ShopTalk Sunday: Friction & AI Use in the Shop

Reader Note: This will be my last planned ShopTalk Sunday, as more content will be shifting over to the Peoplenomics.com side of the house. Next month, one regular UrbanSurvival publishing day will disappear into the fog of history. Over time, more of my serious work will migrate to the Peoplenomics side of the house.  Today we begin a transition, but this is not an eviction notice.

Time, money, and profile management are all involved in this decision. On the time side, I want to spend more time on real projects around the ranch.

I have finite hours, Urban consumes too many of them, and I intend to redirect those hours toward Elaine, the ranch, deeper Peoplenomics reports, books, and physical projects.

Shop Purpose: Friction Reduction

Remember the old motivational saying?  “WIIFM” – which means “What’s In It For Me.” Most people don’t “audit their lives” well.  Which is to say they eat what’s “easy” and they think “inside the box” and in the end, head to a couch, veg out, and die.  That’s a majority of humans.

The rest are people like you and me: Walking around with enough separation of powers between the ears to have a full-time Auditor on staff.  “Why did you do that?”  Or, “God, that was stupid, don’t ever do THAT again…”

If you are totally satisfied with your life, a discussion of friction reduction (and learning more about yourself) is probably pointless.  You will forever live at the pinnacle of your success, regardless of what MIGHT be improved on closer inspection. Great teachers, military organizations, craftsmen, and successful businesses have all practiced some form of useful dissatisfaction: examine what went wrong, admit it, and improve the system. I need more time to keep my dissatisfaction in check.

I awaken every day knowing there are multiple lists of things in my life I plan to change. There is a physical list (diet, exercise, weight, mitochondrial optimizing, and more). Next to it is the columns and writing projects which must get done. The husbanding list involves making Elaine’s life great, helping her with memory while she helps me with eyesight (I think of it as Compensating Partners, LLC.)

Then we have the Dream Lists.  The home food raising, the ham radio museum project, opening a bulldozer school, and a lifetime study of Personal Routine.

It’s this last one I want to pay some attention to. One of the simplest (most direct) routes to a better life is to live by a “Routine.”  Up at a certain time every day; plus or minus “brain on fire” moments. And your Daily Path.  Mine, from leaving the (grounded) pillow, goes to the bathroom, then the kitchen for coffee, and the morning anti-aging stack.

Reinforced with hot coffee, a red light therapy device is used for a few moments on my eyes, and the best two out of three blood pressure measurements are noted. From there, I pass through the music studio/hydroponic hatchery, where the plants are checked. Then it’s down a few stairs into the Grow Room I’ve told you about.  Overnight lows and previous day’s high temps are noted and – in season – the evap chillers and exhaust fans given the once-over.

Along the way, Shop Practice has cleared the way. “Alexa, turn on Grow.” Lights up the lean-to greenhouse.  “Alexa, turn on power wall.” Which lights up the renewable energy center.  Which – because the shop is enclosed in corrugated Lexan, means the walking path from greenhouse to Shop/Office is clearly illuminated.  Walking past the utility pole box and the generator shed, I hoist a coffee cup to one of the PTZ surveillance cams.  Son G2 is our back-up security;  motion events trigger cell-phone alerts.

I could bore you with the gory details of my daily routine – the weights I stop at, the time on the vibration board, or the spritz of essential oil spray around the office – but the point comes down to this:  I have made it a conscious practice to look for friction in my life and deal with it as effectively as possible.

I offload problems to people who can fix them (food delivery services, two lawyers, building material deliveries, Medicare Advantage plan, and so forth) while keeping a few around (like the Selectric Mystery) because they are easy to write about and reveal themselves as being “everyman problems.”

So, if there is a long-term view of your Shop, start with your “friction list” and line out what really pisses you off.  Then craft solutions out of your head and get them on paper.  From that you can then acquire tools and materials to build it (whatever “it” is) and enjoy the lower-stress life that follows.

Other people will line up all day long to judge you, no doubt.  25 years ago, when we moved off my sailboat and eventually moved to the deep woods, no shortage of people said, “Who could believe ANYTHING from a guy who lives in a double-wide in the woods, for God’s sake?”

Yet here we are: decades into a debt-free life, six figures liquid, a shop containing nearly every tool worth owning, contingency plans for most foreseeable disasters, and—most important—excellent health, as far as health can be managed.

I commend this approach to you. When you have a deep appreciation for (Universe, God, the Ontology, or whatever you call it), it’s perfectly OK to ignore the labels of people who are still groveling at the feet of the Debt Monster acting as financial marionettes.  You want nothing to do with debt. Period.

Friction reduction does not always mean buying another machine. Increasingly, it means learning how to use AI as another shop tool—without letting it talk you into building a twelve-inch door on a six-inch building.  Which needs explaining. PPE on? Let’s do this.

AI Use in the Home Shop

We were going to feature the Hermes Lite 2 ham radio build and setup as our last column – for now. But a chance question from a reader offered a broader topic that will stand up over time.

Let’s begin with the backstory.  A reader emailed me this week asking my comments on a new chicken house he had designed.  I won’t use his name but it was “egg-like” although nowhere near as ornate as this:

Chickens are not to scale and (I awoke with a sweat at 1 AM the next morning) his version didn’t have an entryway rain porch. But here’s the point:  It was a fun idea (still is, too). But that triggered the Industrial Artist in me to design a short course in Shop Use of AI.

Shop AI: Basic, Simple

Obviously, one way to approach this idea would be to say “Grok, give me a sketch of an egg-shaped chicken house.”  That’s all it took plus the command “as a pen and ink drawing” to keep things generic.

From here, it was only a few commands to reach a watercolor rendition with bigger chickens.

And finally, I tell AI to “Double the size of the chickens – they are still too small – and make it all photo-real with some grass to approximate scale.”  A few seconds later and Grok hands me this:

The Real-Life Shop Problem

All looks like a fun build.  But now we need to tell AI to, “using this drawing, turn it into a buildable plan.”

After a few minutes of thinking (“Researching egg-shaped chicken coop construction…”) which dragged out more than five minutes (an eternity in AI) it delivered the plan.

Egg_Shaped_Chicken_House_Buildable_Plans

Before you run out and start buying materials for the build, let’s hold up a minute and review what AI delivered.  Consider this part of the drawing in particular:

Grok seems to have a ways to go on converting shop ideas into something that’s actually buildable.  When you open the PDF you will find lots of “small errors” – like the top of the drawing says the whole thing is 5″ wide.  At the bottom (with no tilting) it’s 6″ wide.

I then spent a while trying to figure out the physics of how a 12″ wide door fits on a 4 (or 6) inch wide building.

And now we are to the point.

Understanding Engineering Constraints

AI doesn’t.  At least not well and yet.

Sure, sure we could pick at the goof-up on measurements and units. It might require lighting up to understand what you are looking at: an AI view of an internal domain.  One where parallel lines are not equidistant.

Then you can spend a good hour (or two) trying with your mind’s eye, to figure out where AI would have had to be standing in order to achieve the perspective above.

Even more fun was the “build it in air” page of internal details.

And this is where engineering begins to matter.  Pappy taught me 90 percent of good engineering with a single phrase.  “Build something like it doesn’t need fasteners.”

Applied to home construction, this requires that the ceiling sheetrock goes on before the sidewalls are rocked.  Because then – by the no fasteners rule – the edges of the ceiling are held in place by the sidewall rock butted up against it.

Was it in Mind Amplifiers (?) I explained that “we are the parents of AI” and so we need to take time to give explicit tasking instructions.

“I need a constraint table list for all engineering of wood and metal doors commonly used in residential construction.”

This is the kind of task that AI does super well.

ShopTalk Sunday – Door Constraints

Whoa baby!

Here’s the larger point: anything you can wrap a constraint table around becomes a discrete domain. Define the constraints and you define the domain.

That’s where workable solutions begin—whether you’re designing a chicken coop, training an AI, studying cognition, or fooling around with long-wave economics and minimum service life. But back to the chickens.

Real-World Chickens

As luck would have it, our reader asked the wrong fellow about Chicken housing design. Because I have done it before and quite successfully, though on a somewhat larger scale.

The lesson here is whenever you are working with AI – and you get even a baby-step past just spit-balling and blue-skying, then you need to write down your constraint tables.

As a serial chicken owner, before I made my first chicken housing more than two decades back, I programmed myself to handle the design constraints.  This is the magical part of taking a “cute idea” and turning it into an actual deliverable.  Your commands might go something like this:

[Use constraint table “Basic Engineering”]
[Use constraint table “Home Shop materials”]
[Use constraint table “Cost per animal of construction”]
[Use constraint table “Minimum service life and recycling”]

Additionally incorporate the following as [“Chicken coop constraints”].

  • Design should allow one surface to be outside of the fenced chicken run or chicken moat boundary
  • Bottom of any chicken structure should be 1/4 inch galvanized hardware cloth to allow poop to drop to ground
  • Coop (hardware cloth floor) should be 24 inches or higher from grade
  • Ramp to chicken door should not exceed a 20 degree rise angle
  • There should be a full length rear (outside of pen) Lexan or glass viewing port to allow inspection of animals
  • Provide for common 12-Volt linear actuator and remote to secure chickens inside at night.
  • Provide PTZ camera mount with night vision for predator checking
  • Construct using 3/4-inch CDX plywood, standard dimensional lumber, and a metal-overlaid roof
  • Specify ground-contact-rated material for all 4×4 and 2×4 lumber below coop-floor level.
  • … (Add more dream features like a water hydrant nearby for easiest washdowns…)

And that’s the takeaway from this (maybe last for a while) edition of ShopTalk.

The future is bright and we Makers have never had it better.

But with complexity comes…complexity.

On that? “Alexa, turn off vacuum. Alexa, turn off bench.” Don’t wander off too far, though. Son G2 wants to take up the ShopTalk mantle—and retool this part of Urban around his interests, which will mean more video. I’ll keep you posted. Just waiting for him to punch in for hisa shift.

  1. ” I intend to redirect those hours toward Elaine, the ranch, deeper Peoplenomics reports, books, and physical projects.”

great plan. my Dad died on Thursday – the same date as my Mum passed last year – they really were a bonded pair, in love and life. my own world feels totally directionless so I feel drawn to establish a routine, something that has sadly been missing for 20 years after being taken down by CFS.

for a while I’ve been curious about vibration boards, but wary just the same. can you recommend one which won’t disassemble this tired, worn body?

    • I got a vibration board on eBay without much forethought. First time I got on it I realized my mistake and got off within five seconds. The thing is a very hefty, violent impact vibration. Exactly the kind of thing I should NOT have after having bone implants for my hip replacement. I’m prohibited from trampolines, also. It would surely crack my titanium hip from the bone.
So the vibration platform sits at the foot of my bed, unused for now. I think I will try it with my arms on it while holding a ‘pushup’ position so there is no vibrational weight on the hip joint… just upper body vibration. We shall see what that does to my neck arthritis.

  2. Thanks for the shop talk series George. It has been a good ride. Best of Luck to you on all of your endeavors. Diana and I are following a similar path and couldn’t be happier. if G2 decides to take the reins I Look forward to it.

I’ve been trying to put some more time into Ham radio lately so maybe we will meet on the air someday.
    Stay safe. 73

  3. Just say NO , to the Friction… C60 works wonders on friction dont cha know. Speaking of friction and joint & bone health, Dr Yoho just published a very informative paper on Boron/Borax coverup.
Yerp! at this point youse should all recognize the evil mechanizations going in the background.
“They” REALLY dont like US and would rather see Humanity suffering, as we DIE slow painful deaths.

Who is “They” ? exactly – well they populate the WHO/BIS/CFR/Buildaburger and other such Light crushing institutions like the WEF.

This is an FYI paper for Bone&Joint health, all about Boron/BORAX.
    Enjoy -https://substack.com/app-link/post?publication_id=690651&post_id=207612555&utm_source=post-email-title&utm_campaign=email-post-title&isFreemail=true&r=1kk4yd&token=eyJ1c2VyX2lkIjo5NDk5ODAzNywicG9zdF9pZCI6MjA3NjEyNTU1LCJpYXQiOjE3ODUwMzA1ODYsImV4cCI6MTc4NzYyMjU4NiwiaXNzIjoicHViLTY5MDY1MSIsInN1YiI6InBvc3QtcmVhY3Rpb24ifQ.DRdL4wEf08v-y10ZYKYGcIhB6aWKiNVuVn62M4HGhdY

  4. Your hardware cloth floor is certainly worth consideration for my next build (yeah, right), but I have a couple of improvements you might want to consider. On my chicken “tractor”, I added a 48 qt. ice chest on an elevated shelf outside on one side of the door. That’s connected with PEX tubing from the ice chest’s drain fitting through the wall to a 4′ piece of 1/2″ CPVC pipe with 6 “chicken nipples”. That gives them a constant supply of clean water.

On the other side of the door there’s a drop-down door supported by two small chains, allowing me to slide the feeder (a 25 lbs dog feeder) out to fill conveniently from the outside.

Yay!! George gets off his computer and gets a life!! (Well, at least for another 1 hr per day lol??) Who needs to hear the smug bragging (I’m so rich, I’ve got this and I’ve got that) ad infinitum everyday…

How do you reach in to grab the eggs in that new fangled coop? It needs more ventilation too…

Much prefer hearing about more E (Elaine) time, than all the auto robotic downloads you can find …

    • “Who needs to hear the smug bragging (I’m so rich, I’ve got this and I’ve got that) ad infinitum everyday…”

You do, apparently, so you have something to troll about. Why do you stay?
I consider myself lucky that George shares his ‘richness’ with me. It enriches us all… except for a certain malcontent.

      • ‘Well, here we are, 6 figures liquid’….did you miss that smug brag??

George, yourself and others do provide a lot of insightful content, that’s why I stay.

        • & you’re not as clever as you think. Six figures includes two to the right of the decimal – you apparently missed that long ago long standing joke…You have a Calif/Austin/NYC mindset that is amazing to play with as a wind-up toy. True mental flexibility comes from moving tour POV around to get alt. perspectives. In optics, assuming one light source creates shadows. In multi-source or diffusion, shadows disappear and the whole texture becomes clear. six figures does not place the decimal. That’s what you bring to the party -a bias to the common – and then ou judge quickly and harshly. Tisk, Tisk.
You may have missed that when we die/end/exit we will each have to resolve this point-source dilemma. With only one origin your conclusions are locked. With a belief in duality, the picture softens and widens. With three, or more) light sources illumination becauses its own paintd brush. Have you never studied lighting in photography? It is revealing in a soft (hair light?) way. Allow me?
A hair light (also called a hair light, rim light on hair, or backlight for hair) is a specialized light source in portrait photography placed behind and usually above the subject to illuminate the hair.
          Its main purposes are:

Creating separation between the subject’s hair and the background so the head doesn’t blend in.
Adding highlights, shine, or a glowing rim along the edges of the hair for a more three-dimensional, polished look.
Enhancing texture and volume in the hair (especially useful for darker hair or darker backgrounds).

          Typical placement and setup

Positioned behind the subject, slightly above head height, and angled down toward the hair.
Often offset to one side rather than directly behind so it doesn’t spill too much onto the face or create lens flare.
Controlled carefully with flags, barn doors, grids, or a snoot so light falls mainly on the hair and not the face or background.

It is almost always used as part of a multi-light setup (key light + fill + hair light, sometimes plus a background light). Intensity is usually kept lower than the key light so it remains a accent rather than overpowering the portrait.
In short: the hair light is the backlight that makes hair “pop” and separates the subject cleanly from the background.
And so, in using our minds, we select which worldview we will reside in – literally from moment to moment. Habitually, I am in the 3 (and more) lighting of the outer world (and inner, but that takes longer to explain). Things will only “pop” one way – with one light.
Here – have a coupon for more decimals – but they’re in high demand. Bitcoins and Dow painters and all.

  6. I will miss the regular content, but I understand your priorities. G2 picking up the Shop Talk mantle sounds great.
My own span of activities has also shrunk as my increasing physical limitations have forced choices to focus on what’s most important & drop lower priority tasks.
Thanks for all you’ve given all these years, & I appreciate anything you chose to post in the future.

  7. Egg shaped chicken house!!!
A few years ago when my grandson was three.he came to me and was worried about the rabbit that lived in the wood pile..starving in winter.. I told him..well give him a carrot.. so every day he and I would take out a carrot..took a tote and cut a door in it and put straw in it..see jack the bunny can stay warm and have a juicy carrot..he did this every day..the rabbit never did use the tote but it was there..
pretty sure jack the bunny..( later we realized jack was a jackie..) would come to eat the carrot..eventually Jackie would come running to him when he would yell out I have a juicy carrot for you..they became friend that dam rabbit would come up to the door even..the dogs never bothered it either..in the spring she had babies.. one of the prettiest rabbit babies was princess..she got hurt by some critter and the son knows nursed it back to health..
when my mini me was learning to ride bike..he fell off..that dam rabbit ran away..then came back to make sure he wasn’t hurt..making a short story long ..we were afraid that Jackie was becoming to tame …so I got a chicken coop..egg shaped because a dome shape is stronger then a square one..
even with that the little house at the back was the weak spot and dogs from down the street killed snowball and tiny two of the babies..
fairest thing I ever seen a three year old hand feeding a rabbit..we had at peak sixteen rabbits…. boo the baby that would play peek a boo was killed last year..my two grand kids nursed her babies till they could be released….below is one like the one we had..got it at tractor supply..princess finally died from a stroke in january..she was so tame she wouldn’t have ever survived in the wild..the only one that we kept..

  8. america is running out of a lot of things . missiles , common sense , honesty and most important , money $$$. cmon FEDerali wake up to yourselves .

    • Thats the plan mr fromunda.

tRump was put in place to Bankrupt the System and bridge over to new Digital Asset Basket(prior experience). That “basket” is the what for in regards to his orangeness and Greenland & Venz. (Nat Resources backingstopping DAB).

Everything was going along nicely..until it wasnt, bottlenecks..

Then 2020 WAS STOLEN via Smartmatic tech/machines.

Who owns tech patents behind Smartmatic – Venezuelan elite/families- organizations like the del Sol guys.
This Was/IS used for Flipping Elections via a touchscreen enabled device and the ole SWITCHEROO of SIM chips for each machine. SIM chips predated/programed prior to the Switcheroo.
See Mad Nic – he is now a “Chip” in a very high stakes game still in play.

      The Ole Switcheroo – https://youtu.be/syZG1yPBpm8?

2024 – were baaaaaaaack. And so project “bankrupt America” is back on…BUT there is a slight hiccup – F-ing geniuses are Still not ready to SWITCH Over to Digital everything and finally kill the beast from jekyl island.

Hidden piece I did not have a handle on for the longest time – RH Negative Blood. I is one, and I am Adopted Child – O-Neg.
Was informed every single President has been descendant of an Elites’ side squeezing/dalliances – ya know Boinking the Help/Staff. That smelly smell that smells smelly, I couldnt quite put my finger on was warned about by great grandfathers on both sides of families – both gave up being members after reaching the top. It had become something else other than Being In Service to the Source.. Still have ALL the regalia, watch fobs, Fez, robs, pins..all backed in 22k.

It is my humble opinion that we are once again facing the single greatest WEATH creation opportunity in our current Lifetimes.

Not/Never Advice – BUT I would seriously consider acquiring One Single Bitcoin for each member of your immediate Family. Sure opportunities will abound in cryptos like ONDO and CANTON, – needs to do Ure RESEARCH – like where/how is DTCC going digitize all those TRILLIONZ of dollars in Assets ? That might be good place to start snooping around…or not.

      * Leave the Dingo’s alone – dont they have fines for that kinda deviant behavior ?

  9. George… congrats, but will miss the easy words without having to pass the gate. Can continue that still so mo happy.
Yesterday was great. Multiple birthdays, put with the tide and into light shifting downwind to the bay just inside the pass/bar where we drifted in the bewteens and played music on the foredeck. We were the oldies, the rest were middies.
Then the water got darker on the surface, a new breeze from the opposite side came up and we were easily making good back home with the now flooding tide. Dream sailing in a so fine place. Sailed her right up past the yacht club, Sunday band playing, and dropped the sail, easing back up the river and perfectly into the slip for sunset. A wowzer day as they would say down under.
Gotta get retired before you get too tired.

  10. About a question D long asked a few days ago ,
If I were looking for an Internal Combustion car I would take
a serious look at a Kia Niro Hybrid . I would be looking for one a
few years old. The brand new cars of all types are LOADED with
driver surveillance systems and auto shut off tech. I don’t need my
    car watching and judging me.
On another note , I have been driving an EV ( Nissan Leaf ) now for
about 2 and a half years and I think that it is the most reliable and lowest
maintenance car that I have ever owned. NEVER in the shop even once.
    I love that.

  11. Well it finally happened. USPS must read us. Package from Florida made it to the SanFran black hole, and then bounced backwards to RENO! First time that happened. Wonder what kind of tour this will take. It’s a pair of SPF50 long sleeve fishing shirts for tropical sun protection.

      • Hey! Smell your own shirt! You are the one that turned me on to these for working outdoors in the sun. I suffer the psoriasis (germanic) gene also and sun exposure ravages my skin, too. I have several of these shirts already, thank you, so these are just spares. I can afford to wait and watch the circus unfold.

  12. Next door neighbor died today. 90 years old retired Air Force. Shit. Good man. He and Jeannie outlived their two daughters. 120 acres plus will come up for sale, don’t have the energy left at 67 and Tina is 70 to bid on it. It will fetch 6 or 7 figure money for sure. Hell, our kids aren’t interested in our land. Probably sell to some round headed Yankee. Virgil and I tipped a many Bourbons in our time, I think I will make another and toast my good friend Virgil.

    • Sorry to hear of the loss – good neighbors are hard to find – we just got damn lucky. Your land price estimate scored a raised eyebrow. Around here (Elmwood/Montalba, TX) the going prices are still relatively low. Good-sized tracts are going in the $10,000 and under range. Which is honestly amazing. A savvy youngster (with reasonable net worth) could pick up the parcel, do a three-way split and have it all paid-off in no time – or at least be at the table picking neighbors… Still the hardcore reality is that unless you can handle the cost of redundant starlinks or fiber shows up, it’s hard to work and cash flow it – I don’t think slickers are totally ignorant of how coo0l life beyond “normaly is – I just don’t think they have inflation-adjusted their dreams.
Everyone hoist a glass tonight to Virgil…

  13. The decision to hold on to land or let it go has been complicated by apartment dwelling leftist regulators playing expert in this or that. The state of Texas no longer allows burn piles to process fallen limbs and dead trees. My burn pile is now a wood mulch pile, and after dealing with multiple tornadoes, it has gotten too large. Dealing with fallen limbs and trees has become a nightmare on partially wooded acreage. The timber farms let the subs deal with it at cutting time. For a small hay or row-crop farm with some native timber, the costs of disposal are too high. Between that, and constant attempts by the State to condemn and seize land, land ownership is becoming a burden for small farm owners with civilization creeping in. The only agricultural land to buy is completely denuded, with aggressive yearly application of Remedy required. This is not the agricultural environment my ancestors sweated and bled for, and in some cases, died protecting. Texas is the newest left coast. And with the elimination of controlled burns, and the influx of leftists and their firebug buddies, the raging arson fires are coming, if not this year, certainly in ten.

      • I looked again. I’m seeing burning rules different from what I was seeing a few years back. There are still restrictions on commercial burning, but burning by individuals on their own property appears to be back to being OK. One of my neighbors was burning a small pile earlier this year. First time I had seen anyone burn in several years. Still not seeing any burning on new developments. Should have reread the regs. My bad.

        • We like to have a brush fire truck and 1,000 gallons in tanks when we light ours off. Small donation to thye vfd and mracles can be burn ed in minutes. Start with an open gasoline core (1 gal) and a goods 10 ft wick of paper soaked in diesel set upwind. Patience. Minutes later/ Pile gone and in 45 minutes Dutch oven ready? Best done with 1-2 inches of (auxiliary rain) in the forecast

    • I gots burn regs here, too.

They do not apply to campfires and weenie roasts.
There is no set dimension on how high or broad a weenie roast fire can be.
I have a weenie roast several times a year — never trot out the hot dogs unless the local law rears its head.

Remember the scene from the original “Walking Tall” and read the regs. Put that judge in the basement crapper. There’s almost certainly a way to use the Law in your favor…
