Half Holiday

This is a federal holiday, in case you have forgotten: Juneteenth.

The mail will not be delivered, but UPS and FedEx will be working.  Parking meters are one of today’s great racial dilemmas.

In a slower news climate, it would be interesting to discuss inequality in Federal Holidays – we could piss off everyone with that column.  But here’s a starting point:

Hispanic Population:
In 2023, the Hispanic population in the US was estimated to be around 65.22 million, representing 19.5% of the total population, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Black Population:
The Black or African American population was estimated to be around 47.7 million in 2022, representing 14.2% of the total population.

Thus – depending on the arrival and timing of the Second Mexican (Border) War – we might offer than Cinco de Mayo might be considered for inclusion in the PTO (paid time off) calculations.

Moreover, the (fast-declining) non-hispanic White population doesn’t have a (racially-based) holiday, except insofar as Labor Day, Memorial Day, and Independence days could be lumped by opposers of a Whiteenth.  Well, except you have to be really stupid to drop from 85 percent to an estimated 56.9 percent of Americans today.  Nothing to celebrate there… (someone’s losing the sex race).

Maybe Whites could be satisfied with Thanksgiving?

Like I said, to go any further would risk offending someone (or everyone). So, we will wrap up today’s prime pisseur by noting that:

North Korea has 71 public holidays, including Sundays. These holidays encompass a wide range of commemorations, including birthdays of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il, as well as anniversaries of military and political events. Many of these holidays are celebrated with large-scale events like military parades, mass dances, and other performances.

Oh…and no cars? No parking meters!

In contrast, Yes, parking meters are in use on Juneteenth in Chicago unless otherwise posted. Which we’d wonder if that’s not an affront to the 29.6% of Chicago residents who are Black. No free parking? While being taxed along with everyone else for sanctuary city costs? Cinco de Border soon come?

Here’s the FOMC for you:  Meet, yammer, nothing.  Which, we figure, sets up today as a meet, stammer, nothing, as well.

Looking at the future’s board earlier, looked like everything was coming down a bit except the groceries.  We think the real selloff will come late Friday because with wars and escalation paths open, who’d be silly enough to be long this pig of a market in here?

No, that’s not financial advice.  Just brute force reality.

If you don’t understand why our Peoplenomics report Wednesday focused so much on the coming inflation in Q3, don’t mind us.  We just try to beat the herd figuring out what Peter Schiff Predicts – ‘Worse Financial Crisis Than 2008’ As Fed Holds Rates: ‘The Solution Involves Much Higher Interest Rates’ As Years of Easy Money Trigger Stagflation And Investor Exodus.

Around the Ranch: Hardly a Holiday

Off to the doc today for a periodic blood pressure and “viscosity test.”

Since this is half a holiday, only half a column.

Fortunately liquor stores are open.  Weather looks like it’s almost hot enough to transition from the small glass of wine in the afternoon to a little gin on ice. G&T’s work well, but does anyone make a stevia quinine water?

Historical Medicinal Use of Juniper Berries:

Traditional Remedies: Juniper berries (Juniperus communis) have been used since ancient times for their purported medicinal properties. The Ancient Romans and Greeks used them to treat digestive issues, toothaches, and headaches, while Native American tribes like the Blackfoot and Crow used juniper berry tea for vomiting and post-childbirth recovery.  (It had a kind of opposite effect on me…)

Diuretic Properties: Juniper berries are known to have diuretic effects, which may help flush out the urinary tract and reduce water retention. This has been historically used to support kidney health and treat urinary tract infections (UTIs) in conjunction with proper medical treatment.  (Hmm..I don’t get UTIs…)

Anti-inflammatory Effects: Juniper berries contain compounds like flavonoids and essential oils that may reduce inflammation, potentially easing symptoms of arthritis or joint pain. Some traditional remedies, such as gin-soaked raisins, are used anecdotally to alleviate arthritis pain, though scientific evidence is limited.  (Liquid pain-killer, anyone?)

Antioxidant Content: Juniper berries are rich in antioxidants, including vitamin C and flavonoids, which may help combat free radicals, support immune health, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease or cancer. These properties are more pronounced in the berries themselves than in distilled gin.

Of course, we’d be remiss (and the lawyers would go crazy) if I didn’t mention:

    less of course youse be in Switzerland..they got their own botanical Gin there and they are lil sensitive about their superior botanicals. Go figure.

    Need new Tires for the Nissan Frontier 2010 – looking at Continental Terrain Contacts H/T 266/70 R16 – bout $220 per. Can anyone recommend a decent All Weather alternative ? Thanks.

        Local tire guy did not have Vredesteins in warehouse, I checked, then pulled trigger on Conti’s this AM – many solid rep reports.

        I just cant seem to be able to justify selling the 2010 Nissan Frontier P/U – and replacing with desired used Toyota 4 Runner. I can not get the Dollars to make sense.

        Cost of current P/U = $0 – bot it used in 2017. I carry minimal insurance as required. So it just maintenance costs – hard to beat that. Oh well A/C blows strong and of course..”Well its forty below and I dont give fuck, I got a heater in my truck, and I’m off to the rodeo..”

        • Blizzaks year ’round? Doesn’t seem to me like they’d last very long. Hakkas are the best, but Blizzaks are a damnfine winter tire (and a not-too-distant, second.)

          Based on that rebate (BTW it’s $200 if you get a Bridgestone Mastercard) I think you got the best deal available.

          I used to see DAC walking the streets. He’s from Cincinnati, but he’d bounce around the neighborhoods in small towns, everywhere from Pittsburgh to St. Looie, usually on tour, but he’d spend a couple days (instead of a couple hours) in a town and get a feel for the people who lived there.

          Ya ain’t heered nuttin’ ’till you’ve heard The Rodeo Song live, blaring out of a honkey-tonk Midwestern redneck bar…

    • Like my Pirelli “Scorpion Verde” tires on my mid size SUV … but not sure about their load rating for a full size pickup. For a standard mid size SUV I don’t think there is anything better out there (very very quiet, very nice soft ride, great in rain and SUPER in the snow for an all season tire)

      For my Suburban I use all season Michelins but they have been problematic … two out of four had to be replaced because of delamination issues. Other than a very bad product build issue they have been fine for that 1/2 ton vehicle. The ones I have are NOT for off roading … they are highway types but do have a high load rating.

    I looked at some *notes* and there was a * disturbance * in the Force this meeting. Our problem, at the root, seems to be brewed up tribalism. Ms. Mkt. didn’t mind no change (the Fed now feckless) it was non +ed by the Chairman’s comments. Rather convenient to blame tariffs when, truth be told, the Committee has a * legacy * issue on the line. So? Late every time …

    That, running out of beer, is a non-starter. Our Clan is all German and beer is life. In my case it’s a fondness for darks, Stouts, so once well stocked with proper “Bier,” it tends to stick. The House brew is Kalamazoo Stout. It’s local. A reminder to amateurs: once the hot comes on, store go-to spirits in the freezer. Also Perfekt.

      Kzoo Stout is pretty good, although I prefer Oberon. I’ve pickups half way to Traverse City, Ann Arbor, and across Ohio so I came early to play in the wind. Indiana still has 74,000 without power…

  8. We flew to Chicago in the summer of 2008 to visit my wife’s friend in Waukegan, got to wedding, etc., and we rented a car and I drove up. I felt robbed when I saw a $500 city tax on the transaction.

    FYI , Im talking about a supposed weapons system in space. Its a Tungsten rod about 20 feet long. Ive heard it can impact its target at up to Mach 15. Very deep penetrator. No warhead needed much like a hypersonic.

  10. I love a good G&T but don’t know of a sweetened Seltzer of tonic.
    If you want a sweet drink I always used either Sprite or 7Up with a bit wedge of lemon or lime, or better yet, my favorite, Fresca.
    I love the Grapefruit flavor, and you don’t need to sweeten, as it is zero calorie.
    Tuscaloosa got very hot back in my college days, and while all the southern boys kept Jack Black in the fridge, the bottom shelf of my fridge door had a bottle of Dr. Bombay, Fresca, and a bag of lemons. Everyone that I offered it to said “Gin is Sin” until that took a sip.

  12. Today I hear jets flying over and they are making an eerie howling sound. I decided to look up. It’s rainy and the sky is overcast so I wasted my time looking up. The jets are hidden in the clouds.

    • That’s an atmospheric aberration. When I’m out storm-spotting, I use the difference in sound to gauge when the next rainstorm will begin.

      When it becomes an “afterburner aberration,” I guarantee you’ll notice the difference…

    Doug Casey: A bit of history is in order: When the first US penny was minted in 1793, it was pure copper and weighed 208 grains (13.48 grams), larger and heavier than the current half dollar. It was reduced to 168 grains (11 grams) in 1795. In 1856, it was further reduced to 72 grains (5 grams).

    In 1864, it was reduced to 48 grains (3 grams) and was no longer pure copper but an admixture of 5% tin and zinc. This version of the penny lasted until 1982 when the government perpetrated a genuine fraud by replacing all the copper with zinc, disguised by a copper coating. Boobus americanus never noticed. Zinc usually trades at about a quarter of the value of copper. The weight of the penny also dropped to 38.6 grains (2.5 grams).

    The trend of reducing the penny’s intrinsic value has been steady from the beginning. Now, the penny is being eliminated entirely. Gold went away in 1933, silver in 1964, copper in 1982. Soon, all coins will be gone, then the paper currency.

    • not quite – the shield Penny or “the obongo” was the first fully copper clad zinc blank. they are held in separate containers in our household – they are not real as You say, but Fakes.

      They are a PERFECT examples of modern Government/Leadeship = 100 % FAKE.

  15. I will have to try the gin soaked golden raisins as soon as I find some. Damn arthritis! Stiff neck last week became unbearable pain and I visited the ER for a scan. Arthritic swelling neck joint pinched nerve on right shoulder side. Doc put me on steroid Prednisone, muscle relaxant cyclobenzeprine (making me dizzy), and more Oxy. It’s working, but my physical terrorist for the hip muscles will be disappointed at today’s appt. I spent the past week adhering to Rule #1….”Don’t Fall”, and no exercise to speak of. But the hip is fine.

      Please watch your oxy intake, its a rabbit hole that I wouldn’t wish on a enemy. Sports injuries from years ago, compressd discs. C5 C6 C7 in the neck that have fused together over time had me taking those like candy. Great while you’re on them, pure hell when you try to get off of them if you you take them consistently. try a 3 or 4 days on and 6 or 7 days off otherwise you’ll gladly trade the neck pain to avoid the withdrawals. Fortunately in CA you need a written prescription from the Governor to get them. They’ve really cracked down on doctors here who prescribe any opiates unless you’re a celebrity. Be careful be smart.

      • Oh, yeah, I’m well aware of the hazards and don’t get hooked on them. Very intermittent and only in case of extreme need… short term only. I hate the constipation side effect also. The worst time was when I had a stuck kidney stone and was on them for five weeks, and couldn’t wait to get back to ‘normal’. But I’m clear of the pain now. Tylenol is now first choice. Didn’t take the full prescription of Oxys.

    hmm..home made Sangria.. great idea for a hot summers night.. or.. masato or chicha
    masato… rice drink yummy
    ? cup of uncooked rice
    6 cups of water
    1 cinnamon stick
    2 cloves
    ½ to 1 cup of sugar to your taste
    Ground cinnamon for serving
    Instructions

    Place rice and the cinnamon stick in a pot and cover with two cups of water. Cook for about 25 minutes or until tender. Discard the cinnamon stick. Pour cooked rice into a blender with two cups of water and blend until smooth. Strain the mixture.
    In a small pot, heat up the sugar and one cup of water on medium heat until the sugar has dissolved.

    Bring back the mixture to the pot over low heat and cook for 20 minutes. Add the sugar mixture and the cloves. Add one more cup of water and serve over ice or chilled.
