But there is something going on in the data. We just can’t tell what it is—yet.
Months ago, I turned off the outside tracking software and advertising on UrbanSurvival. Since then, I have been using the site’s traffic as a crude national mood sensor. Not because Urban is large enough to represent America, but because its audience is stable, widely distributed, news-aware and remarkably consistent in its habits.
That makes sudden changes interesting.
What caught my attention was a broad wave of reader behavior appearing in more than one independent statistics package. It wasn’t confined to AWStats. A similar pattern showed up in Webalizer, which means we are probably looking at actual human activity rather than a reporting quirk inside one piece of software.
The wave also appears to have some relationship to the stock market.
“Appears” is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Correlation is not causation, a small data set can manufacture seductive coincidences, and the human brain is an Olympic-class pattern-finding machine. Still, the relationship is persistent enough that some excellent paid AI is now on the case—and has me collecting more data.
Its first useful instruction was straightforward:
> Test leads and lags from minus three through plus three trading days. If Urban’s traffic repeatedly moves before independent measures of national attention, the site may be acting as an early-warning audience sensor. If it moves at the same time, it is measuring collective attention. If it follows, search engines, recommendations and news propagation are probably delivering the audience.
That is the sensible version of the idea.
The strongest working explanation is not that someone is broadcasting a hidden brain-control signal across America – though we don’t rule anything out… It is that the national information system has become an **event-coupled oscillator**.
Newsrooms watch markets. Markets react to newsrooms. Platforms amplify whatever gains velocity. Algorithms feed people more of whatever makes them stop scrolling. People become anxious, curious or angry, then search, click, trade and talk. Those reactions produce new data, which the platforms and newsrooms feed back into the system.
Round and round it goes.
A coupled system like that could easily produce non-random waves of mass behavior without anybody sitting at a giant control console. The machine would not need a mastermind. Feedback would be enough.
Hmm. What would information anarchy look like? Is “random super-coupling” a byproduct of hypercomplexity with digital glue creating synchronized behavior?
Frankly, I might never have noticed this “behavior wave” except for my long-running fascination with the relationship between UrbanSurvival traffic and what the stock market does next. I have watched those two streams for years. Sometimes they move together. Sometimes readership seems to surge before market weakness. At other times, traffic falls quiet shortly before stocks rebound.
The emerging pattern looks approximately like this:
**Attention surge >>>market crest >>> traffic and news arousal decay >>>market decline >>> attention exhaustion >>> market rebound.**
That is considerably more interesting than ordinary referral noise.
It may be a weak national arousal signal carried through the electronic information system—a measure of uncertainty, apprehension and information-seeking that becomes visible before people can explain what they are worried about.
Or it may be statistical junk wearing a tuxedo.
That is why the hypothesis has now been frozen:
> An increase in national information-seeking intensity may precede short-term stock-market weakness, while attention exhaustion may precede rebound days.
No changing the rule afterward to make the graph prettier. We will test the same relationship prospectively for another 60 to 90 trading days. We will also remove the five largest traffic days to see whether a handful of exceptional news events are creating the apparent effect.
If the one-trading-day inverse relationship remains near minus 0.30 or stronger after three months—and survives the removal of those outliers—then we may have found a real collective-attention leading indicator rather than a July coincidence.
Except it already isn’t only a July coincidence. When we push the comparison back into April, a similar problem appears. The timing isn’t clean enough to trade, and no one should bet retirement money on a half-formed web-traffic theory. But the recurring “ringing” is difficult to dismiss.
Which raises the fun question. As more people begin talking about life on Earth as a simulation, is this what the SimLife display looks like when enough of the pixels all start looking in the same direction?
- Does the information flow move people?
- Do markets move the information flow?
- Or does the ebb and flow of money—stock prices, bond yields and made-up Bitcoin pricing—reach further into human behavior than conventional economics admits?
The answer may be all three.
For now, the oscillator appears to be in a lull. If the working model is right, the lull should not last. Some kind of news jolt ought to arrive within the next several days, followed by a larger traffic response—or “ringing effect”—visible by the middle of next week.
That is a prediction, not a prophecy—a statistical inference. We have written down the rule before the event. Now Reality gets to grade the paper.

The main thing that changed overnight is that the Iran war widened from a Hormuz-centered disruption into a two-chokepoint energy threat.
Houthi forces claimed attacks on two Saudi-linked tankers near Bab el-Mandeb; Saudi Arabia confirmed one tanker was struck without casualties, while the second attack remains unverified. The United States completed a twelfth consecutive night of strikes.
Brent rose to about $98.59 and WTI to $90.22, lifting two-year Treasury yields to a 17-month high and increasing market odds of a Federal Reserve rate increase.
West Virginia remains under statewide emergency after destructive flooding, National Guard deployments and more than 85 rescues; some residents remain unaccounted for, but no verified fatality count has been released.
China began two days of live-fire drills near Taiwan.

Energy is becoming the Fed’s controlling variable — 69%.
Rate expectations shifted markedly even before today’s labor numbers. If fuel remains elevated, weaker employment may no longer guarantee easier monetary policy. Eyes on the CME FedWatch tool here. Hike odds topped 37 percent today. What will drive next? Houthi hits, rates, or a black swan?
Refined fuel may outrun crude — 81%.
European diesel margins were already near record levels, while Russian refinery damage and a diesel-export ban are reducing alternative supplies. Consumers may therefore see diesel and transportation costs rise faster than the headline crude price. Bertha shouldn’t impact GOM oil, but its path is through Deepwater Horizon territory… a wall of offshore platforms.
Expect a Taiwan Incident — 65%. China is coupling diplomacy with immediate coercive signaling. The drills followed Rubio-Wang talks by one day. That timing suggests Beijing is maintaining military pressure even while diplomatic channels remain open.
The “Aggregate Flag” Problem
We are still waiting for markets to resolve this Aggregate Index “bull flag breakout.” I say bullish because we still like the “blow-off to Labor Day” scenario, despite how improbable it may seem in here.
With Av 9 ending at sundown tonight, odds of SPF-50 being useful around Pickaxe Mountain, Iran will be rising.
And that will set up the very kind of “news jolt” that could set our [mysterious] statistical behavioral oddity to ringing. Again.
There is other economic news to be aware of: The Chicago Fed National Activity Indicator has just come out:
“The Chicago Fed National Activity Index (CFNAI) increased to –0.02 in June from –0.19 in May. One of the four broad categories of indicators used to construct the index decreased from May, and two categories made negative contributions in June. The index’s three-month moving average, CFNAI-MA3, increased to –0.05 in June from –0.10 in May.”

By the look of the fall, planning to step back a ways from the daily news flow – to write deeperore deep economics and beat-the-system reports on the Peoplenomics site, certainly makes a lot of sense.
For today? Market futures are moderately down and we expect harder and lower tomorrow.

I imagine my role in the world is to provide a kind of loofah for the brain (often spelled luffa). We like “scratching off old ideas” with our particular bend on informational exfoliation. It’s a small niche, too.
All you need to do is observe what the EarthSim presents and then use it to construct how the local universe will work from this moment forward. Anything will do as your idea source. My latest pick is the tracking report for Elaine’s (still MIA) Selectric II purchased on eBay July 6th.
Here’s an interesting thing I have learned about Aging. The closer you get to “going to where it don’t matter” the easier it becomes to look at the local evidence as it rolls through your life, and make up really interesting stories for the EarthSim to consider.
In other words, since the future is not fully-formed yet, we each can have a role in helping to write that part of the Universe’s shooting script for coming days.
Now you take the missing typewriter. My latest (novel) script for this one is pretty good. It involves the former postal boss being bounced and the workers trying to stage a palace coup.
To do this, coup leaders decide that they need to have bigger empires and higher postal rates. Their move?
Well, they decide that operatives will take occasional heavy packages and route them all over the country. See, in labor talks (and posturing) they can argue that our mail volume is up some-such percent and look how many sorting operations we’re doing.
Once postal rates go up, and a more complicit Postmaster comes along, then suddenly, having odd packages go on their “federally supervised truck tours” of the Midwest can end and everyone can spend the additional money (and accrued comp time) the “ride-em-forever” strategy created.
But first – in this novel I’m living – I need the postal rates to go up and for the existing postal management to lock out new and potentially more competent people. Because stability seems to matter a great deal in the Sim.
Feels more honest than “the news” lately, doesn’t it?

A little after five this morning – already 84 degrees [ didn’t cool much over night ] and the smoke is so thick you can’t see across the lake.
Not really sure which fire is supplying all the smoke – but it has happened before. A few years back we were socked in so bad they closed our little airport down. Lasted nearly a week.
The fifty-four mile lake acts as a natural, glacier carved funnel – running north to south., and right into town. Really screws-up Winter forecasts also.
The news and rumors are pointing at a very interesting three, or four days just ahead. A few items are not matching up.
.., and Brent Sea Crude just went over $100 a barrel – West Texas Tea is now over $91.30 a barrel. That is not a threat of inflation – that ‘is’ inflation.
NASDAQ down over 470 – Dow down 544 – S&P down 85
.., and the Japanese economy continues it slide down the bankrupt ramp.., Yen now at a 46 year low and the NIKKEI dropped 954 points – still above the magical 65,000 though – how it is managing to do that is a bit of a mystery.

people in authority often avoid speaking the full truth because of how the public might react? If they came out and said exactly what was happening, you’d see panic buying, bank runs, and markets in freefall overnight.
Before every major depression in history, the real situation was quietly unfolding behind the scenes while the public was told everything was stable. Not because the truth wasn’t known — but because revealing it too soon can collapse the very system they’re trying to protect.
It’s been the same pattern that every civilization fell into before they collapsed…the tail of two cities, the rise and fall of the Roman empire.. when fear becomes more dangerous than facts, the truth gets delayed.
Life becomes a cycle..civilizations repeat once those that were present during past cycles are gone leaving the young to experience the same cycles…

Could this beat Elaine’s wandering Selectric saga. Several years ago, maybe 7 or 8, while we still lived back on El Rancho de Chaos, Diana and I had picked up a large wicker Papa San chair at a patio furniture outlet store near Branson. It is really comfortable and we had many ahem, rendezvous on it over the years. It is out in greenhouse #1 now with a cushion that has seen better days. Yesterday a large package arrived by USPS. It looked like it had been drug through everything and was wrapped with red tape. The address label was barely readable but the newer one had our old address that was partially correct and a forwarded mail label with our current address. I opened the package and to our surprise it was a new(er) cushion for the chair. A solid beige, not a gawd awful floral print like the present faded one.
Neither of us remembers ordering it and I will not spend any time looking that far back to see if I can find the receipt or invoice for it. Diana said she remembers calling them a while after we got it home and asked to see if there were any replacement cushions available but didn’t order anything. We unpacked it and it fits perfectly. I’m going to speculate it got stuck someplace and someone discovered it and put it into the system.
Last night the temps were below bread baking range so we took some iced tea out there and watched the stars come out. She was leaning on my shoulder and I thought now would be a good time but I noticed she was asleep. I guess I dozed off too when she was shaking me to get up. It was almost 11pm.

Me… every day just makes me want to shut down every external connection and get cash in hand and pull out to anchorages a dinghy ride from a store. Waiting now on a cool Aus made water maker that will make our isolation more reasonable since one needs water to make freeze dried stuff viable. No other links. Fuel is not a requirement. A small fishing gear upgrade would be nice.
In short, WTF is the matter with this whole planet? Is insanity a built in feature of us all? Are men and women (if they can even be defined) actually separate species ultimately vying for control? Or are we just like the mantis? In my life it feels as though I had my head bitten off after procreation. ‘She’ gets the steak, you not so much.
I swear, the only real safety I have ever felt is when at absolute risk far at sea. At least there I know exactly what is after me. We all had a choice back around the early 70’s whether to choose the digital life or not. Bad navigation in a black gale ended that version of my choice and then I was slowly and deliberately sucked in to the new world, one glowing screen at a time, to where now this web of sticky fibers is almost impossible to escape without a Herculean effort and determination difficult to rouse while eighty years creeps up now only six days away.
Not going to give up. Somehow there is some sort of lesson here that will be important to my soul in the future.
