Two financial stories to cover first. International Trade is interesting – because on the one hand, we think consumers may dial things back a bit – on rising actual prices – the dollars should be going up because if I am not mistaken, the tariffs are included in the dollar figures?

The international trade deficit was $103.6 billion in July, up $18.7 billion from $84.9 billion in June. Exports of goods for July were $178.0 billion, $0.1 billion less than June exports. Imports of goods for July were $281.5 billion, $18.6 billion more than June imports.
Advance Wholesale Inventories
Wholesale inventories for July, adjusted for seasonal variations and trading day differences, but not for price changes, were estimated at an end-of-month level of $908.4 billion, up 0.2 percent (±0.4 percent)* from June 2025, and were up 1.3 percent (±0.7 percent) from July 2024. The May 2025 to June 2025 percentage change was unrevised from the preliminary estimate of up 0.1 percent (±0.2 percent)*.
(Market didn’t exactly love that – some of this may be tariff impacts? But who’s saying how much?)

Personal income increased $112.3 billion (0.4 percent at a monthly rate) in July, according to estimates released today by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. Disposable personal income (DPI)—personal income less personal current taxes—increased $93.9 billion (0.4 percent) and personal consumption expenditures (PCE) increased $108.9 billion (0.5 percent). Personal outlays—the sum of PCE, personal interest payments, and personal current transfer payments—increased $110.9 billion in July. Personal saving was $985.6 billion in July and the personal saving rate—personal saving as a percentage of disposable personal income—was 4.4 percent.

Around the Ranch: Holiday Planning Tips
Tghree day weekends are the “holy ground” on calendars around here. A few things to keep in mind today.
- Plan on Quality: If you amble into a holiday without figuring out a “plan” in advance, your results will likely reflect the lack of plans. To have a really great long weekend, make a plan, figure some worthwhile goals and outcomes, and then act in accordance with the plan. Oh, yeah, shoudl mention the spousal unit has equal voice – time is of roughly the same value to all people and three day’s worth is a chunk.
- Supply Chain Fill: This works out at all different levels. For example, Elaine collected the bathroom trash last night and this morning I refilled low supplies (in 2) of he garbage liner plastics. At the other end (er, so to speak…) the Food stocks were topped off Thursday with final supplies coming later today.
- Splurge Plans Count! Yeah, only during the holiday do I give-in to the sweet tooth. On the last quickie supply run (gas for the mower, again, rain has been a blessing and a curse) there might be some Tastee-Kakes and maybe a sixpack of Klonidike frozen ice cream bars.
- Drink Responsibly: Yesh, when we were younger, things like a half gallon of (whatever) could disappear over a three-day weekend. But now? A single glass of wine. And – THIS IS KEY – NEVER EVER DRINK AND DRIVE. Back in our sailing days, the skipper’s rule was “No drinks until the boat is secured for the night…: Either hook’s down and set, including the anchor alarm and radar guard zone. OR, you’ve tied up (and the holding tank doesn’t need a visit to the pluymbing dock…), Just keep in mind that living like a grown-up is how you get to be one…
- Pre-Pan Tuesday: When the weekend is over, is there a load of wash that needs to be run? Got detergent abnd bleach and whatever else you need for early next week? We like to have the meals blocked out, too.
- Pre Your Food! We typicallty will get one of our spiral-cut honey-baked hams for a holiday weekend. Great for breakfasts and sandwiches on the fly. Last night, I put on the ‘butcher hat” (gotta have the right hat for every job…) and I pre-cut the ham into ZipLoc bags. One bag is slices, one bag is chunks, and one is a mix. Doing it this way, you get the convenience of a deli pack at a price per pound that’s about half if you could buy it. The deli ham is never as good as the spriacl cut, so that kind of think matters. Weekends are a gooid time to get some frozen bread dough. Nothing smells better (to me) than a fresh loaf o bread coming out about the same time the primne rib comes ouet of the roaster to ‘rest.’
I know you know all this stuff. Our demographics are a little on the high side compared to the kiddie sites. But here’s the thing: 15-minutes in planning or prep today – maybe a pop-in grocery speed run, too – will pay a bedtter return on time invested than almost anytjhign else when comes to quality of the weekend.

I use to read the books over and over taking in the whole thing and wondering.. what the hell is this..then while reading a book of Adam and gods talk with him after Adam tried to gain entrance back into the garden by sacrificing himself..After being cast out of Eden, Adam is overwhelmed with sorrow and guilt. He throws himself down from a high mountain multiple times, hoping to die, but each time God restores him. Eve, too, shares in this anguish. now i wont get into lillith and her desire to be on top or dominant in spirit..my thought is come here my little cowgirl..What’s striking is not just Adam’s despair, but God’s response….rather than condemning him, God gently restores him and speaks words of comfort. In one passage, God tells Adam that He does not desire his death, but his survival, growth, and eventual redemption. You are correct, when windows first came out it was an overlay to DOS. They changed to the NX kernel at about Windows 7 if I recall right. Before that you could type in DOS commands to move around in Windows quickly.
Al (Big) : a Guidance Office dragon lady desk attendant, clerk, secretary in my son’s HS (2010-ish?) was beside herself one day, nearly having a Tourettes outbreak because she had a document and was unable to print. Uhm, try CTR-P yet? Huh? Try it. Out comes what she needed and, the following 2-3 years went great for my son and me.
My goal this weekend is to clear out the garage and clean up the dead bugs. My daughter switched from classroom to virtual about 6 years ago and she piled stuff in boxes and fabric bags in the garage. The spiders made homes in the open bags. A windows broke that I didn’t know about and soaked the bags. Definitely time to clear them out.
The pool shock reacted to the moisture and corroded all the metal tools. the shelving, and bucket handles. Nasty stuff. They are going too. I’ll probably toss stuff I’m no longer using and try to have my daughter take her bins and wooden shelves to work. It’s raining so it should be a cool day to do this.
A friend is claiming some rusty tools and her husband is being offered to empty my 2 water barrels in there…so no old water diseases for me. Thanks for the tip George.
If we could only eat dead spiders and flies my stomach would be always full.
I’m adding oranges and apples to my carnivore diet this week for those that are interested, and I ordered some potato chips cooked in tallow from Amazon. I love Klondike bars…not too sweet… but they make me hungry for more carbs. Still, I eat them occasionally.

It takes some getting used to. It took a couple of bags before I decided I liked them. I just opened a new bag and it is much saltier than the previous 10 bags. I like salty so it’s OK.
1 large starchy potato, boiled and mashed
2 tbsp water
1/4 stick of butter melted
1 cup rice flour
½ cup cornstarch
1 tsp salt (plus more for seasoning) ( onion powder or garlic powder to taste)
Oil for frying
Optional: ¼ tsp citric acid for that tangy finish
Boil and mash the potato until smooth. Blend with water to form a silky paste.
In a bowl, mix mashed potato with rice flour, cornstarch, and salt. Knead into a tight dough.
Divide dough into balls, roll out thinly, and prick with a fork to prevent puffing.
Cut into circles using a cookie cutter or glass rim.
Deep fry in hot oil for 10–15 seconds per side, then rest and refry for crispness.
Sprinkle with salt and citric acid or your favorite seasoning blend.
now …walmart sells a small personal deep fryer.. for ten bucks I believe..roll out the dough and even cut it with the kids favorite cookie cutters…for ripple chips roll the dough to about two inches round..

Eleanor, for your friend taking your rusty tools – there are many videos on youtube on using electrolysis to remove the rust. If the tool will fit in a bucket or pan and you have a dumb battery charger(or even a smart one and a battery), you can clean those things up. Just search on “removing rust with electrolysis”. Almost everything I put at the curb was taken by people passing by. 4 shelving units, plastic bins with old plastic pots, Christmas stuff, bags of used ordinary jars, a kneeled, a walker,… Everything I put out was corroded or sticky with something. I have one water barrel emptied and the inside of the barrel has a rough, prickly texture and the spout has corroded. Good I didn’t drink any of it.
Oh put Camphor block in each drawer.. I use to take a small film container and drill holes in it then drop a small block in each one.. works good..in power tool cabinets the same in each shelf..

boil your bologna till firm .. then cold smoke them package and freeze..

Then transfer to a freezer-safe container or bag. Label and date. five pounds of potatoes will give you ten to fifteen bags for the freezer.. I like them with the skins on..scrub them up..
