Around the Ranch: Chrono-Fence & Sidereal Stump
We have some pretty neat conversations. Every afternoon, 4 PM, it’s “wine time” in the 180 (degree view) room.
Monday we were chilling – after our Monday call with the Major and his Mrs.
Elaine looks at me and asks, “What time do you think it is?”
I told her – then checked with Alexa – I was two minutes off.
“How did you do that?”
“You mean tell the time within a couple of minutes? Allow me to explain…”
I then launched into a perfectly useful discussion of how to tell time using “natural means.”
There’s a shaft of light that comes through the tall pines and casts a shadow on a particular part of the old cedar fence that marks the edge of a power line right of way. I noted the time once and ever since, adjusting for changes in day length, I’ve been using that as my visual clock reference. Moves a couple of minutes a day, depending on time of year. That’s the “Chrono-Fence.”
The other? Well, remember a while back I cut down a big elm (or was it larch?) that was in the middle of the front yard and working its root system out toward the septic? Well, it had to go.
The remaining stump, about 2-feet worth, has been spared so far because somewhere in my head, there’s a mnodel being built of a sidereal time piece. The Sixdereal Stump.
Some people – looking out the window – will just enjoy the view, watch the deer wander through, the remaining cats frolic and hunt. But me? Always data collecting.

Try though I did in some really challenging winds on the Straits, I could never get the old Hunter 40 to even rise up on step, let alone a full plane. But Egor sounds Truth when such things as an 18 ft Geary designed “flattie” can rise tackibng downwind (“Pull the board!”) and thus leaving the old monohull live aboards slowly wing-on downwind. With the cute blonde, comfortable jazz, diesel heat, sandwiches and a cup of hot chicken noodle, autohelm driving – watching the Flattie drivers and wondering “How can they get off a plane and remain dry in the process?” Plenty of time to sheet out before a knockdown or the seniro sized craft.

Our sweet ride has hit 13.7 surfing in 25T and for a 42′ monohull is not rolling, not pitching. One simple sail, one halyard, one sheet, a couple of securing lines, only one of which is actually important to the set of the sail. The whole rig above the deck, mast, sail, battens, boom, and yard weighs under 450 pounds, thanks to the sailor’s friends, carbon fiber and spectra. Not to mention the design genius of our old friend and naval architect, Jim Antrim, always a lover of fast under sail (he’s an elder too).
Time has come where there can be a paradigm shift in design thinking that changes everything about floating life, making it more comfortable and safe. And don ‘t forget the moat feature where you can locate your kingdom far from nefarious interest. Be a blip no one cares about except Neptune and Aeolus.

1) As people get hungry a couple of weeks out and can’t feed their children THEY WILL STEAL, and this applies to rural areas as well as urban areas. Don’t think that just because you live rural that people do not get SNAP (EBT card) benefits. They do … and when a parent’s kid is going hungry they will do what they have to do to get food for it
2) The great middle of the electorate will turn against those in control, which is the Republicans since they control both Houses of Congress, the Presidency, and everyone believes the Supreme Court too, if millions of children across America start to go hungry (which isn’t in just a day or ten of no Snap benefits … but would start showing up everywhere about mid November).

I work a couple of half days at a local Catholic food bank, Monday packing food, Friday dispensing. There are a couple of older coulples who drive up in trucks much newer than mine with two or three yapping dogs in the back as they get their three days of food. The food for those dogs costs more than for a couple of kids, I’ll bet. Everyone has had to complete local and state paperwork to prove they are of an income level that is eligible, but it does bother me some. We buy our food from the Atlanta Food Bank at much reduced rates, but there is never enough food on hand to fill the lists we submit of the various foods needed for a balanced diet. It is going to get worse, I’m sure.
