Rumors persist of officials using insider knowledge to profit from market shifts, securing high-paying roles in industries they once regulated, and enjoying perks—travel, accommodations, and influence—that seem far removed from public service all while having the appearance to achieve absolutely nothing .. when have we actually seen congress to do anything..during an election year they bring up issues that affect e drone which we have coined..the dead horse issues..then they drag it around before coveiniently tabling it for a sick vacation.. many will argue how they don’t have the time to read the bills we know they sure didn’t write them..the bills are written long and complicated to the point that most give up figuring out just what they are talking about..then slipping crap in the bill hidden from plain view.. These actions, whether legal or not,Has eroded the trust and has reinforced the perception that power is often used not to serve, but to secure. It’s not bitterness to notice—it’s stewardship to name the gap between duty and reward.of course this is just the opinion I have over what I have seen and..I am a nobody at the bottom..A catfish in society…

          It pisses me off when people refer to the “Social Security lock box” because such a device never existed. When FDR established “Social Security” he knew it was a con. The Republicans sued the Administration, and “Social Security” was allowed, as a “tax,” not a “retirement fund,” (because the latter would have been unconstitutional.) Either borrowing from it, or including FICA collections in General Revenue, would be perfectly okay, because FICA was simply “another tax…”

      • my biggest gripe is if .I could have given a path for the funds taken out of my paychecks to be invested in .. bonds etc . I would have easily accumulated millions through the years .. it is the one thing I tell all the kids . put away what your getting taken out as young as you can the compounding of the funds is where you make it . it should double at least every 7-10 years..most of the people I know leaves the hospital then join the va healthcare..great wages extensive vacation dirt cheap health insurance great retirement and they wipe out expensive school loans.. just was visiting with an old friend yesterday at the clinic..if she could do the moonwalk she would . it was win win for her

    • The vast amount of “infrastructure” is a local, not a Federal problem and a local, not a Federal responsibility.

      The Federal government is responsible for “maintaining the Post roads” which in 20th or 21st Century lingo translates to “Federal highways.” They are not responsible for creating or maintaining State, County, Township, or municipal infrastructure of any kind, although they supply a portion of funding for street & highway maintenance, in exchange for States and Counties adopting the Federal “rules of the road” as a de facto set of driving, licensing, and traffic control standards.

      The Federal government is not responsible in any way, for gas, water, electricity, phone, cable, Internet, or any of the hardware or buildout required to create or maintain these, and in most cases, neither is a State or local government. If you don’t like your local infrastructure, blame your local union officials, or your crooked politicians, the ordinances they passed, and the numbskulls who voted them into office…

        • Interlochen is a private, year-around school. Their music curricula is second in both prestige and accomplishment, to only Julliard. Jewel Kilcher is the famous grad who springs to my mind offhand, but there have been a bunch of others. Lots of big name music groups make a stop there during Interlochen’s summer concert series. It is a very pleasant venue.

          I’ve been to Interlochen a number of times over the years. A concert ticket that’s $300 in Chicago or Pittsburgh may be less than $40 up in the Michigan woods. Along with Interlochen, Grand Traverse County also rocked 38 wineries, 27 breweries, five distilleries, the biggest damn’ Indian casino I’ve ever seen (Ojibwa — Chippewa to the masses) and the Coast Guard’s national water rescue training center, the last time I was there.

          Interlochen is a dozen miles or so south of Traverse City, in the middle of a million acre forest. That forest would be a great place for private or clandestine meetings. One drone with an IR camera and you could spot a human snoop or assassin while they were still many miles away. Didn’t know Interlochen had a place secure enough for high-value targets. Maybe they don’t? I’m sure the CG facility does, and I believe Interlochen has a helipad…

I agree that “Prepping” has slowly left the general lexicon, in fact, it seems to have taken-on a negative connotation – “Oh., he was a ‘Prepper’., which I have seen a couple of times lately., – most people., the vast majority it seems., are in no way prepared for even “a bad week, or two”, much less “a bad year”. The average American can not raise $500 in an emergency. The average household has less then two weeks of food on hand. It’s a very long list of very negative truths. I’ll stop there.

    • It’s always been negative — at least to the mainstream media.

      “Prepping” came naturally to me, because I lived, worked, and went to school in the snow belt. Heck, in college, my girlfriend’s bestie spent three days at the bottom of a ditch under seven feet of snow, when his car failed to follow the dotted line he couldn’t see. The girl who was one of my BFFs, and was the sister of the girl who’d become my niece-by-marriage, buried her ’70 Impala under almost 10 feet of snow (different year, different snowstorm — I rescued her for school.)

      You live in snow country, you “prep.” I carried a set of “Sno Treds,” water, various high-density rations, a hand axe, shovel, kindling, a .25 auto (no firearms prohibition on campus at that time), and various other niceties to college with me as well as flares, warm-weather gear, ropes & winches, sand, salt, rope, etc. To do otherwise simply didn’t make sense. I spent two days alone in physics class with a prof who drove his 8wd John Deere to the school (even the dorm rats didn’t go to class…)

      The first “preppers” I “met” on the Internet were folks who lived in hurricane zones. They were the first to ever broach the terms “GO-Bag” and “3-day pack” to me, because they were ALL preppers, in that they had 72hr emergency bags to sustain them, for when they had to flee a hurricane.

      For some reason, the lamestreamers have always regarded anyone who prepares to handle a disaster (even though both FEMA and the Red Cross tell EVERYONE to do so) as nutjobs. I can’t really explain it, other than I believe the media worms honestly think they’re better than we proles, and if survival of a disaster is a zero-sum game (which for some stupid reason, they assume), they should be assured (by the people they’ve hired to build their GO-Bags) of being in the lifeboat which doesn’t capsize.

      They look down upon us because they wish to shame us into dying.

        • You grew up in the St. Joe / Elkhart County area, right? I’ve friends there. The lake effect is legendary, and beyond the ken of people who’ve never experienced it.

          I’m very familiar with the folks who live in West Michigan. (I had a great uncle in Grand Rapids and learned some of my British Sportscar repair tricks at University Motors.) They are damn’ near, to a one, (except for the hardcore stoners) the salt of the Earth. Even the rednecks and curmudgeons have your back when you’re truly in need. I’ve thought several times about moving to someplace between Muskegon and Ludington – just can’t do it unless Michiganders extract their heads from their nether regions and learn how to (A) vote for honest, quality candidates and (B) eliminate some of the draconian rules and regs that past legislative sessions have imposed on residents.

[ Self-serving Phd’s have no imagination.., none.] Of all the twelve researchers not one had ever considered, or even thought about what would happen when the prescription drug supplies dry up, or completely vanishes. It never occurred to them., when I asked: “Are any of you on prescription medication?., or one of your family members, or close friends ?” – “That one supply chain break will probably kill millions.” was the first response – four of them were on prescription meds, six knew others who were. Yet, it never occurred to them. If I remember correctly, 84% of all prescription medications are manufactured overseas and mainly in China. India was second, I believe. And both of them do not like us very much.

      My health insurance person tells me of his clients nearly 60%+ of all of the people over 65 who he insures are on some type of maintenance drug (depending upon what drug they NEED often determines which health insurance company and which health insurance plan he puts them into)

      I find it hard to believe that such a basic concept would not be recognized by people who are supposedly “educated” and actually have an ability to think.

      Alas the dumbing down of Americans is now so complete that even the most educated fail to see the foundational level items that keep our society functioning.

      Electricity … what would happen if 30%, or more, of our grid capacity suddenly disappeared? (that could happen with just a dozen or so people scattered around the country taking out a few key switches /transformers at key locations)

      WATER …. OMG, water is the lifeblood of cities. Without water a city has a life expectancy of only about a week. Take the water pumping stations off line and VOILA … the city has to virtually shut down very quickly (look at what happened to the Toledo Ohio metro area a decade ago when Lake Erie water could not be used for 3 days because of super high toxin levels in the lake water … a DISASTER for the metro complex as ALL the drinking water for 500,000+- people had to be trucked in)

      Phoenix NEEDS it’s water canals to the Colorado river to keep transporting water to it (though is does have some water storage up in the mountains) and Tucson relies on the same water PUMPED UPHILL from Phoenix to provide it’s water to that city (Tucson has NO mountain reservoir storage AT ALL so iwould be in worse shape quicker since it NEEDS that pumped uphill water).

      City after city in the US is very vulnerable on the water front.

    Today, the Secret Service announced they foiled some big national security threat. Major news organizations (e.g. NYTimes) have repeated their claims without questioning them.

    The story is bogus.

    What they discovered was just normal criminal enterprise, banks of thousands of cell “phones” (sic) used to send spam or forward international calls using local phone numbers. Technically, it may even be legitimate enterprise, being simply a gateway between a legitimate VoIP provider and the mobile phone network.

    The backstory is a Secret Service investigation into threats sent to politicians via SMS messages. The miscreant used one of this spam farms to mask their origin. When the Secret Service traced back the messages, using radio “triangulation” (sic) to find the mobile phones, they found these SIM farms instead.

    One of the reasons we know this story is bogus is because of the New York Times story which cites anonymous officials, “speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation”. That’s not a thing, that’s not a valid reason to grant anonymity under normal journalistic principles. It’s the “Washington Game” of “official leaks”, disseminating propaganda without being held accountable.

    The Secret Service is lying to the press. They know it’s just a normal criminal SIM farm and are hyping it into some sort of national security or espionage threat. We know this because they are using the correct technical terms that demonstrate their understanding of typical SIM farm crimes. The claim that they will likely find other such SIM farms in other cities likewise shows they understand this is a normal criminal activity and not any special national security threat.

    Their official statements are obvious distortions, like being within 35 miles of the UN building. Their unofficial statements are designed to exaggerate even more, like “never before seen such an extensive operation”. The Secret Service doesn’t normally investigate such crime, so of course they are unlikely to have seen such an extensive operation.

    Another way you know that the NYTimes is lying is because of the independent “experts” they quote to confirm it.

    For decades now, when the NYTimes has a cybersecurity story from anonymous government officials, they quote James A. Lewis to confirm it. This guy used to work for CSIS (Center for Strategic and International Studies) but apparently has changed employers recently. Whenever I blog/tweet about bogus NYTimes cybersecurity stories, I point out this relationship with James Lewis. When you see anonymous government officials and James Lewis quoted in a NYTimes story, you are seeing government propaganda.

    Another “expert” the NYTimes quotes is Anthony Ferrante [update]. He’s got the resume that the NYTimes loves. I’m famous among hackers for my technical expertise, but I would never be quoted in the NYTimes, because I don’t matter. The NYTimes only quotes people who matter, meaning, people involved at high levels of government, people with their resume posted on WEF.

    Both of these “experts” claim things that are objectively silly. Ferrante says “my instinct is this is espionage” and “could be used for eavesdropping”. This is false, this arrangement cannot be used for eavesdropping and there’s nothing particularly related to espionage here. Lewis claims “only a handful of countries could pull off such an operation, including Russia, China and Israel”. That’s false, I can pull this off, personally. It’s just a SIM farm. Sure, there’s some capital involved, on the order of $1 million, but it could be setup and managed by a single person. It likely wasn’t setup all at once with that much money, but has been slowly growing for years as profits are funneled back into setting up more SIM accounts

    Who are you going to trust, these Washington insiders, “people who matter”, or an actual hacker like myself?

    I say “phones” above in quotes above because the actual hardware isn’t like the phones you have in your pocket. Your Android/iPhone is a computer with a single “baseband” radio that talks to the cell tower, and maybe two SIMs in case you have two different phone accounts. That’s what a SIM is — a chip that locks you to a specific phone account.

    A “SIM box” has single computer (often running Linux), maybe 20 baseband radios, and maybe 100 physical SIM cards. It rotates among the SIM accounts when spamming SMS messages.

    A SIM card may be the same sort of prepaid $10/month SIM you buy at Walmart that allows 1000 SMS messages per month. There are other types of accounts they might use, so they aren’t necessarily walking out of a Walmart with bags full of prepaid SIMs after clearing off the shelves, but it’s close enough. They are trying to fly under the radar, appearing to the mobile networks as normal users.

    The Secret Service hypes this as some sort of national security threat that can crash cell towers. The reality is that this is just a normal criminal threat that sometimes crashes cell towers. SMS is an ancient technology that works slowly even in modern cell networks. Too many SIM boxes spamming SMS in one location can indeed overwhelm a cell tower. You actually don’t need a bunch of SIM boxes to do it — you can sometimes crash a cell tower with a single baseband radio. Ask me how I know.

    The point is: while criminals do sometimes crash or overload cell towers, an actual foreign threat can do this much easier than using SIM farms. In any event, there are thousands of cell towers around New York City satisfying 10 million subscribers, so crashing a few won’t make much difference.

    The correct quote from any expert is that this looks like a normal criminal SIM farm, that’s used for a wide range of purposes, often SMS spam. They are pretending to be thousands of normal mobile phone users to prevent the mobile phone companies from shutting them down. Some miscreant likely used the service to hide the origin of threats sent as SMS messages to politicians, which is why the Secret Service is involved. Theres no evidence the Secret Service is involved due to some actual national security or espionage threat — that’s just propaganda they are hyping.

  16. Ure point about disruption of settlements is well taken. I started keeping a month or two credit in utility and comm accounts years ago. More for water service. It drives the little bean counters crazy. I have one comm account which simply refuses payment in advance. Others rattle the sabre, but then take the money.
    It doesn’t matter what the source of the settlement disruption: sabotage, war, bank runs, banking holidays, government collapse, etc, all affect your ability to settle accounts. And you say, oh, I’ll just go online and pay with a card. Or, I’ll just drop off a check. Maybe. And maybe you get told, cash only, old son, until the banks reopen. It would have to go on for quite a while for PM’s-or-the-highway to become a thang.
    Best defense is to stay paid at least one month ahead, and have cash for longer term. Making payments to outfits that aren’t local would eventually become a challenge in a cash-only rules of engagement environment. Remember- it isn’t usually the bolt from the blue that gets you, it’s the day-to-day economics. You start down that hill slowly, then the free fall is sudden-like. And times never get tough enough to put leg breakers and repo men out of business.
    My grandfather lost a farm during the height of the Great Depression because he asked for a one week extension on a yearly loan payment. He had the money in process from a crop sale. There are some laws against that sort of thing these days, but the lending and law industries under economic collapse conditions are not likely to get more forgiving.
    Did any of this show up in dLynn’s Depression study? Depressions tend to be disruption of settlements in slow motion, until it gets real sudden.

      • No electricity means no smart meters. No smart meter means a gas or water “meter reader” has to physically come by and manually shut off your flow.

        The meter reader also has no electricity. By the time your utility is “in disconnect,” his will be too, and unless he’s a prepper, after watching his family starve for weeks, he’s going to have much more important things to do than drive all over the county, shutting off meters. The shut off valve on gas and water meters is a ball valve with a perforated ear on either side, to allow the valve to be padlocked closed. Should the situation ever arise and one be worried about being shut off, all they need do is install their own padlock to padlock the valve open.

    • AFAIK I’m not raging.

      Honestly, I believe we’ve all been feeling a little out of sorts since a couple months before December of 2012. I know the “queeze” hit me in about July of ’12, and has never completely gone away. It’s as if our species senses something, but can’t put our collective finger on it, and we’re not empathic enough to see through the fog, so we jump at every implausible theory, because they’re better than nothing…
