“Advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for June 2025, adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, were $720.1 billion, up 0.6 percent (±0.5 percent) from the previous month, and up 3.9 percent (±0.5 percent) from June 2024. Total sales for the April 2025 through June 2025 period were up 4.1 percent (±0.4 percent) from the same period a year ago. The April 2025 to May 2025 percent change was unrevised from down 0.9 percent (±0.2 percent).

Us?  We think the whole world could emphasize people more, products less and we’d all be better off. Still, here are the bodies and there are the credit cards…poof! Retail’s up.

The diffusion index for current general activity rose 20 points to 15.9 in July, its first positive reading after three negative readings and its highest reading since February (see Chart 1). Nearly 32 percent of the firms reported increases in general activity this month (up from 25 percent last month), while 16 percent reported decreases (down from 28 percent); 49 percent reported no change (up from 44 percent). The index for new orders increased 16 points to 18.4 this month, and the current shipments index increased from 8.3 to 23.7, also their highest readings since February.”

Investors, corporations, and Airbnbs are pushing locals out of housing.  This is why we have been advocating buying a home – even li8ke we did, a double wide in the woods – because it locks the cost.  And when it’s paid off, all you have is the “rent paid to government” via confiscatory tax policies.

Public schools are overcrowded, under performing, and increasingly politicized—while student debt for practical jobs is still sky-high. Around the Ranch: Woo-Woo or Statistics?

Wanted to talk to a buddy of mine Wednesday.  So I asked him to send me his phone number – I had misplaced it.  So he did. But when I called, it went to a voicemail for some woman named Angela.

Well, he got tired of waiting for my call, so he called me.  We had a grand old chat – catching up.  Then he mentioned “…my daughter Angela…”

“Wait!  Was that her number you fat-fingered sending to me?”

“No,, that was my number but there was one digit off.., I gave you a 5 instead of a 6….”

That’s when it dawned on us that this was either woo-woo OR one of the most unusual coincidences ever.

That sent me to the Ai stack.  What are the odds?

“130,000 / 40,000,000 = 0.00325 ? or about 1 in 307.”

And this is the Problem of Woo-Woo in a nutshell.  The odds of that happening at less than 1 in 300 and yet there it was and both of us were (sort of) amazed.

But it’s the core issue of woo-woo.  “What are the odds?”

This kind of thing happens to people almost every day (ask Andy) but few people notice it because they are not tuned into The Dude and how it all works.

But when it goes on for years….you kind of reach a conclusion.

    Tell me when you dream of an iridescent blue dragonfly landing on your hand after a silvery shape-shifting light ship passes overhead above a verdant green park on a bright sunny day, injecting your open palm as though mating with your being – you watch your hand, and then your forearm, and then your whole arm dissolving, disappearing into a swirl of red and green………..and touch BLISS.     My belief is the think tankers at the Fed (love ’em hate ’em they have good staff people, data sniffers) provide a lot more insight than this or that data point which captures the chatter as Fed meeting nears. These guys wear belts and suspenders. They rely more on large smoothed models than yapping from old or new media. Stodgy. Bankers. Fed minutes lent cause to think a minor cut is coming. My guess? Change in language. Conclusion: doesn’t really matter.

    George, your output exceeds my intake but I rise (well, am sitting but) to mention again to acquire bicycles. Mobility when the lights go out, err, cars won’t start, uhm, gas stations aren’t on station. My sense is you have a good Rube Goldberg in you and could suggest how some could generate small power, maybe charge cell phone or fire router, by becoming your own 1HP Hit & Miss Engine. Or, I might repurpose a former ceiling fan to build my own wind powered water pump.

    Awesome triple play of rolling narrow fronts each spawned lots of wet. The neatly weekly washout is busting out beautious. Outside temp got whacked with each passing WX front and, today it’s upper 60s F with a breeze. Farmers make bank. The field melons of every sort, and berries, are extra sweet. C’mon Summer!

    • Turn off the breaker panel. If there is no completion path to Earth, you’re good – essentially, I work ont he hot sdiee (+) DO NOT CONNECT.
      THEN WORK ON THE COLD SIDE (-) (DO NOT CONNECT)
      Connect cold buss and then turn on (+)
      Wear rubber gloves, drink coffee, wear insulated shoes. be mindful. Put on all connectors first with no connections and thas then there is no exposed conductors.
      It’s like working on a linear amp. Kill power, un plug, shorting stick on hv, gloves on shorting bar again…yada yada.

      • Copy that, preaching to the choir. I still need to take down all those panels on the steep ass roof of our house, and I have been banned from all but a little 6 ft step ladder by my Queen. Shhh, she is unaware of the 12-footers in the hoop houses. Remember, I don’t know what their condition is or how they are connected, but I can say that I am confident they were part of one of those scam jobs you see all the time, and I have zero confidence in them being up to code. The old (dead) panel sits quietly in the mudroom with no visible feed wiring into or from anywhere. When we bought the place, the system was listed as inoperative and disabled. The Mennonite crew came by a couple of weeks ago to measure for the new steel roofing and said they could take the panels down then. I saw one of the younger fellows with an aged pair of side cutters, so I inquired what kind of electrical training his crew had. The short answer was none, so only measurements were taken that day. I am still trying to schedule the work with someone more knowledgeable, but everyone is booked months out.
        There used to be an old power company TV commercial with a guy putting up a ladder that gets too close to a power line, then you see a big arc. The narrator says, “Don’t learn electrical safety by accident.”.

        • Even a side cutter can be deadly if you don’t know what you are cutting. My commercial PV system runs series panels and that PV line is 400 volts when the sun is out.

    • Historically, the best readers always seem to be asleep or in some sort of brain-dead woo-woo trance. Still, never heard of one of them hitting a good lotto pick. Maybe if you guys cut back on caffeine and tried working on forecasts late and glassy-eyed, Ure forecast rate would be better. Personally, I think there must be some kind of multiverse woo-woo non-interference prime directive crap in play, otherwise Ure readers would have retired off lotto winnings by now.

    it’s the business model…annual witch hunt is usually from August to late November.. they downsize to adjust income to legitimize the inflated incomes of the pencil jockies..and desk anchors. trillions is spent on insurances that refuse to pay hundreds of billions given for research and development.. so they can charge the regular citizen thousands of percentage more for the same products they sell abroad cheap. closing a clinic or small practice is doing the same thing . they are doing that and cutting kitchen and housekeeping staff right now..the land of infinite short shifts..I wish I had a dollar for every hour I worked as the tag your it guy.. it can be fixed.. but that doesn’t fit the business model of stuff big buck Billie’s pockets .it’s the same reason we have a failing infrastructure and keep our grid vulnerable..To fix it and get the USA’s healthcare and infrastructure fixed would mean legislators would have to actually change their priorities on what is actually important and change the business model.. now on their side changing the business model would mean a whole change to the business model.

    • Lol… let me see who is the biggest whiner on medical debt..hmmm… let me think..oh yeah that would be me I think.. twenty one and tossed under the buds twenty two and a half mil and Satan the collection agent for the damned ..boss that played the precious metals and stock market using money that the employees were paying for healthcare..I still got money on the damned dental bill at forty percent interest..I pay two hundred a month just in interest.. then a damned tooth crumbled the other night.. I can’t afford to get it fixed..the insurance companies that refuse to pay..I told the agent fought two years the insurance was suppose to pay two grand.. I used care credit at forty percent..told the agent just tell them to send me a letter to be framed saying eat shit and die .. they sent two hundred..the insurance for the wife..she had strokes.. for catastrophic insurance the rate was so high that if I had put the same money in savings bonds I would have almost a million..in bonds..its a racket.. can’t see a doctor in a clinic without the insurance they send you to the ER ..at twenty times the cost.. had one of my gents get tossed out of a clinic because he didn’t have the deposit for his future cancer cares..grrr..I could whine piss and moan all day on this one..trillions is spent to insurance companies that won’t pay..my whole life has been shoved into hell..couldn’t buy a roll of toilet paper because Satan in the legal system destroyed me..hundreds of billions given for medicine research just so they can charge the citizens tens of thousand of percent more than anywhere else on the planet…

I worked with..she got cancer they booted her off the I durable then proceeded to take his farm all his belongings his rental house.. leaving him with absolutely nothing..he moved into our spare bedroom with the clothes on his back..one of the guys had discovered he had cancer while living g in our spare room.. covered by the government.. they sent that nice letter requesting a modest deposit on his future cares..he lived in our spare bedroom..the look on his face when they asked him to leave the clinic.. he started to cry when we got into the buggy and he said..what about me and my life..its The business model..if you have money..then you can get right in to see a doctor..if you dont..well its kind of like that song about summer..

    Don’t sit down yet as the band is about to strike up a new song celebrating a (American?) reordering of the Ukraine government’s cabinet. President Zelensky has taken a moment in his social media schedule for an office scrum with his photogenic now-former Minister of Justice and soon-to-be Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States of America.

    Mrs. Ambassador is a graduate of the Odesa National Economics University, and was embraced by the Servant of the People Party after her 2019 election ballot shortfall with the Ukrainian Strategy party. The latter party formed in the city of Vinnytsia. It’s environs retain ruins of Hitler’s “Wehrwolf” eastern front headquarters occupied by the fuehrer himself in 1942 and 1943. A local museum for the same appears to remain on drawing boards.

    Meanwhile Ukraine’s national public broadcaster Suspilne Ukraine notes that SAP (Specialized Anti-Corruption Office) has taken interest in recent allegations made by the “Ukrainian Truth” outlet. Allegedly a 2025 federal expropriation of the Trade Union Building in Kyiv benefited the incoming Ukraine Ambassador to the USA by way of her former spouse. It would seem an alleged courtship of love and money is foundering in the public arena. Such are the days of their lives?

    The recently constructed Trade Union Building replaced an edifice burned down in the 2014 revolution. It’s new clock tower chimes woo passersby with a Kyiven anthem “How Can I Not Love You, Kyiv of Mine”.

  13. Another insurance train wreck in CA is coming. Communities where the HOA pays for all the buildings face insurance increases of up to 800%, if it can be obtained at all. I live in a 55+ community which currently insures all the homes. Fortunately, all the homes here are freestanding.
    Our current HOA policy expires on Jan. 1, and we can’t get a quote for next year until Dec., and our agent is not sure any companies will be willing to write HOA polices in CA in 2026. Because our homes are freestanding, we can get individual homeowners H03 polices at a much cheaper rate than the commercial HOA policies. Our AAA agent, which we currently use for renters (inside the walls) and auto insurance, can’t write a new policy until Nov.
    Homeowners with common wall condos are going to be screwed.
