Inflation Settles Tariffs? Bankers Prefer Powell, Secrets of Sickness

No, actually, the tariffs-as-taxes debate will go on long after my passing, yours, or the pyramids. Sure, it sounded like “free money.”  But usually, where there’s “free money” there’s also fine print. And the tab comes later.

Take the inflation figures just out:

“The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 0.3 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis in December, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 2.7 percent before seasonal adjustment.

The index for shelter rose 0.4 percent in December and was the largest factor in the all items monthly increase. The food index increased 0.7 percent over the month as did the food at home index and the food away from home index. The index for energy rose 0.3 percent in December.

The index for all items less food and energy rose 0.2 percent in December. Indexes that increased over the month include recreation, airline fares, medical care, apparel, personal care, and education. The indexes for communication, used cars and trucks, and household furnishings and operations were among the major indexes that decreased in December.”

Sometimes, it’s harder to figure out economic notes than lawyer speak.  Economic notes could tie-in the jobs picture, deportation ripples, and monetary inflation. The lawyers would talk about system dynamics that take time to work through the system. Gold, silver  and commodity prices tell you what’s really going on with inflation.

Still, the Courts are looking at discretionary tariff powers while the Ballroom Builder in Chief says ‘We’re screwed’: Trump warns of crisis if SCOTUS rules against tariffs. Not convinced we aren’t anyway.  What’s on the table is timeline, as much as anything, when you zoom out.

D.C. Two-Step

OK, made it through the night, swallowed the inflation pills, what else is doing on before I highjack a pillow?

We see the possibility of H.R. grenades – broadcast shorthand for lots of firings and turnover  – in D.C. amidst a whole slew of semi-linked reports.

Then there’s the future of Pam Bondi as the Wall St. Journal headlines Exclusive | Trump Has Complained About Pam Bondi Repeatedly to Aides – WSJ.

And if that’s not enough, Jack’s back.  Yeah: Trump investigator Jack Smith to testify publicly at House hearing.

Peace Movements: Progress Check

We aren’t putting Tehran back on va-ca plans, yet: Death toll in protest crackdown in Iran spikes to at least 544, activists say | AP News

And we may open a small betting pool on when the next surge in Walz’ uprising Minnesota pops as Tensions flare in Minnesota as protesters and federal agents repeatedly square off.  One of these days, that will go sour – again.

Rather than fix his city HR department which we’d think would be all over such thing, Hizzoner of NYC is lipping off again: DHS detains NYC Council employee at Nassau County immigration appointment.  Hand me the digital microscope, please?

What’s in the coverage:

  • NYC Council employee detained in Nassau County (Bethpage) during a routine immigration court appointment.

  • Menin says he had legal authorization to live/work in the U.S. through October 2026 and that he called Council HR using his one phone call after being detained.

  • DHS disputes that, with a spokesperson saying he lacked work authorization, entered on a 2017 tourist visa, and (per ABC7’s excerpt of DHS) alleging additional claims.

The good news?  Immigration and immigrant rights discussions have been a whole boom sector of the New Economy. There have to be thousands of job openings… sheesh.

Statistics that Matter

Take a look at this from Study Finds: Having More Kids (Or None At All) Linked To Faster Aging In Women. We’re still sorting out what that means.  More than 3-kids comes with an age penalty?

Around the Ranch: In Sickness and in Sickness…

I’m fast approaching the one-week mark on my miserable cold.  I don’t get one of these but every 10-years, or so.

Ure family wisdom suggests some colds will last -days.  Others will last a week.

Check the comments section from the Monday column.  Friend of reader Ray has iet.  Buddy up in Gig Harbor (WA) reports the crud is making its way through the PNW. too.  Apparently, it’s a political disease.

A surprising number of “old sayings” about colds may be found in a study of our culture.  Here’s a list to take at the first sign of sniffles:

  • A cold is the only thing that can make you feel busy doing nothing.

  • A cold turns your head into a mucus-based think tank with no funding.

  • The problem with a cold is it makes you too tired to complain properly.

  • A cold: where you’re not sick enough to quit but too sick to function.

  • When you’ve got a cold, your body becomes a full-time cough factory with part-time thinking.

  • A cold is just your immune system saying, “Let’s do a software update… during business hours.”

  • Colds are proof God has a sense of humor: you can’t breathe through your nose, so you taste nothing, but you still have an appetite.

  • A cold is a tax on optimism.

  • With a cold, you don’t sleep — you take short naps between cough negotiations.

  • A cold is the body’s way of forcing you to stop moving without asking permission.

  • A cold makes you wonder why you ever took breathing for granted.

  • If you want to know what you’re grateful for, get a cold and try to swallow.

  • A cold turns a grown man into a nostril accountant: “Left side open… right side closed… swap at midnight.”

  • Nothing makes a blanket (or a wife) feel more valuable than a cold.

  • A cold is the only time a man can drink soup and call it medical care.

  • Colds are like bad houseguests: they arrive uninvited, eat your energy, and leave you with a mess.

  • A cold is when your nose decides it’s a faucet and your throat decides it’s a sandpaper exhibit.

  • The first day of a cold is denial. The second day is bargaining. The third day is Kleenex economics.

  • A cold is a three-part symphony: sniffle, sneeze, cough — in the key of “Not Today.”

  • A cold makes the simplest task feel like you’re doing it with gloves on and a wet brain.

  • A cold is when your body says “rest,” and your mind says “fine,” and neither one is happy.

  • A cold is a reminder that your throat has moving parts.

  • You don’t beat a cold — you outlast it.

  • A cold is a week-long reminder that you own too many responsibilities for one set of lungs.

  • Colds are proof the human body runs on spare parts and attitude.

  • A cold is the only time you can feel both too hot and too cold without moving an inch.

  • A cold makes coffee taste like regret and water taste like work.

  • The worst part of a cold is how it makes time stretch: every hour is a small winter.

  • A cold is when “I’m fine” becomes a creative lying exercise.

That “Thing” that’s going around…

Doesn’t seem to respond to modern medicine. I’ve thrown everything in the medicine cabinets at it – and a fair portion of what’s in the bar (and even a few things from the “stash”) with little improvement.

  • Vitamins D, E, C, B-complex, zinc, TMG, blueberry extract, NMN-H, querc. berberines, I quit counting when I ran out of fingers and toes.
  • It’s good to save all those “leftovers” from past oral surgeries, too.
  • Asthma meds are doing fine – making it possible to breathe between coughs.
  • Red light therapy hasn’t made a dent. Different herbal this and that’s, either.

Comes down to it, colds may be the only thing keeping daytime TV on the air. Down 7-pounds in a week I may have just enough energy left to write an app and go head to head with those “tai chi weight loss over 50” videos.

If you have a chance, try to remember to stop aging at 75. There’s some really treacherous territory past there.

Write…send drugs…send winning PowerBall numbers,

  2. Poor Boobsywoobsy, its all in Ure head, genius.

Get out Yo head, you be out Ure cold. I know, easier said than done, but like Yogi Berra once quipped – “Baseball is 97% Mental and the rest is in your head.”. Or see and listen uncle Cliffs latest regards the big C all being in Ure head. Prezactly what my YXQA advisor alwayz said.

? at what internal temp does a cold virus Die? how high can you raise your Ure internal temp safely ? hmmmmm

    • sheesh….it’s just a cold! How will you survive the collapse of everything? Immune system will be struggling after living in relative isolation for so long. Need to flex those immune responses to stay strong.

That said, raising internal temperature is good advice. Once had an amazing recovery when struck down the night before a field trip to a remote emerald field. Took to bed and dived under layers of doonas with a hot water bottle – sweated out every last drop through the night and woke completely healthy.
Anecdotal but still……last thing you want to do is treat the symptoms and speed up recovery. Your body wants to sweat it out. Listen to it………….

  4. George if you have not tried this one it is one that works and has worked for us for years, actually we now make our own version of it. We normally don’t get flu’s and or colds as we take a homemade elixir that my wife makes made from black elderberry that grows wild here in NM. When the flu season starts up we take a tablespoon every morning until the flu season is over and we have not had colds or flu in years. as a preventive, IF one of us starts to feel like something is trying to develop we then take this stuff and it works, we have LOTS of friends who also take this stuff and it will knock out the flu or a cold. if you have waited to long and are in the full blown cold or flu it will help shorten and or lessen the symptoms. here is a link if you interested. I know you take lots of stuff, but you should really look at the ingredients in this stuff. you can buy it almost anywhere online, but be aware it gets sold out fast as it works and people whom use it know it. 6. When I first feel anything coming on anymore my first response is SALINE nasal spray up my nose and then regular salt water gargling (immediately and every two hours or so later) … but you can NOT drink anything after the gargling for at least an hour.

Back before they banned it since it caused some people to lose their sense of smell permanently the Zinc Cream that you put up your nose would ALWAYS knock a cold out of me as long as I put it in my nose as soon as I suspected one was coming on or at least during that first day (unfortunately for me they banned that stuff so quickly, as in OFF THE SELF within an hour, that though I was at multiple drug stores within two hours to buy as much as I could it was all GONE)

I HATE gargling with salt water … but for me it seems to work if I do it starting as soon as I expect a cold has chosen me for it’s Winter Vacation Outing.

Hope you get to feeling soon

        JC,

I didn’t see any drones in the preview clip. What will soldiers do when bullets become obsolete, reverse the proverb attributed to #26? “Speak loudly and carry a little stick.”

“Invasion” spoiler alert: Curacao and Aruba are invaded by the fictional nation of Veragua.

The real Duchy of Veragua was established in 1508 in present day Panama for the son of Christopher Columbus. Direct descendent and 18th Duke of Veragua and Admiral of the Ocean Sea is a retired Spanish naval captain residing in Madrid. Apparently in Panamanian slang “veragua” means something confusing, expensive, or remote whereas in Spanish it means mildew (on cloth).

The founder of the “Invasion” movie’s US distributor, Well Go, has publicly noted cv detail reflecting prior employ with a US office of an Italian luxury brand. Its celebrated double f logo is not to be confused with the four-footed Anglo-Saxon gammadion. In recent years the firm has situated its headquarters in Rome’s fabled “Square Colisseum”. Original 1938 construction commencement had purposed the edifice as a centerpiece for the 1942 World’s Fair, and hq of the Italian fascist party. The Italian luxury brand was bought up half a dozen years ago by the French and world’s largest luxury goods brand whose head wrestled the “richest person in the world” title from Elon Musk for two months in 2023.

Film distributor Well Go originally started out as a distributor of Taiwanese karaoke laserdiscs. The American entity chose its name from the singing dog (cn: “hui guo”) on the discs’ logo. Apparently the American distributor pronounced “hui guo” like “Well Go”. (As an aside, the final resting place of beloved Nipper the RCA dog, in Kingston-Upon-Thames UK is now occupied by a Lloyd’s Bank building. The banking firm logo is comprised of a black horse not to be confused with that one appearing in the Book of Revelation.)

Chinese school students are perhaps familiar with the famous 8th century Tang Dynasty Buddhist monk Huiguo who founded Japan’s Shingon Buddhism. He received schooling instruction from a disciple of Buddhist Patriarch Amoghavajra. It seems Amoghavajra’s actions near Chang’an in 765 ad defused a pending battle against a 200,000 man army opposition. He invoked the Humane King Sutra, and the opposing leader died. Following is a link to a “Wikipedia” edit page mention:

  8. Hey George, I don’t know if this would help your cold. I just happened to see an online ad yesterday for a device called “No More Colds”–it’s a 660 nm red-light thingy you put in your nostrils for 10 mins a day. No clue if it’s legit or not, but am thinking about trying it for my perpetual allergy/sinus issues. On Amazon it has like 65% 5-star & 19% 1-star reviews. Hope you feel better soon!

    • I have one…love it.. with all the sinus issues I have had .. I got one and for a short time it helps

  9. Since Trump can command drug prices why not 2x4s?

Recall the olden days when Republican leadership – like McConnell *cough* – blathered on about drug companies being about charge whatever they want becasue they did the research, blah, blah, blah. Now they’re commies.

Bigg’s prediction (ty to poster here who shared Biggs’ prediction last year)
    https://www.ndtv.com/offbeat/pastor-who-predicted-trumps-assassination-bid-now-warns-of-a-doomsday-event-7454204
Mr Biggs claimed that the earthquake would hit the New Madrid fault line, stretching through Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky and Illinois.

‘It was so big, there were 1,800 people who died [along that stretch]. All the houses on cinder blocks were completely shaken to the foundation, they just fell,” said Mr Biggs.

Doubly scary to me, as many years ago I had a dream about talking to my sister on phone about the quake in her region (Southern Illinois).

  11. Since many are chiming in with remedies, besides your current nutrients, I suggest nebulized hydrogen peroxide, diluted in sterile saline. I used that this week for a mild Cold. I add 3 mL of 3% hydrogen peroxide (store bought USP grade) to 5 mL of 0.9% sterile saline from sealed ampules. Ends up being 1.8% strength by my math. Benchtop Nebulizer, not portable.

The worse the infection & mucus, the more you can tolerate irritation wise. Dr. Brownstein and Mercola recommend much weaker solutions than Dr. Levy which wrote “Rapid Virus Recovery” during the COVID madness.

    What to invest in?
I bought some lead this weekend. Not a lot. Just enough to get fresh, sealed primers in the front line go-to hardware, plus a spare mag.
When I had access to a range where I could do movements, I spent a third of my time shooting behind as I practiced hauling ass away from danger, a third going forward, and a third moving lateral, or slicing the pie. Movement is good. Getting caught flat footed with old primers is not good.

  14. (“Statistics that Matter
Take a look at this from Study Finds: Having More Kids (Or None At All) Linked To Faster Aging In Women. We’re still sorting out what that means. More than 3-kids comes with an age penalty?”)

Now that’s an Interesting study — but honestly, the biology is only half the story. The bigger issue is the economic penalty that comes with having kids today. A lot of young people aren’t avoiding children because they don’t want families; they’re avoiding them because the math doesn’t work. In many places, daycare alone wipes out an entire paycheck. I know people working full?time who clear maybe a couple dollars a week after childcare and transportation. They stay in the job just for the health insurance.

When raising a child costs more than rent, more than college, and more than most wages can support, it’s no surprise people feel stuck or discouraged. We talk about birth rates like it’s a mystery, but it’s not. Families aren’t failing — the system is..it’s been failing the bottom tier of the pyramid for decades. It’s just not visible from the upper layers. I spent ten days in a gated neighborhood recently, and it struck me how completely different the world looks from there. The daily realities I see — the financial strain, the impossible childcare costs, the trade?offs people make just to survive — simply didn’t exist in that environment. Not because anyone was ignoring them, but because the system is built so those pressures never reach the people at the level they live in. We’re living in the same country, but not the same reality…the view in Martha’s vineyard isn’t the same as the hood..even at my level on this pyramid..I haven’t a clue what its like in those levels beneath my reality..I listen to the stories of what the two little girls experienced in the ghetto of Seattle and whence.. the same age as my two grandkids and their maturity level exceeds them by years because of what they experienced…

  15. Started to reread the Mencius to night..what an enlightening teachings..
I just !I’ve the great teachers..yup even Mohammad.. why so many take what they taught out of context amazes me..

    • What strikes me when reading Mencius is how much the late Zhou dynasty resembles parts of our own society today.

You see a powerful nation starting to lose coherence, widening gaps between everyday people and the insulated upper tiers, and leaders who hold titles but seem disconnected from the realities on the ground.

Mencius kept warning that when the people’s hardships become invisible to those above, the whole structure becomes unstable.

It’s interesting how a text written over two thousand years ago can feel so familiar. Different time, different culture — but the exact same human patterns…

**“When you read Mencius, you see more than just social decay in the late Zhou dynasty — you see rulers trying to hold onto power through constant military expansion. Instead of strengthening the kingdom, these campaigns drained resources, destabilized the people, and actually weakened the state they were trying to protect. Mencius warned that when leaders lose the trust of the people, they turn to force, and that’s the moment a kingdom begins to devalue itself from the inside.

I find it interesting that er are not able to notice the parallels today from those actions of past dynasties of several thousand years ago.
A once powerful nation that was stretched thin, leaders were insulated from the everyday realities of daily life, and used military actions used to project an image of strength while the foundation of the people at home grew more fragile. A different era, a different culture — but the exact same pattern of a state trying to maintain control in ways that slowly undermined its own fragile stability.

One thing I see is the parallel that Mencius makes clear about the late Zhou dynasty is that the decline wasn’t just political — it was a moral and structural one.

As the kings grew more arrogant and wrapped in theirb opulence, they stopped seeing the people who actually supported the kingdom and the kings .

While the royal courts expanded their luxuries, the basic needs of the population were Being ignored. Their Infrastructure crumbled and the very things they once were proud of crumbled and eroded beyond being repair, the burdens on the people increased.

The rulers tried to compensate for their loss of legitimacy with more military campaigns. Instead of strengthening the state they lived in.

Instead the effects of their actions drained the vary resources they once heralded as their strength and hollowed it out from within the very country they claimed to be proud of.

It’s hard not to see echoes of those dynasties today.

When our leaders live so far above the realities of ordinary citizens, when public needs and infrastructure are neglected while power is projected outward, a nation begins to weaken at its core. A different era, a different culture — but the exact same pattern of a society eroding from the top down when those in charge stop seeing the people who hold everything together.

I’ve been told more than once that studying the teachings of the past is a total waste of time — that students today should focus only on the present events.

But the irony i see is that the great teachers of history already explained the very problems we’re living through today…
Plato, Confucius, the Daoist sages, Jesus, Muhammad — they weren’t writing and teaching for their own comfort.

They were trying to warn future generations about the patterns that destroy societies and the virtues that allow people to live in peace and thrive. consider the allegory of the cave.. we the people are only shown reflections of what is going on behind the scenes….

Ignoring them doesn’t make us modern. It just makes us repeat the same mistakes they tried to help us avoid…..

I personally believe everyone should read the words of the greats every year..that all our politicians academic scholars and leaders should actively rep study these and then make a graph showing the activities of yesterday against the actions we are taking of today..

but then who am I just some old moron of the wastelands that barely passed high school…

  16. George as soon as I feel the cold virus going into my lungs I get out the Nebulizer, get the Albuterol Sulfate, and the jar of concentrated collodial silver. I set all these in front of the TV. Just before the 17:30 national news channels come on I mix up a 50/50 mix of Albuterol and silver and place into the Nebulizer. Then I watch all 3 National News recordings while I inhale through the Nebulizer. Usually two treatments about 4 hours apart will kill the virus in the lungs. Have a cough can ready because the mucus and dead virus you cough up are gross.
