The two biggies today are the Federal jobs numbers which look like so:
Both total nonfarm payroll employment (+57,000) and the unemployment rate (4.2 percent) changed little in June, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Employment continued to trend up in professional and business services, social assistance, and health care. Leisure and hospitality lost jobs.
And the two “reality checks” the first being what’s in the BLS Database about actual people, not establishment crappola: This month’s is the weakest showing of the year so far.
Then there’s the CES Birth-Death model where they make up…I mean estimate jobs that are under the radar. Only 8-thousand added this month…
This all rolls down to the second big deal: How are filings rolling down at the unemployment office.
We could go into how that’s impacting at the state level, if you’re interested.
Factory orders will be along at 10 AM Eastern. Then everyone will bug-out early after lunch because tomorrow is the designated pre-holiday ahead of the Fourth and I’m taking it.
Just after the jobs report, we saw stock futures turn higher. So today’s play is “Let’s pretend it’s all good out there anmd party hardy…” But is it really?
Cranking Up the News Compressor
I wasn’t just-a-kidding this week when I suggested that, at least for now, World War III seems to be running in week’s-only mode. I suppose some explaining is in order.
What changed overnight is Russian forces launched a major drone and missile attack on Kyiv, killing at least 10-13 people and injuring dozens more, with strikes hitting residential buildings. This followed Ukrainian President Zelenskyy warning of an impending “massive” strike and cutting short a trip abroad. Ukraine reported Russian losses exceeding 1.4 million troops cumulatively.
On the CONUS front: No major new U.S. domestic casualties or large-scale disasters ( meaning 3+ deaths, mass evacuations, or state emergencies) stood out in sweeps in our machine-intelligence sweeps of AP/Reuters/NWS sources.
Indirect U.S.-Iran talks in Qatar/Doha continued with progress reported on the Strait of Hormuz and unfreezing funds, contributing to lower oil prices (down ~1%, Brent near low $70s). Markets showed mixed U.S. futures with some pullback.
This is a pressures and counter-pressures day: Market has underwhelming findata for the week – and as we mentioned in Peoplenomics yesterday when monetary inflation is running over five percent and housing prices are doing up less than one percent, that sure sniffs like deflation in the wings to us. So do those lowering oil prices in the futures market.
One thing that may ripple: Ugly overnight in Japan with the Nikkei -1,741.81. Canary in the coal mine ahead of our three-dayer?
The upside is there, too, however. The digital delusion money Bitcoin was back on top of $60,000 which will keep the long weekend hype fires burning. Plus there’s the usual optimism with the prospect cold beer and warm sunshine to boost both ETOH blood levels and vitamin D, as well.

Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities likely continue or escalate in response to Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian infrastructure (e.g., satellite sites, fuel); outcome depends on air defenses and winter prep—high confidence escalation risk. Remember, we figure Vlad Putin is not going to rock-back on his heels and let Ukraine keep punching forever – and that’s why it looks like early WW III is running on weekends.
Along that same like, U.S.-Iran indirect talks may yield further de-escalation signals on Hormuz shipping; progress could stabilize oil flows, but breakdowns risk renewed premiums—medium confidence, timing days to weeks. Tying the world’s future to petroleum and then building out countries which suck up lots of it to run desalination plants so people have water? Just not solid systems level thinking in our view.

Rhizomatous types (RTF) spread and self-repair well, similar to Kentucky bluegrass. Tall fescue doesn’t mow down short as pretty-like. But to each their own. Point is? The much-hyped Rural Broadband initiative is making big sucking sounds. We are still mowing around a 20-foot fiber loop out at the power pole in front. And seems like we are not alone. U.S. rural broadband delays and “cyber poverty line” persistence — Billions allocated but permitting, fiber costs (up 40%), and execution lags mean many areas still underserved into 2026-2027. Actionable: We have two Starlink accounts (max and mini) and Brightspeed‘s latest “can’t dial off the local exchange (to, oh, 9-1-1 for example) seems to have been solved. We don’t hold our breath anymore and Starlink with MagicJack numbers is more reliable except in heavy precip.
The world of Science Fiction keeps getting closer: NASA/ISS Cold Atom Lab is producing exotic quantum matter (Bose-Einstein condensates) in space — Ultra-cold fifth-state matter easier to study without gravity. Actionable: Long-term plays in quantum sensors, computing, or precision tech; watch for dual-use breakthroughs. But with our hasty caveat that government won’t let really world-changing tech out for the public if it will dislodge the Powers-that-Be or contractors. Easiest home drone prevention that doesn’t break FAA regs near as I can figure. So the easiest prevention (check with a lawyer, I hear the ice cracking all around me as I write this) is to hang long runs of nearly invisible fishing line from tall trees. We have trees around our place where loose invisible fishing line (30 lb test) is strung and then every 2-3 feet there’s a “dangling line down to near ground level (*on calm days).
The theory of operation here is that a drone can be disabled rather splendidly when light fishing leader wraps around the blades. Unrecoverable. With more and more criminals using drones to “scout” homes before burglaries and such, an ounce (literally) of prevention. Just remember shooting at a drone is illegal (and yes, I’m a commercial drone pilot but I also like my privacy).
This is not advice but we do own the 100-foot class trees around our place and the FAA doesn’t have jurisdiction over yard work…yet. And the Pilot in Command is supposed to ensure safe operation of their aircraft…

Peoplenomics readers have known about this for a while., but no time like the present to lay it all out. At 77 – and halfway to 78 now – it’s time for me to dial it back. Way, way back.
This site has had an amazing history and it will continue to exist for a few more years; if for no other reason than to answer the question “Hey! Where’d that Ure feller go?” The answer: Out in the Shop. I miss my tools, my ham radio adventures and exploits, plus this weekend I will be building up the new Hermes Lite 2 and getting that on the air.

Urban has been a beast of my own creation. I am responsible for setting the ghastly publishing time of 7:30 AM – or a few minutes after when there is breaking economic news that comes out at 8:30 AM Eastern on appointed days. So…
- Today, July 2, 2026: I’m announcing the retirement transition publicly on UrbanSurvival.
- Peoplenomics will not be impacted — it will continue with the leading-edge long-wave economics, lifestyle, AI, and personal happiness content it always has. (Plus the real brain warmers.)
In the ultra-long-term, Peoplenomics will become the “George Corpus” site. Many of my digital dalliances (HiddenGuild.dev, HourADayGardening.com, Time-Engineering.com, etc.) will roll into archival sub-categories along with the Content Atlas that goes all the way back to 2001 — when Peoplenomics began as an “after two drinks sitting around the sailboat in San Diego” idea.
My most recent book, Timenamics: Time is the Hidden Currency, was a serious reminder about the reality of mortality. So I’ll be taking Fridays completely off, and Sundays too (no ShopTalk this weekend). Might do a few more ShopTalk Sundays, but get ’em while you can.
The Schedule Ahead
- August 1: No more ShopTalk Sunday. (This one’s hard — I love the projects — but shifting more time to doing rather than writing about them makes sense as energy levels evolve.)
- September 1: No more Monday UrbanSurvival. I haven’t had two back-to-back days off in almost two decades.
- October 1: No more Friday UrbanSurvival. Peoplenomics will then be written after the U.S. market close on Fridays and posted before bedtime. That gives me all day Friday for charts and projections, plus Saturday–Monday for real measurable work around here.
- November 1: No more Tuesday UrbanSurvival (this one depends on world events).
- December 1: UrbanSurvival moves to “major events only” (Depression signals, major market moves, true public service alerts, etc.).
By then G2 should be back from his medical officer role on the big server farms. He’s got a book to write and adventures of his own.
With all the tooling around here, you never know what mischief the old man will get into. Setting up a Radio Museum with some of the vintage gear could be fun. Or maybe we’ll build that house… Then there’s the time machine project. And actually no, not joking at all.
The next book will be The Time Farmer’s Secrets — a collection of lessons about how we all “plant our own futures” with our deeds every day. Then there’s a trio of books that may follow. One of them is about how AI will keep changing (and actually improving) the human lot, but by the third book in that series, I will break out how AI can reduce the human potential to bullshit one another (and ourselves) and that an “honest for a change planet” might actually have a path to a Thousand Years of Peace ahead of it… As I recently explained on Peoplenomics, one way we recognize intelligence in other people is by comparing our “training stack” with theirs…

My triva limits know no bounds – so let’s talk about shucks! Shucks Auto Supply (often stylized as Schuck’s) was a longstanding Pacific Northwest institution in the automotive parts retail sector. Harry Schuck founded the company in 1917 in Seattle, Washington, initially selling parts for bicycles, motorcycles, and the emerging automobile market. It grew steadily through the 20th century as car ownership boomed, becoming a go-to regional chain for do-it-yourself mechanics and professionals across Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and eventually Alaska. By the early 1980s, it operated around 58 stores and was known for its strong local presence and customer service in the PNW.
In 1983–1984, Pay ‘n Save acquired Schuck’s, integrating it into larger corporate structures. Subsequent ownership changes followed, including a spin-off and mergers. In 1986–1987, investors Jules and Eddie Trump (unrelated to Donald Trump) combined Schuck’s with Kragen Auto Parts and Checker Auto Parts to form what became Northern Automotive, later rebranded as CSK Auto (from the initials of Checker, Schuck’s, and Kragen). I was thinking about that old website and it reminded me of something from when I was young. Back when I worked 30–36 hours a week sacking groceries, stocking shelves, and running fresh and frozen, I had this dream of making a store ad and recipe page. I used to listen to a radio show called Kitchen Clatter while delivering film for the photo labs I ran, and it got me thinking. I wanted to make a recipe page people could clip into a three?ring binder, with the history of the dish on one side and coupons for the ingredients on the other. I even had a marketing idea for reduced price film that I went bout on a limb for but didn’t have the fines go see it to fruition. The ideas were solid — I just didn’t think I was smart enough back then to pull it off with the recipe idea… I think that’s what got me excited about the table of the gods cookbook..where archeologists decided to write the recipes and history of foods..

Last one was my neighbors, a ex jarhead, no problems as it was put it into next door neighbors pine trees. Someone recovered it, as we no longer see it stuck up there. We had a meeting at our facility today, and it finally laid out what’s been happening behind the scenes. For years it looked like money was moving — room rates went up for self pay residents, assets got spent down, and everything seemed “fine.” But once people shift to federal assistance, the reimbursement drops to about $1.10 an hour. That’s less than $800 a month, and no facility can operate on that. Our sister facility is about to close for exactly this reason…..the self pay group dwindled, and the federal rate can’t sustain the building, the staff, or the care. The new owner saw the math immediately, faster than most most of the past owners took three to five years to figure it out… and now they’re trying to figure out how to flip the model before the same thing happens here. It’s a hard truth, but at least now everyone’s looking at the real numbers instead of the illusion….The thing is.. after the farm,home,and business is gone.. there’s little else they can do..its also why Medicare patients are often made to change doctors and why the one that lived with us was sent a letter asking for his deposit on a VA scheduled appointment at a nearby clinic….I have seen statements for home care and for doctors visits that showed three dollars an hour so I was shocked to see that elderly care is at $1.10 per hour..plus medicine and physician cares..
Around these parts, SE Pennsytucky, retirement communities run the gamut. From State/County facilities ( gotta know someone) up to the AAA luxury joints. Little Mom is in a “upper middle” market kinda place. She said the “Asshole” factor at the 2 luxury joints in Gladwyne and Newtown Sq were way over the top. Everyone at those places suffered from the dreaded Mainline “lockjaw” disease. Chin juts out, and they talk thru their teeth, while looking down their nose at you.
Hardest time getting her to go in a cottage in the first place. Finally had meeting at White Stallion ranch(https://www.whitestallion.com/ ) in Tuscon (GemShow-Me/Horses-Betterhalf) with Moms younger brother, who was living out there at the time.
He agreed with Me, and that was all it took to get her ass moving. She still procrastinated until I gave her a deadline to make a decision, after which I was choosing the place for her to stay. She picked a place soon there after, thank goodness.
No more calls at 8:00 PM from hospital treating her broken wrist. “TBS! you need to come and pick me up at hospital and drive me home” Her house is less than 15 minutes from Hospital, my house ? an hour and half from her hospital. She would call all upset full of drama and emotion. All that from a Women who has treated me like shit for 64 years…wahwahwah

The place I work at is actually really nice. It was originally built by a friend and co worker who wanted to give elderly folks a decent, affordable place to live. He went belly up in a year. Even today, our rates are still half of what the big city facilities charge, but the building sells every three to five years because the math never works. It reminds me of when I delivered newspapers — it took me months to realize I was basically paying them to deliver the paper. The constant flow of residents makes it look like money is moving, but the truth is simple..self pay residents keep the lights on. Once someone’s home, farm, or business is gone, they shift to federal assistance, and that reimbursement can’t even cover minimum wage staff. That’s why the medical industry does its annual “witch hunt,” dumping higher paid employees who aren’t vested and replacing them with part timers or day labor. It’s also why there’s a nursing shortage and long wait times everywhere except the VA, which has full staffing — but runs like a government office, not a medical facility. After 3:30 it’s a ghost town. I’ve taken residents to their acute care clinic and had the doctor tell me to take them to the hospital. I told him, ‘Nope — STP. Stabilize and Transport. Let the man making the money make the million dollar decisions.’ They took care of him. With trillions spent on insurance and billions on research grants, the system could be fixed — but fixing one side breaks the other. It’s a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation, and we’re living in the middle of it….
where I was shocked is how fast this new owner realized the mess ..
the last place the wife worked a guy got a billion dollar loan..bought facilities and hospitals across the country..then took the money that the patients and residents paid and stopped paying bills and wages..MRI and cat scan equipment repossessed for non payment..we donated food depends laundry supplies until everyone bailed..then vivid hit the government gave him something like forty million dollars even though hospitals and nursing facilities went belly up..up until that I believed banks had to have some collateral and a person with some fiduciary responsiblity..lol instead they loaned a moron that had a poor payment history a billion dollars..so maybe the stories of welfare recipients getting a couple hundred grand a year and loans for half a million for a home is true without any job or credit history..last I heard besides the what twenty facilities in the wasteland several all across the USA even in texas..the last I heard was a hospital in Omaha..

the list is huge..now the owner now is trying g to do the right thing but forced to make some decisions..raise rates for the self pay..It is my pet peeve..I was face with astronomical medical bills before I was shaving.. lets face it you aren’t going to pay off a half mil medical bill at three bucks an hour.. even now my bad teeth I can only get care at 40% interest on care credit….I hated to even smile until I was forty..ive been told by the meals on wheels group to go to Canada or mexico..when they wanted to do a surgery blue cross was sending me pamphlets from hospitals all around the globe to consider for the surgery..
A friend got his surgery from a surgeon that taught it at gwu..in Brazil.. where his clinic is..the medical system is broken..when thirty tylenol cost just shy a grand..oh I’m ranting again..but that’s because its been the Bain of my existence..

Back in 1987 I had the opportunity to purchase a bunch of spectrum liscenses by simply paying the application fee and filing with FCC, several hundred$ per application. Do this in rural counties as connectors between metro areas (at the time the equivalent of an out of the money call).

When you release heavy stories on a Friday, people have the weekend to calm down, relax, and settle their nerves. By Monday, the shock wears off and the public reaction is softer.
Federal holidays work the same way — drop the big headlines when people are distracted, then let the “it’s not so bad” effect kick in once everyone’s back to routine. It’s not about truth, it’s about timing.
News isn’t just information — it’s choreography of events….

I think we should have a retirement party! I’ll host at the ranch in the East Bay Hills. Plenty of parking for self contained camping and lots of hotels in the area for 5 star camping. It would be fun to meet everyone including LOOB, BIC, Ray, Andy… and many others. If an in person party just doesn’t work due to logistics, maybe an on-line virtual party some evening? Maybe Andy would be asked to do his dance in our Mystic Meadow up on the hill near the Old Man who hangs out there! Thoughts?

That’s a possibility as well or even a combination of both. We are located in the East Bay hills of the San Francisco Bay Area in California. We could fire up the outdoor wood fired pizza oven, play Horseshoes, Bocce Ball and Pickle Ball and maybe pitch in for a local caterer to barbecue ribs an fixins. As you stated, the group is from all over, and it might not be realistic, but it would be interesting to see if there is any interest.

LOOB, are you using MS Word (or the like) to create your replies? It will happily use an ‘extended Roman’ character set, which can be limited to 8-bit ASCII, but will happily use Unicode (16-bit characters)
The software running the comments has limitations on its character set. Your “em dash” and “en dash” are part of either extended character set (8-bit ASCII or Unicode), and the software will replace at least some of those extensions with a question mark. Stick to single hyphens, or if you must have two, put a space between them — or type the two hyphens into the reply box as I just did
This is also the reason why some correspondents posted some things in Cyrillic (Unicode only), and got all of the characters printed as question marks.
Same thing for fractions — if you type in 1/2 and your editor produces a single character, that character is also an ‘extended character’ and will show up here as a question mark.

Damn, George. At least it won’t be cold turkey. Checking in daily is a simple pleasure and a moment of fun when the community responds.
And I actually did buy boat anchors before the boat was launched because I was able to get a great deal. It’s one thing on a boat that barely looses value for the abuse it takes. I see ones all the time in the marina that must be thirty or forty years old and other than a little mud and rust are as good as new. Hard to imagine anything on a boat, except the ballast keel, that has that kind of longevity. All anchors are great investments. They are the true mark of freedom. Moorings suggest permanence, anchors are not the same.
Also looking at 80 in a few weeks and have just recently made great contact with a 30 year old woman who last won the solo round the world race. At 100 lbs she whipped a fleet of men, managing her fast forty footer across the southern oceans. I now have a person who is interested in my almost seventy years of sailing , design , and boatbuilding experience. Now I know how George feels knowing someone, many someones, actually give a shit about what you might know. She is going to continue to prove things to other young people, especially females, and hopefully open up the ocean world to many of them. There is a small trend to see female single handers finding something great about becoming oceanic. It’s a human thing Out There.

everyone has something …everyone.. my fathers was wood cutting he had every wood cutting gadget you could think of..his old four foot chainsaw was just on an auction..the only one I ever seen..he made his own chains..mine is kitchen gadgets..( use to be woodworking and photography platemaking etc. now that I’m blind in one eye I don’t have depth if field..) anyway his was concrete.. one year we were visiting about fathers day gifts..I said hey..dad loves concrete and he has a hundred or more of his anchors..I think we should get him a small cow doorstop mold.. they glared at me and threatened physical violence if I bought him one..lol lol a whole yard of cows lol..
