Domain Zoom Levels Monday, Shop Simpleton

We need to begin with the zoom-in today.  Because the rest of the week is likely to blur.

That’s because tomorrow is the Case-Shiller housing report. Then, an hour later, Labor’s JOLTS report will pop – and that launches up into the Employment package into Friday. ADP, Challenger Cuts, and federal numbers.

Unfortunately, markets are in full-on clown car mode. Every headline is grabbing for the steering wheel.  The most “in your face” is the BlinkLab summary:

Financial Tempest Nears Spin Cycle

1. IRAN / HORMUZ — Friday’s hoped-for diplomatic relief is reversing in markets. Brent jumped more than 2% Monday after Trump rejected Iran’s proposal, although both sides still indicate further talks are possible; importantly, Qatar-linked LNG vessels are again moving through Hormuz, providing a small physical-normalization counter-signal. Odds: 70% that diplomacy continues this week without producing an immediate comprehensive settlement.

2. SAUDI / HOUTHI — The secondary Gulf front is becoming more dangerous just as Washington tries to contain the primary one. Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan has arrived in Washington for talks with Marco Rubio after Saudi forces intercepted Houthi missiles and drones, while Houthi sources now claim Saudi strikes in Taiz caused dozens of casualties. Odds: 65% that another significant Saudi-Houthi strike or interception occurs during the next 96 hours.

3. RUSSIA / UKRAINE — The air war intensified again overnight while Ukraine reports a ground gain. A Russian guided bomb wounded 22 people in a Kharkiv apartment building after Sunday’s drone attacks killed five elsewhere, while a senior Ukrainian commander says Kyiv has recaptured territory in northern Donetsk. Odds: 75% that the current elevated Russian long-range strike tempo persists through Thursday.

4. MARKETS — Our three-clock model is producing its first clean Monday confirmation. Oil is up, Asian equities fell, the dollar is near a two-month high, gold dropped roughly 3% to a seven-week low, and Fed-hike expectations strengthened—the precise sequence BlinkLab was watching from geopolitical stalemate into physical-energy pricing and then financial repricing. Odds now have moved to 70% that oil/rates remain the dominant cross-market transmission pair through midweek.

Brent was nuzzling $108. South Korea was down nearly 3%. But with the dollar stronger, that presses down gold’s retail pricing because your strong dollar buys more.  Following?

Now, Take the Green Eyeshades Off

We need to extend to a lot of adjacent domains.

You know I am a huge fan of AI – and not just because I have written multiple books on the topic. Monday is one of my “days off” in the retirement where AI leverage works well.  But, nowhere near as well as a considered client note from my consigliere.

Two huge trend changes to keep an eye on – because these are about to drive our collective future.

One recommendation is to read the Robert Pape book. Our Own Worst Enemies: America and the Age of Violent Populism. This is the kind of thing that is going through Europe, too.

For example: Sweden has entered a government-formation problem after opposition leader Magdalena Andersson said she cannot presently form a government. This is political left-right fragmentation but behind that has been EU demography over the past decade.

The second heads-up is the rise of artists on global issues.  And yes, I am speaking of the Ed Sheeran story.  Not familiar? He’s a musician.

Ed Sheeran’s Loop tour blew up in mid-September 2026 after opener Macklemore used Sheeran’s MetLife Stadium dates to call for a free Palestine and perform a protest song; stadium operators—including Patriots owner Robert Kraft—pushed to have Macklemore dropped, Sheeran said the promoter made the call rather than him, and the rest of the support acts plus his backing band walked off in protest. A week later he played Philadelphia alone, called it one of the worst weeks of his life, apologized for mishandling it, condemned the October 7 attack as horrific and the Gaza campaign as catastrophic, unjustifiable, and disproportionate, and said he almost canceled the tour until he saw fans still holding tickets.

Application note? Artists becoming politically active may be a lagging indicator that an issue has escaped politics and entered popular culture.

Inside Pages

India is showing how quickly the Gulf problem travels into oil-importing economies. Indian equities fell near six-month lows Monday as rising crude compounded an already seven-week losing streak. Financial contagion is widening.

China’s industrial profits are still growing, but August momentum slowed and the split between technology manufacturing and weaker traditional sectors widened. That keeps China’s AI-industrial boom alive without resolving its broader economic imbalance. Again: divergence widening.

Chinese for “lebensraum”? (Living space) A Chinese research vessel has generated a fresh Philippine security dispute near Batanes. The Philippine Coast Guard accused it of spoofing its reported location while operating in northern waters, extending the maritime contest beyond the weekend’s shoal-centered story.

The AI equity trade may be moving from indiscriminate enthusiasm into a second, more selective phase. J.P. Morgan argues the recent pullback improved valuations and positioning enough to revive investor interest. Say what?

And on the morning “Hank Watch” – Hurricane Polo remains an eastern Pacific disruption rather than a U.S. catastrophe signal. Mexican Pacific ports have been closed or affected as authorities contend with high seas and coastal impacts. Good week to surf Baja?

Around the Ranch:  The Shop Simpleton

There I was going through the battery battlefield.  How to keep track of which ones are charged and which ones are ready?

A simple answer appeared. Turn the “used batteries” on the charger bench upside down.  The logic would be “those have all the energy run out of them.”

The simple (*obvious) shop tip wasn’t the reason to note it.

It was to explain that I need more days off and time in the shop to “get sharp again” after too much butt time (in front of a computer) over the summer this year.

Rain should be here at the end of the week.  Please.

  1. Did a little mowing up by the road Saturday. Rode the bicycle yesterday. Resulting pain levels were manageable. I’ll start edging up the exercise routine this week. Still too hot to wear the stealth Leatt armor when I ride, so I need to be extra careful.
