying to fix today.
        This is the earliest direct ancestor of Roman cooling systems originated by the Persians who invented Qanats or underground water channels that cooled air and stored vital water supplies.. aka cisterns..
        then there were Badgirs windcatchers of a sort that forced air into underground ducts that flower around the building recycling hot air to cool air …Then there are Earth?cooled rooms ( similar to what this greenhouse uses) that work exactly like modern geothermal tubes…
        These systems influenced Rome that used the same physics that Rome later used…cool earth + controlled airflow = passive climate control….
        air conditioning using the earth.. many of this came from China that used similar systems like hanging gardens with water flowing over the structure and ondol heating in cold climates..

    • 1. Make sure your NOK files are current.
      2. Dip Okra in an egg wash.
      3. Roll in your favorite cornmeal fish fry as long as it has lots of hot pepper spice.
      4. Deep fry in lard.
      5. Attach defib pads and enjoy with cold beer.

      Make sure you have plenty of Malox or MOM for later if needed.

    • Garbage Disposal or Trash Can are your best bets.

      Not quite as bad as Pea’s, Beets, Brussels Sprouts or Cauliflower, they bee second level up from the bottom.
      Dont waste your money or garden space.

      I got some Wild American Lettuce in garden that cooks up better(Stems) than celery, and tastes a whole hell of a lot better too. Had to buy starter plants this year, as 2 seasons of unsuccessful Seed germination forced my hand.

      They eat a lot of that okra in Belize, or at least I see tons of it at the Fruit and Vege stands.
      Are you living in a 3rd world shithole, as general bone spurs likes? to call em ?

  6. If you were serious about temperature control, you’d bury the greenhouses. If you didn’t want to bury them, you could bury thinwall tubing instead, and use passive convection (or solar fans) to move that year-around 50° air into your greenhouse space. Man has only been doing that for about 4800 years, so there ought to be some learnéd treatise somewhere, on how to do it.

    Were I you, once I got a topcoat on the greenhouse framing, I would follow up by sanding smooth, washing, rinsing, rinsing again, then topcoating with Rust-Oleum (NYBCO) “Appliance White” 1-part spray epoxy, because gloss white is better than semi or satin and reflects better, and there’s no white enamel that’s tougher or glossier than Appliance White. I’ve had it on an exterior doorframe for forty years. No chips, cracks, crazing, fading, and it’s still painfully bright & reflective, in direct sunlight…

    • I have forgotten more about paint products than most care to know. The Rust-Oleum Marine Coatings Topside Paint is probably a close cousin to appliance paint. I applied their topside material to the bows of my race boat over (5) years ago. Tough stuff survives ultraviolet and wears through weather.

    No, I don’t I have this thing called a “basement” which tends to stay at about 60°F year-around using only the heat/cold that radiates from the furnace return — and the fact it extends below my four foot frostline…

    • The prebviousd owners had the basement option ordered for our 1989 mobile home shell – but the crews couldn’t get it on the delivery rigs.

  8. Deep fat fried..Now I can hardly stomach okra unless its fixed like this..

    1 lb fresh okra, sliced into ½?inch rounds
    1 cup buttermilk (or milk or cream + 1 tbsp lemon juice)
    1 cup cornmeal flour or ½ cup all?purpose flour and cornmeal
    1 tsp salt ( or more )
    1 tsp black pepper
    1 tsp garlic powder 1 tsp
    paprika ½ tsp ( use more)
    cayenne (optional for heat) I don’t use
    Oil for deep frying

    Prep the okraSlice okra into ½?inch rounds and pat dry to remove surface moisture.
    2 soak place okra in a bowl and cover with buttermilk. Let sit 5–10 minutes to help the coating stick.
    3 Mix coating in a separate bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika, and cayenne. first dip the okra in dry flour mix then coat it..set aside coat again..
    4 coat lift okra from buttermilk, shake off excess, and toss in the dry mixture until every piece is well coated.( double coat)
    5 Heat oil Heat 1 – 2 inches of oil in a heavy pan to 350°F (175°C).
    6 FryFry okra in small batches 3–4 minutes until golden and crispy. Do not overcrowd the pan.
    7 DrainRemove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Sprinkle with a pinch of salt while hot.
    8 Serve and Enjoy immediately as a snack or side — they are crispy, flavorful, and addictive and home made ranch dip..

    • You must have a very understanding and forgiving Spouse, Loob.

      I is banned from using a deep fat fryer in the Belize house. Son and myself had big Fish Fry downstairs in the bar/mini kitchen area, that leads directly out to Pool/Studio/Dock-Boathouse. We cooked up dozens of fresh fish filets, mostly Snapper & Grouper, and French Fry’s. Oil got all over everything in that area..floors,walls.
      Better half had a conniption fit, could have been worse if my Son wasnt involved, as it was she was pretty pissed off.

      I occasionally will fry up small items in Wrought Iron Skillet, with grease screen, when she is not in the vicinity. Generally though I have to go out for Fried Food, which nowadays consists primarily if Fried Chicken(Hello Chick fil-et ) Popeyes when Im feeling it or ACME for the Monday Chicken Special.

      Yes I have serious weakness for Fried Chicken – but is reaffirmation that the creators loved Me so much, they made it so Chickens are not only delicious, but they cant FLY!

      I have heard/read the blather of conspironuts during every single Administration since GHW Bush, posit ways, means, and rationales for the current President and Administration to shelve or cancel an election and remain in power. I will explain one more time: Unlike every other nation not patterned on ours, the President’s term is limited by the Constitution and ends at noon on January 20th following Election Day, whether an election takes place, or not.       Mr. (not “professor”) Jiang is not a “seer.” He is a prognosticator who uses a computer and “game theory” and gaming algos to form and foment his predictions. He either doesn’t know or doesn’t care that Donald Trump is not a politician, and therefore the ruleset he has established for “politicians” does not, and can not apply. He also has no concept of U.S. law or our Constitution.

      GIGO applies to his data and algorithms just like it does to AI or any other computer input. If the data isn’t clean, honest, and as good as possible, the output is worthless. Jiang bases his data regarding U.S. law and policy on the inane (insane?) ramblings of All Out Crazy. Would you?
