Minimal conditions were hit at the close after the Fed party Wednesday.  Could go either way from here, so I closed the long position near the highs and now waiting for the next “cheeseburger-buying moment” in the lunch money play account.

Manufacturing Matters – without it, all the other “matters” causes (racial, gender, woke, Dada, Dada) don’t matter because they won’t be tolerated in whatever country comes next.  Manufacturing funds occupancy  – got it?

Current Account Pit

The U.S. current-account deficit narrowed by $6.3 billion, or 2.0 percent, to $303.9 billion in the fourth quarter of 2024, according to statistics released today by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. The revised third-quarter deficit was $310.3 billion. The fourth-quarter deficit was 4.1 percent of current-dollar gross domestic product, down from 4.2 percent in the third quarter.

Bet results like this make everyone want to rush to work to be sub-average another day, huh?

If the (lies and BS) in the national media was right – about all these Musk-driven job losses, how come no increase in unemployment filings?

Read the NSA (not seasonally adjusted!).  Then notice that employment is up in Virginia!!!

Doesn’t make sense unless there’s a con job in media.  (And what did we just say about manufacting and Wisconsin?

Current Indicators Remain Positive but Decline
The diffusion index for current general activity declined from 18.1 to 12.5 in March, its second consecutive decrease (see Chart 1). Almost 31 percent of the firms reported increases in general activity this month (down from 41 percent last month), while 18 percent reported decreases (down from 23 percent); 47 percent reported no change (up from 35 percent). The indexes for new orders and shipments fell more sharply: The new orders index fell 13 points to 8.7, and the shipments index dropped 24 points to 2.0.

In our first example, Iran wants nukes  to assure their future. Iran on Trump’s letter: A mix of threats and opportunities. Problem is? Manufacturing nukes doesn’t go well with Israel (which has Dimona, after all).  So we expect, along about Easter, a Janet Reno does Waco kind of moment.

Know who else doesn’t having manufacturing to speak of?  Trump Says Houthis Will be “Annihilated” in Warning to Iran.

Similarly, as Russia solidifies positions, Ukraine is quickly moving into the “No manufacturing (or farming) and you won’t have a country mode: Attacks Continue Despite Agreement on Partial Russia-Ukraine Ceasefire. Cease-fire?  Is that what dumbsheatized media is peddling?  Back to the lab…where things make sense.

Science is great fun – always a way to “think forward.”  Not so much in economics. People say they want efficiency and when push comes to shove, they want more than the next guy and that’s about it.

The world has a huge gulf between what is spoken and what is acted.  People on the inside are sleazier than most pretend on the outside.

For now, back to work, still wondering “How can a person be president and not drink?”  Seriously.  Trump’s got a Pied Piper problem: Too many rats in the country. Not enough thinkers, workers, doers. Whiners must outnumber grinders by what? 20-1?

    • Oddly, on the stuff I do there’s no $$$ issues. My problem is time (bad pun, sorry). I have been up since 3 am today working on designs fopr devices to (potentially) cure ptsd and alz, for example. By the time I get through theory and several design spins, schematics, plugged into schemdraw in phython and order parts on amazon it’s way past time to write a column… I’m also trying to prioritize based on odds of success. So like a full-on domain-wall tunneling device is a much bigger problem than a pulsed-light holonomic medicine memory improvement generator. Thanks for the thought, though…

  5. Yesterday slid into darkness with a sunset double rainbow over the twenty or so homes along the shore. Parents were out swimming with their kids in the golden light, there was laughter while this glorious reminder of our blessings hung solid for at least twenty minutes. There was even a nice breeze to carry the bugs away and we sat on deck silently being thankful for having been able to accomplish what was necessary to get us here. A lifetime of hard work, some lucky breaks (not dying in a shipwreck), a career of fun, mostly sailing all over the world on windsurfers, then the final push to build a dream and sail it 4000 miles.
    The dengue hit my wife hard and she is still not recovered enough to spend much time walking around on shore, definitely not seaworthy, so we will be hung on this fine mooring until she is. Now we have to do some of that reverse aging stuff.
    This morning it is total calm, mirror on the bay. Today we are going to a friend’s burn pile and eliminating seven years of paper, and taking a hundred pounds off the boat. We are doing research on getting a small diesel and removing the electric motor. Stupid idea. Biggest error of the design.
    This afternoon it will be raining again, perfect for doing some scrubbing of the rain catch surface. Get that and the burn done and we have a day. Might even go to the only restaurant on the island if we get someone with a car to go along.
    Other than that, pretty slow down here. No burning Teslas (because no Teslas!), no stupid violent death (just old people passing on), and a good run of tuna lately to make vanilla sauce fish.
    Today the choice is ‘be happy’ because the alternative makes no sense.

Times like that come here, but not the nice parts, occasionally laughter from neighbors but not the wind and the gentle motioon of the sole on the soul.

    Last week “Deutsche Welle” informed of political theatrics in Berlin. The incoming Chancellor-elect finangled a next legislative term €500 million in new debt issuance with current term Green Party support. (This will not be counted within the constitutionally-mandated “debt brake”.) €100 million will be for green projects, and €400 million goes towards increased weapons spending.

    Currently the “DW” feed trough is delivering updates on the Franco-Anglo ‘Coalition of the Willing’ project with special guest President Zelensky from Kyiv via video. Apparently the EU could not find support for a €40 million weapons package for Ukraine. However a €5 million artillery shell deal has bidders.

    Today’s EU representative is polyglot Mrs. Kaja Kallas, VP of the European Commission and former PM of Estonia. According to “Wikipedia”, Mrs. Kallas is a student of history and a disciple of on-sabbatical Yale academic Dr. Timothy Snyder [lately of fundraising-for-Ukraine ventures in Poland]. (Dr. Snyder’s teaching term next year at the University of Toronto will be funded via the foundation of a Canadian/Ukrainian billionaire.)

    A Mrs. Kallas-goes-to-Washington journey to see the US Secretary of State on February 28th was for nought. Her appointment allegedly was cancelled by a certain ‘Mr. Rubio’ who perhaps took exception on the day to perceived anti-Trump remarks by a VP of the EC.

    Separately, state-owned “ERR, Eesti Rahvusringhääling” (Estonian Public Broadcasting) offers an overview from 2023 concerning matters of Estonian public and private Russian-business overlaps allegedly linked to the husband of Mrs. Kallas.       Folks,
      I mistakenly thought from the “DW” report above that President Zelensky had returned to Kyiv. My bad.

      Norwegian newspaper daily “Verdens Gang” (The World Goes On), colloquially known as “VG”, offered update from Oslo. The 180 year old media outlet is operated by a great-grandson of the founder via a trust. Published images captured the President of Ukraine and the First Lady being transported via a 14 vehicle motorcade from airport arrival into Oslo proper along a dual-carriage highway secured from other traffic.

      The pair stopped off to see the Norwegian Crown Prince. Welcoming formalities by the PM at the Stortinet (Parliament) Building were gate-crashed by the Secretary General of NATO.

      The parliament building complex is situated on Karl Johans Gate. The street is named in honour of King Charles III John of Norway who also reigned as King Charles XIV John of Sweden. Interestingly, he was born a commoner in Pau, France, a popular 19th century r&r town for the upper crust. The French Revolution saw him rise to be a General to Emperor Napoleon of France. As chance would have it, the General married Napoleon’s ex-fiance, and thus became a brother-in-law to the Emperor’s older brother, Joseph, future King of Spain (who went to live in New Jersey USA after being deposed). As further chance would have it, the Emperor arranged his newlywed General’s adoption by the heirless King of Sweden and Norway (to avoid a Prussian takeover?). At any rate, the pair must have ‘lived happily ever after’. Today their direct descendant Crown Prince in Oslo even got to meet the President of Ukraine!

      • Charles actually rose to become Napoleon’s Field Marshal — Then switched sides and assisted the British in their defeat of Napoleon. Norway was a military ally of France, Sweden, of England. “Karl” (Jean Bernadotte) was not a commoner, but his blue blood was very thin. However, he brought the House of Bernadotte under the Swedish marquee, where it became part of the current Royal Swedish Coat of Arms. Because Norway backed a loser, they found themselves the political stepchild of Sweden for nearly a hundred years. I believe that is why they have kept themselves “neutral” in all issues military, since they regained their independence.

      Folks,

      Railway timetables presently advise that the quickest service from Holovna (Main), Odesa to St. Pancras, London is 38 hours and 20 minutes. Holovna opened in 1883 designed by an ethnic German Russian, Victor Schröter. He had earlier designed an Almshouse for the Philistine Society on a main thoroughfare of St. Petersburg.

      The first version of St. Pancras Station, London opened in 1868 with the latest update being in 2007 for Eurostar service startup. Interestingly it’s state-owned but contracted out to a London-based ppp trust until 2040. The trust is managed by a London-headquartered investment company. It in turn is owned by Toronto-headquartered insurance colossus Sunlife Financial. Getting back to St. Pancras, the station is readily identifiable by its adjacent Grade 1 listed gothic structure formerly known as the Midland Grand Hotel designed by Sir George Scott. However down and out indigent 19th century citizens would be more familiar with the 40 or so workhouses that he designed. As an aside, if anybody requests DJ George to play the official “Wannabe” video, The Spice Girls will tour you around what was formerly known as the Grand Midland Hotel.
